Alfons Mucha - La Trappistine
emily dickinson suggestion: be so reclusive that people in your town refer to you as “the myth”
What she says: I’m fine.
What she means: I understand the Chronicles of Narnia was at its heart a fairytale with theological analogies for children. But why did Lewis never address how they had to adapted to life on Earth again. Why does no one talk about how the Pevensies had to grow up with a kingdom of responsibilities on their shoulders, only to return to Earth and be children. Take Lucy, she was youngest and perhaps she adapted more quickly-but she had the memories and mind of a grown woman in an adolescent body. Edmund literally found himself in Narnia, he went from a selfish boy to mature and experienced man. He found a purpose and identity through his experiences to come back as just Edmund, Peter’s younger brother. Did people wonder why the sullen, sour boy came back, carrying himself like a wisened king? Did his mother wonder why he and Peter suddenly got along so well, why they spent so much time together now? And Susan, the girl of logistics and reason came back with a difference in her. She learned how to be a diplomat and ambassador, Susan the Gentle had to live to endure not-so-gentle circumstances. She had the respect she wanted, only to be just another teen girl. And Peter, he entered the manhood and maturity he so wanted. He earned the responsibility and stripes he yearned for. He learned to command armies and conduct the menial tasks demanded of a king to rule a nation. But he came back, appearing to be just anther glory-hungry boy. Not to mention the PTSD they must have struggled with. Especially Edmund. How often did he wake up in a sweat, screaming a sibling or comrade’s name? His parents believe it’s the war, but it’s an entirely different one he has nightmares about. How often did he have trouble with flashbacks and mood swings? And how many times did he and Peter sit over a newspaper or near the radio listening to reports on the troops. How often did they pour over lost battles and debate better strategies. Did their parents ever wonder why they seemed to understand flight war so well? How long was it before they stopped discussing these things in front of people? Why does no one talk about this???
Why am i fucking crying
Why does no one talk about how the Pevensies had to grow up with a kingdom of responsibilities on their shoulders, only to return to Earth and be children
It’s not addressed because it’s understood. It was the shared experience of the generation. You are describing coming home from World War One, battle wearied and aged beyond belief, but walking around in the body of a youth. C S Lewis went to the front line of the Somme on his nineteenth birthday and went back to complete uni in 1918 after demob.

I wanna do this. My students are the worst.
this is the funniest thing i’ve seen all day
being the last person still laughing too much at a joke is a very big problem in my life
easter is on april fools day this year and all i can think about is the bible story of jesus
an apostle: man i can’t believe jesus died
jesus, rising from the grave: surprise bitch april fools
an apostle: we thought you were dead!
jesus, about to invent april fools: oh, you haven’t heard?
the biggest lie i ever told & how my husband came to protect it
for years i have lived this lie telling everyone i am allergic to peanuts because i hate the smell of peanut butter and it makes me gag and makes my throat feel gross after eating it and so i don’t really like peanut butter that much but whenever i used to tell people i don’t like peanut butter they’d get all defensive like “peanut butter is amazing how do you not like it?!” and then i’d have to go into this whole thing to defend my taste buds.
but then i got tired of it and started telling people that i’m just allergic to peanuts because that way it’s not my fault that i hate the smell of peanut butter - it’s now like i’m a sad little baby who will never get to taste peanut butter ever in her life and everyone feels sad for me.
but the problem is that i really love peanut m&ms and so now i can only eat peanut m&ms when i’m at home in secret. the only person who knows my lie is my husband. and so at work this evening we had a small celebration for someone and they had peanut m&ms and i really wanted some but obviously couldn’t eat them in public because then people would know my peanut secret.
and so when we got home after work my husband tipped his jacket over and emptied his pockets and at least thirty or so peanut m&ms fell out of his pockets and he whispered, “i was sneakily accumulating them all night for you because i could see the pain in your eyes.”
and if that isn’t love then i don’t know what is.

