Yet again, I made a thing and forgot to post it.
Still not over Xie Lian being like, either this is a regular teenager or a supreme ghost is hanging out with me for some reason, and that’s crazy cause I’m just a little guy, and then the reveal happens. He outright asks Hua Cheng, " Hey, why are you here, my friend?” And Hua Cheng outright tells him that it was to see him, but adds, in the out “or because I was bored,” because like he doesn’t want to come on too strong here, but Xie Lian just goes, " Oh, it must be the second one” and just carries on. He walked so Maomao could run, I swear.
Today is the year “anniversary” of the first PM’s sent between myself and ellewritesfanfiction and to celebrate this, we decided to write a fic and commission this beautiful piece of fan art by the wonderful hasuyawnn based on a scene in it.
The fic, Anniversary, is here and is part of our Forever universe so expect the usual balance of smut, sap, angst and feels!
Thanks Hasu for this incredible piece of art that we both adore and happy anniversary, ELLE! Here’s to another year, wifey!
Tbh germ theory DOES sound crazy. Like if you told a regency-era nobleman that tiny creatures lived on the surface of everything and THAT’S what causes consumption, they’d be like “ah, I see you are a lunatic. Would you reside in my hermitage? Rantings and ravings do so amuse my guests”
But if you told a Medieval person this they would probably go "Ah, so when the miasma settles on surfaces it gains evil life. I understand."
Yeah, actually, it would probably be pretty easy to explain germ theory to a Medieval person as tiny evil spirits that live on everything, but they can be purified by soap and water, or by alcohol, because that is why God has granted us those things. And because they can float in the air, if you cough or sneeze after they have infested you, that can cause them to infest others. And when you are sick, the angels God has deputized to defend the bodies of His beloved children are at war with the evil spirits, and, sadly, sometimes they lose, but the best way to help your angels win their battle is to rest, drink plenty (this would probably be small beer in this time period, not water, because the water was also infested), stay clean, and for the sake of God do not allow anyone to let your blood, for the angels need that blood in their war against the evil spirits. Bloodletting is good for some types of illnesses but not the kinds caused by the tiny evil spirits.
boiling as a sterilization measure is also easy to explain. water returns to the air when heated and it rises as steam back up to the floodgates of heaven; we know God created the world in seven days, He's not up there making more water every time it rains. it circulates. the returning of water to heaven also purifies the water of unclean and malign influences. you know wormy water from a muddy puddle will kill your kid. you know you wouldn't wade into a bog and have a slurp. water that remains in the low places of earth absorbs all that is unclean from our waste and it may also sponge up new diseases from hell, we're not totally sure about that one, but it seems likely. God set up the heavenly water cycle so that the earth's waters wouldn't totally fill up with gunk.
what does this have to do with boiling your surgical tools? well look, the boiling water releases bubbles of steam which carries the malign influences up to heaven. you boil a knife, you send all the miasmic particles off with the steam to heaven. if you rinse the knife off in a bucket the water isn't hot enough, the particles go into the water and then right back on to the knife. you gotta boil it to get the particles all the way away. how can a tool or rag or a bed have miasmic particles on it when you can't smell them? humans have a lousy sense of smell. look at your dog on the hunt. are there no rabbits in the woods just because you can't smell them? we know that miasma is carried on the air, and is what makes stench so dangerous, and we know that humans can't smell worth a damn compared to dogs cats horses etc. a dog can smell if a rat died in a corner of the room last week. you can't. do you think licking the spot where the rat died is going to go well for you? luckily, what humans lack in snout we make up for in brains. we have extra brains where our sniffers should have been. God set that up for a reason.
and why does a rinse with wine spirits work? man, look how fast alcohol evaporates. my guess is that because wine contains a lot more vice than water, it evaporates a whole lot faster, in sort of an equal and opposite way that a rock falls faster than a feather. if you want the miasmic particles to get off there FAST, you dunk it in something that's going back to heaven at a gallop.
