It had been a year. The lights on the tree twinkled in a timely pattern, and the children pranced around, throwing tinsel and randomly placing decorative Christmas ornaments on the tree. Kyouya watched from the sofa, a faint smile on his face as he looked at his children.
His eyes followed the smallest child as she made her way over to him, putting her arms up to signify that she wanted to be picked up. He picked the beautiful, brown haired child and placed her on his lap. She grinned at him and kissed his cheek, giggling, forcing Kyouya to smile broadly.
âWhat do you want then, miss?â He asked, moving some hair from her face and placing it behind her ear. The child shrugged, and looked at Kyouya innocently. âYou want to look at pictures?â
The girl nodded, as Kyouya picked up the tablet from his side and unlocked it, opening a picture folder labeled âthe one and onlyâ, a folder of you, of which you had named. Kyouya hadnât changed it. He was holding on to every bit of you as he could, no matter if it was a folder name or the stash of various weird teas you had hidden in the cupboard.
It was you, and he didnât want you to go.
As the pair of them began to flick through the photos, the twins gathered around as Kyouya began to narrate each one. He began to tell the story of how the both of you first met, a personal favorite of your childrenâs and yours.
Kyouya remembered it clearly; it was a moment that he reflected on many times a day. He met you at his familyâs hospital when you were both teenagers. Heâd seen you many times before in there, but never got the chance to talk to you.
You were waiting in the reception area to be seen - the hospital was busy- and Kyouya being Kyouya, had recognized you as a respectable person from a influential business his family was pursuing. He swiftly walked over, sitting next to her and looking at her arm which was resting in a cloth on her lap.
âMiss y/n, maybe we should think about a reserved room for you here.â Kyouya joked, pushing up his glasses as you grinned at him.
âYouâve noticed my regular appearances here then.â You replied, looking at your arm âIâm pretty sure Iâm a good portion of the business you make here, considering my monthly visits.â
âWhat have you done this time?â Kyouya asked, secretly admiring you as you looked at your arm.
âI donât quite know. I thought I might of just sprained my wrist, but the swelling is bad so I might have broken it.â
âHowâd you do it? Dancing again?â
âI fell out of a tree.â
âYou fell out of a tree?â
âYeah.â
Kyouya looked at you questioningly, to which you sighed.
âYou canât tell anyone.â You whispered, holding out your pinky, to which Kyouya âpinkie promisedâ a gesture he was used to due to Tamaki âI was rescuing what I thought was a cat stuck in a tree.â
âWhat you thought was a cat stuck in a tree?â Kyouya said, pushing his glasses up again âWhat was it?â
âWell I got half way up this tree, and it wasnât moving as much as it was when I was on the ground, so I climbed faster, thinking it might of died from shock or something.â You looked at Kyouya and face palmed with your good hand âAnd it turns out it was a fur scarf, stuck in birds nest.â
Kyouya started to chuckle along with you as you shook your head, and nudged his arm.
âThatâs not even the worst part.â You chuckled âIâm scared of birds, and as I remove this scarf from the nest, a mother bird and itâs children are there staring into my soul. Then all of a sudden the mother bird starts to get protective and begins to flap its wings and come towards me, so I quickly depart down the tree, but then the scarf gets caught. I try and untangle it, and in the process I fall down. Itâs not even the first time in that tree, I just never make it to the top.â
By this point, the children listening to the story are howling with laughter as they imagine the scene. Kyouya finishes the anecdote by telling them about waiting with her in the doctorâs room and the children listen intently.
âDad, tell us another.â The male twin asked.
âItâs getting late. Maybe another time.â
âDaddd.â The three said in Unison. Kyouya sighed and gave in, shifting so the youngest could rest her head against his chest and the others could sit close.
âDad, What did Mummy last say?â
Kyouya gulped, locking the tablet and putting it aside. This was the saddest story.
It was a year ago. The lights on the tree twinkled in a timely pattern, and the children pranced around the tree, throwing tinsel and randomly placing decorative Christmas ornaments on the tree. Kyouya held up the youngest to put a bauble near the top of the tree, and the twins began sneaking candy canes into their pockets.
