A rant all dressed up with nowhere to go
I have been a vacationer to my current town of residence since I was a child. I have lived here going on 14 years now. My dad died here. I have found community amongst people I never thought would be important. I thought my community was home to the nicest people I had ever met. I'd stand by and die on that hill.
However lately it has become apparent that my disillusionment with the community I have heavily grown up in and loved for so long is actually so full of hate.
To see what is happening in the world and think the lives that were and continue to be affected deserve what is happening to them is one of the saddest things I've ever seen. And they think auditory volume is what makes them right. It is exhausting to continue to argue that people shouldn't get killed in the street the way they have been. It is exhausting to point out that resisting/filming/protesting/ witnessing is not worthy of death. It is exhausting to point out that exercising your first and second amendment rights are indeed a right and not an option.
It is angering to see that treating others the way you want to be treated is no longer a rule but a suggestion that grows further and further from the truth everyday. I know not everyone thinks gentleness/kindness/basic decency is something that should be given freely, but what I do know is if the treatment that is happening to these innocent people was happening to you, you'd be absolutely outraged.
I will never claim to be the most well versed in politics. I can however say that basic human kindness is something I am very familiar with. As a society, we have seemed to have lost the ability to think selflessly. At the end of the day, all of our graves are the same and we all reduce to the same dust. Cruelty is not necessary nor will it help you get ahead when our end result is all the same.
ICE never should have been weaponized the way that it has. No one should be getting publicly executed for their beliefs. No one. No one should live in fear of speaking up for the things they believe in or wonder if they'll get snatched off the street. No one should have to worry about if they'll ever see their family again or if their children will be used as bait against them. We do not need to breed more hate for those not born here. We're literally on a floating rock in space. And if hate is what makes it great, then I don't want to be great.
