When does this event take place?

NateJo Week runs from Sept 1, 2026 (Nate’s birthday!) to Sept 7, 2026.

How does this work?

A pair of prompts is chosen every day. Feel free to pick and choose, combine, or go with an alternate prompt. You can participate all seven days or just on the days you feel like it.

How can I participate?

Prompts

You can participate by creating whatever you’re inspired to based on the prompts: fanart, fanfic, poetry, crafts, moodboards, ship playlists, or headcanon posts. The only stipulation is the work should primarily focus on Nate and Jo. (And archive lock your fics if you post on AO3!) Otherwise, there are no restrictions.

Post to the AO3 collection NateJoWeek2026, which will open at the beginning of NateJo Week, or use the Tumblr Tag #NateJoWeek2026 so we can reblog and see your work!

Daily Challenges

You can also participate by doing the daily challenges (which have prizes!) More specific info on them + specific prizes coming in a separate post. Daily challenge entries must be during NateJo week to be considered for a prize.

What if I want to make work for a threesome or moresome pairing including Nate and Jo, like SidNateJo or MikkoNateJo?

That’s totally fine + welcomed in this event! The only thing we ask you to avoid is fics that are not in the spirit of the event, such as fics with an explicitly unhappy ending for NateJo in favor of another endgame pairing.

What HRPF pairings can I request if I win a prize from completing a daily challenge?

Players accused of a credible crime can’t be requested. Further, each author/artist can have their own lines about what they’re willing to make.

anyways. my final thoughts on the ai thing is that if you've used ai for fanfic writing, you can just stop. if youre genuinely just someone who's using it as a tool bc youve gotten used to it, its not too late to stop. I guarantee you that your writing will be better and all AI is teaching you is now how to write like AI. u need to learn how to write like u. and if you look, you Can find people in fandom to help you. theres someone who can help you proofread your fic, or tinker with your sentences. someone to help you with code. someone to help u find the answers to all your hockey questions. and itll be more fun this way

so here are my takes

I think there is a broad cultural problem with the current state of fanfiction that likely stems from the proliferation of fics-turned-published-novels wherein fic authors now feel they have a duty to churn out a high volume of content at an inhuman rate. and in order to meet those demands, they resort to AI. and that sucks.

I think readers and consumers of fanfiction broadly speaking also have a bad habit of feeding into this culture by demanding and expecting a high volume of content churned out at an inhuman rate, and it often prevents them from accurately assessing the quality of what they're reading, leading to a general degeneration of fic quality, feeding an audience that is getting worse at recognizing good art vs. bad art. and that sucks.

going from 1,800 fics to over 38,000 fics for a single ship in less than six months is not normal and should have been a warning sign for people that there was likely a fuckton of slop being produced and posted. and that sucks.

I don't like the excuse that some authors are using that they only used AI to beta their work. there are plenty of humans who would happily beta your fic for you. and if your reasoning for not using a human is because you wanted your work beta'd faster, I would implore you to examine WHY you feel like you are on some kind of binding schedule in a hobby space. kill the profit-driven manager in your brain and take your time making shit.

generally speaking, I believe this is a problem that is driven by both readers and writers but at the end of the day, the real driver - as ever - is capital, and its influence on art and creativity. I don't blame authors or readers for falling victim to this because the world around us sucks, but my god we all need to at least try a little harder to resist.

if you're a reader, be critical of what you're seeing and consuming. and if you're a writer, stop giving away any piece of the creative process to AI. silence the part of you that insists you must post as much as possible all the time. you do not have to capitulate to hustle culture and also your fanfiction will probably not actually make you rich and famous, even if all those comments and kudos are making you feel important.

ultimately we have got to get back to writing and reading fanfic for the love of the game. also I don't think the callout posts about authors using AI are helpful either btw like I think the best choice if you're reading a fic that you suspect might be AI is to simply not read or engage with it. and then go read and engage with something made by a human.

i have seen some people call laila edwards willmacks handler and i think that people need to know the implications of such words.

it is unsavory to imply that a black woman would be overseeing/taking care of white men, this falls into the mammy-ification of her.

you may think that it isn’t that serious, but it truly is. there have been years of cinema and literature that paints black people in a certain way that is still being undone to this day. a mammy is often a big boned black woman who is a “nanny” who takes care of a white family (and their kids) and lives with them. this is a racist caricature stemming from the jim crow era.

for the longest time black women were only seen as mammy’s, and in Hollywood the first black woman to win an oscar, Hattie McDaniel, was for the role of a mammy in Gone with the Wind. at the end of the film they told her she was free to go wherever and they had her beg to stay and take care of the white children so that they wouldn’t be apart. this film came out in 1940.

this is a role and societal stereotype that is still simmering beneath the surface of interactions and prejudice. i know laila made a joke abt living with willmack, and people would love to see their favs interact, but i need you all to choose your diction with care. realize the implications of calling a black woman a handler in relation to white man, and even out of the racial standpoint why implicate a woman having to keep the reigns in check on men?

there is a lot wrong with the statements made in regards to laila and people should know. and i am not making this “too deep” because i know firsthand the experience of being black in a white favored society.

i also need people to abandon the idea that racism is just slurs. if it were just slurs, then the jim crow era would not be seen as racism. you don’t know, but you should take your time to know
