“Shane, how does it feel to be back on Montreal ice?”

So anyway, let’s talk about what happens when Shane finds out that Wiebe is bisexual.

Because during The Long Game, Ilya decides not to tell Shane because it’s not his secret to tell, and Shane has to find out eventually, right? Wiebe says something like “I’m sure Ilya has told you that I understand a little bit about your situation.” And Shane is thinking like, what, you definitely don’t, you were a mid player at your absolute best. But eventually Wiebe gets the point across and it goes, I think, one of a couple different ways:

One: Shane HATES this information and tries to memory hole it immediately. Shane has had a complicated psychosexual attachment to every hockey coach he’s ever had, which is fine because hockey coaches are straighter than God. Even though both Shane and Wiebe are in happily married monogamous relationships, finding out that it’s actually hypothetically possible for a coach to experience reciprocal attraction to him is the worst thing that’s ever happened.

Two: Finding out that Wiebe is bisexual pushes Shane over the edge into having a meta-textual breakdown. Shane: “It’s fucking ridiculous. It’s absurd! We’re already the gayest team in the league. The gay married team. And now we have a gay coach?” Ilya: “Lubimiy, he is bisexual, do not make me ask Harris to give another PowerPoint presentation on bisexual erasure.”

Three: Shane pours over stats from Detroit’s 2001 season and figures out who Wiebe’s teammate was in less than 60 minutes.

I do think Cliff was very proud of Ilya for pulling Shane motherfucking Hollander when he found out. I do also think we was very confused about Ilya suddenly having gone gay. He didn't have a problem with it, he just didn't see it coming, and he's not really sure how to act around him the first time he they hang out together, just the two of them, after the leak.

He wants to show Ilya that he's good with him - that he can be his gay self around him - so the first time they meet up, Cliff suggests they go shopping. Ilya's a little confused. He and Cliff have never gone shopping together and, though it could be fun, he's not really feeling up for a full outing. Cliff then suggests brunch and, when Ilya shoots that down too, he asks if Ottawa has any gay bars they could go to. Although the idea of watching Cliff get hit on by guys all night is vaguely tempting, Ilya suggests they just meet at home and play some video games.

Cliff feels a little disappointed Ilya isn't ready to share his gay side with him but he gets it. He knows how the hockey culture is and maybe he just needs to show Ilya he's a proper ally and then he'll let himself be his gayest self.

Throughout their hang, he keeps trying to subtly show Ilya that he's safe around him. He talks about the latest season of Drag Race, he asks him who's his favourite Will and Grace character and says he likes Jack the most, he asks who his favourite pop diva is and tells him he thinks Beyoncé is rad. Ilya doesn't seem to take the hint though. Apparently he isn't watching the latest Drag Race season, he doesn't know who his favourite Will and Grace character is and he tells Cliff he already knows Ilya's more of a rap guy but Beyoncé's cool. He prefers Megan Thee Stallion, though.

When Ilya brings out a couple of beers for them, Cliff carefully tells Ilya that if he wants a White Claw or something instead, then that's okay. Apparently, that's Ilya's breaking point and he goes off like, "Cliff, I'm the same fucking person I was, okay? I still like the same stuff. The only thing I didn't share is that I also like fucking men. I drink beer. I drink vodka. Shane and I play video games, we watch hockey, we watch rugby, we work out together." Cliff is a little confused, "and then you fuck?" "Yes, Marley, and then we fuck. Do you have a problem with that?" And all Cliff can say is, "that sounds pretty awesome." And it really does. If what Ilya's saying is true, it sounds like being gay is just like having a best bro who also makes you cum. That sounds like a fucking dream, to be honest.