Maybe misusing the name of God isn’t so much about saying the shallow words, “Oh my God,” as it is about using the name of God to justify discrimination, oppression, injustice, racism, slavery, xenophobia, poverty, sexism, islamophobia, ableism, homophobia, war, & the list can go on.
also, antisemitism - felt like that one needs mentioning since our religious texts not only got appropriated but then got used as justification for 2000 years of systematic discrimination, intolerance, and genocide by the same people who appropriated them
Reblogging again for this last comment
speaking of jesus being the classical snarkmaster
you know that line about “if a soldier forces you to carry his pack for one mile, carry it for two”?
there was a thing where roman soldiers could demand that civilians carry their gear, but only for a mile. obviously people did not like this. they had shit to be doing. they did not want to be some rando’s pack mule any more than people today would. also, it was kind of scary, because here’s this guy with a weapon saying “you’re my fetchit bitch or else.” and you had to go off with him wherever he wanted, up to one mile.
but jesus was all about the nonviolent resistance. i mean, sure, you could run, but then maybe they see you later and point you out to the cops, it’s a small world. maybe they chase you down and kick you around a bit. hell, maybe they show you their stabs. you gonna bring a sword of your own and make a duel out of it? that’s even worse than just carrying the damn pack.
so what you do is, you just keep carrying it.
at first they don’t notice the mile’s up. but then it starts feeling kind of long. they find themselves waiting for you to call time. but you don’t. you just keep going. they start checking the landmarks. are they lost? are they dreaming? are you stealing their shit? you can’t be, can you, since you’re right there. but you’re still HOLDING it. they’re wondering if they’re ever gonna get their centurion undies back. they could ask, but waitasec, you’re carrying their stuff, which is what they said to do, so that’s good, right?
but why are you still HERE?
are you trying to be friends? are you an assassin? are you a vet just helping a brother out? are you up to something? are you crazy? are you sleepwalking? are THEY sleepwalking? WHAT IS EVEN GOING ONNN NN N
at mile marker 2 you set the pack down and go “have a nice day!” and bail
and next time they think of handing their shit to some stranger, maybe they think again.
Yeh but you see it goes further than that. Roman law stated that any soldier could tell them to carry their pack for a mile, and that poor random person HAD do to it. But here’s the thing
They could only carry it for a mile, and if they carried it further (the assumption being that the soldier kept forcing the person to keep carrying it) the soldier could get in HUUUUUGE trouble.
So this soldier and some civilian (I believe it had to be someone who was not a Roman citizen?? I can’t quite remember) are walking along, and they hit the mile marker. The soldier demands his pack be returned.
“No no, allow me, I’m not tired!” Says the civilian, and keeps on walking.
The soldier keeps asking, maybe rather threatening, but the civilian just keeps kindly insisting to help, it’s not a problem, let me help you, etc. and continues walking.
It then gets to the point that the soldier has to be like “Hey, man c’mon, I could really get in trouble for this…please give it back”
What has just happened was a serious change in power dynamics. It went from the soldier being in control of the situation and treating the civilian as lesser, to the civilian being in control, and the soldier treating the civilian as an equal.
What Jesus was teaching was not to lay down and submit to authority, but how to passively command respect, to be treated as an equal.
I’m
It’s amazing how so many Christians have no clue just how radical Jesus was and how much they wouldn’t actually like him if he was around today.
Jesus is around today! He is the Black Lives Matter movement, he’s the Women’s March, he’s the Dakota Access Pipeline protesters, he’s Planned Parenthood, he’s Pride, all of these protests and voices of the marginalized are the same message: treat marginalized people as human beings.
And yes, the people in power still fucking hate him and everything he stood for. It’s just a really sick irony that they claim to be his number one fans while shitting all over everything he fought so hard for.
there’s a reason he said “love your neighbor as yourself” – the point is that other people are the same as you. we’re all in this together.
and to paraphrase pratchett, there’s no sin that doesn’t boil down to treating people as things.
The premise of minimum wage, when it was introduced, was that a single wage earner should be able to own a home and support a family. That was what it was based on; a full time job, any job, should be able to accomplish this.