what's up with honey? it just preserves things against corruption. doesn't clean them off. honey doesn't evaporate at all. probably because bees don't sin. it's not good for ridding a tool of particles-- it's sticky-- but fine for preserving anything you don't want to go to heaven OR hell. this is why you wash the wound with wine spirits or purified water FIRST, to sluice the miasma out, then slap the honey on AFTER. and boil the damn bandage, too. you wouldn't put a rotten door in a sound doorframe and expect it to keep out bandits, would you? cmon.
another important part of Xie Lian's character is he isnt just effortlessly kind/perfect, he MADE himself kind. like we know that he gets angry and hurt and for 800 years he chooses to be kind constantly, and his strength to actually be able to act on his hatred is what makes that so much more impactful.
i also love that he chose to be kind because of the water guy in Yong'an, and the most impactful part of that was that he wasnt even a nice guy - he was lowkey an asshole. like he was berating xie lian for being stabbed in the path and just lying there like an idiot but just the fact that he took time to yell at him and give him some water made Xie Lian choose to save everyone because that man was a stranger who gained nothing from this but still CHOSE to give him water.
and that meant everything to xie lian.
especially since it was WATER - the very thing that had started the war to begin with (Yong'An's droughts) and the very thing Xie Lian tried to give back to them at the start of the war (with the rainmaster's help). it was kind of like a full circle redemption for him - because his care and kindness was shown by gifting water, and Yong'Ans kindness was shown by the vendor giving water back to him (even if he didnt know about xie lians original gift).
and so he tries to stop the plague, even if the backlash would have gone to him instead. imagine how the story would have gone if Wu Ming didnt stop them in time either, because Xie Lian cant die - so what would have happened to him?
wu ming would still have been trying to get to him as the spirits descended - surrounding xie lian as he wu ming screamed for Dianxia to move to fight back to let him take it instead. but as he finally reached him xie lian turned back and smiled before pushing him away because this was his punishment and he was not going to let Wu Ming take it for him.
so xie lian gets slowly torn apart - reopening all the cuts from the hundred swords scene but he keeps on smiling because Wu Ming is crying and they cant both be falling apart? eventually, after what seems like years, golden light erupts around him and Xie Lian just ascends right then but this is when he stops smiling - reaching out for Wu Ming because he can't leave now he doesnt deserve to be in heaven.
he ascends in a similar fashion to his 3rd in the books - widespread destruction, massive crowds expecting some noble lord in the height of his glory but all they see is Xie lian ascending as a true God of Misfortune. and he looks fucking horrible - blood dripping into a pool around him and a wicked black sword held loosely in his hand.
the Jun Wu arrives and their interaction goes similarly to the book version - they talk briefly and the descend to kill Bai Wuxiang, but by the time they get back there Wu Ming is gone and Xie Lian immediately assumes that he was killed by White No-face. this is what prompts him to ask for banishment, because he blames himself for Wu Mings 'death' (even though hes not truly dead - he just ran low on powe and had to disappear for a while).
they briefly fight, but with Xie Lian shackled and beaten it ends quickly with his banishment and the adding of his second Cursed Shakle (the one that dissolves his luck).
so from then on canon goes pretty similarly, xie lian reascends 800 years later and shenanigans ensue - but with the main change that Hua Cheng feels more guilt and Xie Lian is a bit more traumatised. he was pretty beaten up when he ascended, so most people didnt recognise him and he becomes somewhat of an urban legend around heaven - about the bloodstained God of Misfortune.
sooo yeah :) sorry if this doesnt make any sense but what can you do

A drawing I did some time ago for the Frieren collab I was a part of I decided to draw Frieren with her teacher, Flamme, and later on with her apprentice, Fern. Having the passage of time as a central focus of the series, I depicted different phases in Frieren's life through the four seasons, each season reflecting a different stage of life 🌻🍂❄️🌷
