it's dreadfully late in the evening.

... or perhaps, it's simply too early.

your mother didn't come home last night ... probably too busy with work.

which makes it the perfect time to ask ...

you knock on your sisters door, you know she's still awake because you can ever so faintly hear the sound of her tv from outside the door.

( or maybe it's her computer ... ?? )

REGARDLESS. you know that you're not waking her up ... which is really all that matters. a gentle knock is given and you slip inside as the door is cracked open for you. fingertips twiddle together, you wear an almost sheepish expression on your features as you look towards your sister.

" i ... i know it's random but. "

c'mon noel, get it out already ... !!

" i ... wanted to try to do my makeup l -- like you ... "

maybe it's because of the strict household, or maybe it's because you've always looked up to your sister ...

... but you think her style is ... really cool.

knock, knock.

a glance at the clock on her monitor read 3:43 A.M.

dess was never one to sleep reasonably, especially when her mother would stay out. it gave her a sense of freedom to indulge in the solitude of the late night, and it was the perfect time to keep grinding away in dragon blazers 2.

with mother away, that meant the knock could only be one other person in the household, especially considering dess had kept her volume low. ( despite the rage that boiled in her with each defeat. )

hooded eyes glazing over to her door, there stands noelle, the light of her life.

quickly, a soft grin curls on her features, freckles scrunching on her cheek. dess stands, still clad in the same clothes as earlier in the day, moving to open a drawer full of various tools to paint one's features.

"You come to me on the eve of my valiant defeat of the final boss of Dragon Blazers 2 for makeup advice?"

a laugh erupts from the eldest, affection laced through each breath. pulling out some well used eyeliner pens, dess gestures towards the barren bed across the room, moving the chair up to it's edge.

"Of course I'll help you, you know I'm always here to encourage rebellion. Just don't tell mom, okay?"

Well, at the very least this confirms it is not a nightmare…But then, you quickly feel for your chest. And it’s silent, nothing resonating from within you…Good you’re in the clear, you couldn’t let IT find out anything…At least not now, after all. You were still playing this game of truces with everyone after all.

You let out a sigh of relief, before staring at Dess…Or at least this version of her. 

“I want to see the stars.”

Simple, almost child-like…A stark reminder that the weight of the world rests on the shoulders of a young teenager barely in high school that holds an entity within them that needs safe passage to the end of this tale. 

“..It has been some time..Yes” The words have trouble leaving your mouth, a form of shyness oozing from them. You’re still getting used to this…Used to her covered in a darkness even here.

“...Are you okay?”

kris' question rings out amongst the street, and dess' head twitches ever so slightly at the inquiry. silence befalls the two, as her heart begins to pulse rapidly, but not from anxiety. the blight in her heart was beginning to ebb at her.

"Okay? C'mon Kris, you don't need to worry about me. Of course I'm alright!"

another pang of darkness wrecks her, in a slightly more noticeable spasm. carrying the weight of the dark world . . . did it really impact her being in the light world ??

"After all, I was meant to protect you, there's no need to worry."

twitch.

there was something about kris' being that seemingly felt like it was slowly crippling dess. was it always this way? why was the roar in her ears so loud all of a sudden? her vision was darkening slowly, but dess would not succumb.

"It's what I promised, after all. If it's stars you want to see . . . its up to me to help you. It's what he wanted."

the foliage that surrounded hometown was thick, hardly considered to be foliage. the forest was thick and dense, and seldom offered room for clearings. it would take someone skilled to navigate the woods, and dess was no stranger.

the holiday was a stranger to hometown at this rate, or more accurately a ghost. it was almost as if her existence had been . . . erased. but dess would never complain. she stuck to her vagabond ways, for now.

her thoughts dissipated in an instance, turning in an instance like a deer in the headlights to look for the sound. strange was it to hear a sound in the quiet of the forest, even stranger to imagine it'd be somebody.

"Show yourself."

her authoritative voice echoed through the settling silence, face hardening in suspicion. better to confront things head on than run away, right ??

far from town walked dess, ragged and beaten. darkness plagued her heart, and exhaustion weighed her down after spending so much time in the dark world. reprieve was needed, but she wasn't about to stumble in the middle of the woods.

even if she knew the forest was safe, it still wouldn't be smart to curl up for a rest, especially with the moonlight being her only guide in between the canopy of leaves. so there she walked, a lonely road for a lonely soul.

the path she followed was steady, and after some time, dess completely forgot where she was headed. or if she even had a destination . . .

it wasn't until the deer ended up in front of a massive oak tree that she realized a wrong turn was taken. was this always here before? dess could've sworn she knew all the secrets of the outskirts of town, but here laid a mystery. faint light was coming from an enclave in the trunk, almost as if it was a window. squinting in the dark, she could tell there was a door on the side.

bells rang in her head for warning, yet she was never one to back down from fear. with a brave step, a hand reached up to knock ever so softly.

"Anybody in there ??"

dess would swear up and down to only listen to "good" music, usually in the punk, metal or alternative sphere, but don't be fooled . . . she's probably got some pop in there. i imagine when she first started crushing on asriel, the deltarune equivalent to taylor swift was on repeat a bit.

lightheartedness aside though, dess' primary secret is that she's scared.

heiress to the holiday's governmental power, dess has always had to have a strong face. in front of her mother, she would never dare show emotion. to her sister? dess needs to protect her, she can't have noelle knowing what's going on inside. asriel and kris? they have their own problems. dess needs to be there for them.

emotional vulnerability does not come easy for her, and the weight she bears is a secret only she will ever know the full extent of. (even if dess may not be the best at hiding it.)

i think dess plays video games (i'm pretty sure we already know she does considering the conversation noelle had with susie about one) and i think she'd play as a dark knight in ffxiv. : )

i might be biased in saying that, and it's an obvious pick . . . but she'd definitely be a tank main. i think she'd struggle with healing, but i could also see her as viper or reaper for a melee dps.

i just really like ffxiv.

in all her glory, it is exactly who kris imagines it to be. baseball bat held in hand and slung across a shoulder stands dess, just how she always was. hair fluffy with streaks of red, cheek turned upwards into a sly grin, eyes hooded with mischief. but something was different.

"There's a city beyond here that plagues the light pollution, did you know?"

despite her ever cheery demeanor, there's a hint of darkness that surrounds her. so faint, one would never detect it in the light world, but kris . . . well, dess was sure they could feel it.

"Been a long time, huh, kid? Or would you say it's been too soon, I wonder?"
