Stop the time x 3 - by Ilana Dotan

I have an exhibition at the end of 2019 if all goes well. It seems like a long time ahead to be thinking about it, but because I usually produce 1 work per month I have to be calculated. these works are planned to be part of the exhibition. They are pencil drawing sewed with surgical thread.

The pieces are all cheese wrapped in wax paper. The surgical thread supposes to imply that the paper is also a type of skin.

A close wrap is like a promise that cannot disappoint you if you don’t open it. Once it’s open changes begins to happen, and I think that most people hate changes or really afraid of them. So it’s a hard choice between a promise that won't happen unless you'll unwrap the paper and the change you’ll have to pay.

My Wax paper Project by Ilana Dotan

My wax paper project is a bit hard to explain. It began with my drawings of everyday materials and evolved into questions about time and growing old.

Wax paper is a material being used to wrap cheese. The wax paper has a quality of an old man skin. Every time we unwrap the cheese the wax paper gets more wrinkled it kind of “gets old”. You can see a “timeline” from top to bottom of the wax paper, from extra smooth to extra wrinkled. If we won’t unwrap the paper, it will stay “young”, smooth like a baby butt, like we all wish to. That is why I sewed it with surgical sewing thread and named the works “Stop the time”.

But you can not get to the cheese, to the essence of the body, to the flavours, and fat and smells, without opening the wax paper wrap and changing it.

Contemporary Vanitas?

This is part of a project I’m working on for an upcoming exhibition. It’s started with my interest in what I defined as "grey matter", the synthetic materials and objects surrounding us, all kind of industrial products, serving us daily "behind the scene".

Now I have narrowed down and I’m focusing on specific objects, In this case, trays of meat (there for “Meatless”). For me, besides the organic quality of the used objects, the fact that they all contained dead creatures turns them into little coffins... So although I’ve tried to deal with unnoticed objects in an unemotional way, I’ve found myself being linked to the historical vanitas still life paintings, dealing with questions of life and death and our limited time here.
