middle school hazayuka designs...! finally after... a few weeks... i'm finally posting again because at last i had at least one idea for a drawing. is art block finally over? no
anyways i thought that would be funny to draw. i don't know if i already mentioned this but Shakuyaku only moved to Morioh in 1996, when she entered high school, meaning she didn't even know about Hazamada's existence before this yesr. so this middle school design was literally made more just for funsies and also to imagine how her and Hazamada would look like.
though those two would've been x100 happier if they had met each other earlier oh my god..
both pictures are practically the same except the left one has some design notes. also being honest i had no idea what to do for Hazamada's uniform. Shakuyaku on the other hand. i went a bit crazy i loved that.

How Joshu's design is a perfect reflection of his dichotomic expression: a semiotic analysis.
One of the things I love about Joshu is how he is deeply cohesive in his contradictions. Again: I don't think everyone should like him (the fandom would be way less funny if you all did, for sure) but my goal is always to open the haters' eyes to how well-written/designed he is. Araki is a very bold and talented artist and he knows what he is doing. Since I had never seen someone analyze how Joshu's design is deeply attached to his persona, I thought I may as well do it myself.
๐ฑ MOHAWK-BOWLCUT ๐ซ Starting with the character's signature, of course: his ridiculous hair. While bowl cuts are usually associated with childhood, goofiness and nerdiness, mohawks are the signature of the punk movement, known for confronting mainstream, taking a lot of attention and bringing a statement to non-conformity. So why not a mix of both these styles, and make it a NATURAL, meaning the character was born that way? Super telling, interesting and fitting with Joshu. Yet controversial and universally (almost, because I love it) hated, Joshu's hair is undeniably his own perfect summary, illustrating the rebellion and the vulnerability living together as a twisted and mostly nonfunctional piece.
๐ฑ TOP-HALF ๐ซ Similar to Diamond is Unbreakable, JoJolion's designs are not the craziest in Jojo. Both Joshu and Yasuho, though weird, wear pieces that can mostly be seen in real teenagers or, at least, "costumey" versions of what you would expect them to dress, plus a quite modern and fashionable touch. Josuke's is just an almost regular sailor outfit; Daiya's cute, fluffy outfit isn't at all regular in day-to-day situations, but it's not something absurd to see worn on a teenager who is into kawaii stuff. Joshu's high collar shirt with the bow tie and a queue of side-placed angular, well-defined square shapes that resemble suspenders is such a classical, well-known nerd/geek stereotype, it's not even funny. It is tighter than the average nerd shirt, but still very cartoonishly alike.
But on the side of his sleeves, there's a unique detail: metal pieces that "cut" the shoulder line, as if the sleeves - if not, everything - in his shirt can be detached and attached again, which is super fitting considering Nut King Call's powers.
๐ฑ BOTTOM-HALF ๐ซ Depending on the design version, Joshu's pants details can look pointed (manga, mainly) or torn (game); either way, both styles allude to punk, emo or even gothic, and this contrast between the top/ bottom part visually mirrors his internal contradictions well. His square belt is also relatively brusque, as are the rest of his accessories.
๐ฑ SHOES ๐ซ While Josuke and Yasuho wear sneakers, Joshu's shoes seem to be "too formal" for his age/personality, giving the rich kid "I don't leave my house that much" appeal. They pretty much look like social shoes, neater and something you'd expect Smartschoolboy9 would use to prove that he is indeed a good boy. And the blucke is big, just like his belt and bracelets.
Notheless, the shoes are also sharp and not that far from looking like goth pikes boots.
๐ฑ BRACELETS ๐ซ Joshu's bracelets' format is very similar to the thicker bracelets/wristbands that punks use. They may not have studs or spikes, but they definitely bring a more crude and even aggressive appearance to his look, in comparison to more delicate ones.
๐ฑ FACIAL TRAITS ๐ซ Late JoJolion had same face syndrome, yes, but Joshu's face is SO different in the beginning of the part and in Eyes of Heaven, it is facinating.
He has very distinguished features: his eyes are downturned, his nose is quite pointed and upturned, and his lips are bigger and rounder than most other characters. His brows give the impression that he is always furrowing them to understand something; that disgusted expression that kind of gives Okuyasu in the beginning of DIU; the idiotic, over-sensitive tough guy. So, again, it is a curious mix of looking stupid/inoffensive and trying to look "rough". In comparison to Josuke's, his features seem less harmonious, less manly, and more comically proportionate, featuring striking traits that facilitate his role as the comic relief and add drama to the expression of his strong emotions (screaming, being loud in general...).
(Please ignore Josuke's weird lashes in the photo; this was the only MMD model I found and It is based on EOH character models).
๐ฑVOICE ๐ซ Let's be real: Joshu's voice needs to be talked about more. I'm a sucker for his dub in both official games and have been ever since hoping they bring Hiroaki Miura back for JoJolion's animation. He did such a good job bringing Joshu's comic side while still sounding realistically dumb... because Joshu does not have a deep, emotionless voice like Jotaro or an imposing, villainous, seductive voice like Dio's; his voice is deep, but overly expressive, drawled and shaky, as if his mannerisms and his mental development were more juvenile than his physical/corporeal self. AND when he laughs, it sounds like both a prick's kid annoying smirk and an unrequited moan. IT! IS! PERFECT! FOR! HIM!
