[Akuneko Fic Angst Idea] What if #4
What if after the Angel Fight, Arujisama had lost their memories of the butlers?
Idea by @im-peech! Thank you for inspiring me to write a Drabble!
At the very end of the war, the butlers exhausted their power and slammed their weapons down in victory. The angels’ feathers, scattered in the air as if like the first snow, dissolved like a blink of light when they touched the ground.
The church bell rang.
Heavy in their breaths, the butlers carried each other by their arms, while propping themselves with their swords, their faces shined with blood, sweat and tears as they dragged their way towards their precious Arujisama.
Arujisama, with their eyes closed, knees to the ground as if like a prayer, held Muu tightly in their arms.
“A…Arujisama…! We…did it….! It’s…it’s finally finished…!”
“….”
“Arujisama…?”
The butlers carefully patted the debris pieces and dirt off of Arujisama’s head, checking for any potential injuries. Lucas held Arujisama by the wrist and sighed in relief.
“I think Arujisama is currently in shock, but they are alright.”
“W…”
“Arujisama? Are you alright…?”
“…Who is Arujisama…?”
“Arujisama…?”
Arujisama looked back at the butlers with a blank look, they gently placed Muu down on the ground and ruffled his fluffy head.
“I…w…where am I…? Is this a dream?”
The same line Arujisama said when they first came to this world.
“Arujisama…what do you mean by that….? You are our Arujisama…”
“No…I haven’t met you all before…”
“No…no…this can’t be happening…!”
The blood trickled near the corner of the butlers’ eyes. Arujisama reached into their pockets and found an embroidered handkerchief with their name on it.
“Please…take this.” Arujisama’s eyes are puzzled, yet still kind. “I’m not sure why I am here…but from seeing you all…you’ve been through a lot.”
“T-thank you very much…Arujisama…” The butlers bowed and held the handkerchief with trembling hands.
They turned to Lucas for an answer.
“I hypothesized that there is trauma right after the battle with the Angels…I’ll have to do a thorough check up on Arujisama. But first, we need to let Arujisama to rest.”
Lucas was unable to find any injuries.
He checked for both external and internal bleeding, and found nothing.
Arujisama responded normal to his detailed checkups, and felt no aches in their head.
Arujisama was simply confused by what was surrounding them, this world, this place, the ring on their finger, and the butlers.
And of course, the talking Cat.
They have no recollection from the day they first came to this world, until the day they defeated the angels.
It was as if their memories were eaten by something.
Lucas also tested to see if Arujisama had physical memories, perhaps their preference to holding the tea cup, or their preference when holding a utensil, but a different result had occurred.
The butlers then reintroduced themselves after they had a rest. They gathered outside the infirmary, worried if Arujisama was injured greatly, but they didn’t want to intrude on Arujisama’s space.
They were asked in by Lucas.
Hiding their tears behind a smile, they introduced their names one by one.
“Please, call me Berrien.”
“I’m Lono! Your personal chef, Arujisama!”
“I’m Bastien, who vowed to protect you with my life.”
“My name is Haures, Arujisama, you can always depend on me.”
“M…my name is Fennesz…Arujisama, I-it’s a pleasure to meet you…”
“Yo, Arujisama…just call me Boschi.”
“Aw, Arujisama…please remember my name is Ammon, alright?”
…..
After that, the butlers excused themselves from the room to let Arujisama rest and gathered in the dining room. The room was lit up by candles made by Miyaji.
“If there were no major injuries, could it have been a reaction right after the battle?”
“But why would Arujisama forget our memories completely?”
“Perhaps…just like how we have consequences after using our powers…maybe the ring had taken Arujisama’s memories of us…in order for us to claim victory?”
“!”
It would have made sense that a surge of power would flow through them to win against the Intelligent Angels.
Did Arujisama made a deal with the ring?
“Then…what should we do…?”
“We could only let time do its course.”
The butlers decided to recreate the memories together with Arujisama again, in this new peaceful world.
Maybe one day, Arujisama’s memories would come back as they call the butlers’ names gently again.
As long as Arujisama is alive…
It’ll be alright.
Even if the aches in their heart remained and worsened at night, they wondered if they had done the right thing to win the war.
But they lost the Arujisama they knew.

131. Lono is afraid of lightning. This is because he has encountered a life and death situation when he was little.
132. Lono wonders if his canine teeth would make him look childish in front of Arujisama.
133. Lono would often do late night researches on recipes, and he remembers everyone’s preferences, such as Nac liking hard bread and Fennesz preferring soft bread.
134. When Lono was younger, he often finds work that would take him in and he would hide his age and do a lot of physical work, such as carrying stones and heavy materials whenever they are restoring buildings after an angel attack. When he was able to earn money, he could buy meat to cook for his younger siblings.
135. Lono said that when he first came to the palace, his writings were really messy.
136. Lono would often cook food to give out to the children and families who were living on the street. This is why Lono doesn’t really like when people waste food, because there are other people in the world who couldn’t have enough food, but at the same time, he doesn’t want others to force themselves full either, so he said he would work hard to find a way to balance this. Lono is also concerned about the butlers’ health and nutrition, which is why he continued to find a way to help Lato eat more than just parsley, as well as helping Haures to eat fish and vegetables for Flure, Teddy, Beren and Boschi.
137. Lono gets flustered when he’s complimented honestly, his face would be red but he felt really proud. Flure once said that taking combat lessons from Lono is easy to understand and when Flure compliments him, Lono could teach him more.
138. Lono is bad with wearing close buttoned clothes and felt suffocated when he’s wearing a necktie.
139. Lono is usually the one who wakes up earliest and he would make morning tea for Berrien. He can be a messy sleeper, so in the morning, Lono would make sure to make his bed and move his pillow back in place.
140. Lono would go up to a hill where no one is there and shout out his frustrated feelings, such as “AAAAA I LOST AGAIN TODAY~! I’LL DEFINITELY WIN NEXT TIME!”

Lono Fontaine 2025 Birthday Card
That flower is his color
Chapter 1
Mid-July… Lono’s birthday is approaching. This year’s birthday, I have decided to celebrate the butlers’ birthdays with a flower theme.
I would like to give my butlers flowers that bloom this season and are perfect for them.
So I reflected my feelings for Lono…
And decided to give him French marigold flowers
But… just handing over flowers seems a bit boring.
I wanted to give something entwined with French marigolds… That’s what I thought…
I found out that Espoir has a pottery class, so I decided to make another gift there.
【Devil Palace In front of the 1st Floor Butlers’ Room】
- A few days before his birthday -
I had told Lono in advance that I wanted to go out together.
I finished getting ready early and came to the butlers’ room to pick Lono up.
Knock, knock…
………..
Aruji: …No reply.
Lono: Hmmmm ♪
Listening carefully to the door, I can hear Lono’s humming. I quietly opened the door to the room.
Lono: Hmm… Is my hair okay like this…?
After all, I’m going out with Aruji-sama, so I want to look cooler than usual.
W-woah! Aruji-sama!?
Aruji: I’ve come to pick you up.
Lono: I see. Sorry I’m late!
Aruji: Lono looks cool today too!
Lono: Uh… I guess someone was listening to me talking to myself after all…
Aruji: Are you ready to go out?
Lono: Yes! I can go anytime!
By the way, have you decided where we’re going today?
Aruji: I plan to go to a pottery class today.
Lono: Pottery class?
Aruji: Apparently we can experience painting pottery here.
Lono: I see… It sounds fun to be able to make your own tableware.
I was just thinking about getting some new plates… I’d love to try it!
Aruji: Let’s have fun together!
Lono: Yes! I look forward to working with you today!
【Espoir Pottery Class】
- After a short time -
When we arrived at the pottery class, the teacher talked to us.
Pottery class teacher: Welcome. You have a reservation, right?
Please choose your favorite dish from the shelf over there and paint it.
The pattern is already drawn on the piece, so if you proceed like you would with a coloring book, it will turn out beautifully.
Aruji: I understood.
The teacher pointed to the shelf that contained a variety of tableware.
Lono: It’s amazing… There are so many varieties to choose from!
Umm… I’m not sure which one to choose…
For me, it’s definitely this one!
Saying that, Lono picked up the platter.
Lono: Hehe. If I’m going to make something, it’s more worthwhile to make something big!
Aruji: That’s very typical of Lono.
Lono: You think so?
What about you Aruji-sama? Which one will you choose?
Aruji: I’ve already decided.
As we were talking about this… Just then, the teacher brought me the dishes.
Two mugs with a French marigold pattern.
Aruji: I made a reservation in advance.
Lono: Wow… I don’t know what kind of flower it is, but it’s really beautiful.
Aruji: Do you like it?
Lono: Yes, I think it’s a good idea! As expected of you, Aruji-sama!
By the way, what kind of flower is this?
Aruji: It’s a secret for now.
Lono: For now, huh? You’re saying suggestive things. Then, when that time comes… Please let me know in secret.
Oh, but… Why are there two mugs and not one?
Aruji: It’s for two people, me and Lono.
Lono: Eh…?
Aruji: Once it’s finished, I’m thinking of using it together.
Lono: Aruji-sama…
Aruji: This is a birthday present for Lono.
Lono: Eh, for me?
Aruji: I thought you would figure it out anyway…
Lono: Well, to be honest… I thought for a moment that maybe that was the case. I don’t think it’s normal to be celebrated like this… There’s a part of me that hopes that Aruji-sama might be thinking of something.
Aruji: Of course I would think about it.
Lono: Thank you very much! I’m so happy to have matching mugs with you!
Lono: When the mug is finished and it’s time to use it together… I’ll prepare some delicious drinks and food. Hehe. It’s fun to make the mugs and cook the food…
Aruji:
> Please look forward to the finished product.
> I’ll do my best with the painting.
Lono: Yes! I’ll try my best to come up with a recipe too!
So we chatted happily and began our painting process.
- After a while -
Lono: Phew… I’m getting pretty used to painting.
Aruji: You did a good job, Lono.
Lono: Thank you very much. Aruji-sama too, well done! The mug you colored is so beautiful! As expected of Aruji-sama!
Aruji: Lono’s platter is also lovely.
Lono: Hehe, you think so? It was a task I wasn’t used to, so I struggled at first. I’m glad that the results seem to be satisfactory for me.
Um… then…
And so, the two of us… There’s something nice about being passionate about the same thing. I can’t really explain it, but it’s fun!
Aruji: I had fun too.
Lono: Aruji-sama…
Huh…?
Aruji: What’s wrong?
Lono: Aruji-sama. Please stay still for a moment.
Lono wiped his hands with a handkerchief and then reached them to my cheeks.
Aruji: H-huh…?
Then he stroked my cheeks with his thumb… He let go of my face and smiled brightly.
Aruji: L-Lono?
Lono: Okay, it’s gone! There’s no paint on your face anymore!
Aruji: Oh, there was paint on it.
Lono: Yes. But I got it now, so it’s okay!
Saything that, Lono wiped the paint off his fingers.
Aruji: But that…
Lono: Huh? What is it?
Aruji: It’s nothing, thank you.
Lono: No no! You’re welcome!
Lono took the time to wipe his hands with a handkerchief before touching me… In that case, I feel like I should have wiped myself with a handkerchief from the beginning. That’s what I thought, but… I decided not to say it out loud. I didn’t want to point that out and ruin Lono’s smug look. Above all, I myself… I didn’t mind being touched by Lono.
Chapter 2
- A few hours later -
We finished our activity and left the classroom.
Lono: Wheew… All in all, it took quite a while. But, it was all more fun.
Aruji: I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Lono: Yes! Thank you, Aruji-sama, for inviting me today! By the way… When will the painted tableware be completed?
Aruji: By Lono’s birthday.
Lono: I see.
Aruji: Let’s go and pick it up together.
Lono: Yes! If it’s okay with you, I’d be happy to!
…Hehe.
Aruji: What’s wrong?
Lono: Ah… Sorry for suddenly grinning. I’m so happy to think that I can go out with you again. On the day when I go to get the dishes… I’ll go to the room to pick up Aruji-sama. Even after receiving the dishes, I don’t want to go home right away… I want to take a detour and spend as much time alone as possible… I just couldn’t help but think about that…
Aruji: Is that so?
Lono: Yes. Is that a bit selfish? I’m sorry. I got too carried away.
Aruji: I also want to spend time alone with Lonio.
Lono: Eh?
Aruji: It’s Lono’s birthday, so it’s okay, right?
Lono: Aruji-sama… Ishishi… Well, I’ll take you up on your offer.
When he heard my responses… Lono showed me the biggest smile of the day. I wanted to see his smile again and again…
Lono: (Come to think of it, I wonder what kind of flower Aruji-sama was painting… It’s yellow and has a lot of petals…)
【Devil Palace Conservatory】
- On the birthday -
As promised, we went together to pick up the dishes. I was worried about whether it would turn out beautifully, but when I saw the actual product, I was relieved to see that it was better than I thought.
Afterwards, we strolled around the town together… At dusk, we returned to the mansion.