âI can see you two you know. Your nearly as bad as The Hitachiin twins.Put them back.â
âDamn it.â The brunette female twin said.
âHey! Watch your language.â
âYour mother is an adult. Now put the candy canes back - both of you!â
The twins put the candy canes back on the tree and sighed.
âWhenâs mum coming home?â The boy asked.
âSheâs on her way. Now hurry, we want to get the room decorated by the time she gets back.â Kyouya put the youngest back down whilst he answered his phone which was buzzing in his pocket.
âThis better be good.â Kyouya answered, sighing angrily âTamaki, You know Iâm with the children. What possibly could it be?â
âKyouya you need to get to the hospital as soon as possible. Y/N has been involved in a car accident. Iâm going in the ambulance with her to the hospital.â
âWait what? How are you there?â
âShe was helping me get Christmas presents. I was parked at the time, but I saw the collision from my car.â
âRight. Okay. Iâm on my way.â Kyouya called for a servant to look after the children before rushing out of the door on the way to hospital.
The ride seemed to go on for ever, and Kyouya was angry at that. He shed a few tears in the car, knowing he couldnât in the presence of you. He had to be strong, for you.
When he reached the hospital, Tamaki was waiting outside, and it was clearly visible that he had been crying.
âWhat are you doing Tamaki? I thought you were supposed to be in there with her! Where is she?â Tamaki grabbed Kyouyaâs arm and walked speedily towards where you were at.
As Kyouya appeared at your side, you took his hand and opened your eyes a little more. You were badly cut, and a doctor was tending to the glass in your arm.
âIs she okay? Do you need a blood donor?â
âSheâs got a few serious injuries, but sheâs conscious and stable for now. We believe there may be some head trauma, weâre prepping her for a CT now.â
âSoon isnât good enough.â Kyouya growled at the doctor, to which you lightly hit his arm.
âShut up you fool. Docâs been great company.â
âY/N.â He grazed his thumb against your hand.
âI got the finishing Christmas decoration for the tree. It was in a white box. Did it survive the crash?â
Kyouya looked through the unharmed possessions of yours, and pulled out a small-ish sized white box.
âWe needed a tree topper. I fell in the Christmas tree and broke the last one.â
âWhen did you fall-never mind.I could of got it. Then you wouldnât be here.â
âYou would of brought an ugly one.â
Kyouya opened the box and looked at the beautiful angel tree topper. It was white, with golden hints on its wings and dress.
âWe can put it on the tree on Christmas Eve. Weâre all together then. It can be a tradition.â
Kyouya smiled weakly at you, as you began to slowly close your eyes.
âThereâs three things I want you and the kids to know.â You said, in between deep breaths âOne, I love you. Two, I love the kids. And 3âŚâ
Kyouya listened intently as a faint grin crept on your face and you tried to chuckle but ended up coughing.
âStay away from trees. I have an awful knack for accidents involving treesâŚmaybe itâs genetic.â You joked âI love you Kyouya, more than you ever know. Donât forget that.â
Your eyes began to become heavy, and the doctor began to call in other medical professionals as your heart rate began to decrease. Kyouya stood there, holding the box of the Angel and everything around him became a blur as he saw the last breath of life leave your chest.
âI miss mummy.â The youngest said, breaking Kyouya from his teary flashback.
âMe too.â Kyouya said, wiping his tears âShe loves you all, and sheâs looking down on us now. Letâs do the topper, whilst weâre all here, as a family.â
Kyouya and the kids gathered round the tree and began to get the Angel out of the box.
âMaybe the Angel is mummy.â The youngest suggested âKeeping an eye on us.â
âMaybe.â Kyouya replied. He reached up and put the topper on the tree and stood back and looked at it. It was beautiful; just like you were to him.
As the kids wandered off to get ready for bed, Kyouya stood admiring the tree, with tears streaming down his face.
âI love you Y/n, and I miss you every second of everyday.â He sniffled, before smiling faintly âAnd here you are, an Angel on top of a tree. Ironic really, but I guessâŚyou were always so determined to get to the top of that tree.â
