Raymond Reddington vs Naomi and Liz | The Blacklist 2x4, 3x11-12.
Red is trying to convince Naomi and Liz to accept his help, while threatening Frank and Tom to behave as he thinks would be the best for the women he cares about.
I read a few opinions about Red behaving OOC and scary in 3x12. Imho he didn’t change much since S2. In these situations - when he thinks he should protect somebody -, he isn’t afraid to cross any lines.
Of course, I understand that Naomi’s and Liz’s lives were/are in danger. On the other hand I can’t help but think about what kind of life Naomi has now with a cheating miserable husband she knows nothing about. Or how Liz’s life will go on from now on if for example instead of her neighbor, Baz will be the one she can talk to about her pregnancy and other personal problems. Probably this is a topic for another post, currently my point is that *for me* Reddington’s actions in 3x12 fit in the picture I have of him.
P.S.: As usual, besides being parallel, these scenes also the opposites of each other. (If phrasing it like this makes any sense.) Red’s behavior is the same in both cases, but the goal is the opposite. While he wants Frank to stay with Naomi and them to leave together, he does everything to make Tom leave alone and keep Liz around.
Great parallels and point about Red’s underlying behavior, which clearly isn’t without fault, but in light of 313, I think it just got even more understandable. He is terrified of losing those very few he loves, so this controlling behavior seems to stem from a genuine (desperate) wish to protect, not some scary/creepy urge to “own” the other person. It’s intrusive yet also necessary.
But saddling Naomi with trash like Frank still feels so “wtf Red?!” to me. I guess it has something to do with that “we can’t really bear each other’s company” remark that suggests that the hurt is mutual and not so one-sided as Naomi made it out to be, but this “she loves you, so you’ll play the role of the perfect husband for her, end of discussion” attitude still comes across as a rather weird mixture of love/care and a touch of something else. comeuppance maybe? (add to that that he gifts them the girlfriend-on-the-side’s dog even though from Lord Baltimore’s searches we know they have a subscription to Cat Fanatic, and it gets even better).
Frank is “just” a cheater, tho, so maybe Red didn’t feel the need to meddle in their relationship more than Naomi’s safety warranted (and girlfriend-on-the-side was also a safety issue). I don’t know. T/J & Liz is a different case altogether, and Red’s “meddling” is proportionally bigger. I’m sure he feels at least partially responsible for how things turned out. Once again, it was his association, no matter how distant, that put a woman’s life in even more danger. Josephine’s husband was always abusive but she received the most severe beating after he found out about Red being in the picture. Liz landing in an “arranged marriage” as per Berlin’s request must have been like being caught in a recurring nightmare, which also yanks that “you won’t marry her again” statement into a whole new context. It could also explain why Red stayed away for a long time after their wedding: it wasn’t just to gather intel on Berlin. He was also probably afraid that any direct contact without a careful plan would result in an escalation of violence he wouldn’t be able to control. It also explains why his very first move was to send Zamani after T/J with a knife and a very clear message. But he is still around. So is the Cabal and Liz is still refusing his help. So I can see why Red is so afraid and why he keeps nodding off: excessive and constant worry is the most tiring thing in the world.
^^^this all of it!! Red chose to respect Josephine’s wishes and not interfere even though he knew what was going on and it led to Josephine getting badly hurt. He will not make that mistake again. He is pushing and over stepping with Liz because he would rather have her hate him than see the same thing that happened to Josephine, happen to Liz. I am completely understand where Red is coming from he will burn down the world for her whether she accepts it or not.

I like the saying “May you live in interesting times,” because I think things are great when we accept chaos in life. That goes against my being obsessive-compulsive and ritualistic, but I don’t mind adversity. The fight is okay with me. My life is wonderful. It’s a grand time, you know?

Clerk: and the father’s name? Tom: Jacob- Liz: Tom- Tom: Well it’s actually Jacob…I mean it was Tom when I was married to her. She divorced me when she discovered I was paid to enter her life…But I mean, it’s actually Jacob, I want to be Jacob but she doesn’t seem into it – I have asked. But…she thinks she knows Tom. Tom’s my safe, kinda dorky elementary school teacher persona. Maybe we should use Tom? Clerk: ….
Tom: and just for the record, the child is totally safe under our custody. Especially mine. I mean, sure I put a gun against my wife once… well, twice, beat her, manipulated her, used her as a human shield and put her on a kill list, but you know what? That’s all in the past, because I’m a changed man. I no longer pose a threat to society. I mean, yes I did kill or threaten to kill innocent people but it was all in the name of love to exonerate my wife who is no longer my wife, but I’m hoping she’ll give me a second chance. I am a completely sane, rational human being who is perfectly capable of putting others needs, especially my child’s, before my own because I have demonstrated that I can be unselfish when it comes to the people I love.
Clerk: I’m going to call social services now….
Liz: No wait! After he did all this to me I saved his life, miraculously, but kept him chained up on a boat for a couple of weeks. I totally deserved all the lies and abuse. It’s my fault, really. He said he can change.
