Imagine Buying Jared A New Dog
“Yeah he’s supposed to be out for like another hour” you spoke into your phone to your best friend, Calleigh.
“Okay, I’m about to leave my house so I should be there in like thirty minutes.” you could hear his present bark a few times in the background. It’d been almost more than a year since Jared’s last dog had to be put down and he was finally going to be home for a good period of time after tour. It seemed like the perfect time to get him the new puppy you’d been planning on getting him. Calleigh and you hung up as you began picking up around the house, waiting for her to arrive.
Calleigh arrived on time, knocking on your front door loudly as she always did. “Come on, I’ve got the kennel in the back of the car.” she smiled as you opened the door to see her holding the German Shepherd puppy in her arms. “Alright let’s get him inside and I’ll help you get it.” you respond, taking the dog from her and carrying him to the living room. “Stay here,” you ordered as you set him on the couch before hurrying outside to help Calleigh bring the kennel into the house.
After setting it up in the corner while trying to make sure the new puppy didn’t run into anything and knock it over, Calleigh said goodbye and headed out. She’d been watching the dog for a couple days before you could find a time to get him into the house without Jared suspecting anything, you really wanted to surprise him because you knew how much he always liked dogs and he really missed Sky.
“Babe, I’m back.” Jared called out as you hear the door open twenty minutes later, jumping up from the ground from where you’d been sliding a towel around to entertain the puppy, picking it up with you.
“Babe!” you exclaim, running to the front door to meet him and grinning as you kissed his cheek, cradling the dog in your arms.
“Hey- I-...” Jared let out an uncomfortable laugh as he looked at the puppy. “Who is this?” he asked as the puppy barked.
“Your new dog,” you replied quickly, though you could tell something was wrong, he didn’t seem happy, at all. You tried to keep your mood up as you hoped his would switch in a moment as he realized what you’d done.
But nothing in his demeanor seemed to change as he kept his attention down on the dog in your arms, “Oh. Cool.” He responded, “I’m gonna head to bed.” he continued, kissing your cheek and giving your arm a squeeze before heading upstairs, not giving you a chance to say anything.
You stood in the entryway for a moment, frowning as you looked down at the, what you thought was adorable, puppy in your arms. “He’s probably just tired.” you mumble, as if the dog had his feelings hurt by his new owner. You kiss it’s head and walk back towards the living room, it wasn’t that late but you had to make sure nothing was wrong with Jared and you couldn’t just leave the puppy out so you slid him into his kennel and locked it before heading upstairs.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” you ask carefully, walking into your room where you find your boyfriend already ready for bed.
“Nothing I just wish you’d asked me.” he responded coldly, taking off his watch before walking over to get under the covers.
“I wanted it to be a surprise though,”
“I don’t think I’m ready for a new dog. Sky hasn’t been go-”
“It’s been more than a year, Jared. You finally have time for a new dog.” You sigh, walking over to sit down on the edge of the bed.
“Lay down. I really don’t even want to talk about this. Can you take it back?” he sighs, avoiding your eyes as he lays down.
“It’s a he.” you correct him quickly. “Maybe..I don’t know. Calleigh was watching him, maybe she’ll want him.” you grumble, admittedly ticked off at your boyfriend’s complete lack of appreciation for your gesture.
Jared let out some sort of noise as a response before closing his eyes. You roll your eyes and stand up, changing into your pajamas before shutting off the light and climbing into bed next to him, grabbing your phone to play on until you were actually tired.
You groan, your phone buzz waking you up. It’s still dark out, you turn over the phone you’d fallen asleep holding and check the time, 2:47am. The notification had been someone retweeting you, you quickly toss your phone away onto a pile of clothes on the floor and turn over to curl up against your boyfriend when you realize he’s not in bed next to you. After a moment you sit up and look around, climbing up and walking out into the hallway to check the bathroom.
After hearing a noise downstairs you begin walking down slowly, heading towards the only room with a light on, the living room. You smile softly, standing in the doorway as you see Jared sitting on the floor near the kennel, holding the sleeping puppy in his lap and scratching his back lightly.
“You’re so cute. Sky would’ve liked you, Judas too.” you can’t help but let out a little laugh as you hear him, causing him to turn around quickly and flash one of his sleepy smiles at you. “Hey, I’m sorry about earlier I just- it’s weird. They were around together for so long and I lost one of ‘em but Sky was still here and now it’s like starting all over and I was just-”
“It’s fine,” you cut him off, shaking your head as you walk over to sit beside him, “I understand.”
You lean your head on his shoulder as you brush the puppy’s fur back, letting out a little hum after yawning. “I’m gonna name him Zeus.” Jared spoke softly, you weren’t sure if he was trying to make sure the puppy, or Zeus, didn’t wake up, or respect the fact it was almost 3am and you were awake for some reason.
“Zeus is a cute name.” you approve, lifting your head to kiss his cheek. “I’m glad you like him.”
“I love him,” Jared corrects quickly, turning to kiss your lips before reminding you that you have to be up early and you should definitely be asleep.
