“Sebastian?” You try calling to your friend one more time before the butler disappears, but to no avail.
That sneaky historian could disappear faster—well faster than a vampire!
He claimed Le Comte was willing to do a role-play with you. You’d drawn one of the slips of paper and he promptly left to inform Le Comte of your choice so he could “prepare?”
Sebastian returned a few minutes later to fetch you to your host’s private study.
“No, my dearest, like this.” Comte catches your hand and turns it gently into the proper position.
“Thank you, maestro. I would be remiss without you.” You don’t quite keep the disappointment out of your voice.
After over and hour of meticulous instructions it feels as though Le Comte’s lessons still have no end in sight. Had Sebastian somehow included “Grueling” with the title etiquette-tutor when he explained this scenario to Comte? Or perhaps you were failing ridiculously? So much that Le Comte had not choice but to stretch out his lesson in and effort to actually make you presentable among the French Aristocracy?
“Is something wrong, ma cherie?” Le Comte asked noting your expression.
“Oh? Oh nothing, monsieur. I was simply considering your instructions.”
While you had learned a great deal from your alleged instructor you couldn’t help wishing you had instead spent the afternoon with your lover.
The social nuances of nineteenth century France were still a bit foreign to you. Yet you had managed well enough the few times Comte had chosen to take you to social gatherings. Or so you had thought.
At this point you weren’t certain whether your manners were suitable for a barn not to mention the aristocracy. Everything Le Comte did was so perfect and while he was gentle with his direction you were
feeling more and more inadequate.
“You have not learned your lesson… have you ?” The reproach in his tone caught you off guard and you looked up into those otherworldly golden eyes.
When you do not reply he continues. “When you keep something from me, I always know.”
Comte’s gloved hand caught your wrist drawing it up to his mouth placed a tender—surprisingly sensual—kiss there. When his eyes once again met yours they demanded a response and you scrambled to give one.
“You have done a wonderful job as my instructor Comte. Thank you for enlightening me on so many things I can do better to fit in here.” You decide evasion of the topic is your best chance to avoid making this awkward.
It wasn’t his fault he took the cosplay so literally. Nor was it his fault you were so terrible at following his instructions.
“But…?” Comte asked releasing your hand but not your gaze.
“Nothing. Just… thank you for teaching me so much. Anyway, I should go. I’m sure Sebastian will need my help with dinner—”
You withdraw from him and head for the door to his office only to find yourself unable to open it.
The sudden warmth at your back makes your heart pound. And as you glance up you see Comte’s hand place firmly against the door holding it closed.
You hadn’t even heard him move yet there he was. Startlingly beautiful and so close it was difficult to breath. The golden sleeve of his coat was near enough to your cheek to discern every woven thread of the meticulously cared for attire.
“Maestro?” You ask.
“Your lessons are not yet complete _. There is also the matter of your choice to be untruthful.”
You sigh turning to look up into those golden eyes you adore. The face you long to see filled with joy instead has a darkness—a loneliness even—that makes your heart sink.
“Comte, I simply—”
“The truth is what I asked for.” He interrupted.
In his long life, Comte had understandably collected his own assortment of sad and dark moments.
Memories that caused him pain and loneliness… for he had said goodbye to far too much. Given up far too much.
Even his time with you seemed so fragile and brief that he had found it difficult to allow himself to express his love for you. You had tried to give him moments of peace during your times together. Times that would ease the lonely look you still saw in his eyes every now and then. While he rarely showed that side of himself to you… somehow you felt this moment was especially important to him. This was something he needed from you.
“Yes, Comte. Just now I was wishing… well… I wanted to be with you today. I was thinking I wished you were acting as my lover this afternoon. Not my instructor. That I would miss even a moment with
you—acting as yourself—made me feel sad. I didn’t mean to be untruthful about it… I just didn’t want you to feel I was disappointed in your efforts. Because I’m not. There is just something I want much
more than your instruction on etiquette.”
You reach up to gently touch his cheek. The warmth of his
smooth skin was so inviting. How long had it been since the two of you had been alone like this? Comte rarely trusted himself to be this close to you for long.
“That was what I was thinking. That I wanted your company. Just you…”
Comte gave you a pained smile. “Perhaps I was overzealous in my duties then. You would have me as your instructor… yet I left out the crucial element of including myself. Forgive my oversight, ma cherie?”
“Of course. Does this mean I get to… we can be closer?” You blush while attempting to put your feelings into words. You knew at times being close to you was difficult for him. Often he would apologize
profusely and ask that you give him leave to be alone. He admitted his feelings made your blood so appealing at times he—the ever self-contained host—nearly lost himself to wanting you.
“You wanted me..?" His voice wavered. Those golden eyes held a hesitance that caused a twist of pain in your chest. Didn't he realize how you felt? How you longed to be in his arms? To hear his voice whisper into your ear all the things he wanted to do to you.
"Always, Comte." You meet his gaze full on. Daring him to believe you. Daring him to see the truth of exactly how much you loved him.
"Then turn around."
"What? Why?"
"Don't you trust your lover?" He asked teasingly.
"I do… I'm just reluctant to turn away. You are far more appealing to look at then the door."
"Trust me, little one, there will be plenty of time to look at me in a moment."
He captured your wrist and turned you in his arms the way a man would twirl his partner on the dance floor. His free hand caught you at your waist, pressing pleasantly against your abdomen and drawing
you flush against him.
"Keep your hands here." He commanded placing them on the wall so that your arms were above your head. "If you move them there will be consequences."
His warning brought a smile to your lips but that smile faltered as the gold of his tie shaded your vision.
"Comte?" You ask.
"Losing one sense heightens the others, does it not?"
"In theory…" you admit hesitantly.
"Let us test this theory then. Shall we?"
With that he began to unzip the back of your dress exposing your skin to his touch. He must have already unbuttoned his shirt because you felt the warmth of his stomach press against your back as he
shifted closer to you.
"What do you think? Does losing your sight allow you to hear more?" He whispered into your ear before sliding a hand up your thigh. "Feel more? And possibly taste more?"
He nipped at the base of your neck causing a pleasant shiver to run across your exposed skin.
"Oh Comte…" you sigh his name in pleasure as those powerful hands grip your thighs pressing you flush against him. You feel the pounding of his heart at your back as his chest rises and falls with each breathe.
"Tell me what you feel. What you want from me_______." He commanded caressing your thigh with small sensuous circles.
"I want your hands to warm me. Your body to mold to mine. I want your touch to set me on fire Comte."
"There's my naughty little pupil… your honesty is quite shocking you know. I may have to give you exactly what you ask for."
He slid your skirt upward until he could press his hardness directly against yours skin. The heat of him made you moan with longing even as his fingers forced you to spread your legs.
"You already want me this much?" He asked exploring the slick wetness he found inside of you. He stroked his fingers against your entrance then slid them inside seeking the aching heat that could be
found there. The movement of his entering and withdrawing his long fingers was making your legs tremble and you core burn for him.
"I'm so ready for you to take me. Please Comte." You begged.
"Ah, but how shall I take you?” He teased.
Comte loved to ask questions seeking your response to everything he did to you. It was as though he were exploring every aspect of you intent to learn everything there was to know. What you needed.
What you wanted. What you felt when he touched you…
“Shall I be gentle? Tender? Drawing out every wave of pleasure until you beg me to finish you? " He asked. "Or shall I punish you? My naughty girl who daydreams during her lessons. Allowing her mind to
wander… to contemplate making love, instead of focusing on her lessons."
You were already so wet you were dripping down your thighs. At your moan of pleasure he pressed himself between your legs. He refused to enter you yet but just having the length of him so near made
your core contract with pleasure.
Comte's hands were hardly idle, however, as they drew away from pleasing you. They began exploring the curve of your stomach and your waist. Freeing you of the confines of your dress he began expertly loosening your corset. When those delicious hands at last cupped your breasts in gentle sensuous strokes another wave of damp heat dripped down your thighs.
"Was this what you wanted, ma Cherie? When you were daydreaming during your lessons. Or was it something significantly more naughty?"
“This is what I wanted Comte.” You admit summoning a triumphant chuckle from your lover.
Comte pressed you against the door his breath heated against your ear. "We are not finished yet mistress. For you see rebellious young ladies need to be punished when they lie to their Maestro. Are
you ready to be punished my little vixen?"
The devilish light in his smile was one you had seen only a few times. Yet it made your blood run hot with anticipation of just what he may have in mind.
"I am at your mercy master Comte. Punish me as you see fit."
In a smooth but firm movement he shifted his hips pressing your thighs open wider. You felt the tip of him tease your entrance.
Aching for him to be deeper you pressed back against him. A moan of frustration escaping when he did not thrust inside.
"How much do you want it, little one? And how hard?"
"I want it so badly Comte. Please!" You moan.
"That's only one answer. I asked two questions."
"Oh God Comte. Please take me hard. I need you so much. Just…. please!"
He nipped at your earlobe still refusing to move.
"Have I told you I love it when you beg me?"
"Comte-" you were trembling so hard you could hardly speak. His fingers had caught your hardened nipples and pinched them with just enough pressure to summon pleasure.
"You tremble for me. You ache for me. And you are only permitted to dream of me."
"Y-yes! Oh God yes!!" His first thrust broke your reply into a cry of pleasure. His punishing pace was far from gentle yet you gloried in ever thrust. Ached at every withdrawal. Begged him to fill you again and again with every cry of pleasure he summoned.
"That's it my little nightingale. Sing sweetly for me. Tell me how I make you want me."
"Oh Comte! I'm so close…" The trembling in your legs became too much to hold you up. To support you his hands at last released your breasts. Instead he wrapped his arms around your waist holding you
against him. Easing you through the orgasm with gentle thrust after thrust until the trembling inside of you reached its peak.
He turns you around to face him cradling your limp body against the warmth of his chest. He scoops you up into his arms and carries you to the couch where he settles you comfortably against his chest. Your
heartbeats mingling together as though put in sync by some unknown force.
Comte’s shirt was open though not discarded as were his trousers. Your own clothing had been tossed carelessly across the room landing on the desk. You stroke the exposed skin of his chest as he leans forward to place a kiss on your forehead.
“Was I too hard on you, my love?” He whispered. The vulnerability in his voice made your heart ache.
You propped yourself up on his chest so you could look down into those gorgeous golden eyes.
“That was perfect Comte.” You smile at him pressing a kiss to the corner of his mouth. “I assure you I am completely repentant and will never daydream during your lessons again.”
“Well I find that disappointing.” He chuckled. “Perhaps I’ll need to find other things to punish you for, then.”
“I’m sure that won’t be difficult.” You stroke his hair brushing it away from his handsome features so you can have a better look at him. “I love you Comte.”
He rolled over tucking you against him as he does and easily switching places so he is on top of you.
“Keep singing like that, ma cherie… and I’ll need to reward you for being so sweet.” His mischievous chuckle ends in a passionate kiss as he claims your mouth the way he had just claimed your body.
“I love you too, __. I hope someday I can express to you how fortunate I feel every time I hold you like this. Every chance I have to love you like this. Please never assume there is anything in this world I want more.”
“I feel the same. Every moment with you is so precious Comte. Please never let me go.”
“As my mistress commands.” He chuckled stealing another kiss. The first of many as your passion rekindled the burn of sweet longing his touch always inspired.

“After you, Mademoiselle.” Napoleon bowed looking every bit the royal guard he had been asked to play.
“Merci, Monsieur.” You couldn’t help the wry smile that played on your lips as you caught your lover’s emerald green gaze sparkling up at you even before he straightened from his bow. That was before you faced the difficulty of attempting to scale the steps of the coach in your rather elaborate outfit.
“It will be a long journey. If there is anything you require I will be happy to assist you.” There was a teasing lilt to Napoleon’s voice and you wondered if you’d dare landing on your face just to show him your independence. Then you imagined Sebastian exasperated expression upon being told you never managed to leave the manor. It wasn’t worth the butler’s wrath.
“This dress… is a bit voluminous. Could you erm…” You look warily at the coach and Napoleon’s all to familiar smile graced his mouth.
“Of course, Mademoiselle.” He offered her a gloved hand and assisted you into the carriage. A sigh of relief escapes your lips as you settle onto the seat.
Sebastian had outdone himself with this gown. Luckily you knew the evening’s events only included attending a play and then returning to the mansion.
Sebastian had somehow convinced Napoleon to do one of his ridiculous cosplay ideas during your evening outing. You were more excited about escaping the mansion with Napoleon than dressing up like an aristocrat with an especially attractive body guard in attendance. Yet Napoleon seemed willing enough to play along so you would too.
“Are you comfortable mistress?” Napoleon asked coyly.
“Only a bit lonely. You are riding next to me are you not.”
“If Mademoiselle commands?”
Oh that teasing smile. It made your heart do irrational things in your chest.
“I command it then. The ride would be far to dull without any company.”
Napoleon climbed into the carriage settling in beside you and lacing his fingers with yours in an all to familiar caress.
“As your heart desires, so it will be mistress.”
“I’m not certain these are proper seating arrangements, Monsieur Bonaparte.”
“Forgive me. I feared that the night’s chill had threatened my lady.” He drew her hand to his lips placing a tender kiss there. Her hands indeed felt cold compared to his warmth. “If I was mistaken I will
withdraw.”
“You are forgiven. I guess since you had my benefit in mind I won’t object to the seating arrangements.”
You wink and the sparkle in his eye as he laughed made you wish he’d never stopped. He had been so busy recently. Le Comte had been asking him to attend several events as a security measure and the
number of children he and Isaac were teaching during the day had grown exponentially. This time alone with him was precious. You had seen far too little of each other recently.
“I must admit a part of me wants to do the opposite anytime you give me a command like that.” He chuckled. “Of course another part finds it rather sensual. Perhaps we should experiment further with
your more demanding side? Only when we are alone, of course.”
“Of course. I would never want my Emperor to feel truly slighted. I love him far too much for that.”
“Awe but right now I am simply your servant, mi amore.” He leaned closer brushing a kiss against your ear. “…and I look forward to serving your every need with great anticipation.”
“Napoleon.” You breath his name a flush of heat traveling across your skin where he touched you.
“So informal, mistress? Perhaps I overstepped?” He teased.
“With as little as I’ve seen you? I’d say you are doing far too well at holding back.” You sigh.
Napoleon’s laughter flooded the carriage with a warmth you hadn’t realized you missed so much.
His hands released yours and his arms snaked around your waist drawing you against him despite the voluminous skirts that attempted to interfere.
“Perhaps you prefer an overzealous lover to an overprotective body guard then?” He teased pressing a warm kiss along your jaw. “Do you have any idea how intoxicating you look tonight, nunuche?”
“None at all monsieur. How about you tell me?” You teased.
“I see we haven’t put this act to bed yet. Perhaps bed is exactly where it needs to end.” He teased.
“Sebastian is expecting us back at the mansion after the play though. I’m certain it will be quite late—”
“We aren’t going back.”
“What?” You ask surprised at his interruption.
“This is my opportunity to show you how much I love your, _. Do you really think I’d allow Sebastian to do all the planning?”
“Are we even going to the play?” You ask noting his mischevious smile.
“Oh my mistress’s family believes we are. My plans are quite a bit more elaborate, however. Since I’ve rewritten the script to include eloping with her in some obscure French town with a delightful
cottage….”
“A cottage free of nosy butlers?” You ask hopefully.
“Completely butler free.” He smiled. “Since I’ve done all that I hope you’ll forgive me if we miss the play?”
“Do I have to wear this dress at the cottage?”
“Only if you insist.” He grinned.
“This plot twist sounds fantastic then.” You smile up at him. “Thank you Napoleon.”
“As I said, mademoiselle…. Anything you desire tonight shall be yours.”

