i mostly am interested in finding peace

a wall grew out of the earth and surrounded my lonely soul.

dark green -- all brambles, and roots -- it hardly could be seen

through the cracks in the vines.

thick turf, much like a childhood quilt,

covers the crevasses and chipped-away bits in the stone.

it is a quiet place where no one treads

and where no light goes into

or out of.

fear, 

with its claws like telephone wire that wrap the whole world in sound

sits in an alcove carved into the pillars.

he is shrouded, hiding himself away, but always present.

he looks at me, and i look at him.

neither of us intimidates the other

in this place where i confine us both;

      condemn us both.

how long have i allowed myself to lie here?

the grass was so soft when i first came

but it has died with no one to come and water it.

i turn away from a knock at the old, weathered gate --

dust has collected on its tired surface,

and its hinges have rusted into oblivion.

the dirt around me is hard and dry

it cakes my skin.

in this confinement, i have found quiet.

but i have never found peace.

he had a head full of thoughts so lovely,

they hid him away from the rest of the world.

when the girl at last became a statue,

the earth surrounded her with its gentle caress

in its attempt to bring life back into those gray eyes.

long lines of leaves

wove their way closer to her heart

if only she hadn't grown hard when she felt the ache

of a desperate season

if only she had let the earth love her

in its changing;

volatile

but constant.

her marble hands, which can no longer feel the vines as they curl

around her fingertips.

plucked from the side of the road you’ve walked

your whole life.

A breadth of land so green and silent that it seemed to bleed into the horizon, unbeknownst to the rest of the world beyond those rocky cliffs

“We only needed to look over our shoulders,” you said.

“No,” I replied, seeing the birds taking flight from the nearby pines. “The canyon needed only to call us onward until we were lost enough to find it.”
