not a fan of jesy's first single, at all. not my thing, added the controversies and shade, not listened to it again. took my time to even check out her new stuff, as i felt quite sour about it, and just recently listened to bad thing, and was pleasantly surprised. it's much more interesting, sultry and delicate, really nice. if that were the overall arch and style she was aiming overall, I'd be intrigued. third one feels common, commertial and forgettable imo. think if she went more r&b she could explore something cool. but honestly, if the personal is not resolved, i don't see myself being a fan
leigh's stuff is really cool. it definitely has a commited sound and feel, is consistent and with great vocals. it's also fun, which is an underrated necessity for great pop music. i simply don't find myself listening to it often 'cause it's not my personal style, and didn't get stuck in my head
perrie has me confused. i was so looking forward to her long-teased project and have felt weirdly underwhelmed. she's always had such a rock forward approach to singing and styling, I'd thought that was the angled to take. instead I find her first single good, but not great, and fastly forgettable. and the ones that followed were ok, but the chorus turned repetitive, and overall they felt weirdly long, even tho they weren't? what disheartened me the most was they felt generic. her vocals are remarkable as always, but the songs felt interchangable with other pop girlies. for a project as planned out and lenghtly, i guess what we've seen as of now doesn't seem worth the wait? if this record had been released shortly after the hiatus, I probably wouldn't have hyped it up as much, I guess. I'm honesly sad cause there's so much that could be done, it just doesn't seem personal and special enough for her trayectory and the build up.
jade, imo, is right on the money. the build up felt worth it cause the single felt so intentional, reflective of her whole being and career so far, and more personal than the group have been since LM5. the sound was very different, jarring even, it took getting used to, but it also demanded a few listens to be with it, which is great to get you interested and then hooked. the following singles are similar enough to exist in the same record, but still distinct and varied. the roll-out and promotional content is very personal too, self-driven and focused, which keeps you engaged. and, most of all, it's all quite artistic, yet still entertaining, not taking itself or her too seriously. my one hold-up is the vocals. she's such a terrific vocalist, and it's not really shining through in the production. seems intentional, but it saddens me that the spoken verses prevail on every song.
