Your friend is visiting. You live in a hot climate and they don't.
It's mid-morning, still deceptively cool but not for long. There's a heat wave on its way.
They mention offhandedly that it's not very hot out. Do you really think I need to bring my water bottle? It's kinda heavy, and it's just a short trip to the store...
Of course they do. You know that. But you brush it off with a smile. Oh, no, it's not far. You'll be fine. We can get something to drink once we're there.
They believe you.
It is a short walk to the store, barely five minutes, but they don't need to know that. They're unfamiliar with the area, and they don't know enough to call you out on any wrong turns. A five-minute walk turns into six, seven, eight, nine.
They're stubborn. You're taking swigs from your water bottle, which of course you brought, and they rib you a little for being sensitive to the heat despite living here all your life. But after the ten-minute mark, their cheeks are flushed and their eyes are watering. They're not athletic, to put it mildly, and they've never experienced a summer this hot. They ask you for some water.
You should've brought your own, silly, you chide. I told you so. Besides, we're almost there.
They look a little hurt, maybe even a little scared. You wonder if they'll call you out on your blatant lie.
But your tone is light and friendly, and surely you'd tell them if they were in real danger. You're their friend. They probably just misremembered.
You're getting a little hot yourself, but you're dressed properly for the weather, hydrated and wearing sunscreen. They've made the mistake of thinking less clothing is better in the heat - their back and shoulders are blooming with patches of pink, and you can hear the exertion in their voice when they ask how much longer it'll be.
Just, like, two more minutes, I swear.
Can I please have some water? You're past the point where their need can reasonably be denied, so you hand over what's left of your water. It's barely a couple of mouthfuls. You don't mention the second bottle stashed in your backpack.
They're obviously disappointed and on the edge of panic, but they try to stay calm. You're calm, after all, and wouldn't you know if the heat was getting dangerous?
You said it was a short walk. They're trying to hide their discomfort behind a good-natured pout. You consider this. There are a few different ways you could respond - is now the right time to tip your hand? You gauge their panting, their dripping sweat, the slight stagger in their step, and decide against it... for now.
What are you talking about? It's only been a couple minutes. Is the heat really getting to you that much?
They don't believe you this time. You can see it in their eyes. But they still want to, because the other option is so much worse. You've never been cruel to them before, and they can't understand why you'd do this. Maybe they're wrong, maybe the heat really is getting to them.
At least that last part is true.
Fifteen minutes.
Can we just, like, turn around? Or sit down for a second? Their eyes are rabbit-like, darting and dilated.
Of course, you tell them like nothing's wrong. I'm sorry; I would've just gone by myself if I'd known you were so sensitive to the heat.
Normally they'd lean on your shoulder, but instead they fold their knees into their chest and sit an arm's length away from you, trying to fit their whole body into the tiny patch of shade cast by a single tree.
This sucks, they whine, trying to maintain a sense of playful annoyance. But they're shivering slightly. My legs are cramping up a little.
I'm so sorry, you say, feigning innocence. I swear to god if we sprint, we'll get there in just a few seconds. You can't see it from here, but it's close.
Are you insane? I can't sprint.
Then you're gonna have to stay out here longer, you tease.
They're too tired and scared to roll their eyes at you. Good.
Twenty minutes.
You're limping pretty bad. This isn't normal even for the heat, you know... did you eat before we left?
You know they did. You saw them do it.
They're crying. You're not following the road anymore, and they're too delirious to remember with direction it is. I'm scared. I think something's wrong. I'm gonna -
They collapse onto the rocky soil, scraping their knees. They retch again and again before their breakfast comes up.
You'll be okay. I'll get you somewhere with air conditioning really soon, I promise.
They're not responding anymore, just crying. Their bare stomach ripples like an insect sprayed with Raid. Their knees are bleeding and their thighs are stained with vomit.
Twenty-five minutes.
You look cute like that. I'm glad I brought you out here.

I didn't bring my phone. It's a short walk.
You rub their back. They flinch away from your touch. They don't see you take out the second water bottle and drink.

The crying and vomiting hasn't helped their dehydration. You help them limp behind a boulder, pressing their burnt back against its hot surface.

They look you in the eyes then. Their lips are red and raw. They're drooling and panting.
Please. I'm scared. I don't think this is normal.

You don't say another word to them. You walk down the hill and make your way back to the road. You're exhausted and pink when you finally make it to the nearest gas station, but you're alive. You spend half an hour cooling off, drinking Gatorade and getting ribbed at by the cashier who knows you know better.

there was this one post from rotten.com back in the day about some guy whose water heater didn't work, so he just brought a space heater or something into the bathtub with him?
predictably he died of electricution, and he was just left in the bathtub for weeks on end in scalding hot water
when folks finally found him, he was just a decomposed black and red sludge mixed into the water
but you do have to wonder if there'd be a point, maybe only a couple hours later, where he'd be a perfectly tender stew