At my suggestion, we are having dinner in the conservatory today. Today’s meal was prepared by the butlers on the first floor. They were considerate enough to make sure Lono was able to relax.
Lono: Wow… That looks like a really delicious dish.
There are a lot of things I like… Oh, we also have your favorite dishes!
Aruji: Thanks to Berrien and Bastien.
Lono: That’s right. I’ll thank them properly later.
Aruji: Well then…
Lono: Hm…? What’s the matter?
I told Lono what I was thinking.
Aruji: Your birthday outfit suits you.
Lono: Aruji-sama… Hehe, thank you very much.
Aruji: Well then, let’s eat before the food gets cold.
Then we enjoyed a leisurely dinner.
- After a short while -
Lono: Fuu… Thank you for the meal.
Aruji: It was delicious.
Lono: Yes, it was super delicious. It must have been really hard to make these… Especially for me…
Then…
Aruji: Then?
Lono: It’s so delicious, it’s almost frustrating.
Aruji: Lono is really ambitious.
Lono: Well, I don’t want to lose to anyone when it comes to cooking.
Saying this, Lono laughed gently and rubbed the bottom of his nose to hide his embarrassment. I know that underneath those gloves there are many scars from intensive training in cooking and swordsmanship. I wanted to tell him how I felt, because he was such a hard worker… With that thought in my mind, I got up from my seat.
Lono: …Aruji-sama?
I picked up the bouquet I had hidden earlier. Of course, what I had prepared was a bouquet of French marigolds.
Aruji: Happy birthday, Lono.
Lono: Eh…?
Lono’s eyes widened… He looks back and forth between my face and the bouquet. With him like that, I continued speaking. The reason I chose these flowers as a present is because they are the same color as Lono’s hair. I thought this was perfect as a gift for Lono. I want to tell him about the appearance and the flower language of this flower.
Aruji: Then, this too…
And then I… I also gave him a mug with a French marigold design.
Aruji: The meaning of this flower is…
Lono: It means… “Keep me close to you always.”, is that right?
Aruji: Did you know about it?
Lono: Actually, on the day you painted it… I got curious and looked into it.
Aruji: I see.
Seeing Lono’s smile gives me energy. His continued effort gives me courage. So I want you to always be on my side from now on. I told Lono straight away.
Lono: !?
Hehe… Thank you so much… Aruji-sama…
Lono smiled shyly and accepted the bouquet.
Lono: This bouquet and mug… And the feelings that Aruji-sama put into them… I’m so happy. I was surprised because I never thought I would be able to get a bouquet.
Aruji: It’s a surprise.
Lono: You’re working too hard for my birthday, Aruji-sama.
Aruji:
>That’s not true.
> I want to do this much.
Lono: Aruji-sama… Seriously, I will treasure it. Thank you very much.
But… A French marigold mug… A mug that I will use every day… The wish “Always be by my side” is put into it… Every time I use the cup, I want to cherish Aruji-sama even more.
Aruji: Lono…
Lono turned directly to me, smiling.
Lono: Now next, it’s my turn to surprise you.
Aruji: Eh?
With that, lono took out a small box he had been hiding. A sweet fragrance was emanating from the box.
Lono: Please open it. It’s a gift from me.
Aruji: Is this a Baumkuchen?
Lono: Of course it’s handmade by me. I hope you like it.
Aruji: It looks so delicious!
Lono: There are various meanings to giving Baumkuchen.
“Longevity”, “Prosperity”, “Gentleness”... and “Unchanging love and relationship”.
I want to continue spending time with you as always. Forever, by Aruji-sama’s side…
Aruji: Lono…
Lono: This is a token of my gratitude for the French marigolds that Aruji-sama gave me.
Aruji: I was surprised… I’m so happy.
Lono: Hehe, I see.
Aruji: Can I try it now?
Lono: Of course! Let’s cut it.
I enjoyed the Baumkechen that Lono had made for me.
Aruji: It’s tasty…!
Lono: Really? Phew… I’m glad… I guess the most nerve-wracking part is waiting for the feedback.
Aruji: Really?
Lono: Before I met you, I had never been so nervous about cooking.
I think it’s a gift for my precious Aruji-sama. I don’t want fail, and I want you to be happy and say “it’s delicious!”.
Aruji: I understand your feelings, Lono.
Lono: Then I’m happy.
Aruji-sama, once again… Thank you so much for all the gifts you gave me for my birthday this year. It’s not just a present… Memories of painting together and the time we spent together like this… Each of them is the best gift for me. We spent a lot of time together this year on my birthday. Even in the future, I hope that days like today will come. Earlier, you said… That you’re getting energy from me… Just like that, I, too, am getting a lot of energy from Aruji-sama. So… let’s support each other in the future.
I will always be by your side. If you wish, we will never be apart.
After Lono finished saying that, he laughed happily.
Lono: I will continue to support you from now on, Aruji-sama.
Aruji: Lono…
Lono: What… Am I trying too hard…?
Aruji: Let me support Lono too.
Lono: I thought you would say that. Seriously, Aruji-sama, you’re too kind. It’s a problem, isn’t it? But it’s because of you that you are my master. I want to be by your side for the rest of my life.
With that, Lono smiled brightly again. That smile is so bright it’s almost sad… It’s a smile that gives energy to anyone who sees it. I wonder how much support this smile has given me. He always shines a light on me, and I want to continue supporting him. With that thought in mind, I laughed. I don’t know if my smile cheered him up though… The man in front of me narrowed his eyes with joy. It was no coincidence. And then, we picked up the matching mugs. In the distant future, we will probably still be using the mugs I made. “Always be by my side.” As long as we both wish that, our smiles will never stop.

【Dragon Water’s City, Shanlong】
- The next day -
Finally, the day has come for us to depart from Shanlong. In the plaza near the port, besides us, Yimin, Haoran, and Haoyu are also gathered here.
Hanamaru: Whew… I guess this is the end of our journey at Shanlong.
Nac: Yes, that’s right. It seems long, but it was short. But I think we had a very great time.
Haoyu: Lato! Lato!
Lato: Oh, Haoyu-san. What’s wrong?
Haoyu: This picture book… I’ll give it to you.
Lato: Me?
Haoyu: Yes! You like this book right? That’s why I’m giving it to you. Here!
Lato: Haoyu-san… Thank you very much.
<I’m glad, Lato.>
Lato: Kufufu… Yes. This picture book has beautiful illustrations and a very charming story. As soon as I get back to the mansion, I’ll read it to Flure.
Muu: (Flure-san, I’m sure he won’t like it…)
Haoran: Hey, Bastien!
Bastien: Huh? What is it, Haoran?
Haoran: Lastly, can I pet Muu?
Bastien: Hm, that’s right… Is that okay, Muu?
Muu: (meat… meat...)
Bastien: …It seems like it’s okay to do it without asking.
Haoran: Hehe! Yayy! Good cat, good cat!
Haoyu: Me too! I want to pet too!
Muu: Purrr….
Muu was petted by Haoran and Haoyu, he let out a pleasant purring sound.
Hanamaru: Hehe… The combination of children and animals is heartwarming.
Crew: We’ll be leaving soon! Is anyone not on board yet?
Lato: Oya, it’s time.
Nac: Lato-san, please hurry up. Aruji-sama, I’m sorry but let’s hurry and get on board!
<U-um!>
Hanamaru: Oh dear, things have suddenly become hectic.
Well, thanks to that… We managed to avoid a sad departure.
Haoran, Haoyu. Take care, okay.
Haoran: Yeah! Hanamaru too!
Haoyu: Bye-bye!
Yimin: Farewell, Hanamaru-san. Regarding the photo of my wife… Please take care of it.
Hanamaru: Yeah, of course. The picture of your wife, I’ll give it to Yuhan. Of course, when I give it to him, I won’t forget to tell him the “condition” as well.
Well then, Yimin. It was good meeting you.
Yimin: Yes, I feel the same. Let’s meet again some time.
Hanamaru: Oh, definitely.
Nac: Hanamaru-san! Please come here quickly! You’ll miss the boat!
Hanamaru: Oh my…! I know, I’m coming!
Yimin, Haoran, Haoyu! Goodbye! The three father and sons… Live healthy!
Splash… splash… splash…
Yimin: Yes. Take care.
……
Yimin: …They’re gone.
Haoran: Hey, father.
Yimin: Ara ara? Haoran, what’s wrong?
Haoran: Is it okay to give the picture of my mother to that person named Yuhan? That photo… It’s father’s precious treasure, right?
Yimin: Fufu… It’s okay, Haoran. Because the photo I gave to Hanamaru… “I didn’t give it to Yuhan-san”.
Haoran: Huh? I gave the photo to you, but did not…?
Haoyu: Hey, is that a riddle? Father, is that a riddle?
Yimin: Fufu… Sorry. It’s not a riddle. But, yes. Think about it for a moment, you two.
“I gave something to someone”... but “I didn’t give it to them…”. What does that mean?
……….
……….
- That night -
After the boat trip… We finally returned to the mansion. We felt a sense of security being back in the mansion after such a long time. Each of us returned to our daily lives.
【Devil’s Palace First Floor Villa】
Yuhan: I see… So that’s what happened in Shanlong. And… the woman in this photo is my cousin… Someone who could have been like a sister to me.
Hanamaru: Yeah, that’s right. This is Yimin’s wife in the photo. “Shinonome Yutao” is your cousin. Hehe, but really, her eyes look just like Yuhan’s.
Yuhan: Hehe… yeah. We certainly look alike. But… if possible… I wanted to meet her in person, not in a photo… It was my fault that your loved ones are dead…
Hanamaru: Yuhan…
Yuhan: I found out that my cousin might be alive… Of course I wanted to talk about old memories… I think I should tell her the truth first… and apologize sincerely… I’ve always thought of that. I might be cut off from her on the spot… I thought it was atonement for what I had done…
Hanamaru: Well, it was unfortunate that she had passed away, but… I think there will be a meeting to discuss this with her in person.
Yuhan: Eh?
Hanamaru: About that photo… Yimin… It is not that “I gave this photo to you.”
Yuhan: That…
Hanamaru: He told me, “I want you to give this photo to Yuhan.” When he handed over the photo, he gave me one condition.
Yuhan: Conditions? What is it?
Hanamaru: He said, “One day, Yuhan will personally come to Shanlong to return that photo.”
Yuhan: …!
Hanamaru: In other words, Yimin… wants you to show him your face when returning that photo. I mean, he actually said so himself. And if you go to Shanlong… you could also visit your cousin’s grave. So just properly convey your feelings there.
Yuhan: Hanamaru-san…
Hanamaru: That photo… Go and return it as soon as possible, okay?
Haoran and Haoyu… Yimin’s children will be very enthusiastic about welcoming you.
Yuhan: Yes, I understood. I will definitely return it. Right… When I go to return this, I want to stop by my hometown, and build a grave for my family and relatives… After the flood, my cousin was saved, I have to tell them… Then they will surely sleep peacefully.
Hanamaru: …Yeah.
Yuhan: Hanamaru-san. This time, thank you very much. I can’t express my gratitude enough…
Hanamaru: Well, it’s not just me. But, I wan~~t you to thank me generously~. Heeey, Yuhan-chan~.
Yuhan: You’re such a person… Do you have to be messing around all the time?
Hanamaru: Hehehe. Then, what should I ask for~?
Yuhan: Haaa. When you’re in front of this person, the sad feelings disappear before you know it.
…Hanamaru-san. I really appreciate it.

【Inn’s Restaurant】
- After a while -
We gathered in the dining hall to hear from Yimin-san.
Yimin: I see… So you all wanted to know if I am… Shinonome Yuhan-san’s relative.
Nac: Y-yes… That’s correct.
Lato: Hmm, if we can hear the answer from Yimin-san’s mouth… That would be quicker. So… What is it? Are you Yuhan-san’s cousin?
Yimin:....
…No. I am not his cousin.
Lato:...!
Nac: T-that…
In front of the shocked Nac and the others….Yimin continues to talk.
Yimin: …I’m sorry that I couldn’t meet your expectations. Actually, the Shinonome surname belongs to my wife.
<Your wife…>
Yimin: Yes, that’s right. I got married and changed my last name to my wife’s. My wife’s name is “Shinonome Yutao”. She is my beloved. She was swept away by the flood into Shanlong. She is my childhood friend.
Nac:...! No way…!
<It was she was washed away by the flood…>
<Could it be that Yutao-san…>
Yimin: Yes… No doubt about it. My lost wife “Shinonome Yutao” is… Shinonome Yuhan’s cousin.
After hearing Yimin’s words, everyone was silent. Yimin was not his cousin. And his cousin Yutao has already passed away... Neither I nor the butlers… could accept the truth…
Yimin: …Let’s continue the story. Hanamaru-san sang the lullaby to Haoyu… “Lullaby of the Water Dragon”. That is a song that was sung in my wife’s hometown.
Hanamaru: So that’s why Yuhan knows the song.
Yimin: Yes… We were both born and raised in the same hometown.
Hanamaru: I see… Yuhan’s cousin was not Yimin…
Bastien: I hoped that one of Yuhan’s relatives might still be alive… I can’t believe she has already passed away.
