@imisstheoldweezer
This track from Cool Original answers the question “What if Weezer was from the Pacific North West and not California?” The music video is so 90′s -- what a wonderful treat!
This one is a bit of a stretch as Glass Beach are an incredibly eclectic band, but it’s no doubt that Weezer has influenced them on their debut The First Glass Beach Album. Right at the 1:28 mark this song dissolves into a very Pinkerton-esque breakdown.
The music video for “Bummer” by Save Face is essentially a merger of the “Say It Ain’t So” and “Undone – The Sweater Song” videos. A great homage to Weezer, but it doesn’t stop there. The song is influenced by early Weezer as well, pulling aspects the best aspects from the Blue and Pinkerton eras.
There are a lot of cameos in this video, can you spot them all?
I’ll let Billy Cobb’s own words describe this one: "I got tired of waiting for Weezer to release another good album so I made one myself: Zerwee"
This past week I started listening to Matt Apodaca’s Weezer podcast What’s With These Homies Talking About Weezer. The latest episode features Paul Rust and Michael Cassady who are part of the band Don’t Stop or We’ll Die. During the discussion they mention how Weezer has influenced their own band and you can hear that effect (and those Rentals-y synths!) on “Space Worm” the first track on their record Dazzle Me.
The intro, the guitars, the build up, the drums, the bridge, the solo, the ‘oohs’, this is so Weezer!
A friend shared a meme with me that said “Mitski is just Weezer for girls” -- I thought that was an awful take, but when “Your Best American Girl” played on shuffle shortly after I started to hear a bit of Weezer. As this track blows up near the end it would sonically fit quite well on Pinkerton!
Can you get anymore early Weezer than this killer track from Nudie Mag? They have a 3 song demo up on Bandcamp that has two other solid songs, including “She’s A Star” which has a Rentals vibe (I Miss The Old Rentals?), but with Green album era backing vocals.
Cleveland’s Heart Attack Man are trying to rival Tony Molina for the shortest Weezer-esque track. This song is anything but boring as it’s a little harder and faster than most early Weezer songs.
This might be the only time I’ll post a hardcore band on this blog. Drug Church’s new album Cheer is heavily influenced by the sounds of the 90s and several poppier alternative elements make their way onto the record. Including the riff behind this track “Weed Pin” which shares some similarities to the riffs on the Blue Album. The comparisons to Weezer end there, but this song is a blast to turn up to 11.
This song leans a little more Fountains of Wayne (but there’s some Weezer influence there). However, this solo is pure Blue Album!
This is the stoner version of “In The Garage.”
In an interview with The AU Review earlier this month, the band said “Our goal ultimately, is to not be compared to Weezer anymore.” Oops, sorry about that!
Chris Shaw mixed Partner’s debut album In Search of Lost Time, he also engineered the Blue Album.
This is the first song from a band that pre-dates Weezer on this blog. We wouldn’t have Weezer if it weren’t for their summer tour mates the Pixies.
Does “Velouria” sound familiar? Weezer covered the song on the 1999 compilation, Where Is My Mind? A Tribute To The Pixies.
Listen to the Post-Pinkerton podcast that discusses that cover here.
Weezer took us back to the beach on 2016′s White Album, but Chumped was ready to write killer summer jams since the first time they heard the Blue Album.
Filter Weezer through the 2010s Philadelphia punk / indie scene and you’ll get something like Swearin’.
User Ben Hogan from the All Things Weezer message board posted this song with the comment “THIS IS THE MOST WEEZER SOUNDING SONG I'VE EVER HEARD.”
He’s not wrong.