Premise: Climbing Trees
You are working in the garden when you hear a plaintive cry. Upon searching for the source, you discover Vincent’s pet racoon Brush is stuck in a tree. Apparently, he was trying to get something shiny
out of a hollow limb and could not be convinced to let go and come down safely.
Deciding there was nothing else to be done you finally scale the tree in an effort to save the poor screeching creature. You discover that you can break away part of the hollowed part of the limb and
free Brush’s paw. With one more screech in your direction the racoon makes off with the shiny button—his new treasure—without a backward glance. It is only then that you realize your predicament.
Despite scrambling up the tree with ease in an effort to save the distressed animal… getting down was an entirely different matter.
Napoleon
Was the limb this high up when you first climbed this stupid tree? Seriously, good things were supposed to happen to people who did a good deed right?
Being stuck in a tree was rather embarrassing and when you heard a familiar laugh and looked down to see Napoleon you wished there was someplace to hide.
“Nunuche? What on earth have you gotten yourself into this time?”
“I was helping Brush get down, okay?” You sigh as you face flushed.
“You climbed a tree? To save an animal who has been climbing trees practically since the day it was born?” He asked skeptically.
“Yes. His poor little paw was stuck. Of course, by the sound of it you would have thought he was bleeding to death.” You sighed.
“I can imagine. So, you scrambled up there in a dress no less without a thought about trying to get down?” He smirked. “It appears your heart may be larger than you mind, Nunuche.”
“Since your head is so big it dwarfs your heart I wouldn’t expect you to know.” You snapped back grumpily.
Your comment had the opposite affect you intended and Napoleon was struck by a second laughing fitat your expense. If you hadn’t already kicked off your shoes in an attempt to climb down safely you’d have considered tossing them at his head.
When he finally calmed down, he said, “Come on Nunuche,
I’ll give you a hand.”
He drew closer reaching up toward you. He was nearly close enough to touch your ankle. Yet, you weren’t thrilled about the idea of dropping off the branch and into his arms.
“After you made fun of me and insulted me? No thanks. I think I’ll stay here until Sebastian comes looking for me.” You frowned at him sulkily.
“Will you now?” He smirked up at you moving his hands to his hips instead of beckoning you into them.
You blushed looking away from the pious Emperor. Napoleon really was the worst when it came to his teasing. You wanted to shake him every time he called you nunuche.
You were not silly! Of course, it would be silly to argue with him about it so you always just cringed and glared at him.
“Well if you’re going to be bitter about it… I may just mention to the others that you went into town with Isaac today.”
“You would not.” You objected.
“Isaac already asked Sebastian not to hold dinner, so I’m sure he’ll assume you won’t be hungry either when you return sometime late this evening.”
“Don’t you dare, Napoleon!” You gasped angrily at him.
“I would dare. Especially if you keep being stubborn about this. Refusing a perfectly good helping hand when I’m standing right here?” He made a tisking sound with his tongue as though he were chastising you.
It made you even more flustered, but you realized you couldn’t really try call his bluff without having to face the consequences. Spending the evening in this tree, or falling and having to explain why
your leg was broken, did not sound appealing.
“Fine. I accept your less than gracious offer to help me down, monsieur.” You conceded at last.
“Very sensible of you.” He chuckled. Reaching up toward you he was once again almost near enough to touch. Once you lowered your ankles off the branch a little further he managed to grab hold of them
and ease you down into his arms. You let out a sigh of relief before you realized he hadn’t set you on the ground like you expected.
“Napoleon? Put me down.”
He didn’t. Instead he laughed as he began walking across the lawn with you still in his arms. His handsome face far too close to yours for comfort. “Not even a thank you for getting you out of that predicament? I guess I’ll just have to treasure the sight of you dangling from a branch above my head then, won’t I?”
“You are the worst when it comes to teasing me you know that?”
“It’s a small price to pay for having me save you all the time, isn’t it?” He grinned back as he carried you over to the path and set you down on the bench. “Don’t climb any more trees before I get back.”
You made an indignant noise at his back as he walked back to the tree that held you prisoner. When he returned with your shoes, however, you found yourself more embarrassed than angry.
You hadn’t even asked him to help you… yet he noticed everything that happened before he showed up? Then helped you anyway?
“They don’t seem to have suffered any damage. You must have been quite angry to kick them off that far into the grass though.” He chuckled kneeling down and placing them on your feet.
“I-uh… thank you Napoleon.”
“What’s this? No more comments about my large head?”
“No…” You sighed blushing as you realized anything else you said would just make things worse. “I’m sorry for acting like that. I really am grateful for your help and for the return of my shoes.”
“A gravel path isn’t exactly friendly to bare feet.” Napoleon shrugged. “I assume you can find your way back to the front door without incident?”
You rolled your eyes. “If not I’ll follow the wall and find the back door eventually.”
He started laughing again, but it was nice that this time you were laughing a little too.
“I won’t worry about you for now then. Have a nice walk nunuche.” He said turning and walking away from you.
He disappeared into the trees with a flutter of that ostentatious cape. Leaving only an unfamiliar tune drifting after him as he whistled an old war song you didn’t know.
Le Comte de Saint Germain x Female Reader

Premise:
You didn’t mean to break the hour glass.
Usually you were so careful. You lived in a house full of vampires after all.
You’d accidentally cut yourself in the kitchen once while helping with dinner and Sebastian gave you the scolding of your life!
While the residents made great efforts to be civil there were still precautions to be taken. Plus, causing any of the other residents discomfort when they had all—in their own way—welcomed you and made a place for you in the mansion? That was the last thing you wanted to do!
Yet, there was another time Isaac had to leave the room when you had a mishap in the Library.
Leonardo was there and simply laughed as he helped you bandage your hand. “You need to be more careful Cara Mia.” He had teased.
“Please don’t tell Sebastian!” You sighed. “He really let me have it last time. I promise to be more careful!!”
Leonardo had laughed and agreed to keep your secret. You were indeed very careful the next week or so afterwards. Wearing gloves when it was appropriate and being extra cautious when you could not.
Yet this time… you were not so fortunate.
Comte
“__?” The familiar voice made you wince. Of course, he would have to hear that crash. His room wasn’t far from the room you were cleaning. You turn your head to meet the concerned golden eyes of
your lover.
“I’m so sorry Le Comte! I didn’t mean to break it. I know they each mean so much to you and—”
“Sh! Let me see it! No more apologies when you are standing here bleeding.” He took you by the wrist and turned your hand over to inspect the cut across your palm. A distressed expression crossed his face and he quickly withdrew a clean white handkerchief and wrapped it tightly around your hand.
“It appears to be very deep. Was only your hand injured?” He continued to inspect you with fervent anxiety.
“No. I’m okay besides this.” You clutch your hand against your chest. He promptly guides you to a chair with a sigh of relief.
“Are you feeling light headed?”
“No, just foolish. I’m so sorry Comte.” You figured it was safe to apologize now that you were sitting down.
“In comparison to you, my love, it is of no consequence.” He sighed smoothing your hair with a gentle and offering you a faded smile. Did he look a little pale?
“Give me a minute to clean this up? Then I’ll bring back the first aid kit.”
“Oh, I can get—”
“No.”
Your eyes snapped to his.
He had rarely ever used anything but a gentle tone with you. Even after you had admitted you were in love with him and time after time he had declined to reciprocate… he still remained so patient with you.
Yet so much had changed because of the events of less than a week ago. He had finally been able to open his heart to you. He had finally overcome his own reservations about allowing something as fragile
and precious as love to be a part of his life.
Le Comte had finally admitted he also cared for you deeply… the war between his heart and his judgement had been a fierce one. Ending only because circumstances showed you both how much you
needed one another. At last he had offered you the choice to go home or to stay. Promising that if you chose to stay with him—to love him—he would see to your every need and comfort.
You still remembered vividly the feeling in your heart when he first spoke the words “I love you.”
Yet now… it was almost as though he were a stranger.
This voice was the voice that made the other vampires go still. The voice that made even Leonardo’s
eyebrows raise. The voice that commanded submission to this dominant pure-blooded vampire
whom—despite his compassionate and considerate nature—was indeed the master of this mansion.
Those golden eyes held yours for only an instant before glancing away.
“Forgive me, but please stay here ma chère. Until I am certain you truly are well I would have you rest.”
“Comte… are you okay?”
A wane smile curved those beautiful lips of his. Lips that had claimed yours on several occasions now,
but had not yet claimed anything else.
“I am well, my dearest one. I fear I am just a bit anxious after seeing you injured like this. I apologize for
upsetting you as well.”
His expression gentled and you reached out to touch his hand giving it a gentle squeeze.
Oh! His hands were like ice!
You glanced at the floor where the shattered glass and spatters of blood marred the floor.
The blood.
Vampires found the blood of the one they loved especially enticing.
No wonder your lover was having this kind of reaction.
“No, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize… please send for Sebastian. There is no need to trouble yourself like this. I
promise to stay right here until Sebastian agrees I can move and—”
“Please don’t.” His hand cupped your cheek. “Don’t apologize just because you are alive—so beautifully
alive. I am grateful you are not injured further. So, please let me take care of you?”
“But doing that is causing you pain.” You object as he draws away and begins to dispose of the shattered
hourglass. “I can’t stand to know you are suffering Comte!”
He chuckled but doesn’t look at you murmuring, “If you only knew—”
“Only knew what?” You asked sternly when he breaks off.
Those soul searching golden eyes found yours. In the blink of an eye your face was cupped within his
hands and he pressed a kiss just to the left of your mouth.
“Let’s just say there are some pleasures, ma chère, that are worth great sacrifice. Even if it means experiencing extensive pain to seek them…” His eyes fell on your lips as his thumb stroked your cheek. “I will be but a moment my love.”
He left you with your mind whirling.
You had promised to stay here in the nineteenth century with him. Asserted that you would leave the
world you knew—the people, your job, everything—just to be with him.
Having you make that kind of sacrifice had upset him greatly. Yet you did it gladly if it meant being with
the man—well vampire—you loved.
You knew there would be challenges ahead. Yet you hadn’t realized he was already facing them.
Leonardo had mentioned the difficulty for a vampire to deal with bloodlust. The Rouge and Blanc
certainly helped… yet when it came to physical attraction and love… they were dealing with a new set of
rules.
Hesitantly you unwrap the handkerchief around your hand and look at the wound that opened your
eyes. How much pain had he suffered for wanting your blood? He said he wanted to give you time.
Those that had chosen to come to this mansion had lived their human lives… and then chosen to
continue to live this one. Le Comte did not want to rush you into this. He insisted he wanted to treasure
you as you were… and he would do so for as along as you chose to wait.
Yet there were chances you might lose one another… Just the though made your heart ache. Could you
truly make him wait knowing what he had to overcome every day simply to be near you?
“_! What are you doing?” Comte gasped moving quickly to your side and taking your hand. “It had
just stopped bleeding and now…”
He trailed off taking an unsteady breath.
“This hurts you… doesn’t it?” You ask gently.
“To see you in pain? Yes.” He said wrapping your hand again.
“Stop. Please look at me.” He paused and at last consented to meet your gaze.
“It hurts you to see me in pain. My love, it also hurts me to see you suffering. I know you promised me
as much time as I needed… and I promised you I would take it. We agreed we both wanted time before
making these choices. But Le Comte, I can’t hurt you like this.”
“Ma chere, it’s not—” He broke off his expression grim.
“I can’t cause you pain in this way. Is there nothing that can be done to ease it?” Tears stung your eyes.
“For if there isn’t… I don’t want to wait any longer to choose. My heart knows what it wants, Comte. I’m
confident that time will only reassure me this was the right decision. Whatever fears we both have
about this, I am confident we can sort out together. Just please… let me be with you in a way that does
not cause you pain?”
He chuckled but it seemed self-derogatory. “I put you through all this? Just by admitting how much I
want you?” He shakes his head. “If anything is comparable to what I feel when I’m near you—when I
sense your beautiful heart pumping life into you—I would compare it to lust, not pain.”
“What?”
“Oh trust me it is not at all comfortable. I have satisfied my thirst before—I have experienced a
unique variety of pain—yet this? This wanting to taste you? Wanting to possess you? Trust me it is it’s
own variant of emotional need.”
“You w-want—” his frank explanation stole away any other words you might have attempted to say.
“Just as you said, Ma chere, my heart also knows what it wants.”
You gulp trying to dig up some sort of coherent response. It definitely takes some time. Yet he waits for
you patiently. His timeless gaze gentle and filled with warmth.
“Then satisfy your thirst. Take what you need from me.” You whisper.
“I’m not certain you are prepared for me to do that.” He shook his head. His smile turning hesitant.
“I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t want this too. I don’t want you to suffer because you are holding back. Because
you are afraid you will frighten me. If you need something from me you have but to ask me for it. I love
you too much to deny you anything.”
He considers you carefully for some time. Finally reaching out his hand he takes yours. The one wrapped
in the makeshift bandage.
“If you truly mean that… may I ask for just one thing or now?”
“What is it?”
“May I taste you?” His fingers stroke your wrist sendinga tremor across the surface of your skin.
“You mean… from there?” You nod to your hand.
“I promise not to change you by biting you. Not yet. As prepared as you feel you are… I am still in favor
of allowing us to be as we are. Just for now.”
“Yes.”
He smiled. “I’m glad you agree.”
“No I mean yes you can—” You bite your lip nervously.
As understanding lights his eyes you feel his grasp on your wrist tighten the slightest fraction. It makes
your heart pound and your breath hitch.
“You are so generous, _. How did you ever come to trust me so much?” “You’ve never betrayed me trust… in fact bit by bit you have claimed my heart.” He tenderly began to unwrap your palm drawing near enough to encircle you with his arms as he worked. The angry slice across your palm came into view and he seemed to stop breathing.
Then, just as a lover would draw his beloved’s hand to his lips to place a kiss in her palm, Le Comte drew your hand to his mouth. The warmth of his lips as they moved gently over your skin seemed to set your hand on fire.
You tensed as you anticipated pain from his touch and yet the sensation was so pleasant you found yourself uttering a sigh instead of a gasp. You had no idea how long you sat there together, your palm held tenderly in his grasp as he gently took what he needed from you. When at last he drew away and rewrapped your injured hand his gaze seemed almost listless.
“Oh, my love.” You whisper gently. You had never seen him so at ease. As though the weight he always carried had been taken from him.
Once he finished warping the injury he wrapped his hand tenderly around yours and drew it once more to his lips. Placing a tender kiss there he whispered, “I do not have words to describe how satisfying that was… or how grateful I am you would trust me to taste you like that. You are truly incomparable, ma chere.”
“You feel somewhat better then?” You ask nervously.
“One thirst has been satisfied. Of course, that only leaves the other to feel more pressing. However, I can hardly complain when you’ve given me so much comfort tonight. Thank you, _"
“I’m glad… I am a bit concerned though. You mention your other thirst… but what of mine Le Comte?”
“Yours?” He asked innocently.
“Haven’t I a right to my own appetites?”
He chuckled. A sound warm enough to melt your heart even as you melted into the arms of your lover.

