Summary

Will should’ve realized this sooner. The fifth anniversary of the start of all of this, the day he was taken, was just four days ago. It passed by harmlessly. That should’ve been a warning sign. Now Will is paying the price for his naive, yet blissful, ignorance as he dangles between the balance of his two worlds. One of home, one of nightmares. El's grip on his bloody hand is tight as she tries to pull him from perdition. Looking up, he can see El’s face flushing with strain, her limbs shaking. She’s tired. They’re both exhausted. After everything she's done in the past few days, he knows she's spent. Her powers can’t– She can’t save them. Will can't be saved this time.

But he can save her.

He inhales, taking in his last breath protected by a night of blanketed stars and faraway brown eyes, and exhales.

Will lets go.

And he falls away from Eden. OR: November 10th, 1988, Will Byers is taken into the Upside Down. The Party & Co. come together to try and save him, all the while Will is fighting to save himself. New monsters emerge and love flourishes. Will hides and Mike finds.

I think one of the funniest lines I wrote in Fall from Eden was in Chapter 5: Confessions to No One

"Well, putting detergent on yourself doesn’t make sense on a normal day, but with an open wound? That’s asking for an infection."

like, Mike is just baffled that Will would dump laundry detergent on himself, because who does that??? especially while injured?

of course it makes sense once they figure out he was masking his scent, but still it's just absurd. laundry detergent? yuck. I remember giggling when writing it.

I absolutely adore the ending, it's so different compared to other space novels where the protagonist departs from their alien friend and goes back to earth. it's always so sad to see that happen, but understandable.

but this book kept the protagonists together in the end and made Grace stay on Erid instead of going back home to earth, and I love it.

I love how this book focused on hope and humanity's will to survive (not just humans but eridians too, beings in general) it focused on friendship and hope and the act of sacrifice.

no character was perfect (except for Rocky, he's perfection) and I love everyone so much.

fuck ai!!! please tell me if something is ai generated! nobody is perfect and it's getting harder to spot the signs of ai, so before denouncing someone please make sure they know first!

and please be kind about it, especially in the case where we don't realize it's ai. I've seen such harsh callouts towards fanfiction writers about them "using ai" because of an emdash or something. and it's such bullshit bc ai pulls from our writing, so why should we have to change our writing styles because AI is stealing it? we shouldn't! and most of the time authors are not using ai, so stop charging into someone's inbox cursing them out when they're literally just writing and not using ai.

anyways, let's keep fandom spaces peaceful. if someone uses ai, fuck that. but a lot of people here don't, so be kind first and check your sources.

hmmm an idea I went too far with... as of right now since I'm still early in the reread a lot of the ideas I remember are pretty vague, I'll probably have a better answer once I'm done.

honestly I'm pretty happy with the ideas and themes in fall from eden. some ideas that may be extreme will be explained later too!! so I don't want to say something that will give a plotline away

I guess I'll say that I have heard some questions about *spoiler incoming* how Will was revived with a kiss and if that went too far... my answer is to keep reading when I start posting again!

everything in this story I wrote for a reason. the themes, the plotlines, even the numbers on the doors have meaning. so I can't say I overdid anything when everything has a purpose!

one thing I learned in my writing class is to not hold myself back. it's a great lesson to learn. as writers we may feel the need to hold ourselves back/censor/filter our writing because it may make people "uncomfortable" or it may be "too much" but we as writers have a story to tell. so we need to tell it!

of course some concepts may need to be altered, but I'm a firm denier of kill your darlings. I say mend your darlings. keep them with you even if they don't get published in the end.

anyways that's my very long answer! I'm sure there are things I will want to edit and mend to be better, but overall I'm happy with my story!!! thanks for the question, it was very insightful to answer!!! :D

the fall from eden reread has officially started!!

I've decided to provide commentary of my thoughts while reading it, as the author!

spoiler warning for fall from eden, my byler fanfiction!

Chapter One is interesting, because originally it started with Will and El running straight away with no introduction.

the introduction I wrote weeks later. I was thinking about how I wanted to finish fall from eden, specifically the final paragraphs and how it would wrap up.

I then wrote what will be the final paragraphs.

not to spoil too much, but I decided to reflect the introduction in the ending, so if u wanna taste of the end, have a look at the beginning! it'll be a callback to the intro to finalize the circle of the story.

everything will tie together quite nicely!

it's really nice to reread Will and El's interactions because we haven't gotten those too much later in the series. I plan on remedying that very soon.

Will is so cool with the shotgun! I remember LOVING writing the first action scenes, specifically the fall scene where Will lets go of El's hand.

that was the first scene of Fall from Eden that I ever thought of!

as for the flashbacks that Will remembers as his "life flashes before his eyes" most of them were thought of on the spot with no planning. before writing the scene, I had a vague timeline that this story would cover and some of those scenes were inspired by said timeline.

otherwise, the scenes were all off the head and would later become their own flushed out scenes, such as chapter 8's bully scene where Will beats up Troy.

there were a few scenes that I added later, though. I believe after chapter 9 I added a few more scenes that I wanted to include in the first chapter's foreshadowing. I haven't gone back and done major edits, so this one is one of the few.

chapter two was also such a joy to write, if I recall correctly, I wrote these chapters back to back.

it took me awhile to determine if I wanted this only in Will's POV or if I wanted Mike too, or any other characters! originally I had three povs: Will, Mike, and a bonus El chapter. in fact, chapter 11 was going to be El's chapter! (cliche) it was going to be an outside perspective of Mike and Will's return from the upside down and her helping Will recover his memories of '83.

but then I decided to cut that out and just make it Mike and Will.

I'm really happy that I did that because writing both of them is so fun! they're both unique and have such character that I love putting into their writing.

mike in this chapter is especially distraught, and then the balcony flashback was delicious.

I've also mentioned before in a previous post how I moved the "rules" flashback into chapter 2 from chapter 4. it just made sense and that way it wasn't too obvious that I was hinting at El's name being a secret, when Jenn would say it later, blowing Henry's cover.

this chapter also took a lot of planning as I had to get everyone's roles and personalities in place before writing since there would be so many characters Mike would be interacting with. I wanted to make sure that this story felt alive, therefore I tried to include as many voices as possible.

something interesting that I'm noting is the expectations I had for season 5, which I wrote into this. I really wanted apocalyptic vibes and an exploration of trauma. I wanted realistic trauma, deaths, and injuries.

...we didn't get that in season 5

hell, I remember studying fan theory videos and lore discussions so that I could create a realistic ending to stranger things before the finale came out. it was so hard, i felt as though there was steam coming out of my ears.

turns out I thought the ending out more than the duffers!

okay besides my own attitude towards the duffers, it's so cool to see the progress of my writing and the roots of this story.
