Imogene is a big ol’ history nerd. They’d always had an interest in it, but once the scandal of their father cheating on their mate broke and their family fell from grace they really dove into it. Imogene has done their best to keep the scandal from getting to them, but the divorce was rough. They took their mother’s name after everything was finalized, to spare themselves the pitying looks. As the years have gone on they’ve lessened, but they know there’s always going to be whispers behind their back.

Kam thought for a second. Sardonic wasn’t the exact word on the tip of their tongue, but it was definitely close. “Yeah, I think sardonic will work. Thanks!” They wrote it down but circled it to come back to later. Kam liked to write in their notebook, but it did take time to type it up for submission. “Eh, prose isn’t inherently formal, but Professor Armani can be a stickler for word choice. I have definitely expanded by vocabulary this semester!” It had killed Kam to get a C on one of their papers, but Armani really was helping them push their writing.

“Of course!” Imogene said, happy to help their fellow student out. They were glad to see another student that liked to write with pen and paper. So many students just did everything on the computer, these days. There was something so satisfying about writing by hand, the ink flowing across the page, words taking shape before their eyes. “That makes sense. Some of my history classes are like.” They were glad that they weren’t taking any English classes. “I’m sure that you’ve been learning some interesting new words!”

Ciara hmmed noncommittally. She definitely felt more in the wrong here, but maybe that was still the shame talking. She hadn’t drunk human blood in over a decade, but she still felt bad for what she had done and the deserved curse that came with it. “How can you do that?” she asked. “I mean, I know about magic powers of course, and it is quite cool, but how can you make light as a vampire?”  It never ceased to surprise her what was possible in the paranormal world. No wonder Imogene was interested in light, as it was their power.

Imogene shrugged. “I really couldn’t tell you. I just... can. The power just manifested one day and that was that. I’ve been studying it, obviously, and I don’t think that it has the same properties on vampires as actual sunlight does, but I’ve been cautious about it ever since.” They could still remember the mix of both thrill and terror when their powers had first manifested, and how they’d sworn off of human blood from that moment on.

𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐍 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐄𝐑

       𝐌𝐀𝐘𝐁𝐄 𝐈𝐓'𝐒 𝐃𝐔𝐄 𝐓𝐎 𝐀 𝐌𝐈𝐗 𝐎𝐅 the dragon that lives within him, and his already restless nature, but Vasil has a hard time staying still. The male always needs ways to channel that ENERGY, preferably through whatever physical activities he can engage in—Usually exercising and training ( and sex ). Unsurprisingly, because of this, he can often be found in the gym, lifting around three hundred pounds in weights or trying to break his own records of over on the lever. It’s also a good place to socialize and meet other fellow NON-HUMANS like him. This time around, the platinum haired youth decides to call it a day on exercising only because HUNGER is stronger at the moment.

Releasing a long breath, he drops from the lever and turns to the nearby bench, picking up the towel there to wipe off the sheen of sweat on his face. It was not difficult to discern the weight of various gazes on him but one in particular seems to be more pointedly PRESSING. Throwing the towel over his shoulder, Vasil turns in the direction of said gaze’s owner with an arched brow and an almost PROVOCATIVE smile; the same playfulness being reflected in the gleam of his violet eyes. ❝ Like what you see? ❞

The gym wasn’t somewhere that Imogene often found themselves, but exceptions were always made during Ludares season. They did a bit of their own training, but mostly they went there to help out their teammates. Which is how they ended up there now, but of course it wasn’t until Imogene had arrived at the gym that they’d received a text from their teammates saying that they weren’t going to be able to make it today. Of course. Imogene sighed, leaning against the bench they had been standing next to. Of course. They looked up, pinching the bridge of their nose. No need to get too mad about it. It happened.

Gathering their thoughts they looked around the room, debating on if they wanted to stay or get back to their studying when they found their gaze caught on a blond haired student. The way that the light was shining on their hair was captivating. Of course they would get caught staring. “Sorry, it’s just that the light and your hair are doing some really interesting things.”