Yet, despite your efforts, there was another time Isaac had to leave the room after you had a mishap in the Library. Leonardo was there too and he simply laughed as he helped you bandage your hand. “You need to be more careful Cara Mia.” He had teased.
“Please don’t tell Sebastian!” You sighed. “He really let me have it last time. I promise to be more cautious!!”
Leonardo had laughed and agreed to keep your secret. You were indeed very careful the next week or so afterwards. Wearing gloves when it was appropriate and taking extra precautions when you could not.
Yet this time… you were not so fortunate.
Dazai
You cleaned up the wound as best as you could. It was very deep and it took some time to stop the bleeding.
The cut ran along your left forearm. You had nearly toppled onto the hourglass when it fell over.
It was very fortunate you had managed not to sustain more damage.
You’d cleaned up the mess as well as you could after tending to the injury, all the while feeling very downcast. You knew Le Comte’s collection was precious to him. You only hoped you could find some way to make it up to him for your blunder.
After that fiasco you decided to don your elbow length gardening gloves, (Yes, they were Sebastian’s suggestion.) and head outside to get some fresh air. You were weeding one of your favorite flower beds near the gazebo when someone called to you.
“Yumeko-san? Are you hurt?”
“Oh! Dazai! You startled me!” You gasp. In the shade of the trees he appeared even more surreal than usual with his flowing traditional kimono and cape. Added to those fascinating golden eyes,
you could swear he was some personage from a fairytale approaching you with a task or riddle.
If you blundered the task or answered wrong you would spend the rest of your life as his servant. Yet, if you found success he would grant you a wish.
“Yes, I’m sorry. I was cleaning and cut my arm. I thought the scent of blood might be a little less potent out here.”
“Is it still bleeding?”
You shrug holding your arm protectively against you.
He chuckled and settled down next to you. “Now now, Yuri-san let me see it. I cannot leave a fair creature, like yourself, alone and distressed beneath a shade tree.”
His teasing summoned a smile as it always seemed to. His light airy attitude always seemed to brighten a room. Since arriving at the mansion you’d often found yourself grateful for his company and advice.
“I was just thinking you seemed like something out of a fairy tale… some creature approaching me with a riddle or a task.” You laugh a little and allow him to take your arm and remove the glove. The bandage was indeed soaked with blood. You sighed in disappointment. Perhaps you had done a poor job of bandaging it after all.
“It must be very deep to bleed so much. How did you do this, Minako-san?” Dazai’s gentle eyes were so full of concern you decided to brush off the fact that he had just called you a third
incorrect name in less than five minutes. After all no matter how many times you corrected him he always called you something else.
“I was quite clumsy and knocked over one of Le Comte’s hourglasses. It fell and broke, then I managed to cut myself on the shards of glass. Now it appears I also did a poor job treating the
injury.”
“Let me get you a fresh bandage and I will see if we cannot manage better between the two of us.” Dazai smiled at you reassuringly before disappearing into the mansion in search of the first
aid supplies. Meanwhile you tried to calm your heart.
Holy France, he was so charming! There were times you wanted to reach out and touch his handsome face just to be sure he was real. His gentle smile had comforted you several times since your arrival. You found the oddities the other residents tended to tease him about unique and even endearing. He was always so kind and quick to offer you a bit of cheer.Â
“Thank you, Dazai-san.” You said with a smile when he returned with a box of bandages. He settled down beside you and took your wrist gently in his hand angling it so he could see the wound clearly.
“Is this… difficult for you?” You ask in a pained voice as you noted your arm had begun to bleed again.
“I believe the Greek Labyrinth would have been an afternoon stroll compared to this.” He replied.
When you gasp he chuckles, however, earning a glare from you.
“Awe, don’t be like that Yuki-san. I jest to earn your smile not your anger.” He teased, those gold eyes glittering. You hissed as he began to disinfect the wound again.
“So, since this seems in many aspects a fairytale encounter… what should I claim as payment for my assistance?” He asked concentrating on his work.
“Payment?” You ask in surprise as you watch him wrap your arm tightly putting pressure on the wound to stop the bleeding. He then held it firmly for a few moments waiting for the flow of blood to slow.
“Yes. If this were a story I would certainly demand payment after helping a beautiful lady.”
You summon another laugh from him with the glare you cast his way.
“Do not make these faces. Even when you’re angry you are quite beautiful here in the garden. It is hardly fair.” He replaced the disinfectant in the box he brought out before extracting
the bandages. Meanwhile he kept pressure on the wound with his other hand. “So, if you were telling the story what would you offer?”
“I don’t know…” You flush just thinking about it. Here this beautiful man is holding your arm and it strikes you as quite an intimate position. Then he asks you for a reward?
“U-usually the lady would ask for a kiss but that’s hardly—”
You break off as his gentle smile changes to a teasing smirk.
You open your mouth to scold him for teasing you again when he suddenly moves much closer. So close you can feel his breath brush your cheek and count every lash surrounding those enchanting golden eyes. You gulp.
“So you would offer me a sweet taste of you… that’s quite a reward. Are you certain?” He seemed to be searching for an answer.
For just a moment you imagine it. The feel of his lips colliding with your own. What would his kiss taste like? Would it be sweet or passionate?
You were almost startled when he looked away from you and slowly unwrapped your arm to check the bleeding.
“Awe much better, Songo-san.” He smiled, bending your elbow to inspect the wound more closely.
A mixture of relief and disappointment flooded your heart. He was just playing with you.
“Dazai-sa—”
You broke off as he leaned forward and in and extremely erotic manor ran his tongue slowly—God so slowly—along your forearm. As he moved languidly across the opening of the wound it felt somehow both like a kiss and a caress at the same time.
The feeling of the tender warmth of his tongue tracing against your skin sent chills down your spine and halted your breathe in your lungs. When he drew back his gaze, that tender gaze, remained on your arm tracing the burning path his tongue had taken. You stared at him—speechless—as his expression grew pained. Pained as though your injury were his own. At last he sighed and rewrapped the
wound without meeting your gaze.
As your shock at his actions faded an embarrassing fire burned across your skin. Everywhere he touched seemed especially hot. Yet nothing burned hotter than your face as he finished wrapping
your arm and met your gaze.
“I fear I am unworthy of such a reward my sweet enchantress. Forgive me for taking some small pleasure while caring for you?”
There was a sadness in his eyes. A heartbreaking sadness. You
had sensed such sorrow from him before-catching rare glimpses of it when he sat alone and unguarded-yet he had never showed it so openly as he did now.
You doubted you would have been more shocked if he had kissed you full on the mouth.
“It was too much to claim I see. Forgive me then? I shall not make such a trespass again.”
He moved to go but you reached out to grab his arm.
“Wait!” You objected and he paused but shook his head.
“I have upset you.” He apologized again.
“It is not enough.” You say firmly.
“Enough?” He asks looking confused.
That sadness. His sadness. You could not allow him to leave like this. Not when you owed him for so many small moments where he managed to put you at ease or summoned your smile. How
could you abandon him to sadness when he’d been a light for your own lonely heart here in this mansion?
You gulp and push yourself forward before you can second guess your actions.
“Worthy or not you earned your reward, Dazai-san. I owe you a kiss.”
Surprise flashed in those golden eyes for just a moment. He hesitated and you feared he would indeed pull away. Or laugh and claim this was all but another joke. You weren’t certain you
could handle either reaction.
You barely had the chance to blink and he was there. His hot mouth brushing over yours with surprising zeal. His hands moved smoothly to touch you, bracing the back or your head with the warmth of his hands. His fingers tangling in your hair and thumbs urging your chin to tilt upward. Angling your mouth just right for him completely invade you.
Damn, how could he kiss like this? With the fury of a storm and the fervor of the tide crashing against the shore. Wave after wave of passion attempted to drown you as his tongue thrust deeper and deeper as though intending to consume you completely.
When he pulled back at last regret flooded his gaze. He was no longer sad. Instead he was consumed by pain as he panted for air.
No! You couldn’t let those feelings consume him. You couldn’t allow him to rebuild the walls around his heart that he used to shield others from this pain.
“Don’t please! Dazai—” Your hands gripped the cloth of his Kimono tangling into it desperately as your emotions tangled together inside you.
“Just one taste and we are already cast out of paradise?” He breathed unsteadily. “As you wish then, __.” No sooner had your name-not some other name but yours-left his lips than they
collided with yours again.
Whatever regret—whatever fate—lay before you, neither of you could know. Yet, after this you knew, despite whatever was to come, you could never take back this moment. Never again bury
these feelings which were now burning inside you. Whatever the future held… this moment would remain. Living and breathing inside your heart, until your heart itself grew still forever.

“Isaac?” You called to your boyfriend almost shyly. Sabastian had told you to meet him in his study. You still weren’t quite convinced your brilliant mathematician lover was going along with this “White Day Role Play” thing. Yet you wouldn’t want to leave him waiting.
“Yes, come in please and take a seat. I’ll be with you momentarily.” Isaac said from a far corner sounding a bit nervous. He seemed to be buttoning up a… lab coat? Well that was new… and kind of hot.
“Isaac?” You asked.
“Please it’s Doctor Newton in the office. And you’re __?” He asked. “I understand you haven’t been feeling well. What seems to be the problem?”
He motioned for you to take a seat on his desk. Well it was about the height of an exam table… kind of.
“Oh—d-doctor Newton. I guess I’m not sure really.” You stumbled in your attempt to answer. It occurs to you that between the two of you he happened to be the better actor.
You took a seat on the desk as he came closer.
“Well perhaps I should give you a physical exam and see for myself. Now hold still please.” To your surprise Isaac proceeded to check for signs of illness. He meticulously examined your ears nose and throat as he asked you questions. He gently touched different parts of your face and neck. Yet you found you were still very aware that the person touching you was not—in fact—a doctor.
These probing hands and fingers belonged to your lover.
Consequently, every touch was familiar in an embarrassingly intimate way. Your heart rate accelerated rapidly as he took special care in
examining your neck causing a vivid blush to rise up your throat and across your face.
“It doesn’t appear to be a cold.” His focused professional air did little to settle your reaction to him. His familiar scent triggered memories of sweet and sultry moments within his embrace.
You certainly would not have this kind of physical response to just anyone.
“You do seem a bit flushed… but not quite feverish.” He concluded. “I suspect a more extensive examination is in order. Oh! I almost forgot to use the stethoscope! Sebastian would lecture me if I forgot that part!”
You giggled a little as he broke character for just a moment scrambling to correct his error. It was then you noticed his complexion was more rose colored than normal.
“Er-um-could you-uh maybe unbutton your blouse just a little?” Isaac fumbled awkwardly as he nearly dropped the stethoscope while attempting to hang it from his neck.
“My blouse?” You echo in surprise.
“Never mind I’ll do it. It’s not like I haven’t—er—anyway—”  Isaac reached for the buttons on your shirt and soon your face was as red as his. He then pressed the stethoscope against your breast and attempted to listen intently.
“Your heartrate seems rather erratic. Perhaps you’ve become overexcited about something?”
“Isaac.”
“Maybe I should check your reflexes and—” He broke off his explanation when you reached up to take his hand. You gently drew it upward and placed it against your cheek.
“Thank you Dr. Newton but I’m feeling a lot better actually.” You smiled.
This was so sweet of him. Even if it was Sebastian’s crazy idea he had certainly put a lot of effort into the role play. You couldn’t help being grateful for that.
Teasingly you added, “I think it’s because the one I love is taking very good care of me.”
His eyes—those beautiful eyes you adored—widened and he released an unsteady breath. An instant later he had pushed you back onto his desk.
“Are you certain _? There isn’t anything else I need to examine?” He asked unsteadily. You knew this look in his eyes. Even longed for it.
His face was especially flushed, leaning closer to apple red than ever, as he hovered over you.
The touch of his hands as he pinned your wrists felt especially warm and soothing.
“Isaac.” You whispered his name breathily far too aware of exactly how close he was and where he was pressed against you.
“It’s doctor….” He trailed off leaning closer to you nearly brushing his lips against your throat.
He exhaled a warm breath against your skin and you couldn’t help humming at the pleasant sensation.
“How am I supposed to pretend… when you smell so delicious?” He asked sounding especially discontent.
“Maybe we should stop pretending then… and do what we want to do.”  You suggest coyly. Â
He brushed his tongue along the nape of your neck—his favorite place to taste you–and you can’t help but moan in pleasure. “I’m afraid you may be right. I’m not very good at being a doctor… and I want you far too much to pretend I don’t.”
“Oh Isaac…”
He brings his face closer to yours forcing you to meet his passionate gaze head on.
“I’m not any good at fixing people… just things. Mechanical and mathematical things. Yet I desperately want to understand how your heart works. What will make you happy…”
“You. You make my heart happy Isaac. So please… touch me… do whatever you want to me. I’ll enjoy every moment of it. Because I love you, and I want…”
His mouth moved slowly, oh so slowly closer to yours and all coherent thought fled your mind.
The warmth of his lips as they moved sweetly against yours mades your heart soar.
“Oh Isaac. You… you make me so happy.” You whispered in between kisses.
“Then you’re really ok with me losing control?” He asked sounding ready to break.
You barely had a chance to speak your answer aloud before he did exactly that.  And whatever exam he planned to give you as a doctor couldn’t have been more pleasant.

