King of the Garden. Manduca sexta is a moth of the family Sphingidae present through much of the American continent. Commonly known as the tobacco hornworm and the goliath worm, it is closely related to and often confused with the very similar tomato hornworm.

in order to get these photos, suzie, who noticed a mother venturing alone into a den to give birth, waited patiently outside until the cubs emerged – and this after three months of slowly getting the mother and pride comfortable with her presence.
notes suzie, "it’s a delicate thing gaining an animal’s trust, particularly when it’s an animal that has newborns.” but she adds, “if you spend enough time around these animals, if you wait through the slow periods (and lions sleep about twenty hours a day) …you get to witness stuff that’s very special and very rare.”
and after seven weeks of waiting, suzie witnessed the mother bring her cubs out of the den to meet the pride and their father for the first time, and witnessed the father react by gently playing with them, even when bitten.

Alright, I am finally ready to talk about it. I am ready to (walk away from this article) address the matters that lead to the demise of this historical University of Kentucky Basketball team. I never really saw a light in this game aside for a few plays. They didn’t amount to much but they had the looks of Kentucky Basketball. Aside from all speculation, our worst mistake was coming out to play against this Wisconsin team in a man to man defense. Wisconsin’s offense was known all year long as the cutting and screening team. Although the woes seemed to be going through all players, the worst of the Wildcat blues was for Devin Booker. Whoever he was matched up against him offensively, was setting the screen for Frank Kaminsky the entire game. Kaminsky was driving on Booker like Paul Walker. In the first half, it was fine. The game was at zero’s again at the end of the first.
This is where the real discouragement settled in. The second half started and there were NO ADJUSTMENTS. NO ADJUSTMENTS?! I repeat, NOOOOO ADJUUUSTMEEEEENTS. What could have stopped this Wisconsin offense was left in the back pocket of Coach Cal. My favorite defense of the year was our 1 - 3 - 1 zone. I call it the 1 - 3 - 1 because of the shape, not necessarily the purpose. In the zone, with Cauley -Stein at the top of the key guarding the point, leaves Towns guarding the basket, and three other defenders on the three point stripe. Have we ever seen a zone defense where W.C.S. doesnt come from behind as the help shot blocker? A good zone defense prevents two things. Down low scoring and players switching assignments. I like our chances with this defense but felt hopeless after seeing that we would come out the second half to play first half basketball. The last quarrel in my head over the game was the fact that Tyler Ulis only played 17 minutes. I would have named him my starter for the entire SEC tournament and on.

Do you have a ballpark figure or percentage of how much you save on groceries by urban gardening?
Not really. There’a lot of things at play here:
So much of my garden food goes to waste or is given away because there’s too much.
My husband keeps buying stuff I have growing & ready to eat. (poophead!)
My garden plot/pots is rather small since I’m on a city lot.
I only spend about $15/year on seed; $20 on new food plants. This year, I’ve bought no food plants, IIRC. I bought seeds & onion sets, so that’s $9 since Dec. All other seeds/plants are volunteers or freebies.
I grow varieties of items I can’t find in my local store (I no longer shop at farmer’s markets unless necessary). Example: Years ago I was growing Black from Tula tomatoes. I once saw the same tomatoes at a farmer’s market for ~$4 per fruit.
Fruits, I still have to buy since my trees are jerks and still have years to grow. With our drought, the ones that fruit have decreased production.
And finally, starting out means lots of money in soil, soil prep/testing, containers, beds, pesticides, etc. I always suggest people start small in pots to see if it’s worthwhile to them.
