Something has gone profoundly wrong in American foreign policy — and the receipts are piling up.
Let's go country by country.
🇨🇦 CANADA — "One of the nastiest countries to deal with"
Trump has threatened Canada with tariffs over 200 times. Called PM Trudeau "Governor Trudeau" — a deliberate demotion. Said Canada would "cease to exist" without America. Threatened annexation 69 times. Called Canada the prospective "51st state."
His own ally. His own neighbour. The longest undefended border in the world.
"I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that, too, by the way."
That's Trump. On NATO. The alliance that has kept the West safe for 75 years. He said this while actively considering withdrawing the United States from it entirely.
European leaders weren't even consulted before the Iran war started.
🇮🇹 ITALY / MELONI — From "Trump Whisperer" to "Unacceptable"
This one is almost Shakespearean.
Meloni was the ONLY European leader at Trump's second inauguration. He called her "one of the real leaders of the world." She was dubbed Europe's "Trump whisperer."
Then Trump attacked the Pope.
Meloni — Italian, Catholic, conservative — said it was "unacceptable."
Trump's response in an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera:
"I thought she was brave. I was wrong."
"She is the one who is unacceptable."
"I'm shocked by her."
The woman he once called Europe's greatest leader became, in his words, a disappointment — because she defended the Pope.
The irony? It boosted her approval ratings at home. Italians rallied behind her. Her critics, who always called her "subservient to Trump," suddenly had nothing to say.
🇿🇦 SOUTH AFRICA — The Oval Office ambush
Trump literally dimmed the lights in the Oval Office to play a video for South Africa's president Ramaphosa — a video he claimed showed burial sites of murdered white farmers.
It was actually symbolic crosses from a 2020 protest.
He called it genocide. Cut all US aid. Threatened to throw South Africa out of the G20. Imposed 30% tariffs.
South African experts, historians, and even white Afrikaner officials said there was no evidence of systematic targeting. Ramaphosa's own delegation included white South Africans — including the country's richest man — who disputed the claim to Trump's face.
🇷🇺 RUSSIA / PUTIN — "Very smart." "Excellent call." "I understand his position."
While Russia was bombing Ukrainian cities, Trump described his calls with Putin as "excellent" and "very positive."
He said "Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed" — a claim that left analysts speechless given Putin has repeatedly denied Ukraine's right to exist as a nation.
He defended Putin's refusal to ceasefire before a full settlement: "He doesn't want to be in that position. I understand that position."
He said he'd "love" Putin at the G20 at his own golf course.
🇨🇳 CHINA / XI JINPING — The Beijing state visit, May 2026
Trump flew to Beijing. Stood in the Great Hall of the People. And said:
"President Xi and I have had the longest and greatest relationship the presidents of the two countries have ever had."
"You are a great leader. My friend."
"If you went to Hollywood and looked for a leader of China to play a role in a movie… you couldn't find a guy like him."
He admired Xi's roses in the garden of the Chinese leadership compound — a place almost no foreign leader ever visits — and said they were "the most beautiful roses anyone's ever seen."
Xi offered to send seeds for the White House Rose Garden.
🇮🇳 INDIA vs 🇵🇰 PAKISTAN — The 31-point tariff gap
India: 50% tariffs.
Pakistan: 19% tariffs.
India is the world's largest democracy and America's supposed "strategic partner."
Pakistan once harboured Osama bin Laden.
Pakistan nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize after he claimed credit for brokering the India-Pakistan ceasefire in May 2025. India refused to acknowledge any US role — denying Trump the recognition he craved.
India bought Russian oil. Trump punished them for it.
Pakistan flattered Trump. Trump rewarded them for it.
The pattern is that simple.
Trump's warmth tracks almost perfectly with one thing: whether a country flatters him, credits him, and gives him something transactional in return.
Countries that maintain principled independence — India on Russian oil, France on Iran, NATO on Greenland, Meloni on the Pope — face tariffs, public insults, or diplomatic exile.
As Singapore's former Defence Minister put it:
"Washington's image has shifted from liberator to great disruptor to a landlord seeking rent."