"He asked that you meet him in the library."
Sebastian's words still made something in your stomach knot up. What did Arthur have in mind for this role play Sebastian had conned him into? You doubted Arthur was well versed in Manga or the Senpai-Kohai relationship.
As you enter dressed in the random "school uniform" Sebastian had insisted you wear for the role play you felt more than a little nervous.
You couldn't help once again trying to pull the skirt
down a little further.Â
"You're late again." Arthur's playful voice echoed across the bookshelves.
You realized he was… well dressed for the part. Instead of his usual attire he donned a school uniform—tie and all—and his appearance along with the smell of books made you feel you had somehow stepped onto a university campus.
Arthur’s glasses were on as he sat at a table with his back to you. He was studying the papers in front of him intently looking every bit the part if a serious student. "If you expect me to tutor you
I suggest you learn to be on… time."
He turned to look at you and suddenly trailed off. Removing his glasses he gave you a thorough head to toe examination paying special attention to the length of your skirt.Â
Those beautiful blue eyes of his were very adept at setting you on fire with only a look. Yet this time seemed even more intense somehow.Â
"I-I'm sorry." You mumbled with a gulp.Â
Arthur cleared his throat and managed to get back into character. Replacing his glasses, he managed to turn back to the papers he was examining.Â
"Now this grade on your last paper is ridiculous. Who puts a split infinitive right in the middle of your main point? It's like you are
begging the teacher for a bad grade!"
The seriousness in his voice made you want to laugh. Arthur was much more likely to tease than to scold and seeing him do the opposite made you want to giggle.
You approach the table where he is sitting to look at what he is holding. Then you gasp. When you attempt to snatch the paper out of his grasp, however, he promptly stands to moves it out of
your reach.Â
"Where did you get that?!" You demand your cheeks burning red with embarrassment.Â
"From your Literature professor of course. How else am I going to know what we need to study?"
"Arthur!" You try again and a mischievous grin appears on your boyfriend’s malevolent lips.
"Now now _, address me properly. It's Arthur-senpai."
"Give me back my journal entry! That's private!" And if your suspicions were correct this entry was mostly about him!
He finally complied with a chuckle. "It was on your floor under the bed. I assume your journal has seen better days?"
That teasing smile melted away your anger. Of course! Arthur would never damage something of yours on purpose. There were pages falling out of your current-well loved-journal and you desperately needed a new one.Â
As you look up into his enchanting blue eyes instead of feeling anger he made your heart rate shift to the all too familiar finicky pace it kept when you were near him.Â
"It has. You certainly surprised me though. I didn't think you'd read that!"
"Awe but it was very enlightening." He moved closer to you. He was angling himself so he backed you up against the table. "Who knew my little kohai had such a crush on me?"
He placed a hand on either side of you preventing escape. Not that you even considered it. He drew closer and closer almost touching you in so many places yet not quite closing the gap between you. His proximity was giving you plenty of non-senpai centered thoughts.
"Can you blame me?" You asked breathily as he kept that torturous amount of space between you. Why wouldn't he hold you? Why was he holding back? Usually Arthur was handsy enough to make the devil blush.Â
"Of course not but we will need to discuss that later. Right now we need to study."
"Study what exactly?" You asked. He leaned in closer and you gasped when you felt his fingertips brush along the skin just below the hem of your skirt.
"This skirt needs to be investigated you see. I don't know that it's the proper length and I suspect you obtained it from a questionable source."
"Sebastian would certainly qualify as questionable." You admitted.
"So you admit to breaking the rules? I should report you for that. Or punish you myself."
You somehow managed not to say, "Option two please."
When the warmth of his hand gripped your thigh aggressively you gasped. In the next instant he quickly captures your open mouth with his. The pulsing thrusts of his invasive tongue were the most delicious punishment. By the time he drew back you were panting.Â
"Arthur, what if someone comes to use the library?" You gasp for breath.
"I had Sebastian lock the doors after you walked in. We won't be disturbed."
"But Arthur-"
"I told you didn't I? It's Arthur-senpai. Now are you ready for your punishment my naughty little kohai?"
You nod and Arthur follows through with his threat. As always his form of punishment is one of the sweetest forms of pleasure you'd ever experienced.

Leonardo had laughed and agreed to keep your secret. You were indeed very careful the next week or so afterwards. Wearing gloves when it was appropriate and taking extra precautions when you could not.
Yet this time… you were not so fortunate.
Theo
You cursed as you wrapped your handkerchief as tightly around your wrist as you could manage hoping that would stop the bleeding. You closed your eyes for a moment willing the dizzy feeling to go away.
“I didn’t realize it—”
You broke off when you saw Theo’s expression. The usually fearless smirking art dealer appeared almost pale.
“You came here… like this?” Theo’s words wavered.
You pulled your hand back shuffling to the sink in the kitchen to clean and rebandage the room. You knew there was a box of bandages below the sink and you were just wrapping one around your wrist
before the world was spinning to fast.
You leaned against the counter taking deep breaths as you attempted to calm yourself.
It was just a little blood. It didn’t even matter! Just breathe. You’re fine. Just breath.
“__?” Theo’s voice actually sounded worried. “Do I need to go get… well someone? To help you?”
“It’s fine. I wrapped it tight enough to stop the bleeding. I’m just a bit dizzy.”
“You weren’t bleeding bad enough to be light headed were you?”
“No, it’s just… how I am.”
“How you are?”
“I’m fine if it’s someone else. I can handle first aid just fine… it’s just when it’s me that’s hurt…. when it’s my blood my brain kind of panics or something.”
“But… you’re okay right?”
“Yes! Just a little dizzy. It goes away. I just need to rest for a minute.”
Silence settled between them. For a moment you wondered if he left to finish working so the two of you would be finished by the time Vincent got back.
Then you heard a noise.
What the heck was that?
“Theo?” You ask.
“My feisty little hondje… is scared of blood?” Theo made the suspicious noise again.
This time it sounded significantly more like… well almost like he was laughing. You peeked up at him and wished you hadn’t. That smirk wasn’t as evil as his usual expression but it certainly wasn’t friendly.
Your face started burning with embarrassment and you hid your face in your arms. “Ugh! Shut up Theo!!”
You felt those burning blue eyes on you and wished you could sink into a hole and disappear.
Arg! You had worked so hard to help him tonight! And here he ends up laughing at you over your problematic mental phobia! How embarrassing!
A gentle touch made you freeze. Theo sighed next to you and stroked your hair again. “I’m sorry hondje. I shouldn’t have laughed. Here I was planning to scold you for coming to an art exhibition full of
vampires. Yet you didn’t even need that to regret it. Can I get you a drink of water or something?”
“I think I’m okay now. Is Vincent waiting for us? Do we need to—”
“I haven’t heard the carriage yet but we’re done here. We can go for a walk and get some air if that would help you feel better?”
As you made your way outside Theo locked up behind the two of you.
“Stay close hondje. Some stranger might think you’re a little kanbbeltje and try to take a bite.” He teased as you started down the street. You noticed he moved a couple of boxes from one side of the
back door to the other to let Vincent know the two of you weren’t inside. You’d gone with Vincent to pick up Theo before but this was the first time you were on Theo’s side of their bro-code.
You were out on the main street when Theo paused.
“Take my arm will you hondje? It makes me nervous trying to keep track of you. Vincent will be angry if I allow you to get lost.”
“You could just say it looks more natural like this. Or if you wanted to pull an Arthur—”
“No! No, I do not want to pull and Arthur!” Theo objected vehemently making you bust up laughing.
“Well at least I know you’re feeling better if you’re trying to tick me off.” He sighs glancing over his shoulder.
“Are you being followed?” You ask warily.
“Yep.”
“You know Arthur would explain the details of how he figured that out.”
“Shut up.”
“Fine. But if you’re worried tell me ok? Don’t pull a super-Theo and try to muscle through it on your own.”
“Har har… come on. Let’s go in here for a bit.”
“A pub?” You hesitate.
“Okay, I’m worried. Come on we’ll be safer with a crowd and this is one of the places Arthur frequents.”
“Meaning Vincent can find us here.”
“Very good Kanbeltje I should take you to dinner.”
“Never mind. I like grumpy Theo better. Sarcastic Theo is creepy.”
“Do you need to constantly connect my name with adjectives?”
“Only when you’re acting weird. I do this when you make me nervous.” You shrug.
“Ah so I always make you nervous.”
“Now it’s your turn to shut up.” You replied.
He laughed and pulled you around a corner then immediately pressed you against a wall.
“What are you doing?” You grunt suddenly very aware how close he was, and god those eyes were staring right into yours.
“We need to convince them our little outing is all about us. So, play along.” His voice was a low growl that made you shiver.
“I think you’re just enjoying pushing me around.” You grumbled attempting to be more angry than embarrassed. How did he smell so damn good after working like a—Oh god! His mouth brushed your ear!
“You need to laugh or talk sweet to me or they won’t go away.” He whispered.
“If I laugh, I am going to sound sadistic.” You whisper nervously.
“My other option is to bite you.” He warned suggestively.
“Awe you wouldn’t do that…” You sigh in as sultry voice as you can manage.
“Wouldn’t I?” His voice was so sexy you almost couldn’t breathe.
“How about we go upstairs and find out?”
“Upstairs? S-sounds nice…” You caught yourself.
“You are a terrible actress.” He hissed.
“Remind me to pinch you later!” You hissed back.
“Shit, you’re bleeding again.” He groaned his brows furrowing in real pain.
“Oh… I’m sorry Theo. Is it really—”
“It’s intoxicating.” His blue eyes met yours head on and there was a burning there that makes you gulp.
Hiss grip on your arms tightens and he presses you more firmly against the wall. You swear if you were capable of taking a deep breath you’d be pressing against him.
“You need to tell me to let you go right now, _. Or I won’t.” He warned. There was no escaping his gaze or his grasp on your own. You knew this yet you suddenly felt much more excited than afraid.
“Theo….” You trail off. Is he still just pretending? Or does he mean that?
“Say it hondje.” He demanded his voice sounded hollow. As though the words hurt him.
You stare at him speechless. What are you supposed to do? Pretend to be angry and push him away?
Was he really upset by your blood or was he just acting? You were suddenly too confused to tell.
“If you won’t turn me away… this is your fault then.”
“My fau—”
His large hands tangled into your hair and his breath brushed across your lips. You could almost taste his mouth and it made you feel so thirsty for his kiss.
It suddenly didn’t matter to you if this was an act or if this was his reaction to you being so close to him with an open wound. You couldn’t help licking your lips as you dug deep for the courage to speak.
“Don’t stop Theo.” You whispered.
You couldn’t be sure but you thought you heard him chuckle just before his mouth overtook yours. The sensuous heat of his lips moved over your own in a teasing burning kiss. Their caress spoke of a tenacious temptation you were suddenly dying to experience.
As the warmth of his kiss intensified you couldn’t resist darting your tongue out to taste his lips. He seemed to take that as an invitation and nipped at your tongue hungrily before chasing after it. Catching
your lower lip playfully between his teeth with a sound that was somehow a mix between a purr and a growl. No sooner did he release his love bite than he sealed his mouth to yours with a passionate thrust.
You didn’t bother to resist as his tongue pushed into your mouth tangling hungrily with yours. With firm sweeping motions that made logical thought impossible he summoned a moan with the assault he
instigated through his kiss.
You couldn’t think. You couldn’t breathe. All you knew was Theo’s kiss, his taste, and his scent.
And that you knew you wanted more.
Your body began to burn everywhere it pressed against the hard planes of his. Your hands fisted his shirt and a moan of disappointment escaped your lips when he pulled back.
“Keep in mind we’re in public, hondje. So please don’t rip my shirt.” He chuckled brushing a kiss along your jaw before backing away completely. “They’ve gone. Come on we need to go out the back door.”
He pulled you by your good wrist down the hall and out the back way. Exiting into the cool night air you realized your face was burning with the passion he built between you.
You found yourself grateful he was in too much of a hurry to look at you closely as you rushed down the street to the corner. There you saw a familiar carriage was waiting for both of you in the lamplight.

