I firstly want to thank one of my close friends @enigmaphenomenon for helping me think about all of this and coming to these conclusions with me. I’m fairly certain we’re both 100% correct.
First of all, Ardyn and Aera are in love and they’re engaged. It’s not Somnus who’s the fiance.
There’s no way that Ardyn is not the fiance. Ardyn would have no need to apologize if the fiance Aera was talking about was Somnus. The faces Ardyn makes at her, the tears he sheds for her, his gentleness, and the same way she does these things to him. It’s obvious they’re engaged and in love. Plus, Somnus was back at the castle, where Aera was. He was there where she could find him, unlike Ardyn who was only around Aera from time to time as he traveled to heal people. It’s obviously Ardyn and Aera who are engaged and in love. Plus, Somnus himself says that Aera and Ardyn are engaged. Lol.
Aera lied to Somus about who the chosen king is.
Aera first tells Somnus that he can have her trust so she’s painting the picture towards him that what she’s about to tell him in the truth since she’s finally trusting him. But notice how she hesitates? If the Gods really chose her beloved Ardyn don’t you think that she would be jumping for joy and telling Somnus, HAHA FUCK YOU~ ARDYN IS KING BITCH.
But she’s not. She’s shocked at their decision. She hesitates. She’s standing there thinking what to do. You see– even if Aera and Ardyn are in love and engaged (even if they were to be married), as an Oracle she has to support the King’s vision and goals. If not it would create a civil war and that’s the last thing they need with the plague running around. Both Ardyn and Aera don’t agree with the way Somnus is doing things. So she lies. She doesn’t want to have to follow his ways, she wants to be with her lover, with Ardyn. She says it’s Ardyn who’s the chosen King and she probably has no idea that Somus will do what he did.
Noctis’ is Somnus’ in Ardyn’s eyes.
Somus took away everything Ardyn loved. More than anything his lover. The best way to hurt a man is to take away the woman he loves the most. Be it his mother, sister, or lover. Regis lost it when his wife Aulea sacrificed herself to save him, and Ardyn loses it with his fiancee sacrifices herself to save him. Noctis is Somnus to Ardyn, remember that Ardyn is the one who came into the chamber to talk to Regis about Noctis and Luna being together. He wanted them to fall in love, he wanted to take everything away from Noctis because, in turn, he feels like he’s beating out Somnus. Ardyn is so full of rage and it’s all directed towards Somnus but he’s taking it out on Noctis and Luna.
When Ardyn sees Luna, he sees Aera. As we can see in the images below.
Ardyn could have hurt Luna at any time. But he didn’t want to, because he wanted to rip her away from Noctis just like Somus (who he sees Noctis as) did to him. Ardyn is pissed at Somnus. Noctis looks like Somnus, Noctis is a direct descendant from Somnus and NOCTIS is the true king. The king of light the crystal chose.
He stabs Luna in front of Noctis to torment him because Ardyn is taking out the hatred he has for his brother out on Noctis. He’s taking away from Noctis what someone once took away from him. His bride.
Because Noctis looks like Somnus, was chosen by the crystal, and is the king of light. Noctis is also engaged to a woman who looks like Aera. A woman who is completely devoted to Noctis just like Aera was devoted to Ardyn. Ardyn was never going to let Luna and Noctis live happily together because no one allowed him and Aera to. That’s why he stabs Luna and leaves her there to suffer! He stabs her in front of Noctis to torture HIM, the same way he was tortured.
That’s why Ardyn hates Noctis and Luna so much. Ardyn is projecting his hatred onto them. He’s taking all his anger out on Somnus’ look-alike. Just to spite Noctis. Just to get back at Somnus in some way, even if it means torturing people who had nothing to do with what happened. Even when Noctis goes back 10 years later, Ardyn creates an illusion of Luna’s body hanging from the ceiling from chains. Her dress looking significantly more torn than it actually was and she’s not wearing shoes. To get back at him, at Somnus, for the pain he had to feel and the loss he endured.
Aera’s and Luna’s scenes are parallel.
Back turned to them, standing in flowers. Somnus and Ravus like “WHO’S THE KING OUIOYUTYTD” both of them saying that the man those two don’t want to be king, IS KING. Both are brothers. Ravus is the blood brother, and Somnus the brother in law. Sylva dying is what fuels Ravus’ hate for Noctis and Regis and Aera dying fuels Ardyn’s hate for Somnus.
And the loss of his beloved makes him lose control.
…And even while he’s losing his mind, slowly dying. He still thinks of her. Eternally.
But luckily they’re both reunited in death <3
No wonder Ardyn wanted to die so badly.
