Opening her eyes, Raven found herself in Astarion’s embrace. In the dim light of what looked like the first rays of morning sun, she could hear his breathing, right next to her, his chest rising and falling against her back, a breathing so calm and steady that she tried to stay still so he would not wake up. It had been a long time since she’d had such restful sleep. No dreams or nightmares, nothing, and Astarion was responsible for it. A shy smile peeked on her lips as she watched his hand, resting on her waist. Is this a dream? If it was, she didn’t want to wake up. She felt so good around him. Astarion’s presence always made her feel safe. Always. It was such a strange sensation that she’d always tried to ignore it. In her opinion, it was only her mind playing tricks with her, fooling her, and so she’d pushed it aside every single time. Not anymore. Raven was now sure he was the only person able to make her feel that way.

Astarion didn’t know how long it had been since the arrival of the Mooncrests. Sitting on his couch beside Thalion, they waited for news as Leoric tended to Raven’s wounds. It was difficult to honor Leoric’s request to be alone with Raven so he could concentrate all his attention on her, to make his healing spells more efficient. Astarion struggled at first, not wanting to leave her alone with anyone else, but Leoric was a friend after all, and all he wanted was to help. So here they were, waiting in silence—Astarion’s impatience was palpable in the way he kept shaking his right leg, and Thalion’s worry could be sensed by the way his body language was reacting to Astarion’s mood, but even so, Thalion hadn’t spoken, not once. Since their arrival he hadn’t asked anything, waiting for Astarion to tell him what he was willing to share, and for that he was grateful. He wanted to explain to them what had happened, but he needed to hear news about Raven’s condition first. For what felt like several very long and excruciating hours, silence was all that filled his living room, and even his mind was empty of thoughts, a reflection of his tiredness after everything that happened in the last few days.

Little snippet:

In front of the mirror, Baelen craned his neck to better see the cut Raven had left on him the night before, the wound that had spent all night throbbing, reminding him minute after minute of everything that happened. Tracing the wound with his fingers he grunted in pain, clenching his teeth, ashamed he’d let her mark him like this. How would he explain this without staining his reputation? One more reason to punish her when he got his hands on her again. How could this have happened? It was so fresh in his memory that he could still feel the cold touch of the blade on his skin, the paralyzing fear that had taken over him when he’d realised he was mortal after all, and that he could lose everything in a simple blink of an eye. Fear. Never in his life had he feared anything. He was a powerful man and his power had always granted him immunity. Immunity to everything. But not from death, he had learned it the hard way.

Ready to leave the house with his growing rage boiling inside him, Astarion stopped in his entrance hall when he heard someone knocking at his door. For more than a year he’d lived here, in this new city, enjoying the quietness of his new home, but lately that quietness seemed to have evaporated. He’d received more visits in the last few days than in the last century of his life, and even on a stormy day like this there was someone outside who wanted to see him. Who could it be now? Eugene again? No, he’d just left him at his home, and it was impossible for him to return so quickly. So, who? It really didn’t matter. He wouldn’t welcome anyone else. A more pressing matter was taking all his focus and dedication and he wouldn’t give a fuck for anyone else’s problems. Today he would fulfill a promise—a promise he’d made to himself, a promise he'd made to Raven. Another timid knock sounded, and at the same time he heard a muffled whimper outside, awakening his curiosity.

“Because I love you, Raven… I love you so much. Please… stay with me.” Raven could still hear Astarion’s words in her mind. Since she’d left his side, those words had haunted her like howling wolves in the middle of a dark night. As much as she tried to forget it she couldn’t, his voice kept repeating them over and over inside her head all the way until she reached her final destination. The only time she had heard it before was from Baelen’s mouth—a lie, just like that one. No one had ever said it to her with meaning, and she believed she would never hear it while she lived. Before Baelen she’d had some lovers. Maybe lovers was not the right word, more like special friends, as she’d liked to call them, but all of them were only that, a quick passion or a one night stand after a few too many beers, back when she used to celebrate a successful robbery. Nevertheless, not a single one of them had said those words to her, not even in their drunken state when they’d shared those celebratory beers with her. After that there was Baelen, and he’d managed to fool her, saying those same special words to her—“I love you, my pretty doll”, he’d said in his sickly honey voice when she’d given in to his charms and ended up in his bed.

