I had an interview with a local paper this week about this rock snake I started on the longest street of a nearby city (where I work) because it's bringing people so much joy:

I said something during the interview that the interviewer seemed really shocked by, so in case it's important for anyone else to hear: When asked about the rock snake and some scavenger hunts that I've hosted for adults, I said -

pillbugs aren’t the only animals to have evolved a conglobating form (and in fact it happened many, many times independently among isopods too)! because European species have been introduced worldwide they just happen to be the ones most people are familiar with.

pill millipedes might have done it first, actually! you can distinguish them from isopods by their greater number of segments, legs, and beaded antennae (isopods only have 7 leg pairs).

there’s plenty more but pill cockroaches are very much cockroaches—you can see that in the males, who at adulthood develop wings and a much more roachlike body than the conglobating females and juveniles.

also, that’s only one roach in the OP. it’s just sitting next to its molted skin (normal color); these animals are bright red before their new exoskeleton hardens.
