A powerful memorial: dozens of pairs of iron shoes, left behind on the riverbank. A tribute to the victims of the Holocaust in Budapest, forced to remove their shoes before being executed—tied together in pairs: one shot dead, the other condemned to drown or freeze in the waters of the Danube. I imagine a river full of bodies.

The executioners? Not the Nazis, but fellow Hungarians—members of the fascist Arrow Cross militia who, even after the Germans had fled, finished the job. They murdered the remaining Jewish prisoners just before the Red Army entered Budapest.

The Liberty Bridge is one of the bridges in Budapest that cross the Danube and connect Buda with Pest.

It was built between 1894 and 1896 and was inaugurated by Emperor Franz Joseph.

Demolished on January 16, 1945 by German troops, it was rebuilt in August 1946 and reopened to traffic.

Next to the official Memorial for the Victims of the German Occupation, a spontaneous counter-monument has taken shape. Photos, letters, shoes, suitcases, and white stones — left as a sign of remembrance according to Jewish tradition — tell the forgotten stories of Holocaust victims.

The state monument depicts the Archangel Gabriel being attacked by the Nazi eagle — symbolizing the German invasion of 1944. But it has been widely criticized for ignoring the active role many Hungarian citizens played in the deportation of Jews.

That’s why, around the official site, a memorial within the memorial has emerged — created by the people, so that memory lives on.
