Abbas

Imam Husain (A) was born on 3rd Sha’baan 4 AH. His brother, Abbas, was born in the same month, 22 years later. Not before him, but the day after: 4th Sha’baan.

Imam Husain (A) was brutally killed on 10th Muharram  61 AH. His brother, Abbas was murdered the same day, Not after him, but before — sacrificing his life to protect him.

Abbas, born after his brother. Abbas, dying before his brother. So there was never a moment he existed in this world when Husain did not. (as if this world did not exist for him if Husain did not.)

The first face when Abbas opened his eyes… And the last face before he closed his eyes forever.

One of my favorite things is seeing my duas for my friends/family manifest themselves. May Allah make us of those who are selfless with our prayers always and remember those who have made an impact on us.

The month of Ramadhan has not even come to an end yet, and instead of dwelling upon how we can maintain the religious fervor of this month, we’re planning our descent back into haram.

The day after Laylatul Qadr is always so depressing.

The Masjid is empty. The Angels are packing up, getting ready to leave. The regret sets in that you haven’t achieved quite as much as you had hoped in this month. The realization occurs that you only have a few days left to take advantage of this divine banquet before it vanishes for another year (if you even live to next year).

You see some people who are so perfect in eloquence that they don’t err in the use of a single letter, while their hearts are darker than a gloomy night, and there are some people who cannot express what is in their hearts, yet their hearts are radiant like a lamp.

When I was studying in Najaf, I used to earn my living by receiving a monthly wage from Tabriz. Once, as a result of a conflict between the two countries [Iran and Iraq], my monthly salary was stopped and my savings were dwindling. One day I was sitting at the table studying when suddenly my train of thought was disrupted by the worry that until when will the strained relations between Iraq and Iran continue as we don’t have any money, and we are strangers in this land. As soon as this though entered my mind I realized that someone was knocking loudly on the door. I went and opened the door and saw that there was a man at the door. He was tall, his beard was dyed with henna, his turban (amama) was tied in a special manner on his head, and he was wearing a distinctive outfit. As soon as the door opened he said, “Salamun Alaykum”. I replied his salam, and he said, “I am Shah Husayn Wali! God says [to you] “in these 18 years when have I ever let you go hungry that you have now abandoned your studies and fallen into the thought that until when will the relations between Iraq and Iran remained strained and when will they send us money!” Farewell to you!” I also bid him farewell and closed the door. I sat at the table. At that time I lifted my head from my hands, and then a number of questions arose for me – that did I actually walk to the door, or did I witness this scholar sitting here with my head in my hands?! Had I been asleep or awake?! Had the man called himself Shaykh Husayn Wali or Shah Husayn Wali. His appearance was not appropriate with the title Shah, nor was I sure that he was a Shaykh! Some time passed and these questions remained unanswered, until a letter arrived from Tabriz that I should go there. In the morning, according to my regular schedule, I went to Najaf’s Wadius Salam [graveyard] between dawn and sunrise, and walked between the graves reciting Sura Fatiha. Suddenly I saw a grave that was obviously an important one. I read the gravestone and saw that after many inscriptions in praise of the deceased it was written: the late Shah Husayn Wali! I realized that it was the same individual that had visited my home in Najaf. I looked at the date of his death and saw that it was nearly 300 years earlier. I was surprised at his sentence “in 18 years when have we ever let you go hungry”, because I had spent 9 years in Najaf, and I was 35 years old. So why 18 years?! After some thought I understood that it was exactly 18 years that I had put on the turban (amama) and the clothes of a soldier of Imam Zaman (aj)!”

I spent my days under the slavery of Amir'ul-Mu'minin (a.s) in such a way that he used to feed me first then eat himself. First he clothed me then he wore himself. One day the Imam purchased two shirts. He saw that the shirt of Salman Farsi was patched at many places. So he gave one shirt to him and told me to put on the second. I said that the Imam’s shirt was also quite worn out, but he said, “You wear it. I will buy another one for myself when it is possible.” He never awoke me for some errand and never made me work when I was sick. He never gave me tasks beyond my strength or capacity. The Imam tried to free me many times but I implored and pleaded the Imam not to do so.

Night 12

“Not even Water?” they ask

No, But my dear

the remembrance of my Lord,

“Verily, Fridays enjoy rights (incumbent upon people). Therefore, beware of violating Fridays’ sanctity through showing shortcoming in acts of worship; rather, seek nearness to Almighty Allah by means of righteous deeds and abandonment of all forbidden acts. Certainly, on Fridays, Almighty Allah doubles up the rewards (of good deeds), erases forgivingly punishments (for evildoings), and raises the ranks (of faith). Friday daytimes are as same as Friday nights; therefore, you may, when possible, stay up supplicating and offering prayers to Almighty Allah Who, at that night, orders the angels to descend to the lower sky in order to double up the rewards and erase the evildoings. Most surely, Allah is Ample-giving and All-generous.

The most important thing of this month is the Night of Power (Lailatul-Qadr) - the night which is superior, than a thousand months, one thousand months jihad, one thousand months reign, and the worship in it is superior than one thousand months of worship, (as has been narrated in the traditions). Yes! the Night of Power is a very precious and distinguished night, in accordance with the Qur'anic interpretation it is a very auspicious night; and as could be derived from the traditions, in this night the sustenance and age of servants, and the good and evil of their affairs are destined; the Holy Qur'an was descended in this night; also the angels are descended all over the earth, and when they pass through the gathering of believers, send salutations and praises upon them, and consider their prayers until the dawn.It has been narrated that during this night the prayers of all are accepted, and the prayer of no one remains unanswered except the following: •The one who has displeased and angered his parent and was declared disinherited or rebellious by them. •The one who has cut off his relationship with his kith and kin. •The one who possesses animosity and vengeance of a believer in his heart. •The one who consumes alcoholic drinks.

If one spends all of Laylatul Qadr's night in prayer and dua but the next day when they see people in the streets, they think to themself: 'Last night we were praying, but how about these people?! How unaware and wretched they are!' Meaning they see themself better than others...this is poison to a human's spiritual elevation.