CONCLUSION...
ย Everything in Joshu's design leads you to read him as a spoiled rich kid simulating countercultural elements through fundamental geometric shapes the most infantile attempts. He has a rebellious, "street kid" side that, even if emotionally justified by his neglected childhood, isn't externalized organically because he isn't self-aware enough to understand and control his internal world. He has antagonistic behaviors not because he's a countercultural young man consciously involved in protesting against society and its problems, but because he can't manage himself - and he IS part of the very society that punks opposed: a society that raises emotionally immature, luxury-driven, spoiled people with way too many resources in their hands.
Joshu is that spoiled society that is too comfortable to change and use their full potential.
That being said, I fucking love this guy, and I hope my analysis made sense! ^^
Hi, to a joshu fan to another. Do you think joshu is autistic or on the spectrum. I know that's not a reson for what he did to yasuho.
Hi, fellow Joshu (and Valentine) fan!! Hope you're doing well!
I really hope you don't mind me using your ask to do a full analysis on Joshu's possible conditions, because I was already planning to do so, and you gave me the perfect opportunity and encouragement to go for it! So here we go...
Answering your question: YES, I love the possibility of Joshu being on the spectrum! And I've read a lot of great character analysis on this subject, so I'm sure many other people also headcanon him as high-functioning (level one support) autistic too.
Actually, this is such a common perspective that I don't think there's much I could add that would be particularly productive. So instead of offering my own analysis, I'd like to link a few posts that explore Joshu's psychology in depth, covering topics like his childhood neglect and possible autism:

But I do have a quite controversial opinion about this (I'm guessing is controversial[?]); while I don'tย disregard him being autistic - one diagnosis doesn't exclude the other, of course -, I do think most of Joshu's struggles are more clearly linked to Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) rather than with ASD.
Cluster B disorders can also cause various social difficulties, some of which can overlap with autism. I believe that's what's happening in Joshu's case.
Joshuโs entire arc is probably a summary of most typical BPD symptoms: tendency toward unhealthy limerence, intense feelings of rejection and insecure attachment, impulsivity, black-and-white thinking (often categorizing things as either great or terrible), suspicion of anyone who enters his life, troublemaker behavior, and a deep dependence on external stimuli/feedback to regulate his own self-value and self-esteem.
According to the DSM-5 (and earlier versions as well), he actually fits a number of the criteria:
INCLUDING the possible environmental causes of BPD:
Examples of moments that may illustrate the nine diagnostic criteria:ย
๐ฉ 1. Thrigger by fear of abandoment.
๐ฉ 2. Unstable interpersonal relationships characterized by alterning betweens idealization and devaluation.
(That's a tricky one. His relationship with his family seems pretty stable, but he does idealize both Jobin and Yasuho in a very unhealthy way. With Josuke and other characters he's less familiar with, it seems to be more of a push-and-forth, reactive relationship with far more instability).
๐ฉ 3. Unstanble self-image or sense of self.
๐ฉ 4. Impulsivity in pottentially self-damaging areas.
I'm considering the areas that most often trigger his impulsivity to be money and sex.
๐ฉ 5. Suicidal/ self-mutilating behavior.
๐ฉ 6. Affective instability due to a marked reactivity of mood.
๐ฉ 7. Chronic feelings of emptiness.
Wellโฆ I couldn't think of any particular moment where Joshu explicitly says he feels some emptiness inside, but I believe that his obvious depression and signs of not fitting in are enough to assume that he chronically needs something he's incapable of fulfilling on his own, so it's at least suggested (?).
๐ฉ 8. Innaproprieate, intense anger.
๐ฉ 9. Stress-related paranoid ideation/ dissociative symptoms.
ย He's stress-related paranoid FOR SURE, but I can't recall any moment that indicates dissociation or derealization that wasn't caused by extremely specific and temporary situations (such as him being attacked by WoU, maybe [?]). So I'm not adding anything to that factor.
So...
To evaluate how these two conditions might overlap, I've also quickly marked whatย >> I << consider to be more visible in the character.
Again, this is my personal opinion and I'm not a professional. I truly respect everyone's view on this character, as well as acknowledge the right of any neurodivergent person to relate to and identify aspects of a character's persona that I won't be able to. Despite any attempt to apply psychological methods, this is >> for fun <<.
I'm not borderline myself, but I've had close contact with two borderline people for several years now, which is probably part of the reason I can appreciate Joshu so deeply. I feel like he resonates with the difficult symptoms of this condition... especially the struggle, the deep emotional suffering, and the misunderstanding they often go through.
I'm always open to listening to other interpretations and to correcting any offensive or misguided information provided here.
And you're right: psychological conditions aren't an excuse for everything he did wrong, but they are certainly a way to add depth to the character's interpretation and to better understand what Araki was trying to convey through him in his story.
Thanks so much for the ask!! ๐โค๏ธ I really appreciate it. ๐ฅน