Muu: (I’m sure Yuhan will be shocked too…)
<Um…>
Yuhan’s relative is deceased. That fact weighed heavily on us.
Nac: …Um, Yimin-san. Can I ask you a few questions about your wife?
<Nac…?>
Yimin: Yes, of course.
Nac: I’m sorry this is a rude question, but… Why didn’t Yutao-san return to her hometown? I heard that she was swept away to Shanlong in the flood and was seriously injured. But she did recover, right? If I were in the same situation as Yutao-san, I would want to go back to my hometown…
Yimin: There were various reasons why she didn’t return to her hometown… First of all, she was too young… She was only 3 years old when she was rescued. Where did she come from? She was unable to provide sufficient information to identify her hometown. Of course, to find her parents… the adults must cooperate. However, I thought that she came from a remote mountainous village. I guess the adults never thought about it. She was swept away from so far away… and what’s more… a child who is only 3 years old managed to survive… It’s nothing but a miracle. It’s something that doesn’t happen normally. And finally…
We were not able to find her hometown.
Bastien: I see…
Yimin: And… No matter how long she waited, her parents didn’t come and pick her up… She was adopted by a doctor and his wife in the city.
<A doctor…?>
Yimin: Yes… He is the doctor who treated her when we rescued her. She suffered severe injuries to the lower half of her face. After undergoing major surgery, she managed to survive. She was taken in by the couple who saved her life. They loved her very much. But even though the couple loved her dearly… they did not change her surname, “Shinonome”. I hope she will one day be reunited with her biological parents… I kept her surname Shinonome.
However, Yutao, who grew up with such kind people, I think she was thinking about their feelings… Even as she grew up and became an adult, she didn’t find her parents who were supposed to be in her hometown.
That’s why my wife did not return to her hometown.
Bastien: Yutao had a new family in Shanlong and didn’t go back home…
Yimin: Yes, that’s right. But she… She hasn’t forgotten about her parents. Yutao respected her parents back home. So when she is married, she said she wanted to keep her surname “Shinonome”.
I respected her choice so I took her surname.
Shinonome Yimin…
Fufu. It has become more familiar to me now than my maiden name. This surname comes from Yutao. My wife left it to me as a treasure.
Saying that, Yimin smiled softly. The gentle tone of his voice is just like Yuhan’s.
Lato: But the way you speak and your manners… are just like Yuhan-san.
Hanamaru: Yes. It’s strange that you are not related to him.
Yimin: That would probably be… My wife’s tone of voice and manners have gradually transferred to me. Yutao and I are familiar with each other after all. We’ve been together since we were kids.
Hanamaru: I see.
Nac: They’re a married couple and they have the same tone of voice. It’s wonderful how close they are. And the fact that you two sound alike means you guys have talked with each other a lot. I’m sure that during the time you two spent together. Yimin-san and Yutao-san… I think you two respect each other a lot.
You and your wife are truly a wonderful couple. I admire you from the bottom of my heart.
Yimin: Fufu, thank you very much. If my wife had heard these words, she would have been very humble and pleased.
After saying that, Yimin… took out a small piece of glass-like object.
Nac: That’s a photograph taken with a dry plate camera, right?
Yimin: Yes. The person in the picture is my beloved wife… “Shinonome Yutao”.
The photo shows a slim woman wearing traditional clothing from the eastern land. The area below the eyes is covered with a thin cloth, so the whole face could not be seen. She has long, narrow eyes that are similar to Yuhan’s. She is very beautiful and exudes a gentle attraction. Her narrow eyes reveal deep affection… She is a very kind and pretty woman.
<A kind-looking person…>
<Looks just like Yuhan…>
Hanamaru: Aa.
If only we could have met alive… I’m sure Yuhan would have been happy too,
Yimin: Fufu. I’m sure my wife would be happy if she had been able to meet you, Yuhan. My wife when she was young, she often said that she wanted a younger sibling. If she could meet Yuhan, she would have adored him like a younger brother.
Yimin looks at the photo of his wife for a while. Then he looked up and turned towards us.
Yimin: Former Sardis’ Major, Shinonome Yuhan-san. I heard about the news that he was executed and his hometown was burned. Shinonome’s hometown is in the mountains, along a river… I knew it must be a clue to my wife’s hometown. But, now that my wife is gone, the major’s execution… and his homeland burned to the ground… Uncovering the truth, I thought it was impossible. But today, thanks to you all, I’ve found the truth.
Yimin bowed deeply to us.
Yimin: Hanamaru-san, [Name]-san, Bastien-san, Nac-san, Lato-san. I am truly grateful to have met you all. I will never forget this kindness. Because I was able to reach my beloved wife’s past.
<Yimin-san…>
Yimin looked up and gave the photo of Yutao to Hanamaru.
Yimin: Hanamaru-san, please… Please give give photo to Yuhan-san.
Hanamaru: Eh…? Oi oi, is it really okay? This photo must be important, right?
Yimin: Yes, I don’t mind. Please let Yuhan-san know. But I;m not going to give that photo forever…There is one condition for me to give you the photo.
<Condition…?>
Yimin: Yes, it is…
Yimin laughed mischievously and explained the “condition”.
Hanamaru: Heh… I see.
Yimin: Well then, Hanamaru-san… Thank you for your help with the photo.
Hanamaru: Yes, no problem. Come rain or shine… I’ll give it to Yuhan.
Yimin: Fufu, yes. I asked you.

【Inn Corridor】
- That night -
After taking a bath, I leisurely walked down the corridor of the inn.
<The breeze feels nice.>
Then, as I was passing by the courtyard… I saw Nac and Hanamaru on the veranda. Haoran and Haoyu were sleeping nearby. I decided to talk to the two.
【Inn’s Porch】
Hanamaru: Hm? Aruji-sama.
Nac: Good evening, Aruji-sama.
<Good evening.>
Nac: Are you enjoying this cool night?
<Well, kind of.>
Nac: Fufu, is that so. Relaxing on the veranda after a bath… It’s so eastern-like and wonderful.
<What are you two doing?>
Hanamaru: Nac and I were playing with Haoran and Haoyu. They got tired and fell asleep. And both of them were on my lap.
Haoran and Haoyu are sleeping, using Hanamaru’s lap as a pillow. It was rather a heartwarming sight.
<That must be tough, Hanamaru.>
<You’re kind, Hanamaru.>
Hanamaru: Seriously, why have they become so attached to me?
Nac: After all, Hanamaru has a lot of experience in raising children. There’s something about him that makes children feel at ease… I’m sure it’s something that has been conveyed to these children.
Hanamaru: Nac. Why don’t you swap my place?
Nac: No, no. It would be a shame to wake them up. Go ahead and keep going.
Hanamaru: Haa… I don’t really know.
Nac: Aruji-sama too. Please take a seat here.
<Thank you.>
Then we chatted for a little while.
- After a while -
Nac: Fufufu. It’s always fun talking to you, Aruji-sama. I have to be careful… I’m afraid I’ll never be able to stop talking like this.
<I’m having fun talking with both of you.>
Hanamaru: I see, I see. If you’re having fun, then we’re happy too. But… you should probably go back to your room soon. If you stay up late, it might affect tomorrow.
<You’re right.>
Hanamaru: Well then, what should I do about the two people on my lap…
Haoyu: Suu…. Guh….
<Ah, Haoyu is crying?>
Hanamaru: Hm? What happened~. I guess he had a scary dream.
Haoyu:...Mom… don’t go…
<...!!>
<A dream of his dead mother…>
Hanamaru: There… there…
Your mom is close by, she is watching over you.
Nac: Hanamaru-san…
Hanamaru: It’s okay… it’s okay… go back to sleep soundly again…
“Fall asleep… fall asleep… fall asleep soundly… The children of the dragon are in a dream… Behind our eyelids, there is a garden flower… The dragon’s tears fill the earth… as dawn breaks, flowers bloom, and the scent of peach blossoms fills the air…”
<That lullaby…>
Hanamaru: It was sung by Yuhan.
Nac: The lyrics are very beautiful.
Hanamaru: Aa, right… I’m sure when Yuhan was a baby, he was soothed by this lullaby.
Clatter..!
Hanamaru: Uo…!?
<Huh!?>
When I turned towards the source of the sounds… There, standing in shock, was Yimin.
<Yimin-san…?>
Nac: What’s the matter?
Haoran: Um… Ummm… Uwa~aaa.
Mm… Father? What’s wrong?
Yimin:...
Haoran: Father……?
Hanamaru: O, oi… What’s wrong, Yimin?
Yimin: Ha-Hanamaru-san… that lullaby… Why do you know that song? “The Water Dragon’s Lullaby.”
Haoyu: Mmm… Ugh…. Hanamaru, sing… more… I… that lullaby… I love it… Mom’s lullaby… Let me hear more of mom’s “Water Dragon’s Lullaby”.

【Inn Restaurant】
- The next morning -
Today we had breakfast at the inn’s restaurant.
Nac: Fuu. Yimin-san. Today’s breakfast was also very delicious.
Yimin: Fufu. That’s an honour. Well then, have a nice day.
Yimin bowed slightly and disappeared into the depth of the inn.
Hanamaru: …Good, he has gone.
Hanamaru confirmed that Yimin was no longer in sight, then turned to us.
Hanamaru: Well then… Shall we start the strategy meeting? Well… We’re wondering if Yimin is Yuhan’s cousin. We need to find out about that though. Nac. You looked into a lot of things yesterday, didn’t you? How is it? Have you got any information about Yimin?
Nac: This is not conclusive information, but… “Isn’t Yimin Yuhan’s cousin?” I have obtained information that supports this theory, so I would like to share it with you all.
<Inclusive information?>
Nac: First of all, before we left… I came across a similar story to what Yuhan said while I was searching.
More than 30 years ago… When Shanlong was hit by a great storm… Major flooding is reported across the region. And in the meantime… The river had overflowed and a child had been swept away from another town. One child had been rescued.
Muu: T-that…!
<That’s definitely Yimin-san.>
Nac: Yes. I think so. Before Yuhan-san was born, his cousin was swept away by the Shanlong river due to a flood. The timing and the story, it fits perfectly with this hypothesis.
Bastien: Hmm, I see. Isn’t Yimin-san definitely Yuhan’s cousin?
Lato: Yes, that’s what I think too.
Hanamaru: Oi oi, that’s some really useful information. Good job, Nac.
Nac: Yes… Thank you very much.
Hanamaru: Hmm? You look like you’re confused.
Nac: Well… Yes…
<Is there something concerned you?>
Nac: Actually… There is more to this story.
Muu: More?
Nac: Yes… “The child rescued from the river had serious injuries on his face.”
<Serious injuries?>
Nac: Yes… The injuries were so horrifying that it made me want to look away… Apparently he needed major surgery on the lower half of his face.
Muu: Ugh… That must be really painful…
Bastien: Wait a sec, if Yimin-san had sustained such an injury… Even on Yimin-san’s face now… Surely there must be scars left?
<It’s true…>
Lato: Hmm, you’re right, Bastien-kun. But Yimin’s face doesn’t have any scars right?
Hanamaru: Oh, that’s right. Yimin’s skin is super smooth. Umm… but, even if there is a contradiction between the absence of scars… I thought so… I think it’s quite likely that Yimin is Yuhan’s cousin…
Nac: That’s correct. I think so.
Hanamaru: Oh well… It looks like further investigation is needed. Okay then, I’ll play with the kids today and deepen my friendship with Yimin. Bastien, Muu. Sorry, but can you help me play with them?
Bastien: Hm? Muu too?
Hanamaru: Oh, they were saying yesterday, “I want to pet a cat.” Sorry, Muu. Can you let yourself be pet today?
Muu: Okay, I understood! It looks like I can finally be of help!
Nac: Well then… I’ll continue my research today on my own.
Lato: In that case… I’m on my own today. That’s right. Aruji-sama, let’s go sightseeing together today.
<Don’t we need to look for clues?>
<Don’t I need to investigate too?>
Lato: It’s okay. You can just look it up while going sightseeing.
<(I wonder if it’s really a research project…)>
Lato: Then, let’s go.
<U-um.>
<Let’s go.>
Lato: Yes.
Nac: Lato-san. I trust you, but… Take care of Aruji-sama and don’t go far away. Be careful not to be late.
Lato: Kufufu, it’s okay.
Thus, I and Lato decided to tour the city together.
【The city of Water Dragons Shanlong】
- After a while -
Lato and I finished preparing to go out and went outside the inn.
Lato: The weather is nice today, so it’s a great day to go out. Aruji-sama, I hope you enjoy your outing with me.
<Um.>
<Let’s get going.>
Lato: Fufufu.
<By the way, somehow…>
Lato: Yes, what’s wrong?
<Have you decided where you want to go sightseeing?>
Lato: Oops… Come to think of it, I haven’t told you where we’re going. Today’s destination is the foot bath.