Thinking about Shane learning the Russian words for ‘my little bear’ because Ilya’s so large and imposing but so soft and his hair is so fluffy- but he also delights in knowing he can use it on Ilya to needle at him and sweetly annoy him. He can imagine Ilya’s faux-irritated brow crease, followed by wrestling Shane into the couch to prove he’s no little bear- he’s a grizzly bear who’s going to eat Shane for breakfast…

So he works to get the pronunciation down, and finally springs it on him one day when Ilya’s just come in from the lake, hair air dried and floofy and he’s all open limbs and soft edges.

The moment the words fill the space, Ilya goes silent, and tears start to fall. Shane panics, and closes the gap between them to hold his husband close with a crushing grip.

‘What’s wrong? Did I not do it right? Did I say something bad?’

Ilya stays quiet for a moment, trying to control the inevitable break in his voice when he speaks. When it comes out, it’s wet, and wounded, like blood seeping out the mouth of an injured animal.

‘No, no. It’s ok- my mama, she-’ another small sob. ‘She used to call me that. I have not heard it in a very long time.’

Shane knows he doesn’t need to reply, or to fill the following lull.

He just needs to stand there. Solid and unyielding.

Arms a vice around Ilya’s torso, large hands stroking down the damp skin of his back. Soothing kisses pressed like a comforting brand to his temple, his cheeks, his eyes. Urging the tears to flow because they need to. Loving his man exactly how he needs to be loved.

I get frustrated when people try to cop out of the captain of it all by going "Oh, it won't matter to Shane, it will be a relief to be relieved of that responsibility after what happened with Montreal" or "Oh, Ilya would happily capitulate to Shane if he really wanted the C, it doesn't matter to him" because the thing is,,, yes it does!!! It does matter, to both of them!!! And it's a genuinely juicy point of tension that I think will be the source of drama that will not be easily resolved.

Because,,, from Shane's POV: you LOVED being captain. Specifically, you loved being Montreal's captain. You were respected and revered and you had a place on your team, a strictly defined role, and we all know how much you love strict rules. In the hieracichal system of hockey, you were at the top and goddammit you EARNED that place at the top - it is irrefutable evidence of your work and talent. And now, you've just had to leave your beloved team essentially in disgrace and you have to join a new team where you're not sure where you fit, but it's not going to be at the top. And no matter how much you love the man who's now calling the shots, it's gotta sting to be demoted like that.

As for Ilya's POV: Being captain of the Centaurs was the one thing that gave you even the shakiest sense of purpose in the malaise of change and newness of leaving behind everything you knew in Boston. And goddammit you feel a righteous sense of ownership over this team that's finally excelling, becoming a real franchise competitor, and yes there were a lot of contributing factors but one of those contributions was YOU. You love being captain, getting to control your room. And it does feel like YOUR room now. That sense of belonging, that's not something you're willing to give up, it's something you worked for. And, in a smaller, pettier way, haven't you given up enough by now? You deserve to keep this.

LIKE ‼️‼️ THAT'S FASCINATING!!!! And don't get me STARTED on how this friction in the locker room is probably gonna trickle down in some capacity to hollanovs sex life,,, Shane's genuine desire to submit to Ilya sexually is gonna have a tough time rubbing up against Shane's internalised homophobia,,, because when Shane was captain of the metros, him and Ilya were equals and competitors,,, their even footing soothed Shane's perception of himself and his sense of masculinity even when he was subbing for Ilya,,, now that he's Ilya's 'subordinate' in their work life too, I think there's gonna be an instinctive defensive posturing flare up on Shane's side that's probably gonna lead to even MORE friction in the locker room because subconsciously, Shane feels like he has to make up for the sin of submitting to and enjoying Ilya's control over their sex life, and that's gonna manifest as him bucking control in their professional lives

As for Ilya, his already ingrained need for control that makes him such an adept dom is really gonna struggle in the face of Shane's strange sudden defiance in their professional lives, which is probably gonna make him instinctively tighten his grip on the reins, which is just gonna make Shane's bridling worse. And the cycle will continue until they have a blow up fight about it.

And you know what? I can't wait to watch!!
