As someone who works w animals āanimals are not mindless automatons, they actually do have feelings and individuality and are capable of feeling acute physical and emotional pain and of forming deep attachments with other animals and peopleā and āanimals are not human infants and have a limited capacity to communicate with humans so you have to familiarize yourself with their boundaries bc if they feel threatened or overstimulated they will fall back on their basic instincts and if you fuck around you are going to find outā are statements that can and should coexist

Everything Everywhere All at Once really said that parents would love to be able to blame all the things they don't understand about their children on some sort of tangible enemy that they could fight and defeat but that enemy doesn't exist and all they're fighting are their children's different forms of self-expression which causes them to hurt their children in the process and their children to lash out and hurt them. And despite all that, despite how much it hurts both parties, both still love each other and want to be understood by each other.
That for a parent to be there for their child, they have to be willing to understand them and not fight them.
I'm simply in awe of this movie.
I want to say one more thing as a cis person who experimented with labels over the years, questioned my gender, and ended up as cis after all. The trans community did not "indoctrinate" me. I had always been asking these questions, even as a little kid before I knew trans people even existed. Over the years, trans women gave me the courage to explore the femininity I wasted my youth denying, trans men taught me that manhood is what you make of it and that nobody could tell me how to define it, and nonbinary people taught me just how limitless my possibilities were. The only parts of my upbringing that left me "confused" about gender were the conservatives who imposed a vision of gender that my friends and I could not relate to. And when I realized trans identity wasn't something I could claim after all, the community loved me all the same. I am happier, and the world is more beautiful, because of trans people. The human impulse to create and survive isn't going anywhere, and neither are trans people.
I see a lot of people joking about the adhd thing of "I have a appointment/phone call at 3pm, guess I won't do anything all day!"
But no one seems to make the connection that it's a time blindness thing. One of the symptoms of ADHD is not having a good and accurate sense of time. And not doing stuff prior to an event with a hard deadline is an obvious coping mechanism for that.
Can I go to the store? It's 10am and the appointment is at 3pm. How long does going to the store take? An hour? Three hours? Five hours? I DON'T KNOW!
I get anxious trying to do things before appointments because I'm aware that I don't know how long those things take, and that if I think I do, I may be very wrong. Too often I've been like "hey I can walk to the corner store and grab a drink, that'll take like 15 minutes!" and then an hour later I get back and whoops my rice has burnt.
Plus there's also the fact that ADHD people know that motivation and focus is a two-edged sword.
Like, let's say you decide to play a video game. You've got time, you can pause/save whenever, so this should be a perfect fit to make good use of your waiting-time. So you start playing and WHOOPS you get really focused for some reason today (because people with ADHD do not get to pick when their brain decides to focus) and the next time you look at the clock it's 2:49 and you haven't showered or dressed and the appointment is 30 minutes away. Fuck. (you could have set an alarm, but now you're asking people with the forgetting-things-and-time-ignoring condition to remember it set alarms)
And with motivation, it can be almost worse. Instead of playing a game, you so something useful or creative. You clean your room or fix your plumbing or write a story or draw a picture. And suddenly it's great. Your brain is firing on all cylinders. You've got all the motivation you can ask for, and you are FLYING. the ideas are brilliant, your hands are nimble, you're getting stuff done you've been putting off for weeks or months. And then the alarm goes off. Time to go to your appointment. Fuck.
You drive there, your brain still full of ideas and plans. But by the time you get back, the motivation is gone. You may still have the ideas but you don't have the drive to write them down. You can't force yourself to do it. Your sink is still in pieces. Your room is half-cleaned, and you have to shove all the sorted clothes into one big bin just so you have somewhere to sleep. You've left things half finished again, in a cycle that has been repeating your whole fucking life. It seems sometimes that nothing ever gets finished.
So next time you don't even start. There's not time. You've been burnt too many times. Why add another half-completed project to your pile of shame?
My point is that people seem to be going "lol I can't do anything all day if I have an appointment at 3pm" like this is a quirky "oh I'm so scatterbrained!" weirdness they alone have, and not a major complication of a disabling mental illness.
(and that's not even getting into the secondary effects. If you know that having an appointment ruins your whole damn day, you're going to avoid them. Even when it's things like "going to that party" or "meeting your friends for a drink/game" or "going to a movie with that cute girl from your math class". Things you should enjoy. Things that'd help you be social. Things that make you feel human.)
I realize that's what's missing from "queer" gear these days.
The absolute pride in being a God damned freak. In being something society saw as wrong.
It's all uwu you're valid and society should accept you
Like no fuck your society. Your society is bullshit and relies on oppression to create its "norms". I don't want societal norms expanded to include me. I want to blow those structures the fuck up
yeah like when people sayĀ ānormaliseā about everything and Iām like, I donāt care how normal it is, I just want people to stop being punished for being weird. We can either attempt to normalise everything one by one, or we can do the whole thing in one fell swoop ofĀ āso what if it is weird? Nothing wrong with a bit of weirdā

