I really love how famous Jay's struggle to fit into his new reality is exemplified in part by his rv's TV not having RCA input jacks. it's such a given in his mind that he'd have an N64 and a TV that it can easily be hooked to, despite that being largely obsolete tech that you'd have to go out of your way to maintain in the modern era. it's a nice manifestation of that safe bubble of nostalgia that he's used to living in with Matt, where such things aren't obsolete because they've always been there, their use or age never questioned. as in famous Jay's N64 scene, there's a real sense of loss felt when you realize the technology you have has left you behind, your composite cables useless in the face of a sleek LCD display with a single hdmi port, a world of fun lost to a format change that you didn't keep up with. a world that was previously a simple extension of him, now a chasm.

there's something about the substance of a CRT as well; the impact it has on a room in comparison to an LCD tv. much like Matt and Jay, CRTs are stuck in an earlier time, their form unreasonable in the face of better options. they're heavy, large, and emit a piercing whine that many can't stand. they're hard to fix and might kill you if you try. but the warmth of the screen, the solidity of its chassis -- it has a charm that can't be replicated. they're simple and dependable. slot in the cables, power it on, and you're playing Goldeneye with your best friend. a CRT tv is a piece of furniture, solid and self-assured in its place in the room. compare this to an LCD flatscreen, which is much sleeker. it's less of a fixture; it doesn't need to be. it's just a screen you have in your room, demure and capable, no fuss or whine. palatable, marketable. it's the right thing to have. you'd have to be a stunted nerd to keep a CRT around. nevermind that the air feels thin without that whine

my ideal seasons 3+4 of ntbts would be like. season 3 is about somehow connecting the gap between the TEN YEAR timeskip from the end of season 2 to the movie. season 3 ends with the cn tower plan and it… works!? they actually get a show at the rivoli booked. and then season 4 is them planning the rivoli show and it’s Horrible and Terrible and they’re miserable because it never really was about the rivoli was it. and season 4 ends with them cancelling the rivoli show :) because they never really wanted it they just wanted to be happy togetherrrrrrrr
