imogen smiles at the younger girl, sitting down across from her at the table with her order in hand. “ gonna be honest here...i know we said this was like, a little coffee date for the two of us, but i ended up getting tea. whoops. ” she expressed, laughing.

imogen had been looking forward to christmas all year; her favorite holiday, and now she was celebrating with one of her favorite people. she’d worked on her gift for noelle for months on end, slaving away at it for hours on end to make sure it was absolutely perfect for the younger girl. extending the bright package out to her friend, she watched on excitedly as the present was opened, revealling the scrapbook she’d made filled with pictures of them, photocopies of the notes and doodles they’d shared that imogen had kept for years on end, memories filling the book from cover to cover. “ i wanted you to have all of our good times with you in one place, that way if you can’t break out of the house for whatever reason, you’ll still have somewhere to get lost. ”

the two girls are sitting in imogen’s room, door locked (aliza never minded) and both on the floor. imogen looks over at her younger friend, offering her a smile. she knows that noelle’s here because there’s something she’s running from, faster than her little legs can carry her, and this is the place imogen has offered to her as refuge. “ alright, ” imogen announces as she protrudes a pack of magic markers and disney coloring book from underneath her bed. “ you’re in charge of the little mermaid pictures, i’ve got aladdin. every other princess, we’ll just have to get real creative on making them look like us. ”

imogen blinks once, then twice, carding a hand through her hair. “ okay, ” she says, her voice tearing through the silence. she takes a deep breath, squaring her shoulders and taking on that big sister role she’d stepped into all those years ago — she’d take care of ellie, no matter what. “ we’ll get through this. just like we always do. ” the space between them vanishes as imogen pulls noelle in for a hug, squeezing her tightly just like she did when they were kids. she wasn’t going anywhere.