Harmony for @daysbeforedawn !
best thing i ever accepted about people is that most people are just kind of gross like, physically
like most people have gross little bad habits and let the laundry go a little too long and sweat in weird places and are messy eaters and have weird laughs and are a little greasy and asymettrical and have stains and tears and wear on the things they own and its like literally fine and human. we dont need to worry about that stuff and frankly we should kill whoever is responsible for making us think humans are even capable of being perfectly polished made up hygeine machines 24/7. we are little animals we came from the dirt and sometimes you scratch your buttcrack or pick at scabs or what the fuck ever it is literally normal animal behaviour !!! let the soft animal of your body ect ect nd sometimes the soft animal of your body is a little yucky.

I want to share something for those of you who are teaching and want your conservative students to be more open-minded to liberal ideas that youāre presenting.
I grew up in a conservative family and a conservative town, and like most conservative kids, had been told that colleges were hotbeds of liberalism, so I was already defensive politically when I started college. My first semester or two I was really skeptical of everything political that my professors presented me with.
And then I took a womenās studies course (required at my college). And on the first day, the professor said,Ā
āYou donāt have to be a feminist. There are days when Iām not a feminist. But weāre going to discuss feminist ideas in this class, and you might find that you agree with some of them and disagree with others, and thatās fine.ā
And that took the pressure off. By telling me that I didnāt HAVE to be a feminist, that I didnāt HAVE to agree, that professor started me on the road to becoming a feminist. I particularly remember her giving us information about what a huge percentage of the housework was still done by women, even in [hetero] couples where both the man and woman worked outside the home. And after that I remember saying,Ā āIām not a feminist, but I can see where theyāre coming from.āĀ
Within 5 years, I was claiming the term and coming out to my mom as a feminist.
So when I taught college writing, I assigned politically liberal essays to my students, many of whom came from conservative backgrounds. And before they read the first one, I would say,
āThe reading for the next classāI want you to know that you donāt have to agree with it. You donāt have to agree with anything that your professors teach you in college. But the point of a college education is to have your mind opened to other points of view. So youāre not required to agree, but you are required to approach the reading with an open mind. You might find that you agree with some things the author says and disagree with others. And thatās cool! We WANT you to use your critical thinking and decide for yourself what you think about things! But to do that, you need to give people the benefit of the doubt and be open-minded to what they have to say.ā
And I have to say, it worked really well for me! I remember in particular that after I assigned the essayĀ āBlack Men and Public Spaceā, one of my students wrote in her reading reflection,
āI was taught in school that racism in America ended with Martin Luther King. I am appalled to discover that this is not true.ā
Priming your students to be open-minded, while also encouraging them to use critical thinking, can help to break down some of the automatic defenses against new ideas that students are often taught. Approaching your studentsā comments during discussion with an open-minded view yourself, validating their experiences while also making gentle counterarguments, can do a lot as well.
