One thing I learned way too late in the game for my own good was that you can effectively increase your self esteem by doing estimable things. Therefore, I have signed you up to build homes for the homeless during your entire summer vacation. A primary behavioral ethos in my family is never to be “ugly.” That is what poor behavior, especially anger and harsh words and hitting my siblings even in self defense, was called. “Don’t be ugly,” my mother would say. My grandmother, on my father’s side, is a deeply racist woman who, I imagine, has never “been ugly” a day in her life, and would dispute the term “racist,” as she was and is always polite to the help. When she was having my father and uncle she found herself shocked to be in the delivery ward not once but twice with the same obviously poor woman. What I’m saying is that this is everything to do with why people like my family don’t consider ourselves racist: the Klan is racist and we would never. We behave decently. The ugly fringe necessarily constitutes the limits of the genteel center.