<Foot bath?>
Lato: Yes, that’s right. I heard from Yimin-san… There is a place in this city where hot springs gut out. Apparently there are foot baths all over the city that use this hot spring water. It’s cool today, even though it’s summer. You probably won’t feel hot even if you soak your feet in hot water. What do you think, Aruji-sama? Shall we try a foot bath?
<That sounds good, I want to go there.>
Lato: Kufufu, I understood. Well then, Aruji-sama, please follow me.
<Um.>
I was taken by Lato to the foot bath.
【Shanlong Foot bath】
- After a few minutes -
Chapu, chapu…
Lato: Kufufu, Aruji-sama, it feels so warm and nice.
<I agree.>
Lato and I were both next to each other, with our feet from the knees down in the footbath. For now… there is no one here but us… Lato casually straightens his knees and kicks the water with his feet. I can hear him humming softly. He seems to be in a good mood today.
Lato: “Fall asleep, fall asleep, fall asleep soundly… The children are in a dream… Behind our eyelids, a garden of flowers…” Fufu. I heard it from Hanamaru-san, and it’s a great song.
<You look happy, Lato.>
Lato: Yes, that’s right. It’s fun… I’m in a really good mood right now. Because I was able to come here with Aruji-sama.
<With me?>
Lato: Yes, that’s right. After hearing about this footbath from Yimin-san… I had decided to take Auji-sama here.
<Why?>
Lato: Kufufu… It’s because…Yimin-sn said that this is a place where families often come. The people of Shanlong… They enjoy this footbath with their partners and children. I think it is like “spending peaceful time together as a family.” I don’t really understand the meaning of “family gatherings”... Probably… It means spending time with loved ones and having fun, right?
Miyaji-sensei, Flure, and Aruji-sama… are like family to me. So I brought Aruji-sama here. The two of us, I wanted to have a good time together. Actually, when I came to this foot bath, I got to soak my feet next to Aruji-sama. Not only the body, but also the mind… It feels like a gentle warmth. Just sitting next to each other with our feet in the bath… For some reason, it’s strangely fun.
<Lato…>
Lato: What about Aruji-sama? Are you enjoying being with me right now?
<Of course.>
<It’s really fun.>
Lato: Kufufu, that’s good to hear. When Aruji-sama is happy… Strange enough, I feel happy too.
Lato kicked the water with his heels as he said that. Chapu… chapu…
Lato: I… as long as I have Aruji-sama, I don’t need anything else. I don’t feel the desire for anything else. I now have a precious family. That alone makes me happy. So, for me… I have no idea how Yuhan-san feels…
<Yuhan’s feelings?>
I was surprised that his name suddenly came up.
Lato: Yeah, that’s right. Yuhan-san, it seems that he lost his family because of the Sardis family. He now has two family members: Hanamaru-san and Teddy-san.
<Two family members…?>
Lato: Yes. They seem to have become very close recently. Like me, Miyaji-sensei, and Flure. I wonder if the three of them are becoming like a family… That’s what I think. But… Why does Yuhan-san… want to know if Yimin-san is his relative? About a human who disappeared before he was even born… Why does he want to know?
<That…>
Lato looked at me with a puzzled expression. I was about to tell him… but… I couldn’t get the words out as if I was stuck.
Lato: Hmm… It seems I have caused you troubles. Aruji-sama. Sorry for asking such a strange question.
<I’m sorry I can’t answer your question.>
Lato: No, that’s fine. Even if Aruji-sama had answered, I probably wouldn’t have understood. And just because I don’t understand Yuhan-san’s point of view… I don’t deny his desire to know if his relative is alive. If that is what he wishes for, I will cooperate with him. Because he was curious about Yimin-san, I was able to talk to Yimin-san. And I was able to come to the footbath with Aruji-sama.
<Lato is kind.>
Lato: Kind, you said?
<That’s right.>
Lato: I see… I’m a kind person to Aruji-sama. If I can take good care of Aruji-sama, for me, it makes me very happy. Kufufu, hey, Aruji-sama. Please continue to be kind to me.
Saying that, Lato looked into my eyes and narrowed his eyes. That smile is by no means just a kind one… His sky-blue eyes were endless and pure.

【Inn’s Restaurant】
- The next morning -
We had breakfast at the inn’s restaurant.
Bastien: Whew, the food at this inn is delicious. And I’m satisfied since I was able to eat a lot in the morning.
Hanamaru: Yeah, that’s right. Thank you, Yimin. All the dishes were tasty. The weather is nice today, and I got to have some delicious food in the morning. It feels great.
Yimin: Fufu, I’m glad to hear that. I believe that Hanamaru-san and the others are going sightseeing together today.
<Yes, that’s right.>
Hanamaru: Ah, it’s the third day since I came to this city… Finally, I’m doing the sightseeing I’ve been longing for. I’ll leave it to Lato and Bastien to play with the kids. Anyway, it seems that Haoyu has grown fond of Lato too.
Yimin: Well…! Today, Lato-san and Bastien-san are…! I’m sorry for having you play with my children even though you came all the way here to relax.
Bastien: I don’t mind.
Lato: Yes, I don’t mind too. Haoyu-san shows me a lot of picture books… It’s fun to play with him.
Yimin: You two… Thank you very much.
Hanamaru: Now then… I’ve finished my breakfast. Aruji-sama, Muu. I guess it’s time to go sightseeing.
Nac: Have a nice trip, Aruji-sama. I hope you have a good time.
<Is Nac not going to go?>
Nac: Well, I have things to do,so I’m going my own way today.
<Things to do…?>
Nac: Fufu, yes. Today I’m going to do a little “searching”.
Bastien: (Aruji-sama, Nac-san is trying to find out information about Yimin-san. Nac-san is good at infiltration… He seems to be planning to gather information that we can’t find out,
<(I see…)>
At that moment… I heard footsteps coming from the back of the corridor.
Haoran: Hanamaru! Lato! Good morning!
Haoyu: Good morning!
Hanamaru: Oh, good morning. You guys are good, you can greet people properly. Well then, Lato, Bastien. I’ll leave the rest to you. Haoran, Haoyu. Let these two play with you today.
Haoran: I got it! Nice to meet you, Bastien!
Bastien: Aa, nice to meet you.
Haoyu: Lato! Lato! Read me this picture book!
Lato: A picture book, huh… I get it. Well then, Bastien-kun. I look forward to working with you.
Bastien: Huh? Why did you give me a picture book?
Lato: Please read it to me. Hm, I’m not in the mood to read today. So today… I’m going to enjoy the picture book with Haoyu-san. Haoran-san too, let’s listen together.
Haoran: Okay!
Bastien: Haaa… Reading aloud… I’m not sure I’m good at that.
Lato: I’m looking forward to it, Bastien-kun.
Hanamaru: Bastien will read it to you huh. I’m a little curious how it’ll go, but we don’t have much time… Aruji-sama, Muu, let's go sightseeing!
<Um.>
<Let’s go.>
Bastien: Aruji-sama. Please take care.
Lato: Have a fun and nice trip. See you later.
<Good bye, you two.>
Then, I left the inn with Hanamaru and Muu.
【Inn Porch】
- After a while -
Haoran: Haaaa…
Haoyu: Zzz… Zzz…
Bastien: Hmm, maybe they got tired from playing and fell asleep.
Lato: Yes. They seem to be sleeping soundly. Still… I don’t understand what a child is thinking. Asked for a picture book to be read, then suddenly wanted to play tag, then play hide and seek. Just when you think they’re running at full speed, they fall asleep as if his strings have been cut. Kufufu, I can’t read their mind, it’s pretty fun.
Bastien: Aa, that’s right. (From my point of view… I can’t read your mind either, Lato-san.)
Lato: Hm? Bastien-kun, what’s wrong?
Bastien: No, it’s nothing… By the way, Lato-san, I’ve been wondering for a long time. Why does Lato-san play with these children?
Lato: Why, you ask?
Bastien: Well… I hope you don’t mind… I think that Lato-san… I think he’s someone who only does things that he likes. And Lato-san… I don’t think he’s interested in playing with kids. Lato-san, who loves picture books, becomes interested in Haoyu’s picture books. I can still understand you were being there for them. But in the end, why did you even go along with playing tag like this? To be honest, I don’t understand.
Lato: Kufufu. The answer is very simple. Because Miyaji-sensei told me to be kind to children. He says that the environment makes the person. “From an early age, you have to be close to the children. By being honest with them, children develop their hearts and become kinder adults.” These words are one of things that Miyaji-sensei always tells me. I want to respect Miyaji-sensei’s words. Miyaji-sensei is a trustworthy person after all… If Miyaji-sensei asks me to be kind to the children, I will abide by that request.
Bastien: I see. So that’s why.
Lato: To be honest… I’m not particularly interested in these kids. We’re completely strangers to begin with. Honestly, I don’t really care. However, if these children intentionally harm Aruji-sama, if someone important to me is hurt. I will definitely show no mercy.
Bastien: I’ll do everything in my power to stop that.
Lato: Oh? Why?
Bastien: Children make mistakes.
It’s the environment that makes the children commit crimes. You should give people a chance to try again.
Lato: Hmm… I see. “The environment makes the person…” This is the same as what Miyaji-sensei said. But if that actually happened… I don’t think I can stay calm… Bastien-kun, please take good care of these kids.
Bastien: Hmm… I don’t want to fight with Lato-san for that reason…
Haoyu: Uu… Umm…. Uwaaa~....
What? What are you two doing?
Bastien: Oh, you’re awake.
Haoyu: I heard you talking and woke up.
Bastien: Is that so? My bad.
Haoyu: What were you two talking about?
Bastien: Nothing. Just small talk.
Haoran: Umm~.... Uwaa~...
Lato: Oh, it looks like Haoran has woken up too.
Haoran: Lato, Bastien. Good morning…
Lato: Kufufu, good morning.
Haoyu: Hey hey, what should we play next?
Lato: Oya. Just when I thought you had just woken up, you immediately started talking about playing.
Haoyu: I want to play water bullets!
Bastien: Do you want to splash around with the water? Hm… It’s been a long time since I last played with water bullets…
Lato: That sounds good. It’s hot and humid today, so it seems like water activities would feel good.
Bastien: Sure. If you’re okay, I will be your opponent.
Haoran: Ehehe, yay! I love Bastien!
Haoyu: I like Lato too!
Bastien: Fu…
Lato: Kufufu…

【Inn Enclosure】
- The next day -
I was sitting on the veranda of the inn, looking out at the courtyard. In the courtyard, Yimin’s children are playing with Hanamaru. Yesterday, he was playing with the kids. Today, Hanamaru was supposed to go sightseeing with me, but… The children had really taken a liking to him. Today, he ended up playing with them again. I felt bad leaving him at the inn like that. I cancelled my sightseeing schedule and decided to stay at the inn with Hanamaru.
Hanamaru: Here, there, there! Let’s go!
Haoran: Ahaha! It’s cold!!
Haoyu: It’s cold!
The three of them carry water guns made of bamboo called water bullets… They’re playing while getting soaked.
Hanamaru: Nehehehe! There, run away!
Haoran: We’re not just running away! We will fight back!
Haoyu: Ah!
At that moment, Haoyu’s water bullets… were pointed in my direction.
<Eh?>
Hanamaru: Oops!
Splash! I thought I’d get wet, so I braced myself, but… Hanamaru stepped forward and shielded me.
Hanamaru: Whew… That was close. Hey, Haoyu… You shouldn’t target people who don’t have water bullets, right?
Haoyu: Uu… I’m sorry…
At that time, Yimin’s voice came from the back of the inn.
Yimin: Haoran, Haoyu! Where are you? It’s almost time to go to calligraphy class!
Hanamaru: Oops. It looks like this isn’t the time to play. I’ll take care of the water bullets for you two. Go to Yimin’s place.
Haoyu: Okay!
Haoran: Thank you, Hanamaru! I’m off!
The children replied cheerfully and disappeared into the depths of the inn.
Hanamaru: Phew, they’re gone.
Hanamaru sat on the veranda while squeezing the water out of his clothes.
Hanamaru: Seriously, I never thought I’d be playing water bullets at this age. Now my clothes and hair are soaked. As a result, my clothes and hair are soaked.
<Thank you for covering for me earlier.>
Hanamaru: It’s fine. Thanks for protecting my Lord… I have become a worthy man. Well, but, it’s a bit gross to have wet clothes… Sorry, Aruji-sama, but… Can I take off my jacket?
<Huh?>
Hanamaru: Those two hit me with so many water splashes that my back is soaked. It’s summer now, so I don’t think I’ll catch a cold, but I feel uncomfortable wearing wet clothes.
<If that’s the case…>
<Well, I guess…>
Hanamaru: Thank you, Aruji-sama. Well then, I’ll take it off.
Saying that, Hanamaru stood up and quickly took off his jacket. On his back, where the water is dripping, there is a large dragon tattoo. The dragon carved into Hanamaru’s broad back is… fearsome yet beautiful. Perhaps Hanamaru noticed my gaze… He turned around and sat next to me again.
Hanamaru: Oops, what’s wrong, Hanamaru? Could it be… You are mesmerized by my back?
