True Detective S02E05 “Other Lives”

“A few small nips (Unos cuantos piquetitos)”, 1935, Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), Museo Dolores Olmeda, Mexico City

This painting depicts Kahlo’s disgust at violence against women. The title comes from words actually spoken in the trial of a jealous man for murdering his wife - he claimed he only gave her “a few small nips”. The painting is also infused with Kahlo’s own anger at the constant infidelity of her husband, the painter Diego Rivera (featured here), including with her sister. She apparently stabbed the frame herself upon completion.

The Parisian band Man Is Not a Bird played in front of an overcrowded Olympia two nights ago in Paris, as the supporting act of the legendary band Ride.