Jean regretted your first kiss.
You knew this. You knew the sting of it. The sadness in his eyes. The fear…
You still couldn’t make yourself regret it. You couldn’t make yourself afraid. Not of him.
When it came to Jean d’Arc your heart could not feel afraid.
He’d asked you not to seek him out after that. He’d drawn away after you’d spent so much time trying to draw closer.
“Can the damned sin, __? Can a demon fall further from heaven, when he is already a fallen angel?”
His questions from that night seemed to hollow out his soul. To eat at him continuously every moment he dared to exist. So even though he lived he still felt as though he were dying.
“I once knew what it felt like to live a life so full of hope and light that I believed no darkness could touch me.” He’d confided to you when you had convinced him to tell you more about himself. “I never faltered when it came to fulfilling my destiny. No matter what I was accused of, no matter who I lost… I knew my own pain, my own suffering, was simply part of my journey to fulfilling my mission. A mission that was greater than myself. More important than my own life or any of my own desires.”
“Yet here, as this fallen creature, this demon condemned to darkness…. my desires overcome my will. My thirst overcomes my own strength. I am weak as a child in the face of temptation. Here there is no saving light. Only a broken creature who once stood between the people of France and their destruction.” You had wondered about the burden of sadness he seemed to carry everywhere with him. It was in those few moments he had finally shown you how consuming that pain was.
“I was accused of heresy and burned at the stake… why couldn't I have allowed my suffering to end? What a fool I was to believe I could face this darkness… and still manage to save others.”
“I don’t know Jean.” You had replied, unable to keep your voice from trembling. “But when I look at you, I don’t see darkness. I see someone so selfless he’d pay any price to save another person. To protect the innocent, and the suffering… whatever demon you see when you look at yourself? I can’t see him. All I see is the most angelic person I’ve ever met.” Â
You hadn’t expected him to lean forward. To cup your chin with those long fingers of his, drawing it upward as he leaned in to press a tender kiss to your lips. The warmth of his mouth—of his touch—felt almost like a dream. For he drew away from you much like a dream faded into the morning.
“I believe, mademoiselle, that a woman as angelic as yourself may only be capable of seeing light in others. Even when there is only darkness left to be found.” With that he disappeared into the night. Leaving your heart aching and empty.
Tonight that ache felt sharper than usual.
“Jean.” You sighed peering down into the garden where he had so often walked. He always sought the solitude of the night, drawing away from the other residents like a shadow from the light.
Where was he now? It had been days since you had seen him. Despite your insistent inquiries both Napoleon and Mozart had left the question unanswered, and the worry you saw in their eyes made your heart clench painfully in your chest.
You did not have much more time before the door opened.
Would that night—that one kiss—be all you shared? Would Jean and all his burdens simply fade into your past?
The mysteries surrounding the beautiful man that haunted your mind seemed to multiply without any hope of your finding answers. You had a feeling that even if you left all of Jean’s secrets here with him in the past they would continue to haunt you when you returned home.
You drew away from your starlit view and instead headed downstairs into the deserted halls of the mansion. It was late enough that no one stirred. Well past midnight by your estimation. At times when sleep eluded you, you’d found one or another of the mansion’s residents also wandering the halls. Tonight, however, remained lonely and silent.
You were returning to your room with a tray of warm milk and some sandwiches, hoping that between the snack and a good book you could settle your mind. Yet, when you approached your door you were surprised to find that the hallway was no longer empty.
He stood just outside your door. Too far away to knock, yet staring at it as though he could not
tear himself away.
He was completely unmoving. You couldn’t even sense the motion of his breathing as you drew closer and he did not turn to greet you. Instead he remained a statue, as perfect and beautiful and timeless as any other sculpture.
You wanted to speak, to break the spell he cast. Yet your voice wouldn’t respond to your summons.
At last he exhaled and turned to look at you. That beautiful amethyst eye seemed deep as the night itself as he gazed at you.
He did not attempt to explain his presence, nor did he leave. Instead he simply looked at you as he would study a beautiful painting in the Louvre.
You bit your lip and finally summoned the courage to speak. “I missed you.”
Those three words were all you could find.
He nodded but still did not explain.
You found the courage to set the tray you held on a small table in the hallway and drew closer to him. Searching for something to say.
“Jean, I…”
“There’s light.” He said finally.
“What?” You asked looking up at him. His gaze was so intense it made your heart pound.
“When I’m with you… there’s light.”
You swallowed.
“I never thought it would find me again. I never thought—” He lifted his hand and placed it against his heart, curling his fingers against the fabric of his uniform.
“I thought darkness was my fate, __. But your light found me…” He said your name.
He always refused to speak to you in such a familiar way, but now your name on his lips made your breath hitch.
When he met your gaze his expression was pained, and a tear escaped and ran down his cheek.
You couldn’t bear it anymore. Whatever restraint you had shattered, and you rushed into his arms. Holding him close, a sob of your own escaped as his arms pulled you eve closer. When you lifted your face to his he began kissing you. Tender, insistent adoring kisses that stole your breath away.
“I love you Jean.” You whispered between kisses. “I love you so much.”
“__….” He spoke your name again with the inflection of surprise. As though the taste of it was so distracting, he didn’t know how to react.
Finally, he released the breath he’d been holding and whispered back.
“I love you… more than anything in this world. Please, stay right here. Let me love you with everything I have. For my heart is yours and only yours.”
“And mine is yours, Jean.” You replied. His mouth found yours again. Yet the passion behind his kiss had intensified. He pressed you back against the wall and the tenderness of his touch turned ardent and seeking. His hands reaching up to tangle in your hair as his tongue parted your lips and explored your mouth.
Every movement was heated and insistent. You needed to grasp his shirt front just to keep yourself upright. Your heart was pounding so fiercely you were certain it was attempting to escape from your chest. Yet all you could think of was Jean. All you could feel was Jean. He pulled back, breathing heavily, and you could see the internal battle he was waging for
control.
“I found people that needed my help when I left. People who couldn’t protect themselves. Who couldn’t finish their journey without a hand from a stranger. Yet, every person I helped made me think of you. I didn’t know why. I just couldn’t stop thinking about you.”
He reached up cupping your face in his powerful hand. The size of it seemed to dwarf your cheek, yet the warmth of his touch was so pleasant it almost brouth more tears.
“Then I realized it was their eyes. Everyone had this look—this light—in their gaze, and I realized that was it. That was what reminded me of you.” He smiled. Not his almost smile this time… it was the most beautiful thin you’d ever seen.
“It almost felt as though you’d followed me, as though you’d sent these people to help me see that I was wrong. That your light was strong enough to guide me. That your love was strong enough to help me.”
He took a step back and knelt down in front of you. Then taking your hands in his he pressed his forehead to them with a reverence that left you speechless.
“I pledge my heart to you, _. If you will accept my tattered soul, I offer you my life and all my love. For it was you that showed me how to break free of this darkness. To escape the trap of my existence and see beyond myself again.”
“Oh Jean…” Your voice faltered as you threw your arms around him, burying your face against his neck. Would he ever stop ensaring your heart like this? It was already his. How could he capture it all over again with his knightly valor and zealous pledges.
He stood scooping you into his arms and drawing you close enough to kiss. “May I enter your room, Mademoiselle? I fear I shall lose myself in my love for you…”
You smiled. “Yes, and I’d be happy if you did.”
“As you wish then, my love.” He smiled and carried you into his room closing the door behind him.

