NASTAR KEJU ala INA COOKIES INDONESIA

Today I want to tell you about one of the cookies from INA COOKIES BANDUNG - INDONESIA (Retail-Surabaya). It is NASTAR KEJU.

The name 'NASTAR' came from the word 'ananas' which means pineapple, and 'taart' which means tart, or simply, Pinapple Cookies. This cookie is also one of the special cookies for Idul Fitri celebration in Indonesia or even for celebrating Christmas.

In the old time, Nastar was more like Chinese family ritual, where every family made this cookies by themselves, using their own recipe that they had from generation to generation. But, as the time goes by, this ritual gradually vanish. And the bakers take this chance to sell the Nastar they made months before Chinese New Year. And nowadays, many bakeries, cake shops, or cookie shops have Nastar on their windows at anytime. So, we do not have to spent many hours baking, or wait for months until Chinese New Year only to taste this amazingly tasty cookies.

The original Nastar has round shape with a cut of raisin or clove on top of it. But, as usual, INA COOKIES INDONESIA, always want to make a difference. We shape this Nastar like half moon shape. So, it has extra filling than the original, which Chinese people believe that it brings more fortune. And we sprinkle some parutan KEJU (English: grated cheese) on top of the cookies to make it even more special

KAASTENGEL ala INA COOKIES INDONESIA

Today I want to tell you about one of the cookies from INA COOKIES BANDUNG - INDONESIA (Retail-Surabaya). It is KAASTENGEL.

The word kaastengels actually came from the word kaas and stengels in Dutch. Kaas means cheese and stengels means stems, straws, or bars. So kaastengels means cheese stems, cheese straws, or, well, cheese bars.

This cookies originally came from Netherlands. They introduced this cookies to Indonesian people around 17th century to 20th century. The original kaastengels has rectangle shape. But, the KAASTENGEL ala INA COOKIES INDONESIA has a little innovation in shape. It is shaped like a ribbon loop, so it is different from the one from Netherlands.

And, we, Indonesian people, often make  or buy  this cookies for special occasions, like Eid al-Fitr. Because at that 1st Syawal, we always have our relatives come visiting and asking each other forgiveness.