The snow wasn’t showing any signs of stopping. On the contrary, it kept falling and falling with increasing intensity by the minute, slowing Astarion’s steps even further. Everyone who was still on the streets were rushing to their houses, running from the bad weather, but Astarion was in no rush at all. Instead, he walked aimlessly for a while, with no destination in mind, fighting the snow and the blasting wind without fighting it at all. People warned him, as he passed by them, warned him to get shelter because the weather was going to get worse, but he didn’t listen to them, not really, and so he kept going, walking forward no matter where. His ears were buzzing with the screams of the gusts of wind that were stronger than just a few moments earlier, his feet were getting colder with each step he took, the tip of his nose was hurting and his fingers were fisted so tightly inside his pockets that he wasn’t sure he would be able to move them anytime soon. On any other day that would have been enough to set him swearing at the gods for such horrible weather, but not today. Today nothing seemed to bother him.

It was the first time since she’d started to see Astarion that she’d braided her hair so tightly. Every day she’d gone to meet him, she’d braided it more and more loosely, and in their most recent dates together she’d even permitted some rebel strands of hair to fall beside her face next to her bangs. For a brief period of time Astarion had made her forget why she hated it so much. However, today was different. Today she hated everything about herself again, and like so, she had braided her hair as tightly as she could. Feeling her scalp throbbing with the weight of her braid every time she moved her head, Raven let her mind drift to the prophetic letter that had haunted her days until the day before. “A man of his status won’t be looking for a pathetic woman like you, a woman who can offer him nothing. Did you think that he would take you as his wife? An unintelligent, despicable woman like you? No, Raven, he won’t.” Since the moment she’d read it she’d wondered when the time would come for her to finally admit Baelen was right, and that time had come. She couldn’t ignore it anymore. It was inevitable.

It had been a few days since their first kiss, and two days after it, Raven had already sent him a message, asking to see him again—which he only answered three days later. Why had he taken three fucking days to answer it? What’s wrong with me? In reality he wanted nothing more than to be with her again, but his mind was filled with questions—never-ending questions, growing fears, and doubts. That night had been magical, the kiss they shared had been everything he’d hoped it would be, and he was so maddeningly in love with her… He could feel the ache in his chest every time she entered his thoughts, which these days was almost every moment. More than once he had found himself fantasising about her, about a life with her. His mind wandered to all those simple, blissful moments that a life with her could offer him. Could offer them.

They walked for a while, and Raven led him outside of the city gates, past the docks, to a secluded beach. There was no one there except them. A profound silence, only interrupted by the sound of the waves crashing into the sand. Even the wind was quiet, and the sky was clear with no clouds to spoil the stunning, starry sky. It’s a perfect quiet place… Maybe I can tell her now. Spreading her cloak on the sand she invited him to lie on it. Initially he was hesitant, but she insisted and eventually he gave in and laid down, completely absorbed by the stars above him. He didn’t remember when he’d last taken the time to just contemplate the night sky.

All day she had an ache in her chest, always looking at the window, wondering if a certain elf would still be outside. Unable to resist the temptation anymore, she walked to the window again and peeked outside. It was night already, and he was there still, to her surprise, making her naive heart skip with a stupid joy. “Stop it! He will be tired of waiting and he will leave, never to return!” she muttered, to silence her stubborn rushed pulse, that sounded louder and louder inside her ears. This time she stayed for a while longer, meeting his stare, until he broke it, lowering his head and leaving, just as she’d predicted he would. Once again, she was devastated, and she was angrier than before. What did I expect? With a sudden movement the curtain was closed and she was on her bed again, crying.

In the corner of his living room, Astarion sat on the floor, embracing his knees with his head placed between his legs. For two days he had been locked in his house, completely shrouded by darkness, his thoughts equally dark. When he’d arrived from that catastrophic party at the Mooncrest’s he’d closed the curtains on every window in his house, eliminating any possibility of seeing the sun. His anger was consuming him, his frustration was tearing him apart, and all he wanted was to mingle with the darkness and disappear from this world. In his furious rage he ripped his shirt, his elegant and luxurious shirt, leaving only a scrap of fabric covering his arms, his chest completely bare. His shoes he’d thrown across the room, one finding its place above the couch and the other hitting the water lilies painting above the fireplace, knocking it to the ground, the frame broken. Then, he chose the most concealed corner of the room, pressed his back against the wall and let his body slide down until it reached the floor.