          Sia was not used to the way things were done here at college. She might seek her brother out if she wasn’t determined to do this on her own. Sometimes she wondered if her cousin was struggling the way she was. Had her own parents struggled fitting in at any point? It wasn’t as if she wanted to be struggling with this. “Is this supposed to be one of those times or am I just struggling to adjust?” Was it that obvious that she was a freshman? “Yeah, I’m a freshman. I haven’t decided on my major yet.”

“A bit, as a freshmen. College is a hard transition, but it harder for some than others. Depends on what sort of school you went to beforehand. I think those who went to boarding schools have an advantage, because they’re not away from home for the first time, used to dorms and having to manage their own schedules.” Imogene said, thinking back to her own freshman year and how she’d seen her classmates struggle, and how she herself had struggled when she first was sent off to Katmere Academy, although she had had more support then than incoming college students did. “Do you have any majors in mind?”

          “Huh,” they shrugged. They had never done anything like this before. There was only the one fair in their town that Dain and their family attended and it was the festival for Mothman, so that was that. “I guess there’s no harm in trying something.” There were a lot of things that Dain had never done before in their lifetime. Some people found it odd, but honestly their family was a bit eccentric anyways, so they didn’t really mind. “Well, yeah. Ma thought it was better that we read and listened to the radio. We had television, but I never liked it. My dad was always away on some work trip, so we entertained each other with stories. Or you know, looking for cryptids in the woods. And then when we finally did get internet, I just sort of preferred books and talk radio. But I realize I’m weird. When you grow up in a town like mine, small and kinda in the middle of nowhere, things are done differently. What about you? What kind of place did you grow up in?”

“Fantastic!” Imogene said, clapping her hands together. She listened as they talked about their childhood. Honestly, it sounded nice. Having a family like that, that seemed to care about each other? Imogene couldn’t relate. Even the happy memories from before her parents split were tainted now, knowing that her father had been cheating on her mother, that he had had another family the whole time. “It sounds nice.” She told them. “Oh, my childhood was nothing like that. I never really lacked for toys or playmates, but I can’t say that there was a whole lot of joy. I spent a lot of time at court, until a scandal involving my family broke.”

Ben: It was probably some idiot who thought it was funny

Ben: I don't want to put you in danger, but yes, I do want company.

Imogene: Possibly. Considering the date today, highly likely. We'll know once they decide to update us.

Imogene: Okay, then I will be there within half an hour. :)

Ben: Yeah. I guess. Not sure I expected this from adults.

Ben: Are you nearby? Don't bother if you aren't.

Imogene: Well they don't know who did it yet. It could have been a freshmen. They're not really adults.

Imogene: Benjamin. Don't worry about where I am. Do you want some company?

          “And I recognize that I am boring, yet I like boring, so I won’t change,” he replied, trying not to roll his eyes. Ben did like being the way he was, even if he was a nervous wreck most of the time. “A shame really. I thought maybe I’d bore you enough at some point so you’d swap schools,” he said with a playful tone. Honestly, he probably was the worst friend since he never did anything fun. Ben spent too much free time studying rather than doing anything fun with any friends. “Only because I prefer to find my own person to kiss rather than pay someone to kiss me. And they always have the most boring women working them.” It was a joke mostly because it wasn’t like he found any woman of interest in the dating department. What he was not prepared for was Imogene to kiss his cheek. Great, now he’d probably doubly get the attention of those women he wasn’t interested in. “Do you have something to wipe that off with?” Knowing the lipstick would leave behind a mark. “Can we go make heart paper chains?”