<W-well….>
It’s true that I had been paying attention to it, so I was at a loss as to how to respond.
Hanamaru: Hehe… Just kidding. This tattoo… It’s not something I’m really proud of…
<Huh?>
Hanamaru was still smiling… and he lowered his gaze slightly.
Hanamaru: Hey, Aruji-sama. Do you know? It is part of the eastern land. The dragon is a divine beast that protects children. You see… The lullaby I sang at the mansion also featured dragon, right?
“Fall asleep, fall asleep, fall asleep soundly… The children of the dragon are in a dream… Behind your eyelids, there is a flower garden.” Hehehe, it really makes me laugh. My back was not able to protect the children from the angels… Of all things, there’s a dragon carved into it.
<Hanamaru…>
Hanamaru: Haa… Sorry, Aruji-sama. Suddenly being told a serious story… You were surprised, weren’t you?
Me too. I’m surprised I suddenly brought this up. I’m going to retract this dragon now, so forget what I said earlier.
Hanamaru reached for his still damped jacket after saying that. I grabbed his hand and stopped him as he was about to get changed.
<Hanamaru, wait.>
Hanamaru: Hm? What’s wrong?
<Hanamaru’s back, it’s cool.>
Hanamaru: Aruji-sama… Fuu… Thank you. If the proud Aruji-sama said that, it makes me feel confident too. Nehehehe. If you think my back is cool, would you like to take a closer look?
<Y-yes?>
<...Huh, why is that?>
Hanamaru: What? That’s not enough? Jeez, it can’t be helped huh, Aruji-sama. Here you go. You can touch the tattoo on my back too. This time, it’s special.
<N-no no no…!>
<Hanamaru, you’re getting too cocky…!>
Hanamaru: What. Just kidding, just kidding~. I’m sorry for teasing. Please forgive me.
<Seriously…>
Hanamaru: After all, Aruji-sama is worth teasing~. I love seeing Aruji-sama’s reactions. Fuu… Okay, enough joking around. Aruji-sama, it’s about time we went to the restaurant. The sun is already high in the sky… If we go to the restaurant, I’m sure we can get some delicious food.
<You’re right.>
<I’m getting hungry.>
Hanamaru: I’ll clean this up quickly. Please wait for me.
Saying that, Hanamaru put on his jacket and quickly put away the water guns.
Hanamaru: I kept you waiting. Well then, shall we get going?
With that, Hanamaru started walking down the side, leading me along the way. A great dragon was hiding in his back, broad and powerful…

【Shanlong Inn’s Lodging】
- That night -
After we returned to the inn, we all had dinner. Yimin was sitting in the corner, he was pouring Hanamaru a drink and joining in the conversation.
Yimin: Hanamaru-san, Lato-san, thank you for playing with my sons today.
Hanamaru: No need to thank us. We had fun playing with those guys too.
Lato: Yes, that’s right. Haoyu-san introduced me to some wonderful picture books. I really enjoyed it.
Yimin: Fufu… My sons are quite mischievous, but I’m glad that you two like them.
But after spending the whole day playing with those kids, aren’t you both tired? Ah, that’s right…!
Why not try a “forest bath” to soothe your body and mind?
Bastien: A forest bath?
Yimin: In the east, west, north, and south of this city… There are four wooden baths in each direction. We, the city’s residents, bathe in the pure water of these bathing places. It helps to relieve tension and heals the body and mind. If you come to Shanlong for sightseeing, please try it.
Lato: A relaxing bath… Is it something like a cold bath? Kufufu… If so, I’d be interested. Drying wet hair is a pain, but… Soaking your body in water feels good.
Yimin: Fufu, yes. It really does feel nice. Me too, when my wife was alive… we used to go to the forest bathing places as a family.
Hanamaru: By the way, in your letter… It said, “I’m raising my children alone.”
Yimin: Yes, that’s right. My wife was… murdered.
Nac: …!! She was murdered…
Hearing Yimin’s shocking confession… Everyone stopped eating.
Yimin: We adopted the abandoned children Haoran and Haoyu… A few years later, my wife was killed by a thief while out shopping alone. This city is often visited by tourists. At first glance, it appears to be prosperous, but… It í a city where the gap between the rich and the poor is huge among its residents. If there are people like us who have a good place to live and live a good life… Some people don’t even have a home, some are struggling to survive today.
…
However, that doesn’t mean it’s okay to kill my wife… My wife was killed by bandits born out of poverty.
<That…>
Nac:.......
Yimin: Oh, but… Don’t worry too much. Because of my wife’s case, the city’s guards have been put in. There haven't been any such incidents in the last few years. I hope you have a safe and comfortable stay here. Hmm… I’m sorry for talking about such a heavy topic.
Hanamaru: Sorry for bringing up such a painful memory…
Yimin: No, Hanamaru-san doesn’t need to apologize. And now I have come to terms with my wife’s death. I have my sons to protect. I have to do what I can for those children… I have to do it for my wife…
Hanamaru: I see. You too, Yimin… You were living with the despair of losing your family.
Yimin: That means… Hanamaru-san, you too…
Hanamaru: No… It wasn’t about my wife that I lost. Well, uh… and I haven’t gotten married. Anyway, Yimin… Tell me more about yourself. I’ve been raising children in the church all my life… I’ve never had what you’d call “dad friends.” I wanted to talk about child-rearing just once, just between two guys…
Yimin: Hanamaru-san…
Fufu, I understood. If you don’t mind my story, I’ll tell you as much as I want.
Hanamaru: Hehe, I’m glad. Okay then, Yimin. Can I have another drink? I’ll listen to your story as a drinking snack.
Saying that, Hanamaru raised his sake cup… Yimin’s face lit up… That expression just now… They looked so happy that it’s hard to believe they were talking about their lost family. The butlers, who had stopped eating, saw that scene, and they finally resumed their meals. However… one butler still stopped what he was doing.
Nac:.......
<Nac…?>
Nac: Y-yes… What is it, Aruji-sama?
Nac’s voice felt somewhat weak and unwell…
<You seem a bit dazed, are you okay?>
Nac: Oops, sorry… I was a bit off-putting. A little… Maybe I’m a little tired from the voyage. But… It’s nothing serious, so don’t worry.
<Don’t push yourself, okay.>
Nac: Fufu, yes. Thanks for your concern.
Hanamaru:....
【Inn Nac’s Room】
- After a while -
Creak
Nac: Phew… The dinner was delicious, but I couldn’t eat much… I can’t believe that Yimin-san’s wife was killed by bandits. If I had heard a story like that… I wouldn't be able to eat anything. Because I am… the same as that thief… Because I am a man who has lived a life trampling on others’ happiness. How can I… Would you still like to have dinner with me, Yimin-san? …I have to be aware of this once again. I am a sinful, fierce, bloody, corrupted being.
Haa…
Knock, knock,...
Nac: Oya?
Creak…
Hanamaru: Yo, Nac. I’m coming in.
Nac: Hanamaru-san…? Is there something I can help you with?
Hanamaru: Yeah… I was just wondering how you were.
Nac: How am I doing…?
Hanamaru: When you heard that Yimin’s wife had been killed, you were obviously upset.
Nac:....!!
Hanamaru: After that, I heard that his wife has been slashed… I heard about his feelings for the children left behind… His eyes were getting cloudier and cloudier… I guess he thought he was hiding it, but…
Nac:.....
Hanamaru: Well… That… I don’t want to ask you about your past or your circumstances here… So don’t worry about that. Even though we’re friends, we shouldn’t pry into others’ affairs more than necessary.
Nac: Hanamaru-san… Thank you for your concern.
Hanamaru: Not really. I just don’t do it because I don’t want to be the one to do it.
Nac:.....
Hanamaru:....
Nac: Um, is it okay if we don’t go back to the dining hall? I’ll rest here for a bit and then I’ll be back… Hanamaru-san too…
Hanamaru: Yeah. Can’t I be here?
Nac: No, it doesn’t mean that…
Hanamaru: Then let me roll around the floor here for a bit.
Nac: Eh? On the floor?
Hanamaru: Okay then. Whew. Rolling around is the best. Eating delicious food and relaxing… I’m the happiest person in the world right now. Hehe. You can’t do something like this in front of Aruji-sama, right?
Nac: Yes. As a butler, that would never be tolerated.
Hanamaru: Wow, the stars are so beautiful, aren’t they. And… The sound of flowing water makes me feel nice. As expected of the City of Water Dragon. Come on, Nac. Sit next to me. How long are you going to stand there?
Nac: Oh dear… This isn’t your room.
Hanamaru: I don’t care about the details.
Nac: I understand. Well, excuse me, neighbor.
Hanamaru:.......
Nac:.......
Indeed, just by doing this… it is soothing to the soul.
Hanamaru: Right?
Nac: Yes….
Hanamaru: Hey, Nac.
Nac: Yes?
Hanamaru: Don’t push yourself too hard.
Nac:….! What is this all of a sudden?
Hanamaru: It’s weird to say this to you, who has lived hundreds of years longer than me. If you don’t mind, I’ll listen to your story… Well. I don’t know if it will be of any use to you, Nac, if you tell me. You’re carrying too much weight on your own, aren’t you?
Nac: Hanamaru-san… Thank you very much. I’m really happy to hear that.
Hanamaru: Ah… That reaction… I don’t think you’ll tell me.
Nac: …!! No, that is… It’s not that I don’t want to talk about it because you’re Hanamaru-san. It’s just that… To myself… I just don’t have the courage to speak… I feel like if I talk, everything will change.
Hanamaru:....
Is that …so. That’s right. It’s hard to be brave. Sorry. Let's stop talking about this.
Nac: Eh?
Hanamaru: Even though we’ve come to a beautiful city with amazing scenery… It’s a shame if it’s all about dark stories, isn’t it? Right?
Nac: Well…
Hanamaru: Let’s stop talking about depressed things. Let’s talk about something brighter and funnier.
Nac: Hanamaru-san… Fufu, that’s right. Let’s do that.
Hanamaru: Well then, let’s get ready.
Nac: Ready…?
Knock… knock… knock…
Creak…
Hanamaru: Nehehehe. I brought some alcohol and left them outside the door. I got some delicious local sake from Yimin. Here, Nac too.
Nac: No no, I…
Hanamaru: It’s not like you can’t drink it, right?
Nac: Yes, I can drink, but… I get drunk quickly. It’s something I can’t normally imagine… It seems I might become a bolder person…
Hanamaru: Apparently…? You don’t remember?
Nac: Yes… When you get drunk, you lose your memory, right?
Hanamaru: Then that’s perfect. Let’s drink today and forget everything.
Nac: But I have to take care of Aruji-sama.
Hanamaru: Well, Bastien told me to leave it to him, so it’s fine. No need to worry. Look, look. Let’s have a drink together tonight. Of course, if you really don’t want to, I won’t force you.
Nac:.......
Hanamaru: Let’s change the mood.
Nac: …You’re right. Then, just a little bit.
Hanamaru: Yes, here you go. Here, this is for Nac.
Nac: Thank you very much. Ugh, it smells like alcohol. I think I’m going to get drunk.
Hanamaru: Then, before you get drunk… Here, cheers.
Nac: Cheers. Fufu…

- After a while -
【Water Dragon’s City Shanlong】
Leaving Hanamaru and Lato, we went outside the inn.
Nac: Phew… Finally, we are able to get outside. To concentrate on gathering information about Yimin… Let’s quickly clear up the request.
<I agree.>
Muu: By the way, Nac… Is it okay to leave Hanamaru-san and Lato-san?
Nac: Yes, it’s okay. Those two will remain at the inn and play with Yimin-san’s children. The two are popular with children… Yimin-san would also trust us… That way, we can talk to him in depth. Collecting information will be easier. For that sake, Hanamaru-san and Lato-san will play with the children with all their might today.
Bastien: I see… So that’s the plan you were thinking of, Nac-san.
<As expected of Nac.>
Nac: Fufu, thank you very much.
Muu: Umm, so… what are we going to do now?
Nac: Yes, first of all, we are going to deliver the requested item that has been entrusted by the Grobanner family. Luckily, the delivery address is nearby, so the job should be done quickly. And after that, let’s go sightseeing in the Shanlong city.
<Huh? Sightseeing?>
Bastien: Hm? Once the quest is done, do we have to go back to the inn right away? If we want to gather information about Yimin-san… I think it would be better if we stayed at the inn with Hanamaru.
Nac: No, actually, it’s best not to go back to the inn right away.
Muu: Huh, why is it?
Nac: Because I was afraid that Yimin-san might get suspicious.
<It arouses suspicion?>
Nac: Yes, that’s right. We said that we came to Shanlong for sightseeing after word. And yet, everyone stayed at the inn… If we don’t do much sightseeing, it will arouse sightseeing. If Yimin-san becomes suspicious, it will be difficult to gather information.
In order to achieve our goal of finding out his identity… After the request, let’s enjoy sightseeing. As I told you on the ship… We have 9 days to stay here. Of course, I am also investigating Yimin-san. I want the Aruji-sama to enjoy this journey to the fullest and take your time to let your hair down.