*Premise: (Sebastian’s story doesn’t fit the premise. So, I decided to toss it for this fic. I may use a similar premise for other characters in the future. Wow, these kept getting longer and longer… anyway on to the Vampiric Mansion!)
You rub your forehead where it still stings from the last forehead flicking inflicted there by your stuffy comrade. Why did he have to be so hard with his punishments? Yes, you messed up!! No, you did not do it on purpose!
So, you forgot that Theo hated cats!! So what?
Arthur and Vincent both seemed especially amused by the mishap. Now the poor sweet kitty you discovered while hanging laundry was no longer lost. Instead she was being safely returned to
her owner via Leonardo.
You were now coming up with a “thank you” dessert for Leonardo and apology pancakes for Theo. Maybe if you also added in free slave labor at Theo’s next art expo that could win you a touch of forgiveness?  It had certainly been an eventful morning.
“Something smells delicious. Are those for me?” A friendly voice came from the doorway and you sighed in relief as you saw Napoleon’s smiling face. At least it wasn’t Sebastian frowning at
you again. He had gone up to Le Comte’s office to take him his late morning tea and baguette.
“If you’d like some? Just a minute and I’ll get you a plate.” You hurry over to the cupboard to do just that. “You’re up early. Did Sebastian already wake you?”
“No, I’ve been up for a while. Jean and I were talking after a sparring match this morning. It seems he had an especially rough night.”
“I’m sorry. Is there anything we can do to help him out?”
“It’s hard to say with Jean.” Napoleon shrugged, but then his eyes lit up as you placed a plate of pancakes in front of him. You turned to away to begin another batch for Theo but not before enjoying that perfect smile of his.
"Thank you." He said as he began eating.
“Thank you, monsieur.” You replied. Those eyes were so gorgeous they made you pause before continuing your work. Yet as he dug
into his breakfast you decided you’d better move on as well.Â
You once again debated on teasing Sebastian about stealing away the Napoleon-waking duties.
You suspected the butler rather enjoyed Napoleon’s sleepy affection. Of all the residents Sebastian seemed especially taken with the former Emperor of France.
In fact, after the first morning you discovered Napoleon’s sleep-kissing tendencies Sebastian had refused to let you wake him anymore. Not that you could blame Sebastian. Napoleon Bonaparte
was certainly attractive. Yet, it did make you a little sad-maybe a bit left out-to think Sebastian’s fascination with Napoleon might be more than his usual historical fanboy reaction.
Â
“I think something’s burning.” Napoleon observed breaking you out of your musings between flipping pancakes.
“Oh no!!”
You rush over to the oven and realize you were burning the pie you’d made for Leonardo. You moaned in disappointment.
Great! This wasn’t going to be much of a thank you.
“I take it that was important?” Napoleon asked.
“Just a little.” You explain about the cat while you clean up the mess and finish the second batch of pancakes. Perhaps you should focus on apologizing to Theo first and then thanking Leonardo.
“Ah, so these pancakes were restitution?” Napoleon asked moving to wash his now empty plate.
“Yes, but I’m happy I could share them with you.” You offer him a grateful smile. This wasn’t the first time he had helped you in the kitchen. Napoleon was both a proficient cook and
dishwasher.
“So am I. If I want pancakes like this, I have to have Sebas make a batch for me after the Van Goghs have finished breakfast. I have yet to convince him of giving up the secret behind making
them so delicious.”
“That’s not really surprising.” You chuckle. “Also, it’s not surprising that he would. I think Sebastian would work miracles if it meant making you happy Napoleon.”
“What do you mean?” Napoleon asked drying the dishes and putting them away.
You shrug. “I just think out of everyone in the mansion Sebastian especially likes to see you happy.”
You pick up the stack of pancakes for Theo and excuse yourself to deliver them.
Theo begrudgingly accepts them with Vincent’s encouragement. Yet, upon returning to the kitchen You find Napoleon is nearly finished making… another pie?
“Napoleon?”
“I just meant to make the crust but I guess apology pancakes take longer to deliver than I thought.” Napoleon shrugged looking a little sheepish.
“You didn’t need to do all this!” His pie was certainly prettier than you own. Where did he learn to do the crust like that?
“And you didn’t need to give me Theo’s pancakes.” Napoleon pointed out adding the finishing touches. “Jut be certain not to let this one burn. It might hurt my pride a little.”
You laugh softly before looking around in alarm. “Napoleon! You are going to get me in trouble with that shady butler of ours for making you work like this!”
Your objection makes him burst out laughing. Of course that inspires you to wish to make him laugh again. There was nothing quite like the former emperor’s laugh. The two of you joke back and forth for a few minutes while the pie bakes.
Napoleon breaks through the revelry, however, when he says firmly. “I think your wrong by the way.”
“Wrong about…?”
“Sebastian. I really don’t think he values my happiness over the comfort of a certain resident that arrived recently.”
“What do you mean?” You reply with surprise.
“I think he enjoys his job, and he certainly enjoys making the residents of this mansion happy. But you haven’t seen some of the changes in him since you came. So I think you’ve missed how
happy he is to have your help.”
You rub your forehead self-consciously. “I think you’re missing the mark, Napoleon. If anything, all I do is make him mad.”
“I have never seen Sebastian trust anyone the way he trusts you, __.”
This time you actually laugh. “Trust me? He makes certain to only give me tasks I absolutely couldn’t mess up. Even those I still manage to perform below his standards.”
“Has he ever taken you off a task when you do mess up though?”
“No… he usually makes me do it again! Until I get it right!”
“See. He trusts you to improve.”
You role your eyes, then exclaim, “Oh! He did fire me from being your alarm clock!”
“Alarm…clock?”
“I mean from waking you up. He won’t let me do that anymore.”
“Huh, I guess you only woke me that one time didn’t you? I thought you just refused to come back.” Napoleon chuckled.
Â
“No. I just think Sebastian feels the residents and the hired help shouldn’t be sharing kisses every morning.” Your face burns and Napoleon seems to grow even more amused.
“You’re not exactly the hired help, but that is interesting. So, he prefers to keep your kisses for himself?” Napoleon’s expression is so thoughtful that his last question hits you unexpected hard.
“What?!”
“Isn’t that what you just said?” That glint in his gorgeous eyes told you he was playing with you but you were too flustered to call him out.
“N-no! Sebastian wouldn’t—I swear he doesn’t even see me as a woman! Not to mention someone he’d want to kiss! I was talking about kissing you!”
“Right. He doesn’t want me to kiss you.” Napoleon shrugs.
“No! He doesn’t want me to kiss you!!”
“When did shouting become a normal kitchen activity, ?” Sebastian grimaces from the doorway.
“Oh! Sorry Sebastian!” Your face flushes red as soon as you turn to face the well-groomed butler with the wary expression.
“So, great news Sebastian! _ made pancakes for me already so you don’t need to worry about feeding me breakfast.” Napoleon says gallantly as he pulls his pie from the oven. This one—unlike its predecessor—is a mouthwatering golden brown.
“You’ve decided to start baking again Napoleon?” Sebastian asks.
“Actually, I caused a bit of a fiasco with _’s first pie. I had her serving me pancakes instead of tending to it.”
Napoleon gives you an apologetic glance.
“Napoleon is being generous as always.” You sigh, knowing you’ll likely get a scolding from Sebastian for being distracted later.
“Well if you can spare her company, Monsieur Bonaparte, could I steal her away to help set up for lunch?”
“Certainly, Sebas.” Yet just as you go to leave the kitchen in Sebastian’s wake, Napoleon calls you back. “Sorry Sebastian, I just had one more thing to ask her.”
“Very well.” Sebastian nods stiffly and agrees to meet you in the dining room.
“What did you need?”
“I need to clarify something. You said you don’t believe Sebastian sees you as a woman? Or as someone he would want to kiss?”
You bite back an embarrassed retort. Yelling at Napoleon over this would only get you in deeper trouble with your superior. “Yes, that is how he sees me. That is definitely how he treats me.”
“Then you need to realize something. With a woman like you that is an impossibility.”
“Wh-what?”
“I’m saying there is no chance Sebastian doesn’t find you attractive. If there is anyone here that is blind to the other’s virtues that would be you.”
“Virtues? What virtues?”
“Sebastian is a man and he most certainly finds you attractive. You being ignorant of why he wouldn’t want another man kissing you does not change that. Yet I doubt he has missed the fact
that you seem unaware of him.”
“Unaware…? I spend more time with him than anyone, Napoleon. How—”
“Just trust me, _. As confused as you might be? I doubt any man could see the two of you together and not see him as an opponent. Perhaps you should consider that as you work together. Maybe that will open your eyes to what exactly he does see when he looks at you.”
With that Napoleon turned and proceeded down the hallway in the opposite direction from the dining room. You knew he was most likely heading for the stables. He tended to get anxious if he didn’t go out riding everyday.
You try to shake off the disconcerting conversation and go to help Sebastian. Yet you entered the dining room to find the table already immaculate. Your eyes widened as you noted the perfection of the placement of each napkin, cup, and plate. Lunch wasn’t necessarily a banquet by any means but…
“Sebastian?” You ask the stillness of the room. How had he done this all so quickly? Had Le Comte finally bitten him at tea time and granted him a “taste of eternity?”
“So, you did plan to participate in our duties today? Splendid.” Sebastian’s sarcastic tone was enough warning for you to back away from him.
“Of course. You asked and I came—but it seems I was not quick enough. I’m sorry Sebastian.”
“It is of no consequence.” He stated setting down the steaming dinnerware he had obviously just extracted from the oven.
Well that was obviously a lie.
“What can I help with now?” You ask trying not to be hurt by his biting tone.
What had upset him? Usually even when Sebastian was scolding you he maintained his “dignified air.” The only time you ever saw that mask slip was when he was fanboying about one of the historically famous residents.
“Oh, I’d be remiss to ask too much of you. I have this well in hand. Go ahead and return to flirting with Monsieur Bonaparte.” He set the next tray down firmly enough to rattle the contents.
You flinched. “Is that what upset you? He woke up so you missed out on a morning kiss?”
“I missed—what?” He glowered at you. “Were you born this naive or did you simply leave your brain in the present?”
“Sebastian!” You snap back angrily. Usually even his scathing remarks weren’t that harsh. What had gotten into him?
When he didn’t apologize you huffed and angry reply. “I may be naïve compared to your extensive experience in the matter, but I’m not completely blind. He is your favorite after all, is he not?”
“Who?”
“Napoleon! You’re must be upset that I made him pancakes so you missed out doing it yourself. You also didn’t get to live your fantasies this morning because he woke up early to spar with Jean. Pardon me for finding your angst offensive, monsieur, but none of that gives you the right to snap at me or insult me.”
“What fantasies are you talking about?”
“You’re infatuated with him, aren’t you?”
“No.” Sebastian nearly gaped at you. “Y-you little idiot! Excluding one exception I could care less who Napoleon flirts with. It’s your foolish little games that are going to drive me insane before this month is up.”
“What games? I’m not playing at anything you big dumb stuffy butler!!” You reply losing your temper. “Napoleon was just helping me because I was kind to him. If anything, you seem to be the one playing games! Asking me to come help then doing everything at top speed so I couldn’t touch your immaculate—what are you doing?”
Sebastian stormed over to you and had you backed against the door in an instant.
“Games? I’m the one playing games? How could I play when you don’t even seem to know the rules?” There was a light in his eyes that make your stomach clench uneasily. Why was he so close? Weren’t you just fighting?
“Time after time I’ve warned you to be cautious! To be more aware of your surroundings and exactly who you are alone with. This mansion happens to be full of red-blooded men who find you quite attractive.”
You didn’t think it possible but he leaned in even closer trapping you in such a way that made your heart pound. “It is only Le Comte’s warning that you are not to be pushed into anything without your consent that has kept you untouched. Yet you have no idea—do you?—what you do to a man. I can only imagine what you do to a vampire.”
His glare was so heated and passionate you could hardly think to reply.
Â
“Continue to break the rules and a forehead flicking will be quite a forgettable punishment!” He warned.
“What rules?”
“The first rule is to know your opponent. Yet you’re too blind to even realize that is exactly what I am.”
“An opponent? But we work together. We aren’t competing!”
“The next rule is to be quiet when you have no idea what you are talking about.” He grumbled.
You shut your mouth.
“The final rule is that the person to break the rules is to be subjected to the other’s whims. Whatever that entails. Unfortunately, you’ve already lost. Failed miserably in fact. For you never saw me playing to
win when you were too blind to see me at all.”
You gulp sensing the hurt behind those words.
“I see you Sebastian.”
“Oh, do you? No. What you see is a stuffy butler or whatever else you called me. Not the man who plays to win. Not the man who sees the perfect play for every situation of every game. Not the man who has caught you before you even knew—”
He broke off cupping your chin in his hand tipping it upward until your breath mingled with his.
“Before you even knew I wanted you to be mine.”
Your eyes widen.
“Akihiko?” You whisper his name, yet your unable to summon any other words to your lips before he collides with you.
The feral heat of his kiss is so shocking that you hardly have the presence of mind to accept it.
Not to mention manage to reciprocate. Yet as his hands find your hair, as his mouth explores yours, you find your senses awaking with a start. Every sound, every motion, every color of the room mixes together into a blur of passion as Sebastian claims kiss after kiss from your mouth.
At last he pulls away still holding you trapped between him and the wall. His eyes are so full of turmoil it is difficult to read any specific emotion there.
“Have you learned your lesson?” His voice sounds grave. Far less angry. Yet, not at all warm or passionate like the taste of his kiss.
“No.” You reply. “I obviously need more practice at this game because that was completely unexpected.”
Sebastian’s eyebrows raise in disbelief before his severe expression breaks and a laugh escapes.
“You are absolutely impossible.” He sighs shaking his head in disbelief. “Perhaps we should discuss our game further in private? The residents will be here soon for their lunch.”
“That seems appropriate, but Sebastian? I’m sorry.”
“For what exactly?”
“For what I said… and what I assumed. For someone who notices every detail the way you do I can’t imagine how frustrating it is to have me here.” You realize your ignorance of his feelings
have hurt him.
You hadn’t meant to be blind to how he felt. You simply didn’t expect to be here long enough to allow for anything like this. Yet here he was… someone you respected and admired so much. Someone you owed so much too and absolutely did not want to hurt.
You’d thought many times about how handsome he was, or how indispensable he was to the residents, you just hadn’t thought of what he could mean to you. You hadn’t dared to. His choice to stay here, to serve Le Comte and the others, had already been made long before you met.
He shakes his head and reaches up a hand to smooth back a lock of your hair.
“Frustrating? Yes. But I never claimed it was unpleasant.” The hesitant affection in his eyes makes your heart pound. Then he straightens and moves away. You recognize his shift into “butler mode” and attempt to follow suit.
“Shall we get to work?” He asked.
“Under one condition.” You reply.
“Which is?”
“We need to talk about this. Tonight, after dinner maybe? Will you join me for tea?”
A gentle smile warms that immaculate expression and he give you a small bow.
“As you wish.”

Vincent
You considered your options carefully—wishing you had done that before you scrambled up the tree after brush—the biggest problem seemed to be your shoes. While they were sensible enough for
working around the mansion doing housework, they certainly weren’t fit for climbing trees. You considered if you should take them off and toss them to the ground. Even if the rough bark scratched up
your feet a little it would still be safer than falling, wouldn’t it?
“_? Is that you up there?” A familiar angelic voice asked from below.
The question was followed by a familiar string of chitters. You peered down toward the ground and found Brush and Vincent looking up
at you anxiously.
“Ah… hi Vincent. Nice day for climbing trees, right?” Your face suddenly felt like it was on fire and you could only hope that the shade of the tree masked the effect a little.
“Brush just ran up to me acting quite agitated. I take it he is the reason you are in this predicament?” Vincent asked pressing his lips together in an awkward manner. You realize he was trying not to smile.
Great, if this situation made the resident angel laugh at you it must be amusing.
“Yes, actually…” You sigh as you admit the truth.
“Well then, since you helped Brush I think I certainly owe you a hand.” Vincent said kindly. “I’ll be right back. I think I saw a ladder in the gardening shed.”
You sighed in relief at those words and watched Vincent disappear around the corner of the mansion.
Soon he came back lugging an old wooden ladder which he placed against the tree.
Now for the next problem. How to climb down without flashing the poor vampire below you. You tried to gather your skirts semi tightly around one arm, but it definitely wasn’t working very well. Seeming to realize your attempt at propriety Vincent’s face had gotten a little rosy.
“Do you want me to close my eyes while I hold the ladder? Or just back away?”
“I-uh-I don’t know.” You blushed trying to get your foot on the top rung and—
You definitely missed.
You instead accidentally kicked the ladder over and the motion made you lose your balance. You fell on top of your rescuer with a thud, hardly having a moment to blink before you were on the ground instead of in the tree.
“Ow.” Vincent groaned beneath you. You immediately began scrambling off the poor man.
“I’m so sorry Vincent! Are you hurt? Did I break anything? Theo is so going to kill me for falling on you!!”
You panicked as you tried to help him up. Unfortunately, he was laughing too hard to make your efforts very effective.
“I’m so sorry _. That was just so unexpected. I didn’t think I’d be rescuing a pretty lady from a tree today, and I certainly didn’t expect her to land on me.”
He wiped at the tears that escaped from the corners of his eyes as he laughed. It was such a beautiful contagious laugh that soon you found yourself laughing too. Luckily you both managed to calm down
and get to your feet without upsetting Brush with your odd behavior.
The racoon simply watched the two of you warily as you went with Vincent to put the ladder away. The two of you were still apologizing
and laughing every few minutes as you returned to the mansion.
“Are you really okay?” You asked.
“I’m the one that should be asking you that. You fell the furthest.” He laughed. “And I promise not to tell Theo you landed on me. Although it may not completely remain a secret. I don’t know if I can keep a
neutral expression around you anytime soon.”
His grin was still angelic. You wondered how he managed
to be endearing even while he was teasing you.
“Well you are welcome to smile and laugh all you like, Vincent. As long as it doesn’t make me incur your little brother’s wrath.” You laughed.
“Who exactly was going to incur my wrath, Hondje?” Theo asked stiffly. He was standing on the pathway up ahead of them with a grim expression on his face. His fierce blue eyes—so similar to Vincent’s—were far less welcoming.
“Theo, you’re back early? I take it the sale went well?” Vincent asked brightly.
“Yes, it did.” Theo offered his brother a gentle smile before turning a glare on you. “You aren’t making a nuisance of yourself, are you? Vincent was supposed to be painting this afternoon not returning lost pets to the mansion.”
“Ah no, Theo. _ was helping me actually. You see Brush got into some trouble. I was very fortunate she came along to help.”
“Brush?” Theo was still staring at you and raised a skeptical eyebrow.
“Yes, the curious little fellow managed to tangle up his paw and couldn’t get free. Poor Brush was alarmed enough to alert the entire neighborhood.” You shrugged.
“Anyway, I’m off to start painting again now that I’ve thanked _ and walked her back to the Mansion.”
Vincent shrugged, “Do you want to come see what I’m working on, brother?”
“So, she didn’t distract you completely from your work?” Theo looked genuinely surprised.
“Theo.” Vincent said his brothers name almost sternly.
“I’m coming. See you at dinner kanbeltje.” Theo said reluctantly following his elder brother.
You watched them disappear along the path into the garden, marveling for a moment at the contrast the two of them represented. Then you slipped into the mansion to help Sebastian prepare dinner.
It was Sebastian that had to point out that you had a branch from the tree poking out of your hair.

