been trying to find sources and have been coming up with nothing that is certifiable, so two thoughts on The Dan Avidan Situation TM:
it is not a bad thing to wait for more information when an accusation seems suspect. there is a fundamental difference between the ideas of “we should always be inclined to believe victims over potential abusers even if there isn’t evidence” and “we should always believe any accusation even when the evidence might be falsified.” this isn’t a ryan haywood. there is one video of dan saying a joke about having sex in a tub, which he sent to a 22-year-old in a completely consensual interaction, and who he spoke to once when she was 17.
and most importantly, the allegation, and any others i could find, were posted on a subreddit that is known for attempting to cause controversy surrounding dan specifically because they love jontron. jontron. racists have done much worse than falsify sexual assault allegations to ruin people they don’t like, especially within the context of dan being openly jewish and israeli, and it’s fair to be cautious in taking them at their word. it’s a 50/50 shot at this point, and that’s okay. more information will come out. you are allowed to reserve judgment until there is more info.
which, to the second point: grooming is a very serious accusation, and calling any age imbalance grooming is extremely minimizing and disrespectful. personally, i think ‘guy with some fame has sex with someone much younger and then ghosts her’ is an extremely believable thing for a celebrity to do. i also think that calling it ‘grooming’ to tell a fan who is turning 18 ‘happy birthday’ once and then four years later entering a consensual relationship - with, as far as i can tell, no interaction in between - isn’t grooming. you are perfectly within your rights to be uncomfortable with the age gap, but power dynamics and grooming are not the same thing, and you should be very careful to make sure you are using accurate terminology.
believe victims. but also, fact check things. have a healthy amount of skepticism for both parties. celebrities are not infallible beings. even if it turns out that they were shitty, or were shitty but just in a different way, it is worth it to make sure you are not actively making social media into more of a gossip rag than it already is.