<We can go sightseeing for 9 days.>
<It looks like I can take it easy.>
Bastien: Sightseeing with Aruji-sama, it looks like it’s going to be a fun trip. It’s not often that we get to do something like sightseeing in the eastern land with the Aruji-sama.
Nac: Shanlong is a famous scenic spot, so there are many things to explore.
<I’m looking forward to it!>
<I wonder what kind of places there are.>
Muu: I’m starting to look forward to it too! Aruji-sama, where should we go today?
Nac: Muu, we can go sightseeing after we have finished the request, alright?
Muu: Y-yes, that’s right! I ended up getting too excited.
Bastien: So, Nac-san… Where do we deliver the requested item?
Nac: Oh, that’s right…
With Nac as our guide, we headed off to deliver the requested item.
【Shanlong Restaurant】
- After a while -
We quickly finished the request and went to a restaurant to have lunch. The restaurant was crowded… I sat at the same table as the butlers. The table was laid out with a variety of dishes from the eastern land, mostly ordered by Bastien.
Bastien: Munch… munch… Fuu… Just as I had heard, Shanlong’s food is delicious… Fried river fish, salty river shrimps… crabs and crab meat salad… all of these dishes are not available in Espoir.
Muu: Yes! It’s a taste I’m not used to, but it’s very tasty!
Nac: Fufu… This cucumber flower dish is also delicious… I’m a little concerned about the meat in it…
Bastien: Oh, now that I think about it… Nac-san doesn’t like meat. In that case, I’ll eat the meat. Just take the meat out of the dish and put it on my plate.
Nac: Bastien, thank you.
Nac looked apologetic. He put the delicious meat on Bastien’s plate.
Muu: Umm. If Lono saw this, he would be angry…
<It’s true…>
Bastien: Yeah, he is careful about what he likes and dislikes when it comes to food. If only Lono were here… he would have said, “If you leave the food you don’t like, your nutrition will be unbalanced!”
Nac: Yes. I’m sure he would say that. Actually, it’s just as Lono said… I feel embarrassed about being this old and still having likes and dislikes… It seems like it will be a long time before I can eat meat again.
Bastien: Well then, for now… What about having some dried river fish instead of meat? That way, Nac-san’s nutrition won’t be unevenly distributed. I got some meat from Nac-san in exchange for some fried river fish.
Nac: Oya, are you sure? Not only did you have the meat, but you also got me fried chicken.
Bastien: Oh I don’t mind. Rather, I want Nac-san to know how delicious this chicken is…
Nac: I see… Well, I’ll take up your offer.
Nac ate one of Bastien’s fried chicken.
Nac: Munch… munch…
Woah, this is…! The crunchy batter and juicy white meat are superb!
Bastien: Fuu, is that right?
Nac: Yes. This is a dish I’d love Lono-kun make.
<Is it that delicious?>
Bastien: Hm? Are you also interested in trying this fried chicken, Aruji-sama? Then you should try it.
<Is it okay?>
Bastien: Of course. I want the Aruji-sama to experience this deliciousness.
<Then, I’ll have this.>
<Thank you.>
I followed Bastien’s urging and tried a bite of the fried chicken. The crunchy texture of the batter was tasty, and the delicious flavor of the thick white meat spread in my mouth. It’s certainly delicious.
<I-it’s really tasty.>
Bastien: I'm glad you seem to like it. But still, you ate your food with gusto, Aruji-sama.
<I-is that so?>
Bastien: Fuu… Yeah, you look very satisfied. When I like something, and Aruji-sama does too… It feels nice.
<U-umm…>
Bastien looked at my face and narrowed his eyes gently. I got nervous as he stared at me.
Nac: Fufu… You’ve really changed, Bastien. I see more smiles now compared to before Aruji-sama came.
Bastien: Hmm… I wonder how many people I’ve heard that story from…
Nac: Yes. Especially when you talk to Aruji-sama… I can tell how much you care about Aruji-sama.
Bastien: I see… Indeed, when I’m talking to Aruji-sama, I feel calmer… Maybe that’s why I can’t help but smile.
Muu: Bastien-san, I’m surprised you can say that without feeling embarrassed. If it were Lono-san or Flure-san, they would have been shaken by what Nac-san said.
Bastien: It’s a fact. I don’t think there’s anything to be upset about.
Nac: Bastien who had avoided people and their gentleness… I never thought he would cherish someone this much.
Nac:...
Nac: People can change if they want to. Fufu, looking at Bastien-kun, I feel like my heart has become a little lighter.
Muu: Nac-san?
Bastien: What do you mean?
Nac: Oops… Sorry for suddenly saying something strange. Actually, I too… There is something about myself that I want to change… But I haven’t been able to change it for hundreds of years… Deep down, there was a part of me that felt like giving up.
<Nac…>
Nac: …If I had a pure heart, as straightforward as Bastien’s… Perhaps things would have been different.
Bastien: Hm… I’m pure and straightforward… Nac-san is also pure and straightforward enough though. There are few people who can express their feelings for Aruji-sama as directly as Nac-san. Nac-san often uses grand expressions, but… his words convey his true feelings and kindness.
The feelings that he cherishes for Aruji-sama, Nac-san is able to express them without hiding them. I think he’s much a purer and better person than me.
Nac: Bastien-kun… You think so…? I don’t think I’m a pure human being. Sorry. Let’s leave it at that. Our delicious meal will get cold. Aruji-sama, I’m sorry for talking so long.
<No, it’s not.>
<I don’t mind.>
Nac: Come on, Aruji-sama, please try this dish too.
<Thank you.>
Then, Nac, as usual, livened up the conversation. “I don’t think I’m a pure person.” I was a little concerned by his statement… I think that’s a topic that we don’t really want to talk about… I have decided to refrain from further investigation.

【Inn’s Room】
- After a while -
Luckily, we were the only guests at the inn. Yimin-san was happy to let us stay at his inn.
Then we put our luggage in the room. Thanks to Yimin-san’s kindness, we were treated to some light snacks. At first, everyone was nervous, but after introducing ourselves and as the conversation continued, the atmosphere became relaxed…
Bastien: Munch… munch… Phew… These dumplings are not too sweet and are tasty.
Lato: Oya. It’s round and has a cute shape. It kind of reminds me of Flure’s cheeks. I just want to poke him.
Yimin: Fufu, I’m glad you liked it.
<Thank you for treating us well.>
Yimin: No, no. This is just a little token of my hospitality, but please enjoy and relax.
Muu: Munch… munch… (Hehe, the dish is so delicious! I want to thank the person who made it!)
<(Okay, I will do it for you.)>
Muu: (Thank you, Aruji-sama!)
Yimin was kind enough to make Muu a dish using cat-eatable ingredients. With Yimin here, Muu is unable to speak. Perhaps because the food is delicious, he doesn’t seem to feel cramped.
Hanamaru: Oh I’m sorry… I suddenly showed up with a large group. Due to work circumstances… I had to come with this group.
Yimin: No, it’s fine. Actually I’m happy that there are more people to treat. There are not many tourists in Shanlong at this time of the year… The inn was also quiet.
By the way… You said that you came to this city for work. Did you quit your job at the church and take up another job?
Hanamaru: Oh… The kids from the church have already left their nest. Now I’m having fun working with these guys. Well, to be honest… The reason I came to this city is… 10% for work and 90% for sightseeing.
Yimin: Fufu… I’m relieved to hear that your children have grown up healthy. I’ll bring more tea. Please wait a moment.
When Yimin left… Hanamaru sighed in relief.
Hanamaru: Phew… I didn’t have to talk about my job…
Nac: Seriously… I was getting a bit nervous listening to that. If Yimin-san knew we were Devil Butlers… He might get suspicious. Hanamaru-san, until we find out if Yimin-san is related to Yuhan-san… Be careful of what you say and do not do so as not to damage trust.
Hanamaru: I know it. Don’t talk like that, like Yuhan. But… well… “Sounds like something Yuhan would say…”
Hanamaru:...
<Hanamaru?>
Hanamaru: …Hey, everyone. Honestly, what do you think of Yimin? Do you think he is Yuhan’s cousin? Honestly, I think they are definitely cousins. As Yuhan said, I didn’t think their eyes looked similar… Well, you see… the way he speaks… is totally like Yuhan.
<Um.>
<He sounds so much like Yuhan.>
Bastien: That’s right. He’s so much like Yuhan.
Nac: There’s no denying it. That gentle way of speaking… It’s so familiar… Mainly in the mansion’s villa.
Muu: I also think that Yimin’s way of speaking… is so much like Yuhan.
Lato: Yes. The voice itself is not similar, but the choice of words and intonation are similar.
Hanamaru: Right? I guess everyone thinks so. Let’s assume that Yimin is related to Yuhan… We’d better gather some information. While staying in this city… I need to find more reliable information.
As we were talking… From the back of the inn, we heard the sound of footsteps approaching.
A tall child: Ah, it’s true! He truly exists.
A slightly shorter child: Is that Hanamaru over there? That’s right! It’s true!
Hanamaru: Hm?
Two children ran from the dining room and jumped onto Hanamaru’s back.
Hanamaru: Guh!?
The taller child: My father picked up the bottle mail guy!
The slightly shorter child: His hair is curly and fluffy! He looks just like the picture in the bottle mail!
Hanamaru: Ouch, that hurts! My hair is falling out!
The taller child: Hey Hanamaru! Play with me in the place of my dad!
The shorter child: Hey Hanamaru! Read me a picture book in the place of my dad!
Lato: A picture book?
While the children were holding onto Hanamaru, Yimin came rushing over in a panic!
Yimin: Haoran! Haoyu! What are you doing to my guest?!
The taller child: Oh no! Father…!
The shorter child: Father…!
Yimin came to Hanamaru’s place and tore the two children’s grasp from Hanamaru.
Hanamaru: Haa… haa… I thought I was going bald…
Yimin: Hanamaru-san, I’m sorry…! My children must have caused you so much trouble…!
Haoran! Haoyu! You two should apologize!
Haoran: Ugh… Hanamaru… I’m sorry…
Haoyu: Hanamaru… Sorry for pulling your hair…
Yimin: Don’t call customers by their first names, it’s rude!
Hanamaru: It’s okay, it’s okay! Even if you just call me by my first name, I’m used to this kind of thing. Then, Yimin… Are those naughty boys your sons?
Yimin: Ah, yes… that’s right. The first child is called Haoran and the second child is called Haoyu.
Haoran: I’m Haoran! I’m 6 years old!
Haoyu: I’m Haoyu! I’m 5 years old!!
Nac: Fufu. They’re such lively kids. When they grow up, they will be big shots when they grow up.
Yimin: I’m sorry for causing you troubles… Actually, these kids were shy in the past. But.. Maybe it’s because I’m so busy with work that I didn’t pay them any attention. Now, when they see an adult who likes children, they often beg them to play with them.
<I see.>
Nac: Well, so… you two are lonely because Yimin-san doesn’t pay you any attention.
Haoran: If you understand that, come and play with me!
Haoyu: Read a picture book!
Yimin: You two stop messing around! I’ll play with you after work!
Hanamaru: Ooh… You two have plenty of energy huh. Well, if you say so, I have no choice. Would you like to play with me?
Haoran: Yay! I love Hanamaru!
Haoyu: I like you too! So read me a picture book!
Hanamaru: Hey, it’s heavy! Stop it, don’t jump on my back!
Yimin tried to pull the children away, but they both clung to Hanamaru and refused to let go.
Bastien: Hmm… they are very energetic kids.
Nac: Yes, even though Hanamaru-san loves children… It seems difficult for two to play at the same time. But if we could be playmates for the children here… If we can gain the trust of their parent, Yimin, it will be easier to get information. But I don’t think Bastien and I could keep up with all these energetic kids. Hmm… What should I do?
Lato: I see, then… I’ll play with them. Is that okay, Nac-kun?
Nac: A-as expected of Lato-san… I was only whispering to myself but you heard me? Well… Then, Lato-san. I feel bad leaving the kids behind when they’re playing. For now, could you be their playmate for today? I and Bastien… along with Aruji-sama and Muu… we have a request. We’ll go complete the request.
Lato: Fufu… I got it.
Bastien: Hmm, I don’t really understand the situation… But if what’s what you say, Nac-san, I will follow your orders. Aruji-sama, Muu, let’s leave the inn.
<I understood.>
I, too, like Bastien… The situation was hard to grasp. It seems that Nac will take us outside, he has finished carrying the luggage.
Hanamaru: Oops, while I was playing with the kids, Nac got outside first.
Take care, Aruji-sama.
Haoran: Hanamaru! Play, play!
Haoyu: Hanamaru! Picture books! Read picture books!
Hanamaru: Hey, don’t pull me! You guys are so impatient!
Lato: Haoyu-san. If it’s a picture book, I’ll read it to you.
Haoyu: Eh, really? Thank you!
Lato: Kufufu… It’s nothing. Well then, Aruji-sama… Leave the kids to me and enjoy your trip!
<U-um.>
Haoran: Hanamaru, give me a piggyback ride!