Isaac
As you watch the racoon disappear you found yourself envying his freedom.
“Seriously Brush?” You asked despite doubting he could hear you. You glanced around and not seeing anyone around that could possibly help you—or just embarrass you—you decided that one way or another you were going to get out of this tree. Hopefully without breaking something?
You scooted back to the main part of the trunk of the tree and you were just trying to lower yourself closer to the ground when a voice startled you.
“What are you—”
The exclamation was cut off by your own startled yelp. You were so surprised your grip on the branch slipped and down you tumbled onto… someone.
“I-Isaac?” You asked in disbelief when your eyes focused on the person you’d landed on. Okay so he’d actually partially caught you before the momentum of your fall pushed you both onto the ground.
“What in all the heavens were you doing up there?” The usually reserved and quiet vampire demanded. “That kind of fall c-could—uh—”
Suddenly realizing how close the two of you were—and that you were on his lap—Isaac’s face went bright red. “C-could you get off me please?”
“Y-yes! I’m so sorry Isaac! I can’t believe that happened. Are you hurt?” You scrambled off of his lap getting to your feet and offering him a hand up. He took it hesitantly but drew his hand back quickly as soon as he was on his feet again.
“No, I’m fine, but… What do you mean you can’t believe that happened? Do you have no concept of gravity?” His ears were even redder than before and he would not look you in the eye.
“Well I—uh—may have miscalculated the velocity of my descent.” You tried to sound as apologetic as possible, and he actually looked up at you in surprise.
“Oh…well… I guess that… wait! You aren’t patronizing me, are you?” He folded his arms defensively.
“No! I really didn’t think I’d fall like that!” You protested.
After seeing the way Arthur and Dazai were always teasing him you couldn’t blame him for the skepticism.
“Good.” He huffed looking only slightly relieved. “I wouldn’t try that again, either. You could easily break something in a fall like that.”
“I promise I won’t. Next time I’ll definitely find a ladder before even attempting to climb that high.” You tried to be reassuring. “But, thank you for—uh—interfering with my velocity.”
“You’re welcome, I guess? I—uh—I’d appreciate if you wouldn’t mention this to anyone? I’m certain Arthur and Dazai would start teasing me about thinking you were an apple.”
You barely managed to stifle a laugh, “No way! I promise I don’t want them to know about me falling from a tree either. I really am sorry for landing on you.”
Isaac shrugged. “As long as neither one of us are hurt there’s really no need to mention it.”
His ears were getting red again, and it was pretty adorable.
You glanced away hoping that by not staring at him he could feel a little less embarrassed. When you did, however, you glanced instead at the branch you’d fallen from. Suddenly your stomach did an anxious flip.
Isaac wasn’t kidding! That branch was much further up than you’d realized, and you really could have been hurt.
“Could I bring something by to your room to say thank you?” You asked, suddenly feeling like you owed him more than an apology. “I wouldn’t want to interrupt your work, but I have this apple turnover
recipe I’ve been dying to try… could I possibly bring you one?”
“I guess so… If you really want to that is? If you end up too busy to make them though don’t worry about it.” Isaac said backing away from you self-consciously. “You really will use a ladder next time?”
“Yes! I promise.”
“Good.” With that and a wave he left.
The shy vampire wasn’t quite fleeing the scene, but you suspected he’d reached his limit at completing that much small talk with you. Maybe you should ask Sebastian to deliver the turnover so the poor man wouldn’t have to relive his embarrassment in front of you again later?

“Sasuke. Please explain why this woman is in Azuchi after you helped her the night of Honno-ji.” Kenshin spoke decisively but didn’t even spare a glance for his ninja. Instead he watched Mai like a cat observing a rodent.
“Lord Kenshin, this is Mai. She was on a pilgrimage to Azuchi because she has a job working for a warrior family here.”
“Working for a warrior family or joining them?” Yuki snarked.
“I said I was sorry Yuki. I seriously-“
“If you think I’m going to forgive your tendency of tackling and attacking people, boar woman, you’ve-”
“Call me that one more time and I’ll kick you and mean it!” She warned.
“I’d like to see you try it.” Yuki glared.
“Yukimura it is usually protocol to remember someone’s name especially if a friend of yours introduces them to you. Isn’t that right Lord Kenshin?”
“Why would I bother to remember the name of a suspicious woman when I can just kill her?” Kenshin asked his cold eyes holding her captive.
“There will be no killing my friend either, Lord Kenshin!” Sasuke intervened actually moving to stand between her and his liege lord. Obviously he seemed the more viable threat in Sasuke’s eyes. “Mai is my friend. She speaks a similar dialect as I do and we discovered we come from the same region. I’ve been trying to help her settle in here. She’s been kind enough not to say anything about us sneaking around enemy territory. She has my trust and Yuki’s also. Right Yuki?”
“I trust her mouth if not her feet.” Yuki admitted.
“I said I was sorry.” Mai sighed. “Seriously, two ronin just tried to beat a guy up. Things like that don’t usually happen on my lunch break! All my self-defense instincts are on overload.”
“She speaks the truth.” Kenshin said but he still seemed skeptical. “Very well. Swear on your life that you will not betray us to Lord Nobunaga or any of his subordinates. If you break your vow your life will be forfeit to me.”
Mai gasped. Her life? Man these guys took promises seriously. She glanced at Sasuke who seemed at a loss for what to say to his sword-happy liege.
Suddenly Kenshin’s sword was at her throat. “Your oath, woman, or I take your head.”
She stared into those ice cold eyes. One green one blue yet both otherworldly.
“Lord Kenshin-” Sasuke started to object.
“I swear I will not betray you.” She spoke the words he asked for and she meant them. She had no intention of betraying Sasuke or the other’s to the Oda forces. It wasn’t her place to start the war prematurely. Also having war break out in the middle of Azuchi would have consequences she did not want to think about. .“I won’t reveal that you were in Azuchi. Not to your enemies or anyone else.”
“Very well.” Kenshin sheathed his sword. “Sasuke I’ll be at your safe house. See to her arm before sending her away.”
With that Kenshin disappeared around the corner into the streets. Mai couldn’t help a relieved sigh.
That was one warlord who was far too sword happy for her liking.
“I’m sorry Mai.” Sasuke spoke sheepishly, “I’ve tried to convince him that threatening the lives of strangers does not leave a good impression.”
“Threatening the lives of allies doesn’t either yet he continues to do it on a regular basis.” Yuki grimaced as he got to his feet. “As pleasant as this visit has been, boar woman, I think I’m going to take my leave.”
She glared at him. Then she noticed the weary sigh that escaped Sasuke and decided to cut her favorite ninja a break. “I really am sorry Yuki. I need to head home for today but some other time could I please treat you to lunch or something as an apology? I really really did not mean to attack you on the second day I’ve known you.”
Yuki paused his departure and glanced at Sasuke who shrugged.
“Fine. Meet me tomorrow at mid-day at my booth. The afternoons are usually slow anyway.”
“Ok! I’ll be there!” She sighed with relief.
“No kicking anyone though. Got it?”
“I swear! I will take the entire day off from kicking people.”
“Good. See you later Sasuke.”
With that Yukimura disappeared down the ally. Sasuke drew closer and lifted her injured arm to inspect it.
Oh yeah, Kenshin ordered him to do this. She hadn’t expected Kenshin to recall she was injured during that scuffle. That he would ask his own ninja to check on her, however, was almost as confusing as the rest of the experience.
“It looks like the muscles have been strained but nothing serious. It will likely bother you for several days however. I’d rest it as much as possible so it can heal properly.”
After that observation Sasuke took out a salve to apply to the swollen part of her wrist and elbow.
“Thank you for helping me Sasuke.”
“After my liege lord threatened to kill you? It’s the least I can do. I really am sorry about him. He isn’t normally so-”
“Stabby?”
“Aggressive. At least not when it comes to women. Usually he acts like they are invisible or interacts with them as little as humanly possible.”
“He doesn’t like women?” She asked.
“More like he doesn’t acknowledge their existence. So that he noticed you and remembered who you were?” Sasuke shrugged, “I’m just really surprised.”
“Sasuke…are you safe working for Kenshin?” She asked hesitantly. She felt like she was trying to offer an abuse victim an opportunity to ask for help.
“Safe wouldn’t be the term I’d use. However, despite the impression he just gave you Kenshin is actually very strict as far as his code of ethics. He would never act dishonorably towards a subordinate. Also, he would never intentionally harm someone weaker than himself outside of battle. He does often express affection in odd ways. However, I wouldn’t be the ninja I am today without him.”
Despite his tranquil demeaner Sasuke spoke rather emphatically of his Lord’s good qualities. Someone who had earned Sasuke’s trust had to have his good points-right? Mai decided if she ever ran into Kenshin again she’d make an effort to not set him off. Hopefully then she might see some of the better points Sasuke saw in him.
After Sasuke walked her back to the outskirts of the castle Mai hurried inside. Hideyoshi was expecting her to return with the special candy he had asked her to pick up as a surprise for Lord Nobunaga.
Hideyoshi’s dark expression, however, was not the greeting she had hoped for.
“I take it I’m late?”
“Not just late, Mai, I’d say especially late. It is nearly dark and you left before lunchtime.” Hideyoshi scolded her. “I don’t mind if you window shop a bit while you are out on an errand but making me worry something happened to you like this is unacceptable.”
“I am so sorry I worried you. I truly did not intend to take so long.” She even bowed to him apologetically. The last thing she needed was another warlord angry at her today. “Azuchi is so much larger than I realized and it took me much longer to get back than I though it would. I promise I will be much more conscientious about returning early enough not to worry you again.”
“Were you able to pickup Lord Nobunaga’s candy like I asked?” Hideyoshi seemed to accept the apology at least.
“I did! Here.” She handed over the bag of konpeito she’d found at the shop Hideyoshi had asked her to visit. “I was also able to find the sewing items I needed at the shop you told me about.”
“I’m glad to hear it. Now, I was wondering if you’d be interested in doing some repair work on a Haori Coat for Lord Nobunaga?”
“What?!” Mai was really surprised especially because Hideyoshi had still seemed so suspicious of her.
She’d been doing her best to earn her trust but if a poison needle were to show up in his coat Hideyoshi would be most likely to blame her! “Are you sure you trust me to do that?”
Hideyoshi actually laughed at her incredulous response. “Of course I would. It is a small repair and I felt it might give you an opportunity to show him some gratitude for giving you a place here in Azuchi.”
Mai blushed. She really hadn’t been able to show much gratitude to Lord Nobunaga. Well not in the way he expected her too. She’d dodged his attention whenever she could. He seemed to be reluctant to enjoy her company against her will and Mai was relieved about that. Still how do you show gratitude to a guy who gave you food shelter protection and a job?!
“I’d be grateful for the opportunity Hideyoshi. Please let me know if there is any thing else—er—sewing-wise I can do for Lord Nobunaga. I would be happy to express my gratitude to him in that manner.”
“I’ll keep that in mind. Now get some rest. I’m sure you’ve had a long day. I left a tray of food in your room so you wouldn’t go hungry.”
“I-you did?”
“Well a spy can’t really be interrogated if she dies before I find out who she works for.”
Mai gasped. Did he really think that?!!
Hideyoshi’s laughter made her turn an even brighter red than before and she wanted to scamper off to her room to hide. Instead she braced herself and bowed to him again.
“You have been especially patient and accommodating Lord Hideyoshi. I am so sorry to be such a burden. If there is any way I can ever thank you—”
She broke off when Hideyoshi used his fingers to tip her chin upward prompting her to stand up straight.
“I appreciate the gratitude Mai, but there’s no need to bow to me. I’m happy to do it and I’d be happy just to hear you say thank you.”
She looked up into his handsome face and her heart seemed to be climbing up her throat making it difficult to speak. Seriously she’d been around way too many attractive warlords lately.
They did go into battle sometimes right? Shouldn’t they come home a little marred afterward or at least significantly less perfect? She thought of Lord Masamune’s eyepatch and the hallway immediately felt warmer. Okay even if Hideyoshi and the others lost a finger or an ear or something they’d still probably be outstandingly hot. It was a lost cause to wish that her heart could spend a few peaceful moments in the Sengoku Era not overacting to one handsome man or another.
“Thank you Lord Hideyoshi.” She said.
He smiled and she was once again reminded of why he was possibly the most eligible bachelor in Azuchi.
“You’re very welcome Mai. Here is the parcel with Lord Nobunaga’s coat. Just get it back to me when you’re finished ok?”
“Okay.”
“Goodnight!”
“Goodnight, Lord Hideyoshi.”
Mai watched him disappear down the hallway before heading for her room. Inside she found the food he had left for her and scarfed it down hungrily. She then opened the parcel that held Lord Nobunaga’s Haori to inspect what needed repaired.
She knew Hideyoshi meant what he said about her gratitude. For him a simple thank you was sufficient.
Yet she couldn’t help feeling like she somehow still wanted to show him she was grateful. So instead of going to bed she lit some extra candles and began to work on repairing the coat.
As she did Kenshin’s words from that afternoon came back to her.
"Don't cut yourself. The edges will be sharp."
She paused mid-stitch realizing how kind he had actually been to her. He had helped her pick up the pieces of the shattered bowl. Commanded Sasuke to check her arm—
Yet before all that he had saved her life.
Kenshin Uesugi had saved her.
What would have happened with those two ronin if he hadn’t intervened? She might have escaped, yes, but Kenshin had stopped them. She had only had the power to intervene. He had the power to change what was happening and chose too.
“I didn’t thank him. I didn’t even think…”
The realization stung and she was suddenly so angry with herself.
She continued sewing trying to come up with some way to express her gratitude to Kenshin for saving her. He didn’t like women so asking him to a tea house like she had Yuki would likely be more torturous than—
Yuki!! She was supposed to see Yuki tomorrow!!
Mai was suddenly very excited.
She could ask Yuki what she could do to thank lord Kenshin for saving her! Of course if he didn’t have any ideas she could always have him lead her to Sasuke and her ceiling ninja would certainly have a brilliant idea!
The idea made her especially happy and she began humming unconsciously as she continued to mend Lord Nobunaga’s coat.