The fact people scoff at this idea if presented nowadays, as though the people that ring up your groceries or hand you your burgers don’t deserve the luxury of a home and a family, is disgusting.
Also if a livable wage breaks the system then the system deserves to be broken.
if a livable wage breaks the system, then the system deserves to be broken
I remember when I was on SNAP (food stamps) it didn’t matter what I’d buy, people gave me looks. They judged me no matter what. With the news about Trump trying to get rid of SNAP and replace it with a government box of food, I’ve seen a lot of comments from people judging those who receive SNAP benefits.
First the idea is terrible. There’s way too many people with food allergies, dietary restrictions and not to mention we are a free nation where the government doesn’t choice what, when and how we get to eat.
When I was on SNAP I would normal buy organic foods as often as possible. I was lucky enough to have a small local farmers market less than a 20 minutes walk from my apartment, and they accepted SNAP.
I would get people staring and judging me, giving me dirty looks. I even had 1 woman say to me “I love that you can spend my money and get organic meat, must be nice.”
But on the flipside when people would see me buying some tater tots and hotdogs (when I knew I was gonna be babysitting for my friend or when I knew I had a long work week ahead of me and I wanted to have quick food to eat) they would also give me that same look of disgust. Again I had some old white lady say to me “you’d think if you’re spending my money to get food, you’d at least get something healthy but trash is trash.”
There’s no winning with these people.
First, I have no idea why they think they’re $20 a year (yeah that’s about as much of their yearly federal taxes go to SNAP) is making that big of a difference in my life personally. Second, you have to be working a certain amount of hours to even qualify to get SNAP benefits. So it’s not as if I was sitting on my ass all day playing GTA and eating mini donuts. I too was paying those same taxes.
Another comment I’ve seen going around is people saying “Food stamp day”
First of all “food stamp day” isn’t a fucking thing. Everyone receives their SNAP benefits on an EBT card on a different day of the month, based on the last digit of their SSN.
Second, you have to be working, going to school, volunteering or disabled in order to qualify for SNAP benefits.
Lastly, I wish these people would learn how to use proper grammar. I don’t think I can read one more run-on sentence lol.
Okay, let’s get this straight. SNAP benefits are on an EBT card. You CAN NOT get this money out in cash. You can only use this card to buy EBT eligible items which is usually whatever UNCOOKED food you can get at grocery store (or some farmers markets). So Unless someone’s drug dealer is willing to trade their drugs for food, this wouldn’t work.
“They don’t work” but yet they have a “luxury car.” Also, does anyone else notice that the only people who supposedly witness this “blatant abuse” are whiny ass white ladies??
And even if these people are buying shrimp (which isn’t a luxury food, at least not where I live) and lobster, who the fuck cares. They only get a certain amount of money in SNAP benefits each month. If they want to waste it all for 4 days works of lobster and steak than let them. They’ll be starving the rest of the month.
Food stamps aren’t like the bottomless fries you get at Red Robin, Sandra. Each person has a limit and once they reach that limit each month, they don’t have any money until the next month.
And to end this long rant I’d like to say that all the money I received from the SNAP benefit, I am now paying it back. Why? Because someone fucked up and gave me benefits when I didn’t actually qualify for them. I wasn’t working enough hours (I was only working part time, which is why I needed the benefits because I was dealing with some medical issues at the time. And I didn’t know this made me unqualified to receive them) but this dumbass didn’t do his job right and he still approved me for 6 months of benefits. Now, I have to pay them back because of his mistake. And I have been paying them back (since March of 2017) - It’s considered an “agency error”
Here’s an article about another woman who was also ordered to pay back food stamp benefits after an agency error gave her over $5,000 in benefits that she wasn’t suppose to get but they fucked up and gave it to her anyways.
So Sandra, you’re fucking tax dollars didn’t give me shit.
And if you’re still not satisfied with all the information I’ve given you can check out THIS which goes over the myths, misconceptions and facts about food stamps.