Hanamaru: There there! Stop pulling my hair!
Yimin: Stop it, Haoran!
Lato: Oh this picture book, the illustrations are beautiful.
Haoyu: Right, right! It’s my favorite picture book!
Hanamaru: …! Hey, I feel like my hair just fell out!
<(I wonder if it’s okay…)>
Feeling uneasy amidst the noise, we left the inn.

【The eastern land On ferry】
- A few days later -
We changed into the clothes that Flure had prepared for us. We were on a ferry heading to Shanlong.
Hanamaru: But still…
<Hm?>
Hanamaru: As expected of you, Aruji-sama. The traditional clothes of the eastern land look good on you.
<Eh?>
<I wonder…>
Nac: Fufu… To be able to serve such a wonderful Aruji-sama, I must say… I seem to be a blessed butler.
Bastien: I don’t know much about clothes but… I think the outfit suits you well, Aruji-sama.
Muu: Yes! Aruji-sama, you look very amazing!
<Thank you, everyone>
Lato: Fufu… As expected, Flure is amazing. I’ll give him lots of praise when we get back to the mansion.
Nac: By the way, I haven’t heard it yet… Why did you want to go on this request, Lato?
Lato: Hehe… It’s because I wanted to go to Shanlong city.
<You know about Shanlong?>
Lato: Yes. I once heard from Miyaji-sensei that Shanlong is a beautiful city… So I thought that someday… I wanted to invite Aruji-sama to go there. Just then… I heard that you were going to Shanlong on a request… I thought I couldn’t miss this opportunity… so I decided to accompany you on the request.
<I see>
Bastien: Hmm… It’s been a while since I last went to the eastern land… I’ve heard that Shanlong’s food is delicious… I’m looking forward to eating there.
Muu: Hehehe. I’m looking forward to the food too!
Nac: Oh dear… Have you guys forgotten about the request? We have been sent by the Grobanner family to carry their luggage. Don’t forget that.
Hanamaru: Aa, I know that. The Grobanner family has given us a return ticket for the request. This ticket’s for the ship leaving in 8 days.
Muu: Huh!? Are you sure it’s alright to leave the mansion for that long, Aruji-sama?
Nac: If that’s the case, we will hurry up and send a ship back to the central land. Of course, we’re coordinating with the butlers at the mansion. We’ve made all the necessary preparations… so please don’t worry about that.
Muu: If you say so, I feel a little more at ease, Nac.
<That’s right.>
Hanamaru: So, the longest we can stay in Shanlong is… 9 days, including today. We have to finish the request by then… Then we have to find out if “Shinonome Yimin” is Yuhan’s cousin.
Lato: Hmm… I heard about Yuhan’s situation from him. Apparently, there may be a relative of his in Shanlong…
Hanamaru: Oh, Lato was listening too. If so, that makes things easier.
Lato: By the way, how are you going to check? When we meet that man named Yimin… Should we ask him, “Do you know Shinonome Yuhan?”
Hanamaru: Umm… I am thinking about it too… It seems like that's not the case…
Nac: What do you mean?
Hanamaru: Before leaving the mansion… I heard from Yuhan. Well, the residents of Shanlong are… It seems that many people are favorably disposed towards the Sardis family. And that city… It is not far from Yuhan’s hometown. I’m sure… A major named Shinonome Yuhan who betrayed the Sardis family… As a result, Yuhan’s hometown was burned down… The residents of Shanlong must have known about it. If so, if Yimin was a person who was friendly towards the Sardis family. Even if he was his cousin… it’s entirely possible that he would hate him.
What if… Even if Yimin didn’t hate Yuhan… By admitting that he is related to Yuhan, he may lose his place in Shanlong. Taking such a risk… I can’t imagine he would answer honestly about his relationship with Yuhan. So, either way… We have to… we can’t ask directly if he is Yuhan’s relative.
Nac: I see… So we… have to find out Yimin-san’s identity without directly questioning him…
Hanamaru: Yeah, that’s right.
Bastien: We only have a limited amount of time to investigate, so we need to work together.
Nac: Yes, I think so. If it’s for Yuhan-san’s sake… I, Nac, will be happy to help.
Muu: Of course, I want to be of help too!
<I also want help>
Lato:...
Hanamaru: Lato, what about you?
Lato: That’s right… Before I decide to cooperate or not, let me ask one question. Earlier, Hanamaru-san said the following, “It’s possible that Yimin dislikes Yuhan.” About people who might hate him, why does Yuhan-san want to know? That’s something I don’t understand. If I don’t understand, I don’t think I want to cooperate.
<Lato…>
Hanamaru: Hmm… You’re right. Why would you want to know about someone who might hate you, huh? I think that’s because Yuhan… genuinely wishes for his cousin’s happiness.
It doesn’t matter whether you are disliked or not. If my relatives are alive… I want to know if they are living happily. I think that’s all that Yuhan was thinking about.
Lato:.... Hmmm… I guess I don’t really understand Yuhan-san’s way of thinking. For people he doesn’t even know and might hate him, for me, it doesn’t matter.
Muu: Lato-san…
Lato: But well, it’s okay. This time I will also… cooperate with Hanamaru-san. I’m sure that would be better… Aruji-sama would be happy too.
<Thank you, Lato.>
Lato: Kufufu… No, it’s nothing. I just wanted to please my Aruji-sama.
Hanamaru: Okay. Now that we’re all in agreement. Let’s do our best for Yuhan.
Muu: Yes! I’ll try my best to find out more about Yimin-san!
Nac: Fufu, it’s an information war. Sounds exciting, right?
Bastien: I’ll do my best too.
<I’ll try my best too.>
Lato: Oh my, everyone is full of motivation even before we get to Shanlong. By the way, it looks like we’ve finally reached our destination. Far away… something that looks like a port comes into view. Oh, that is “Shanlong, the City of Water Dragons”...
【The Water Dragon’s City Shanlong】
After a while, we got off the boat and arrived at the city. In the city, there are waterways that lead to a large river… Boatmen wearing umbrellas travel back and forth in small boats. Unlike the resort city Velis… this is the water city of the east, exuding a sense of wabi-sabi. That was the impression I got from Shanlong, the City of Water Dragons.
Lato: Hmm, I see… So this is Shanlong. Kufufu… It may not be flashy, but it has a quiet beauty.
Nac: Yes, I think so too. It’s different from the central land and the southern land… the calm atmosphere is wonderful.
Bastien: By the way, Hanamaru-san… Now that we’ve arrived in the city, what are we going to do next?
Hanamaru: First, let’s go to the inn that Yimin runs. According to the letter, it’s near the port. I was thinking of staying there during our stay.
Nac: I think I’ll be able to talk to you about lots of things, Yimin-san… That sounds great.
Bastien: Aruji-sama please follow us so that we don’t get separated.
<Um.>
Creak…
Hanamaru: This is the only inn near the harbor.
???: Welcome.
Hanamaru: Hello. Sorry for the sudden arrival, but… Are you Yimin who wrote the letter to me?
???: Yes, that’s right. Ah… Could it be, you are the mail bottle’s…? I never thought that you would come so soon after sending me the letter. I was sure I’d get a letter back, it’s surprising.
Hanamaru: I come to Shanlong for some business.
Yimin: I see, fufufu. By the way, your fluffy green hair… It’s just like the picture your children drew.
Then, Yimin, who was talking to Hanamaru, turned his gaze towards us.
Yimin: These people are…
Hanamaru: Well, how can I put it… They are like my work colleagues? Ah, but this person is our employer, or some other very important person.
<(He is trying to hide the fact that they’re Devil Butlers…)>
<(He is deceiving him so well…)>
Yimin: Is that so? Thank you for coming all the way here. Oops, sorry. I was so engrossed in the conversation that I haven’t introduced myself yet.
My name is Shinonome Yimin. Pleased to meet you all.
Saying that, he politely chuckled. His tone and manners were full of sensuality… He looked like someone we knew well.
<(His atmosphere is very similar to Yuhan’s…)>

Chapter 2: The Shinonome Surname
previous | all | next
【Devil’s Palace Dining Room】
“Shinonome Yimin”... As soon as Hanamaru said that, everyone fell silent.
Nac: But… I thought that Yuhan’s family…
Nac slashed awkwardly… Yuhan’s family must have been killed by Sardis Fubuki… Every single person in his family must have been killed… That’s what Nac wanted to say.
Yuhan:...
Hanamaru-san, so… what does the letter say?
Hanamaru: Yeah. I will read out an excerpt from the letter.
“Greetings. My name is Shinonome Yimin. While walking outside, I discovered the Bottle Mail that you and your children wrote. A cute picture was also enclosed. Is this a drawing by the children? They seem to be a very close family. Like you, I am also a single father raising my child. I empathize with your situation as a parent of the children in the church. Once you’ve finished raising your children… Please come and stay at the inn I’m running near the port.
I’ll be waiting for you in the Water Dragon City, Shanlong.
From Shinonome Yimin.”
That’s it.
No way… We just happened to be heading to the town on the request… I can’t believe there’s a man who seems to have some kind of relationship with Yuhan… Such a coincidence… It’s not something that happens often. And, Yuhan also has a solo mission and will not be able to move freely for a while. If only he hadn’t had a mission… He could have come with us.
Muu: Um, well… I’m sorry for interrupting you, but… What is bottle mail?
Berrien: Bottle mails are… It is, as the name suggests, a letter placed in a bottle. Put the letter in a bottle and throw it in the sea or a river… Eventually, the bottle drifts to a new place. The aim is for someone to read that letter.
Hanamaru: So, in this case…A long time ago, I threw a bottle into the ocean with the kids from the church. It drifted to the eastern land. By chance, Yimin picked up the bottle and read the letter.
Nac: Hm, I see. Based on the contents of the letter… Hanamaru-san doesn’t know Yimin-san personally… They met by chance through a message in a bottle.
Hanamaru: Ah, that’s right. He probably knows what I look like from the picture I enclosed, but… He doesn’t even know my name. So… What do you think, Yuhan? Is this “Shinonome Yimin” guy your family?
Yuhan:...
As far as I know, there was no man named Yimin in my hometown. And even if there was… He must have died when the village was burned.
Bastien: But the letter has actually arrived. What if the surname Shinonome is a surname that only Yuhan’s family has? Maybe he’s related to Yuhan?
Yuhan: Hmm… Ah!
<What’s wrong?>
<Did you notice something?>
Yuhan: Just now, I remember… Actually, I have… an older cousin who went missing when he was young.
<Cousin…?>
<Missing…?>
Yuhan: Yes, that’s right. Before I was born… Apparently he disappeared, so I never met him. However, from my family and relatives… I had heard that “I had a cousin”. It was a very sad event. I guess it was a topic that no one really wanted to talk about. I wasn’t told the details, such as the cousin’s name or gender. But that person… The eyes and the way they spoke were very similar to mine. If that cousin is still alive… That person… is the only relative I have left… alive.
Nac: That person is… “Shinonome Yimin”-san in the letter…
Yuhan: However, I think the possibility is very low.
Muu: Eh? Why is it?
Yuhan: Earlier I said… “My cousin disappeared when they were very young,” right? The reason he went missing was… a flood.
<Flood?>
Yuhan: Yes. Before I was born, the town was hit by a great flood. In the midst of the flood, when the uncle wasn’t looking, my cousin ran out of the house… Subsequent searches were in vain… In the end, they were never found. From the fact that neither the body nor belongings were found… It is presumed that they were carried away by the river.
…….
My cousin was 3 years old at that time.
<3 years old…>
<That is…>
Yuhan: It is impossible for a three-year-old child to swim in a flooded river…
My chest hurts, but my cousin… It’s natural to think they died young.
So, maybe Yimin is not my cousin.
I have heard that the surname “Shinonome” is unique to my family… Perhaps, that wasn’t true. The eastern land is very vast and has a large population.
It would not be strange if there were other people with the surname “Shinonome”
Above all else, there’s a good chance that my cousin is dead…
“Shinonome Yimin”-san. It’s extremely unlikely that they are my cousin.
Yuhan said that calmly, but his voice sounded sadder than usual.
<Yuhan…>
Hanamaru: Well, from what I’ve heard so far… I don’t think that’s necessarily the case, Yuhan.
<Eh?>
Yuhan: What does that even mean?
Hanamaru: Hey everyone… look at this.
Hanamaru showed us… a piece of paper.
Nac: This is… a hand-drawn map?
Hanamaru: Yeah. It’s the map that was enclosed with Yimin’s letter.
Bastien: Hmm, it looks like… it says “Shanlong, the City of Water Dragons” and the surrounding area. It even includes the names of rivers and mountains, as well as the characteristics of the region… It’s a very well-made map.
Muu: But this map… Does it have anything to do with Yuhan’s situation?
Yuhan:...!
This is…!
Hanamaru: Looks like Yuhan has already noticed.
<What did you notice?>
Hanamaru: Aruji-sama, please look at the map carefully. From the mountain on the east side of the map to Shanlong in the center… There is one river drawn, right? This river comes from the mountains. It flows towards Shanlong in the lowlands. And on this mountain… There are handwritten annotations. “A scenic spot of peach blossoms.”
