How do you feel about this seasons so far?
Hi! Sorry for the delay, but I needed a little time to think about my answer because this season has definitely been quite a journey for me.
I've been following the production of S3 very closely from the beginning, so I've seen how many incredibly talented and passionate people have put everything they had into making it despite the limited time, budget, and all the bad luck they had to deal with.
That being said, I really didn't like the first three episodes.
I expected the shift in tone that came with changing the narrator, and I knew fitting TVL into 7 episodes would be a huge challenge. But what I struggled with most was how relentlessly bleak and cynical everything felt. It seemed like they'd picked out all Lestat's trauma moments and didn't have much room left for anything else. And it wasn't just Lestat, almost every other character was miserable. It was just too much for me all at once.
I know that's a bit different from what most people have been criticizing. A lot of the discussion has been about the big changes from the book, how the season tells more than it shows, how much time we spend in the present instead of Lestat's past, and how Gabriella became such a central focus at the expense of others.
And don't get me wrong, I agree with some of that too. To a degree. Most of the changes don't really bother me, but I do mourn some of the scenes we never got. I'm especially sad that ep. 6 wasn't set in NOLA. And I still hope we'll eventually get to see Gabriella who's a little closer to the one I love in the books.
None of that ended up being my biggest issue, though, and from ep 4 onwards I started enjoying the season more and more. The tone shifted, I finally got to see a different Lestat (my favorite is the one with Akasha), and everything started to feel much better balanced.
Last weekend I did a rewatch of the first few episodes with a friend, and I have to admit Rolin and everyone else were right, it works much better the second time around. Once you know where the story is going, it's easier to see what they were trying to do.
I'm really curious about ep. 7 and whether it'll fully win me over.
I'm also really happy that we're all going into the finale completely blind. AMC finally seems to have realized how much damage all the leaks and spoilers from screeners were doing. But that's probably a whole separate conversation.
So overall, I went from being pretty disappointed to pretty much liking what the season is doing. I still have some issues with a few creative choices, but overall I think it's really good. It looks gorgeous, all the performances have been incredible, and we're honestly so lucky to have this cast as well as everyone else working on it.
At this point there are really only two things that could ruin the finale for me: if Daniel is somehow (more) permanently killed, or if it turns out that past dm really was completely one sided, with Armand simply stalking Daniel for 52 years. I'd have a hard time accepting either of those.
I've already spent way too much time doomspiraling about both during the season (thankfully my dear fandom friends have always managed to talk me out of it and remind me to trust the process). I'm really hoping the finale lets me go into the hiatus excited instead of worrying about Daniel for the next couple of years.