Mai gulped as the Ronin in front of her unsheathed his sword.
Crap.
Swords were the thing in the Sengoku weren’t they?
Not only was the man in front of her twice her size he was armed. Also she had to consider the fact that she was trying to protect the owner they had been badgering.
Even if she took one of the two ronin down there was no way the other one wouldn’t get the upper hand using his target as a hostage.
“There’s no need to hurt him.” She said thinking quickly. She calculated which objects near her could be used to knock him out quickly. The large bowl made out of thick pottery sitting on the counter seemed a good bet. If she could knock out the first guy before he could use his sword she’d only have one assailant to deal with.
“Well well… free food and a pretty lady to keep us company. This day just keeps getting better.” He leered at her.
“I think you and your friend should take your business elsewhere.” She said somehow keeping her voice steady.
“Maybe we’ll do that if there’s something in it for us. What do you say pretty lady? Would you join us for a drink 'elsewhere'?”
He moved in closer backing her up against the counter and getting into her personal space. Damn, this dude needed a bath and a breathe mint. She waited until he moved his hand away from his sword to reach for her. Then she hit him hard over the head with the bowl. The blow was hard enough to shatter it. The
Ronin slumped to the ground unconscious. His companion cursed and rushed towards her leaving the injured owner to tumble to the ground.
She ducked around the counter to evade her new pursuer and nearly reached the exit before he grabbed her. He twisted her arm and she yelped in pain before delivering a knee to the groin making him double over in pain. She was about to rush from the shop-barely able to be relieved he hadn’t drawn his sword-when the sound of one being unsheathed behind her caught her attention.
“Who dares to disturb my drink?” The voice made a chill run down her back. She turned to meet the gaze of a man too beautiful to be real.Â
Even more frightening than the sword in his hand was the cold look in his eyes. They seemed empty of all emotion. Frozen in time like some kind of ice demon risen from the snow to punish those who disturbed him.
His face was completely symetrical and could have been made of porcelain it was so flawless. His monocromatic eyes held her captive for a moment before she was yanked backwards roughly by the collar.
The ronin she had kicked was flushed red in anger. The pain that shot up her arm was likely to be only the first consequence of that. “So you woke up ready for trouble? You’ll regret-“
“Release the woman.”
A sword was suddenly at the man’s throat. It was so close that Mai flinched backwards grabbing the wall for support. The man-or ice demon or whatever he was-advanced on her assailant moving between the two of them.
“You find pleasure in the pain of others? Perhaps you should discover what it is like to truly suffer pain yourself.”
“She was the one kicking people!” The man stuttered.
“Striking a man without cause is far worse than a woman fighting off the attention of a fiend like yourself. I suggest you settle your debt and leave before I decide to make that your last meal."
The man scrambled for his coin pouch and tossed it to the owner on the ground. "Fine, fine! Just don't do anything crazy!"
The ronin was obviously as affected by the Ice-demon's presence as she was. He hurried over to his disoriented friend who was just waking up between pottery shards. Mai took that moment to go help the injured store owner. She inspected his injuries to see how serious they were then helped him to a seat.
"I'll bring you a wet cloth for that bump on your head, or do you have some ice?"
"No it's fine miss. You are too kind to worry about me. I'm just grateful they didn't harm you as well."
The owner sighed looking a little defeated.
"I'm so sorry about your bowl. I'll pay to replace it." Mai handed him the cloth before beggining to pick up the pieces of the shattered pottery. Her arm was bothering her so she had to use her other hand to do most of the work. She was surprised when someone crouched down next to her to help.
"Don't cut yourself. The edges will be sharp." The voice of the ice-demon cautioned her.
Startled she looked up to meet the gaze of the man who saved them. Even with his sword sheathed he was intimidating. His gaze so chilling as to make her heart stop. He stared back at her cocking his head to the side his brow creasing as he gazed at her. She quickly stood moving away from him to dispose of the pieces of the bowl she’d broken.
“Your food was delicious.” She told the owner with a bow. “I’m sorry I need to get going. My employer is expecting me.” She rushed out hoping Kenshin wouldn’t follow.
Yes, that was Kenshin Ueusegi.
She was nearly back at Azuchi Castle when someone called her name. “Mai?”
“Sasuke?” She breathed a relieved sigh at realizing it was her friend and not an angry warlord.
“Hey I thought I saw you earlier. Trying to get your bearings around the market again today?" He smiled warmly. "I was actually hoping to catch you before you headed home.”
His gentle brown eyes seemed extra warm and the familiar motion of him straightening his glasses made her smile.
“Well- sort of.“ She sighed, “I just had some lunch and ran into someone unexpected. Two ronin were causing trouble for the tea shop owner and Kenshin Usegi intervened.”
“Oh! So you ran into Lord Kenshin? Uh… great. You weren’t hurt were you?” Sasuke seemed taken back by the revelation.
“One of the Ronin grabbed my arm is all. You mentioned before you saved Kenshin’s life right? Well I’m worried he recognized me from the night Honno-ji burned. I tried to get out of there fast but-“ She broke off. “Wait you’re… Lord Kenshin huh? He’s your boss now?”
“Yeah… he kind of trained me to become his ninja.”
“Which is ironic.” A voice behind her said. “He trains ninja but refuses to hide in enemy territory.”
Mai froze for a split second and then with a knee jerk reaction she stomped on the man’s solar plexus then jerked her knee upward slamming it into his stomach.
“Ouch! What the hell boar woman?!” Yuki coughed painfully.
“Oh damn! I’m sorry Yuki!! I was just attacked so I’m really jumpy.”
“Jumpy isn’t the half of it!!” Yuki groaned.
Great! Sasuke had introduced her to his BFF yesterday and today she attacks him?! Talk about failing to make a good impression!
“I’m sorry Yuki! Can you breath? Awe man! Ultimate friend fail!” She and Sasuke helped Yuki sit down while he recovered from having the breath knocked out of him.
“For a fail that was certainly impressive. Especially where you’re favoring your dominant arm. Are you sure you don’t want to train to be a ninja while we’re here?”
"Are you kidding? She’d kick her ally instead of her target!” Yuki wheezed.
“Sorry Sasuke. If anything today has convinced me to avoid ninja training.” She rubbed Yuki’s back soothingly. “Can you breathe now? Is your foot ok?”
“A woman with empathy toward her victims? She definitely wouldn’t be worth the trouble of training.” Another voice stated calmly.
Oh crap.
Mai looked up to find the unfriendly ice demon visage of Kenshin Usegi peering down at her.
“Sasuke. Please explain why this woman is in Azuchi after you helped her the night of Honno-ji.” Kenshin said with an edge of malice.

INTRODUCTION:
You couldn’t help sighing as once again war council finished and you felt you had nothing to contribute.
Why did Nobunaga even ask you to be here? As Chatelaine you were supposed to assist the residents of Azuchi Castle as best you could. Yet outside of delivering the mail you sometimes felt completely
useless.
Sure, Mitsunari was helping you with your reading and you were attempting to write in a manner closer to “Sengoku Style.” Still, that was taking much longer than you had hoped and most of your efforts to make notes of what happened in war council were still more humorous than helpful.
Masamune and Mitsuhide had nearly laughed their heads off the last time they snatched your proffered notes out of Ranmaru’s hands before he could make suggestions. Nobunaga’s page had been quite speechless when he thought it was a shopping list not “The council minutes” from the meeting you’d just been in.
With the discouragement weighing you down you gathered your things and headed for the door—not expecting a certain someone to intervene.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
(Continue with Nobunaga)
(Continue with Sasuke)
Masamune:
“Now, lass. What exactly would have you looking so down after war council?”
You blush as you realize Masamune is just outside the doors of the main hall watching you like a tiger stalking its prey.
“It’s nothing. I just have a lot of work to do so—”
You attempt to turn and walk away but the warmth of his hand wrapping firmly around yours stops you.
“Now, kitten, unless you want me to chase you down and tackle you I suggest you smooth down your fur and tell me what’s wrong.” He teased.
For a moment can’t help thinking of the time he had done exactly that. Chasing you around Azuchi castle like the two of you were playing some overzealous game of tag.
He had-in fact-caught you and you’d never been so happy to be captured.
As tempting as playing tag with Masamune was, you were quite aware of the load of work which had just been placed on his shoulders.
He had so much to do and yet he was taking time to worry about you.
“Could we maybe take a short walk in the garden?” You ask hesitantly. “I know you have a lot going on but…”
That heart-thieving smile of his brightened. “Trying to get some time alone with me now are you, kitten?”
His teasing made you blush but you did your best to “play it cool” the way Masamune always seemed to.
“Can you blame me?” You teased back.
For just a moment Masamune looked startled. Then he laughed and the extra twinkle in his beautiful blue eye made your breath catch.
“Come on then kitten before Hideyoshi catches us and nags me about getting to work.”
Only a few minutes later you were enjoying the unique flora and fauna of the gardens as you explained your difficulties to Masamune. It was easier to admit in a private setting with the man you cared more about than anyone else here in Azuchi.
Masamune was an extravagant tease yet when the two of you were alone it often surprised you how good at listening he could be. He gently asked a few questions about how the reading lessons were
going with Mitsunari. Then he inquired if Ranmaru found your latest notes more legible than the previous ones.
You had slugged him in the arm after that comment and that quickly escalated into Masamune tackling you softly to the ground and tickling you until you were breathless.
When he leaned down to steal a kiss, however, the playful feeling between you was quickly replaced by the burning desire you always felt when he was this close.
“Masamune?” You say softly.
“How is it you get more beautiful every time you laugh? Then even more beautiful when you look at me like this?” He asked the heat in his gaze making your love for him burn hot in your chest.
“Look at you like what?” You ask softly.
“You are looking at me as if your heart might break if I don’t make love to your right here and now.” He said.
“Masamune!” You gasp trying to push him away and make your escape.
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry! You’re just so cute when you’re mad too.” He laughed keeping you pinned gently beneath him. “What was the word you used that one time? Projecting? Yes, I may have been projecting
my own feeling onto you just now.”
He leaned down and kissed your forehead tenderly. “Listen, I have to ask you because I wasn’t there. When Nobunaga gave you your duties as Chatelaine did he ever ask you to pick up all of Ranmaru’s
duties as a page too?”
“No. Why would he?”
“Because it seems like you’re forgetting what your job is kitten.”
“Well, I know I’m not his page it’s just—”
“That’s right. You’re Azuchi’s Chatelaine. Which means you need to know what’s going on. Writing out reports is Ranmaru’s job. Ieyasu and I and the others are supposed to discuss strategies and share
information when we can. We don’t expect you to do our jobs, Kitten.” He smiled down at you and it was almost impossible not to smile back.
“Thank you Masamune.” You reply gratefully. He responds by leaning down to steal a surprisingly passionate kiss.
“Does this mean we can sneak off to your room before I have to get back to work?”
“Masamune!” You push his chest and this time he lets you push him away laughing playfully. You pretend to dust yourself off and head toward the castle without him. He catches up quickly enough,
however, snatching up your hand and melting any annoyance you might feel with that smile of his.
“I love you, kitten.” He says softly just as you reach the doors.
“I love you too. Masamune.” You reply even as you release his hand to head in separate directions while leaving your heart firmly in his grasp.

Nobunaga:
“And where exactly do you think you are going?” A deep voice called to you from the dais.
You almost jumped when you realized Nobunaga had been observing your slumped over walk of shame.
Great, now he was going to tease you. You sighed and then attempted to square your shoulders before turning to face him.
“Yes, Lord Nobunaga? Did you need something?” You ask in your polite-chatelain-voice which you perfected for the times Hideyoshi was around during the first few weeks you were in Azuchi.
“Yes, please come closer. I prefer not to call to you across the room when we are the only two present.”
“Of course, my lord.” You approach hoping your lover won’t see through the effort you were trying to put into acting normally.
“You seemed very attentive during war council. Did you have any questions about what was discussed?” He asked as you walked up to the dias.
“Not really.” You replied attempting to sit on the floor near him but his hand darted out to catch your wrist.
“You are still too far away my little fireball. Come closer.” Without waiting for a reply he pulled you much closer. In fact, you barely had a chance to blink and you were on his lap.
“L-lord Nobunaga?”
“Shhh it is just us little one.” He said dropping his devil-my-care expression and instead donning one of his real smiles. “Were you cooking this morning? You smell particularly sweet.”
“N-no! Hideyoshi just let me have tea after I dropped off his mail this morning. It wasn’t anything special though.”
“Hmmm… you had tea with Hideyoshi yet you did not have time to spend with me this morning?” His eyebrows dipped in a pout that summoned a smile to your lips.
“I thought you had a lot happening this morning before war council. I’m sorry I would have come if I’d known you wanted me.”
Suddenly his lips were close enough to your ear to tickle the sensitive skin along your neck.
“Haven’t you learned your lesson yet? I always want you (YN).”
You gulped as a fierce blush suddenly burned across your cheeks.
“Nobunaga!” You hissed pulling back so you weren’t quite so intimately close. What if someone just walked in to the main hall? This wasn’t exactly a private room!
“Very well. We will leave that discussion for later. Instead I want you to tell me why you seemed so solemn today?”
“Solemn?”
“During war council it appeared you were trying to summon your own private rain storm.” A mischievous smile played on those sultry lips and for a moment it was hard to focus on what he was saying.
Maybe the two of you had been apart too much this week?
“I-I was just feeling… a little useless.” You admitted hesitantly.
“Useless?” Genuine surprise flickered in his beautiful eyes.
“I’m not very good at taking notes during war council and I certainly don’t contribute much. Sometimes I find myself wondering why you even have me come to them.” You admitted dropping your gaze from
his.
His long elegant fingers cradled your chin tipping your face upward so you were once again meeting his gaze.
“Does every soldier have a purpose Mai?” He asked gently.
“I don’t know. I guess so.”
“What if each soldier tried to take command of an army. What might happen then?” He releases his hold on your chin only to trace a warm path with his fingers across your cheek and down your throat.
“Well, I’m certain that would be a bit confusing.” You admit hesitantly.
“Do you feel it is important for my soldiers to follow a commander then?” He began fingering the seam of your kimono which ran along your shoulder as though he were inspecting it’s quality.
“Yes.”
“And if each commander understands what I—their leader—intend to do during a battle. Do you feel it may be more likely that our army will work together for our success?” His eyes once again lifted and
focused on yours making your heart pound a little faster.
“Yes, it would be much more likely.”
He smiled wrapping his arms around your waist and drawing you closer to him. Soon you are nose to nose and his gentle expression makes you want to melt into him and forget where you are or why you
are talking about this.
“Do you see then, why I might want you to be here for war council?” He asked gently. “It certainly isn’t to take notes—that is Ranmaru’s job as my page. So why would I want you here? You who are both my
lover and the Chatelaine of this castle. Why would I want you here.”
“So, I… understand what you are doing? And maybe what you might need from me?”
“Very good. It seems you’ve rediscovered my favorite expression.”
“What expression is that?”
He touched a gentle kiss to your lips the warmth of it spreading from your mouth down to your heart which ached to stay here in his arms forever.
“Your smile, my love. You see I find it irresistible. To have it missing from these beautiful lips was quite distracting.”
“I’ll be more careful about bringing it with me to the next war council.” You laugh softly. “I love you Nobunaga. Thank you for helping me find it.”
“I think in return you might owe me a reward for my services.” The mischief in his eyes made your heart shudder with excitement.
“Isn’t it you who are usually giving out the rewards?” You tease.
“Usually. Do you object to my claiming one for myself?”
“No. What reward do you want then?”
“Tea in your room. Hideyoshi should not be the one to have the pleasure of your company for such things. For you are and always will be mine and mine alone.”
“That sounds completely reasonable then.” You laugh just as he claims another kiss. This one much longer and deeper.
