her body froze in fear. it was over, she knew that. the anticipation only made it worse. “make it quick, please.” the thought of a painful and long death frightened her. she tried to make peace with herself, knowing from the start that this moment will come. she was weak, she didn’t belong here. she was nothing but a warm-up for all the careers. what a pity. the cold, hard metal pressed to the side of her neck seemed way heavier than it should be. her mind was empty, she couldn’t think of anything. her life didn’t flash before her eyes as most people believed, no. she already felt dead.

“no, i’m not,” alexandra replies bluntly. she used to be scared of failing and dying in the arena but not anymore. only a lionheart can survive the games. “why would i be? everybody dies sooner or later, it’s only a matter of time.”
adelaide xue khan has just volunteered for the 75th annual hunger games ! they are twenty five years old and they come from district 2. my first impression tells me that they are intuitive & treacherous so surely the sponsors will keep an eye on them !
this is really late but whatever. i hope you enjoy my baby soldier!
born in a wealthy family of victors, adelaide wanted to become a career since she was little. her parents were big supporters of the capitol, especially her father, and they did everything they could to help her dream become reality and signed her up for the academy.
at first, it was hard for her to live up to the expectations. both of her parents won the hunger games and brought pride to their district, of course she had to do even better than them. she never wanted to live in their shadow so she had to work really hard. she was aggressive, always picking up fights with random people and getting in trouble for it. she had her own way of using people’s own words against them, provoking them, then calling it self-defense.
after graduating from the career academy, adelaide chose to stay home a few more years to get herself ready for volunteering. her parents understood her decision and trained with her on a daily basis. they brought her to capitol parties, introducing her to wealthy people that one day might sponsor her. for her, the path to fame sounded easy. this year, she knew she had to volunteer. she wanted to win the quarter quarrel.
she knew how to play her cards right. she could easily put on a good girl act, then slash somebody’s throat. she’d do this for fun, mess up with people’s minds for her own amusement, not even feeling sorry for it. she is good at assuming things about people, particulary their weaknesses. she doesn’t know what loyalty truly means, at least not in the arena. she’d probably kill her own parents if that’s what she needed to do in order to survive and earn the fame she deserves.
for a brief moment pandora was thrown back into the past, the memory of being gathered in district 11′s town square with thousands of other people, cornered in by peacekeepers as they were all forced to watch the events of some year’s particular arena play out on a large screen mounted above city hall. that was years ago, the image of it old enough to blur in the edges of her mind as the details faded with time – but she she could still remember the extravagant voice of caesar flickerman clearly, his words booming through the speakers that day as she and the other townspeople watched a tall blonde boy easily slit the throat of a young girl on the broadcast. “and another clean kill for district 2! you can see how beneficial the training at these career academies are, and this young man has yet to even graduate!”
career academy. now the technique made sense.
“i was just wondering, actually,” the blonde responded genuinely. she knew that the tributes around her were on their best behavior to not trust anyone, and she understood why, but pandora saw no reason to lie. everyone would see each other at the worst in the arena, anyways, so what was the point in trying to be deceitful? so she answered truthfully. “it’s a very complex move, it would be hard not to be impressed.” she glanced at the slash-covered target in interest, analyzing it with a tilt of her head. “do you always favor your right hand?”
there weren’t many things that could annoy her so quickly but being studied by the enemy was surely one of them. if the other tributes would find out about her weakness, they would make sure to injure her right hand to get her out of the game fast. no, there was no way alexandra could allow that. she worked way to hard to get to the career academy, then to become one of the best students. she couldn’t let all those go to waste just because somebody was trying to stick their nose into her business. her training session had just been postponed. now, she had to make this girl go away.
“i train both of my hands but on different days,” she explained in a bitter tone. “as you can already tell, today i’m focusing on my right hand.” that wasn’t entirely a lie. she learned that she must train her weak spots just as much as the strong ones, otherwise she would never be in perfect shape. she had to push every single muscle of her body beyond its limits if she wanted to become a better version of herself. if not, she had no chance of surviving the arena.
having useful information increased her chances of survival. she spent a lot of time rewatching the previous editions of the hunger games, analyzing patterns and searching for clues but there was something missing. something that only a former tribute, a victor would know. luckily, that’s what mentors were for. adelaide left the common room, searching for cassius stone, the man who won the 59th arena. she had to admit that his plan was good, the other careers didn’t expect him to turn against them so quickly but she needed something new. the same trick wouldn’t work twice. she made her way through the building until she found the one she had been looking for. “excuse me, may i talk to you?” she asked, a determined look spread all over her face. ( @stcnecold )
NERO WAS EAGER FOR SILENCE. he had learned long ago how to smile when people expected him to and how to make light conversation, but he was introverted at his core. the endless discussion of the games and his costume, of his preferred weaponry and who he thought might be competitive, had exhausted him. nero strode toward the elevator, his steps quick and purposeful, and he pressed the button to wait amongst a group of other tributes. he’d rather take the stairs, he thought. at least that way he wouldn’t have to be trapped in a little room with people he’d soon kill, but it seemed that the capitol thought the stairs were only for the impoverished. he crossed his arms over his chest, trying to maintain his air of unapproachability, and to make it clear that he wanted to be left alone. within moments, however, a young woman approached him and leaned in close to get a better look at him. nero glowered at her, unable to help the annoyance that played across his face. “see something you like?” he asked. although his words were teasing, his tone was a bit too sharp for simple playfulness. “you’re welcome to sponsor me.”
this was getting embarrasing. the man didn’t look like he was in the mood for any interactions and truth to be told, she found him a little scary. but again, the hunger games were not a place for the weak ones like her. it was a contest of champions, she was nothing but a prey to all the careers, something they could have fun with. she tried to enjoy the parade and the afterparty, standing there and looking pretty in a beautiful black outfit, carefully studying people’s clothes and trying to imagine if there was something that’d fit them better than what they were currently wearing. that worked for most of the guests but the moment she saw his costume, she knew it was a perfect match. now she had to explain to him why she was staring like that without making a fool out of herself. mission impossible. “um, no. i mean, yes. your costume is impressive,” she managed to reply. “excuse me sir, i’m not a sponsor. i’m a tribute and i apologize for staring, i just wanted to take a closer look at your outfit.”
