Holllyyyy crap the new paid leave law in MN is AMAZING.

I was happy it was there but not frankly paying much attention because I am self employed. So, like, I figured it wouldn't apply to me.

NOT SO! For $300 a YEAR I can buy in to the scheme that will give me 66% of my average weekly income if I get hurt, or if I have to take care of someone. Like for Pookie's top surgery. Or if one of the many aging boomers in my life need help. (People with actual employers have this all paid for by their employer. Like it's mandatory. But I am my employer, so I get to choose. And I am choosing to pay in because this is amazing.)

BUT WAIT!

It can also be for taking care of people I'm not related to, as long as I'm not charging them for care. A law that supports found family! Amazing! Anybody can take care of anybody they care about enough to do this for!!!

It also covers bonding time for new adoptions, bonding time for non-carrying parents, and, not helpful for me but amazing. you can also use it to safely get out of a domestic violence situation!

They did a good job on this one.

sometimes i think people do this thing with visible marginalisation, and quite often with disability, where they treat meeting someone with that as an Event TM. they see the disability first and then they see that as the central aspect to this other person, and the actual personhood and interiority of that disabled human becomes tacked on around the big glaring point of interest that is being different. if it gets acknowledged at all. so they approach disabled people almost like an encounter with an NPC in a RPG. think of a disability related joke. or don't be obvious that you noticed that they're Different, but find a way to ask about it. because you're curious, of course. think of something to say that shows you totally support and accept disabled people, that you're one of the Good Ones who can be trusted. and it's like, all this - the painful jokes about the disability or the painful avoidance of the entire existence of the disability, and the need for approval and camaraderie and trust from a complete stranger all happen for the same reason. it stems from a fixation on the fact that someone is noticeably different, and that difference is all that you can see. it rings so loudly in your head that you have to address it somehow. you have to break the ice, talk about the elephant in the room, or politely ignore it like if it doesn't get named it can't hurt you. and you understand that disabled people can tell that they're being treated as a disability given form instead of an actual like. person.

america centrism is one of the most annoying things ever on the internet because even people who arent american will assume you're american even though you very much are not and have alos stated on multiple occasions that you are not american.

you can post about the most mundane things like ice cream trucks, cursive writing, the lake outside ur house, that red kite you saw fly by, your cat being covered in corn, even the butter you use on your bread. and someone will be like "i know america is weird" or be like "lol yeah [part of the US] is like that" when you were never even talking about the US in the first place because you're not american and don't and never have lived in america.

the fact america has taken up SO MUCH of the internet that you can post about anything and someone's first assumption is that you're american is absurd. you can post about an emergency and someone will be like "call 911", or post about something and someone's like "that's illegal!" (when it only is in the US) or "that's clever bc [law that is only applicable in the US]" and it wont be freaking applicable to 95.78% of the world population. and yet everything is assumed to be about america all the time! isnt that absurdly insane?
