In a Sunday matchup between the New York Islanders and Colorado Avalanche, jam-packed with storylines, Jonathan Drouin’s return to Colorado is perhaps the most fascinating. Not because he spent his entire career with the Avs, but because the fit was exactly what the Avs needed for two years. And more notably, he didn’t want to leave. “He (MacKinnon) brought me here. One of the main reasons why I came here was him. It felt it was a very close group over there, kind of sucked to leave, but some of those things happen,” Drouin said.
“It sucked. Sometimes you gotta make decisions for your family or other reasons,” Drouin said following morning skate about having to depart via free agency. “I enjoyed my time in Colorado. I would’ve loved to stay here for the rest of my career, but the business side doesn’t allow it sometimes.” “But again, you look at your options, you look at different things, and you got to make decisions sometimes for yourself a little bit more, and for my family as well …,” Drouin said. “Those decisions are not easy. They’re not fun talks with teammates and telling them you’re going to be leaving, but it’s part of the business we’re in and it’s part of the game we’re playing.”
The Avalanche’s front office and Drouin had conversations leading up to July 1 about trying to find a way to keep him here. But it wasn’t a fit. Drouin likely wanted to get paid as a top-six forward, but the Avs didn’t have a spot for him with Gabe Landeskog’s return a sudden reality. Had he stayed, Drouin likely would’ve slotted into the Victor Olofsson role as a depth two-way scorer who can pitch in on the power play. But there was no way the Avs could’ve paid him the two years, $8 million he got from the Islanders to play in that spot. His two-way play added to his value. “Soon after joining us, he really dug in on the defensive side of things, and was a highly regarded defensive player for us, too,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said. “You have to be in this league if you’re going to play top line minutes with top guys. You’re going to face a lot of other top lines. So you have to round out your game and become a better defensive player. And he did that and earned a lot of trust with me.”

truly truly truly insane one where murph’s condition is dicky’s contract and dicky doesn’t know about it.
i said i would say more. i've always thought that murph must feel absolutely blindingly guilty about breaking dicky's ankle in sj and i think that is only made worse by the fact that both of them were (WERE!!! ok sorry. i'm still floored) rentals/pending ufas. it's such a risky place to be in when you're playing for your contract and you get injured like you're not proving yourself in the way you want to be, and murph wants to stay and wants to stay with dicky (because lightning doesn't strike twice and what are the chances that they could go to the same team again) and they've talked about it, too. he knows that dicky also loves it in edm and they've always wanted to win together, that's what they talked about in chicago when they were a's and that hasn't changed now. and i think it would be really easy for him to start thinking that maybe he's ruined dicky's chances of getting a new contract because he was out for so long (every game is an eternity down the stretch, right?) and couldn't play to his best strengths in playoffs, and as everything starts spiralling out of control he just thinks to himself i have to keep him. so especially with the nurse trade looming murph knows that he has quite a bit of leverage and so he makes it a condition of his signing that dicky also gets offered a contract. he won't fight (too hard) about term/aav/whatever as long as dicky gets to stay too but if they don't re-sign him then murph walks.
i said originally that dicky doesn't know about it and there's an interesting universe where that's true - he knows that there was some sort of condition in murph's negotiation but he doesn't know, precisely, what it was, and murph doesn't tell him, not directly. he doesn't want him to know just how much he needs him, and it's a little too desperate for just bros if he admits that i wouldn't stay unless you could stay too, and it's a little weird and tamper-y that he's even thinking about threatening this and by the time he's deep enough for there to be something to tell it's too deep to admit, and dicky can't know any of this about him at all costs. and of course they say they were planning to sign him all along but it's never quite clear to anyone how true that is. it's never quite clear how much of it is murph's threat and how much of it is original intent and maybe he didn't need to do any of that but maybe he did. and he doesn't want dicky to have to worry about any of that - whether his worth/usefulness to the team depends on murph at all or that he's beholden to murph in any way so he just. doesn't tell him. i think that is fun.
however. with today's developments i think there is SUCH a fun weird intense codependent universe where they collude on this. murph hears a rumour that dicky's negotiations are stalling out and freaks the fuck out and grabs dicky by the metaphorical hand and says we lucked out once but we won't luck out again please if i'm going to try to win it i need to win it with you please and dicky says thank god me too and i said i felt better about this because you were here first and i meant that. and it's like three in the morning and they're pacing around together and drinking on murph's balcony in chicago and they put together this insane plan where murph threatens to walk if dicky doesn't get offered something and then dicky puts the nmcs and mtcs in his contract and then murph matches them in his own once they know that dicky's contract has gone through. and they're careful to keep it reasonable, term and aav on the lower end, 16 team mtc instead of 10 or 5, because they know they're worth a lot but they're not essential but they're not making this a deal that's easy to walk away from. we'll offer some other team this package deal if you don't take it but make no mistake. we are a package deal and you are going to like it.

re: my current wip - it will always be the summer (isaac goes to McDrai Training Camp[tm])
so. i decided to create my own layout for a McDrai Training Camp lot of land and i have drawn it out below. please ignore the sizing of everything, i wasn't going to get too into details like that
first off we have the layout of the 'campgrounds'. they're hidden somewhere in a foresty area of toronto. let it be known i don't know anything about toronto and i looked at google maps. this is like. nearish the zoo idk
now we have the layout of the main house. first pic is the main floor, second is the 2nd story
then we have the guest house, which is a square shaped house
and finally, my floor plan of their very own personal ice rink. they're rich so i think it's fine and normal that they have a personal one. if you disagree please don't tell me
no i do not take constructive criticism thank you
