"Mm-hm," said Nimue, as the shiny Zoroark mother finished laying the blanket over Mohan and the six pups piled onto his lap. "I didn't want to move him so, I'll just make him comfy where he is."
"Right. Might be a good idea if we all stayed in the same room tonight anyway," said Merlin
"...Do you think he meant it?"
"I don't know. He seemed serious but... well, we can't tell for certain until something happens. For now, we better stay on guard."
The two of them looked up as the back door opened.
"Hekate. You're home late."
"I know, sorry," the Zorua apologised to her father. "But there was some skulking round, so I waited for them to leave."
"Would you stay home for a couple of days? At least until that man is gone."
"Is he dangerous?"
"We don't know yet. But right now he's not exactly a friend."
Mohan leant against the door for a good couple of minutes, mentally reeling from what had just happened.
He'd never shouted like that before. Hell, he'd neverĀ shoutedĀ before. He'd always prided himself on someone who wasn't eager to anger, but Reid had just pushed so many buttons. He never knew how much hatred he had held for him.
A couple of deep breaths later and he was stood up properly again. As he turned around, he spotted numbers one to six all huddled in the corner in fear.
"What's the matter? He's not here any more."
A heartbeat later and he realised it wasn't Reid they were afraid of.
Mohan was at the end of his rope. And that was saying something, because it was a pretty long rope.Ā
He couldn't take it any more. The constant knocking and calling was driving him mad. He'd been so on edge and highly strung that he just couldn't settle down. Nimue had taken over taking care of the pups, and Merlin had to tail Mohan so he didn't do anything stupid.Ā
Finally, he'd had enough.
All it took was one knock on the door and the breeder wrenched it open it a contained fury that could power Mauville for years. Reid never even got the chance to open his mouth.
"Go away."
"What?"Ā
"Go. Away."
"But I--"
"I don't care. I've said what I wanted to say to you, and I don't care about what you have to say to me. Go away."
"But you haven't even heard what I have to say."
"You have no right to excuse yourself or explain yourself. You abandoned my mother; you have no place in my life."
"She was a witch!"
"So what?! If you really cared for her, that wouldn't matter. But obviously it did, and you left her when she needed you, like the scumbag you are."
"That is no way to talk to your fa--"
"You are not my father! You are some shitty excuse for human who I happen to share DNA with. There are long dead distant relatives who have more importance in my life than you! And guess what? I'm a witch too!"
There was a strange satisfaction in Mohan as he watched Reid take half a step back.Ā
"Now leave my home, and don't ever come back."
Reid's foot got in the way as he went to close the door. "I will come and go as I please," said the man. "Being a witch was what killed your mother, and it'll happen to you too. I'll make sure of it." He made the mistake of grabbing hold of Mohan as he spoke.
"Get off me."
"No."
"G$3 OFF ļ¼ļ¼„."
The shriek sent pups skittering away and could be heard half way down the route. Reid did let go, but only to cover his ears.Ā
"L$4V$."
Reid backed off again. Eventually, he was off Mohan's property. "Mark my words, Mohan," he called. "You'll regret the day you ever became a witch."
But he is family⦠If nothing else, it would be wise to listen to what he has to say, donāt you think? Surely after so long, there is a reason for his returning?