“And I love that about you.” Imogene reassured Ben. It really didn’t bother her that Ben was boring. She could be boring too. Well, she didn’t think that she was boring, but she knew that when she started going off on her history tangents that folks found it to be boring. “You’re never getting rid of me now, Waters. We’re simply stuck together for the rest of eternity.” No matter who either of them ended up marrying, if they married anyone, there would always be room for one of her oldest and dearest friends in her life, heart, and home. “Well, they are generally staffed by volunteers. So maybe it says more about the people who decide to work at the booth, than the people who visit it. Most people don’t go because they are that desperate for a kiss, or interaction with another person, but because they want to support a good cause.” Imogene couldn’t help the laugh that slipped out. She’d known what Ben’s reaction was going to be to her kissing his cheek, but she did it anyhow. “Oh come on now, don’t be a baby about it. It’s just a little bit of lipstick. It’s Valentine’s day. Celebrate a little!” She patted his cheek, making no move to dig out a tissue for him. “Yes! That sounds like a wonderful idea.” She said, steering them in that direction.

Short on time? Oh God, immortality. That was something Ciara had yet to process, having been able to blend with humans this far. Living forever felt much more daunting than dying somewhere in her 80s. Could she live forever or just a couple hundred years? The young immortal didn’t know, and she shut that train of thought down before she spiraled.

The vampire felt like she had every reason to be ashamed. She was a rational person and had just let some terrifying base instinct take over. The student had just been showing off a very cool power. “No, no, you’re fine; I shouldn’t have freaked out.” She didn’t remove her hands from her mouth until she felt her fangs retract. She then started slowly, at human speeds, re-approaching the light-bringer.  “We were literally just talking about how great light is, so how could you have known I’m a vampire?”

“Well we can either agree that we are both at fault, or neither.” Imogene said. They really did feel bad that they had freaked the other out, even as accidentally as it had been. And there was really nothing for the other to be ashamed about. “I mean, just because we were talking about it doesn’t mean you can’t have adverse reactions to balls of light suddenly appearing in a strange students hands. As cool as it might be. Really, I understand. It won’t be the first time some other vampire has run away from me and my tricks,”

Imogene: Crazy what’s going on, isn’t it? Imogene: You got the update from the VA, right? Don’t go outside. Imogene: Do you want some company?

Rosie shrugged a little bit

“I guess it’s not as widely known then? I mean personally would you go around bragging that you could be the size of a walnut when your reputation is this giant fire breathing lizard drowned in gold and jewels?” Rosie asked them raising a brow it had to have been a matter of pride, Rosie was sure that she couldn’t be the only one especially since her brothers picked on her a little.

“So if you don’t mind my asking, what are you studying?” Rosie asked she noticed the other was picking up the highlighters and everything so she started helping picking up the pens and markers that she found around her figuring she had intruded the least she could do was help.

“I mean I could understand not telling the vampires, but it’s something that could come in handy, for spying and the like, and I haven’t seen mention of it in any of the historical texts that I’ve read.” Imogene wasn’t trying to debate with the dragon, obviously she knew better than they did. But it was just... odd that they hadn’t even seen mention of it in any of the books and manuscripts they’d been allowed to read at the Katmere Academy archives. And considering what that place was the dragons it was just... a bit shocking, is all. Again, they could understand if perhaps the dragons had cleared out some things before the castle turned into the school, but to have not a single mention of anything in any sort of historical record? That was a bit strange.

“What, you can’t tell from all these tomes?” They joked, patting their stack of books. “I’m a history major. I’ve also got an art minor, but that doesn’t require half the books that history does.”

          As much as she absolutely did not want to be away from her family, this whole being a supernatural thing was a bit interesting. Well as long as people left her alone and didn’t stare at her like she was the biggest foreigner in this school. She was probably not the only person on this campus who was far from home, since this was an island of wix or whatever. Alastríona looked back in the direction the boy ran. “Staring and shite.” She assumed that they were just staring because she was pretty, but maybe it was the whole speaking a different language. “Well he’s barkin’ up the wrong tree, mate.” She truly felt like she was not supposed to be here.