<Peach blossoms…?>
<I think that is…>
Yuhan: My hometown, once… a place where beautiful peach blossoms bloomed. In other words, my hometown is near the mountain shown on this map.
Berrien: …! I see…!
Yuhan’s hometown and Shanlong are connected by a river. If so, what about Yuhan’s cousin, who was swept away by the overflowing river?
<They got to Shanlong?...>
Hanamaru: Yeah, that’s correct. It is quite possible that Yuhan’s cousin was swept to Shanlong. There, he was rescued. In other words, Yimin, Yuhan’s cousin, hasn’t disappeared.
Yuhan:...
<Yuhan?>
Yuhan had a complicated look on his face… Everyone’s eyes were on him.
Yuhan: Hanamaru-san, I… have another request… I can’t go to Shanlong with you all. So please.
Saying that, Yuhan bowed deeply to Hanamaru.
Yuhan: I would like to know if Yimin-san is my cousin. And… if he was my missing cousin… I want to know if he is living a happy life.
Hanamaru: Yuhan…
Yuhan: Because of me, my hometown was burned down… All my relatives were killed. My parents and uncle… they have all passed away. But, if… if there are any survivors of my family… if my cousin is still alive… I want him to live happily, and I want to know if he’s happy now. And someday, when we build a family grave in our hometown. At my uncle’s grave… I want to tell him that his child is still living happily.
Saying this, Yuhan bowed deeply again.
Hanamaru: Let’s lift your head for now, Yuhan. You don’t have to beg me so desperately… That’s been my intention from the beginning.
Yuhan: Hanamaru-san… Thank you very much.
Hanamaru: Nehehehe. I’ll lend you one.
Yuhan: Yes. I’ll thank you properly when I get back.
Hanamaru: Wow, I’ll look forward to it.
Berrien: Hehe, it seems we’ve come to an agreement.
Well then, everyone. The trip for Shanlong leaves in three days. If we leave the mansion the day after tomorrow… we’ll reach the destination and have plenty of time. Both the request and the search for Yuhan’s relatives… Good luck.
Hanamaru: Yeah.
<Are we travelling by boat this time?>
Berrien: That’s right. As its name suggests, Shanlong is a city surrounded by water. Take a boat from the river in the central land… you need to change boats to get to Shanlong.
Muu: This time, we’ll cross the river by boat! I’m excited to be on the boat again!
Nac: Hmm… this might be a bit of a long journey.
Bastien: Whether we’re on the road or on our trip, I’ll protect you, Aruji-sama.
<Thank you.>
<I’m counting on you.>
Yuhan: If possible… I will try to join you all in Shanlong. Even if it’s difficult to talk to him directly… I want to see my cousin with my own eyes. Umm… Berrien-san, this is just my humble selfishness, but… Would it be okay if I join you after I finish the request?
Berrien: Yes of course. Is that okay with you, Aruji-sama?
<Of course.>
<I want to respect Yuhan’s feelings.>
Yuhan: Thank you very much. But, of course… When I say I’ll join up… Before you all leave the city… if I can’t make it in time, I’ll wait for you at the mansion. I think this will be a long-term request for me too. There’s a good chance that we won’t be able to meet up. Please don’t worry about me.
Bastien: Don’t worry, Hanamaru and I will check it out. Don’t do anything reckless.
Yuhan: Yes, your advice is much appreciated.
Hanamaru: By the way, Berrien… The recent request was… I think it was Aruji-sama, Muu, and the four butlers.
Besides me, Bastien, Nac… Is there someone else who will accompany us?
Berrien: Yeah… that’s right. The Grobanner family has given tickets to Shanlong for five of us, including you. I think I can accompany you on the quest if there is one more person.
???: I see. Then you all don’t mind if I accompany you, right?
<This voice is…>

Chapter 1: Fall asleep fall asleep
all | next
【Devil’s Palace Backyard】
- One morning -
After having finished breakfast… I was taking a stroll through the backyard. And then… Right there, I saw several butlers gathered. The butlers were sitting around something and chatting away happily. I was curious about what they were talking about… I decided to approach them.
Muu: Zzz… munyann… Ehehe… Chicken breast, chicken breast…
Nyann…
Bastien: Fu… it looks like he is sleeping comfortably.
Hanamaru: Seriously… Muu is a glutton even in his dreams.
Bastien: But, what a cute sleeping face, right? A sleeping cat is really nice.
Yuhan: Yes. He’s just like a baby, so adorable.
The butlers were surrounding him… There seemed to be a sleeping Muu.
When they stopped talking, I called out to them.
<Good morning, everyone>
Bastien: Hm? Aruji-sama…?
Hanamaru: Morning, Aruji-sama. What a nice morning, isn’t it?
Yuhan: Good morning, Aruji-sama. Come on, Muu-chan. Let’s get up and greet Aruji-sama.
Muu: Munyan… guu…
Bastien: He’s fast asleep. He won’t be waking up for a while.
<Were you three looking at Muu?>
Hanamaru: Hmm… Well, something like that. Looking at his cute sleeping face… I was secretly petting him.
Bastien: To begin with, Yuhan and I were having a mock battle in the garden.
Yuhan: When we finished, before I knew it, Muu-chan was sleeping right next to me. Probably… I think he fell asleep watching our fight.
Hanamaru: Really, Muu… How strong are your nerves to sleep while other people are fighting… Well, something like this… Maybe he’ll grow up better if he can sleep anywhere. Why don’t you let Hanamaru sing you a lullaby?
Saying that, Hanamaru, while stroking the sleeping Muu, began to sing.
Hanamaru: “Fall asleep, fall asleep, fall asleep soundly…”
<(It’s similar to a song I know…)>
Hanamaru: “The children of the dragon are in a dream… Behind our eyelids, there is a garden of flowers…”
<(I don’t know this song at all…)>
Bastien: Hmm, that song… It’s a lullaby from the eastern lands. The name of the song is just like the lyrics say… “Song of the Water Dragon”.
Yuhan: Oya… Bastien, so you also know this song.
Bastien: It’s an old song. I only know the first verse, though.
Yuhan: Ah, I see. I think the lyrics of the second verse are…
Hanamaru: “Fall asleep, fall asleep, fall asleep soundly… The dragon’s mate is also in his dreams. Good night, my little dragon child…” Is that right?
Yuhan: No… The lyrics are quite different from the ones I know.
Hanamaru: Well, these old songs… The lyrics change depending on the region. Then… What were the lyrics like in Yuhan’s hometown?
Yuhan: Hmm, it was…
“Fall asleep, fall asleep, fall asleep soundly… The dragon’s tears fill the earth… the dawn breaks, the flowers bloom, the peach scent fills the air…” It was like that…
<The lyrics are different from Hanamaru>
Bastien: It’s strange… It’s the same song, but the lyrics are different.
While the conversation continued… someone approached from the direction of the mansion.
Nac: Good morning, Aruji-sama. And to everyone too.
<Good morning, Nac>
Muu: Guu… guu…
Nac: Oh dear, is Muu-kun taking a nap in the morning? You’re sleeping so soundly… I hope he has finished his work properly…
Hanamaru: By the way, Nac. Is there anything we can help you with?
Nac: Oh that’s right. I have a couple of things that need your help. First of all… Hanamaru-san, I’m going to deliver this to you.
Hanamaru: Hmm, is this... a letter for me?
Nac: Yes, that’s right. Your children came all the way to the mansion to deliver it to you. Apparently, this letter arrived at the church where Hanamaru and his children lived. It seems like the children regularly give the church a thorough cleaning. They said they found this letter during their cleaning.
Hanamaru: Oh… They were doing an overall cleaning of the church. I was planning to do it on my next day off, but they got there first. Oh dear… I guess they’re a lot more reliable than me. Well then, thanks for delivering it, Nac. I’m going to read this letter right away.
Yuhan: Wouldn't you normally say, “I’ll read it later”?
Hanamaru:...
Bastien: …He has already started reading it.
Nac: Oh dear… could you at least wait until you’ve heard the second requirement?
<So, what is the matter?>
Nac: Yes. The thing is… A new request has just arrived from the Grobanner family, Aruji-sama. Berrien-san will explain the details to you in the dining room. Aruji-sama and everyone else, please gather in the dining room.
<I got it>
Bastien: Hmph… Another request.
Muu: Then I will go with you, Aruji-sama!
Bastien: !
Nac: Muu-kun… As soon as you heard the request, you woke up…
Hanamaru:...
Yuhan: Hanamaru-san, did you hear what Nac-san just said?
Hanamaru: Mm, yeah… I know, we got a request, right? I’ll head to the dining room right away. I don’t want to keep Berrien waiting.
Yuhan: Is that so… (Hanamaru-san, he seems a little strange…Normally, he would pretend to be sick and try to skip the duty…)
<Yuhan, what’s wrong?>
Yuhan: …No, it’s nothing. Well then, Aruji-sama… Shall we head to the dining room?
【Devil’s Palace Dining Room】
- A few minutes later -
Nac: Sorry for the wait, Berrien-san. I have brought everyone here.
<Sorry for keeping you waiting, Berrien>
Berrien: Aruji-sama, everyone. Thank you all for gathering. Then… I believe you have heard from Nac-kun. A new request has arrived from the Grobanner family. And two at the same time.
Muu: Two requests at the same time…?
Berrien: Yes, that’s right. Fortunately, the first request… It doesn’t say that the Devil Butler’s Lord must accompany them. You will only be required to accompany us on the second request.
<I see…>
Bastien: So, Berrien-san… What were those two requests?
Berrien: Yes, the first request is… to “transport luggage to the eastern land.”
I received a package from the Grobanner family… It was to be delivered to a village beyond the mountains in the eastern lands. At first glance, it sounds simple, but… in order to reach the village…
It is very aggressive with the people of the central land. We will have to go through a dangerous area.
So, regarding this request… Directly from the Grobanner family… The condition is that “Shinonome Yuhan must carry out the request alone.”
<Yuhan alone…?>
<Yuhan in the eastern land…?>
Yuhan: Hmm, I see… I am from the eastern land. I can pass through the aggressive areas without danger… That seems to be what the Grobanner family decided.
Bastien: But is it okay to send Yuhan alone to the eastern land? What if the Sardis family finds out that he is alive…
Hanamaru: That’s true. What on earth are the nobles of the Grobanner family thinking?
Yuhan: With that in mind… I guess this time they want to leave it to me. I am familiar with the geography of the eastern lands… It is also possible to stay behind mountains to avoid various dangers. To tell you the truth, Lord Finlay once told me, “If it becomes necessary to infiltrate the eastern land, please let me know.” He told me that before.
Muu: Is that so.
Hanamaru: Do you think you can do it, Yuhan?
Yuhan: Don’t worry. I’ll definitely come back.
Hanamaru: Okay. Then I won’t say anything more. But don’t push yourself too hard.
Yuhan: Yes.
Berrien: So, let’s get started… Tomorrow morning, I’m going to have Yuhan head to the eastern land. By the way, the village we are heading to on this request is quite far away. Yuhan-san will be away from the mansion for a while. Aruji-sama too, please keep that in mind.
<I understood.>
Yuhan: Aruji-sama, I will be away from the mansion for a while… but please rest assured because I will definitely return safely.
<Don’t push yourself, Yuhan.>
<Stay safe, okay>
Yuhan: Yes.
Bastien: By the way, Berrien-san. If Yuhan is going on a mission alone… Will the other members here carry out the other request?
Berrien: Yes, that’s right. Bastien-kun, Nac-kun and Hanamaru-san… You will go on to the second request. The content of this request is the same as the first one: transporting luggage to the eastern land.” However, this request… It states that “The Devil Butler’s Lord must accompany them.” The delivery address for the package is also different from the first request. The destination is the mountainous region of the eastern land… Famous for its scenic beauty… “Shanlong, the City of Water Dragons.”
Hanamaru: Eh?
Nac: Oya, Hanamaru-san? What’s wrong?
Yuhan: Hanamaru-san, no way… You wouldn’t say you forgot to ask, would you?
Hanamaru: Hey… Berrien… If I’m not mistaken, you said “Shanlong, the City of Water Dragons” right?
Berrien: Yes, that’s correct. This time, Hanamaru-san and the others will head to Shanlong.
Hanamaru: So, Yuhan… He has a solo mission, so he can’t go to Shanlong, right?
Berrien: Yes, that’s true.
Hanamaru: …I see.
Yuhan: Umm, Hanamaru-san, is there a problem with me not going to Shanlong?
Hanamaru: …Hey, Yuhan. The surname “Shinonome” is a rare surname in the eastern land… You said you were the only ones there… Is that true?
Yuhan: Yes, it is but… Is that relevant now?
Hanamaru: Wow… So coincidences like this do happen…
Saying that, Hanamaru took out a letter from his chest.
Nac: That… that is the letter I delivered a moment ago.
Hanamaru: The sender of this letter is… A man named “Shinonome Yimin”.
Yuhan: …!
