Asylum by Madeleine Roux Review (Spoiler Free)
First off I dont know why im doing this, but I was bored and felt like it. :)
The first thing I should mention, this book is ~300 pages and is a mix between a mystery and creepy/horror book. I will say this though, it is not horror in the sense of Michael Myers or Jason.
The first thing that I found interesting and cool is that it includes some pictures found in real asylums. In my opinion the pictures did not overcrowd this book, but actually added a sense of realness to the story. Most of the pictures correlates with something the narrator describes or a room/building they encounter. This story is centered around a 16 year old boy named Dan Crawford, and he is the narrator of the story. Along with Dan we have two other main “supporting” characters even though their stories are just about as good as Dan’s. The first is a girl named Abby, and the second is a boy named Jordan. They both have family problems, and become great friends with Dan. The three of them, along with other students, like Dan’s roommate Felix arrive at a renowned school for a college prep program. However because of repairs on the dorms, the students must stay in a different dorm that used to be a psychiatry hospital. In this dorm they find things that tell them they have old ties in relation to the psychiatric hospital.
The most in-your-face mystery will have you second guessing yourself, much like Dan himself. If you want to read this as a “one and done” book this is not for you. Many of the mysteries will not be solved in the first novel, or at least not entirely and will make you read the following novels for it to all be solved. The reason for my rating is that, honestly I read a lot and so it would have to be in my top 3 to get a higher rating, and it just wasn't that. While I love the character development, the plot, the story, and even just the characters themselves, it does have its flaws. Heres what I will say so I dont spoil anything, the mysteries could have been better, and more developed, and I think the author held back in writing this and wanted it to be easier because it is technically a teens novel.
Dan: He has always been a “follow the rules” kind of guy, and has also always had some social disorders. He is also an orphan and is particularly interested in history. I would say that Dan is not used to having friends, or really any close relationships with anyone but his adoptive parents. He is what most people would consider awkward or even in extreme a geek. He really has to break out of his shell in this novel, which proves to be interesting. He is caring, and will try very hard to keep his relationships intact. He is also very curious and will definitely surprise you.
Abby: Is the fun, loving, glue of the group kind of person. She has parents that are not the most stable, and is a emotional and joking kind of person. She is very sociable, the kind that anyone could get along with, and her favorite subject is art. she has quite a temper that may surprise you, but is very determined and cares for her friends.She is even more curious than Dan, and cares very deeply of the tasks in front of her. Abby is someone you will like having around, and have fun with. and she has some quirky sides too.
Jordan: Even though it isn't a huge spoiler, it might make the beginning chapters of this novel a little less enjoyable so this is what I will say. He was not supposed to go to this school, but objected his parents, the reason as to why you'll have to find out for yourself :) Jordan is a doubtful guy that can certainly hold a grudge. He is the teasing pokey type, but makes out well in this group of friends. He is a seclusive. hide his emotions kind of guy, but will no doubt end up being one of your favorite characters. He is also scared of breaking the rules and will be flat out truthful to you even if it hurts. His favorite subject is math.. I forgot to add that in.
There are many other characters but you will have to read to find out more about them.