Imogene sighed. “Unfortunately, a lot of them are like that. I’d like to say that it’s mostly just the younger ones, who are being exposed to more people than they have been before, some of them far away from home for the first time, but even the seniors can be pretty blatant.” They shook their head. You’d think, being part of a supernatural community, they would have learned not to stare at others for differences or whatever, but that clearly wasn’t the case. College was college, no matter how you looked at it. “That said there really are some great people on campus, and people like that really do learn to smarten up. We’re all growing and learning, right?”

          “I like that it’s in the middle of nowhere and boring,” he pointed out. To him that was always a good thing. However there were plenty of people that didn’t feel the same way. “I’ve been going to Katmere schools since I was in high school, I don’t think I will change that anytime soon.” Ben liked Katmere schools. They were less chaotic than some of the other schools. He had always liked that they were sort of exclusive and appreciated the small amount of students. The university was much of the same, but still a university and had it’s own chaos to deal with. “I… don’t think the kissing booth seems like the right place for me. Although I suppose it does matter who they have working on.” He preferred not paying for kisses if he could help it. “Right, well. I guess we better get to it then, huh.”

“Yeah, because you’re boring.” Imogene teased, nudging him playfully in the side. “But I’m boring too, so I love you any way. Guess that means you’re going to be stuck with me, then, because I am not going to be restarting this degree.” It would be a pain to get access to a lot of the sources that she was using if she was a student at another university, as well. “Yes, I rather imagined that a kissing booth wouldn’t be up to your speed, guess it’s a good thing you have me, then.” Imogene said, slinging an arm around his shoulder and pulling him close so that she could press a kiss to his cheek, leaving a faint lipstick mark behind. (Because of course she’d dug out the reddest one that she had in honor of Valentine’s Day.) “Yes, let’s get started. You lead and I’ll follow!”

          “That… sounds… unusual. And this is fun? There’s nothing weird about the sand? It isn’t magic or anything?” This sounded like a strange activity and they didn’t know what the point of it was. Though maybe that was just their small town upbringing. “Oh, interesting. I guess. The only Valentine I had was my mom growing up. And well…. mothman once, but we don’t talk about that.” Dain looked around. “Alright. Let’s do this sand art thing. I never really thought I was sheltered, but I guess not having internet at home until I was like fifteen probably helped with it.”

“Yes it’s fun. No, there’s nothing weird or magic about the sand.” Imogene thought it was such a interesting art form. She wasn’t that skilled at it, but half the fun of it was just having fun with the experience of it. It was something delicate, one wrong move and you messed the whole thing up. But there was something incredibly satisfying about it, as well. Imogene felt a pang of sadness, when they said that their mom was their only Valentine growing up. She wanted to ask about mothman, but wasn’t going to pry. “You didn’t have internet until you were fifteen?”

“Wow, that’s really cool. It’s impressive to have multiple mediums.” Ciara didn’t have an eye for the visual arts. She dabbled in music, but even then she could only play one instrument, the violin. Ciara watched in interest, feeling that the other student was about to show her something. Even though they were standing feet away from a beam of sunlight, the concentrated ball of light set off something primal in the vampire. Before she could process, she had darted off halfway down the hallway at a super human speed and turned to hiss at the light, her fangs extending. She realized what she had done in a mixture of horror and shame. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry,” she said, covering her mouth and fangs with her hands.

“I figured that I might as well try most mediums once. It’s not like I’m going to be short on time.” They said, with a bit of a laugh. Look, being a vampire and making jokes about immortality were always funny. ‘But will there be enough time?’ I don’t know, how’s eternity sound? Classic.

Imogene quickly extinguished the ball of light, when they saw the other student’s reaction. “No, no, I’m sorry. I should have given you more warning!” They apologized. “I just figured that you were good with light. I shouldn’t have assumed. I’m really sorry. There’s no reason for you to be ashamed!”
