I / feel worse. I can’t remember how / I felt, so perhaps I feel better.
Frank O’Hara, from The Collected Poems; “Anxiety,” (via violentwavesofemotion)
( flippancies. )
words are weapons ( kids with tennessee accents would yell, hey, it’s wacky jackie, and she’d feel herself shrink. ). she’s learned to equip herself with every snide retort and quip in the dictionary. every sharp response only builds up her arsenal, each word a bullet trained to shoot with utmost precision. as a trader, it’s an asset, honeyed words earning her the winning bargain in every deal, but even before that, words have always meant more. it’s strength. there’s so much power in knowing exactly what to say to get under a person’s skin.
but around david, she feels disarmed. the head comes empty, and the heart beats useless litanies — pulsations drumming the most honest of rhythms: i’m sorry. i wish i didn’t ruin things. i wish i stayed. any response she comes up with sounds pathetic to her own ears. logic, she finds, drowns in all the feelings she denied existed. it was enough of a curse to feel, but around david, she feels so much, and so many things at the same time — confusion, anger, wistfulness, regret — every emotion works against her and makes her WEAK. words are weapons, but when her demon of a heart consumes her, her weapon of a mind stays quiet.
she manages a sentence, at least. “didn’t expect you to go for small talk, adeyemi.” in her attempt at disguising her nervousness, what was meant to be a tone of casual contempt turns more aggressive, more like anger. way to fuck up, brosnan. “where’ve i been? three years gives you lotsa time to be everywhere. see that tacoma over there?” she says, pointing to the pick-up truck parked nearby. “ain’t she pretty? her name’s shelley. she takes me aaaaall over. just yesterday she ran over like four or five biters on the way to a trade run. ain’t that sick?”
this isn’t the same. the act never feels like an act when it’s anybody else, but david knows her— no, he knew her, before this facade, before she built up a shell of apathy, before she donned LAYER over LAYER of feigned facetiousness to protect herself from ever being broken. he’d known her when she was just fresh out of tennessee, a place that had cast her out and branded her a pariah for merely thinking differently. the girl david knew was different from the girl standing before him now; she’s no longer vulnerable, because vulnerable is no longer something she allows herself to be. but she was, once, and david knew it. she’d opened up to him, and in return, he’d offered her tenderness. how disgusting.
half of her wants it back, the unadulterated, innocent friendship they shared before her dumbfuck heart turned everything to shit. “i actually gotta ditch and pick something up at the capitol,“ she says. part of her doesn’t want him to leave. part of her wants him there with her, blasting hip hop on the tacoma’s barely working stereo. the image is as inviting as it is frustrating. ”i mean,” she adds, with feigned indifference. “you could come if you want. i don’t suppose you’re doin’ anything, no? figured after all that happened burger king and victoria’s secret won’t need a mall cop protecting ‘em no more.”
david wanted to stand as a formidable source of the casualties from his past. he watched as friends and family left, died, moved onto a new realm, and he LOST it all. his parents he lost at an early age, and beyond that, it was hard to fathom that it would happen again. but it did, and he could recall the nights he spent staying up, refusing to eat or sleep until all the blood was wiped clean. the long overdue mental breakdown of a guy that longed for UNATTAINABLE happiness. at the time, he felt lost and scared, despite already being a grown adult.
none of those feelings had truly left him, even with the three-year difference. hell, he might even say that he felt WORSE. especially with having seen two ghosts from his past appear like apparitions. the confirmation of them ever being real was light as he relied on the emotions that came with it—useless words sparking pain & misery for him as he committed himself to being the sensitive one, to not being able to UNDERSTAND them because too much time had passed. the problem was, he knew jackie at one point. their souls were intertwined in the most beautiful way one’s soul could be—FRIENDSHIP. he treasured it, nurtured it until it blossomed into something more. something romantic in one way and confusing in another.
he had learned earlier in the year that a friendship so deep could not just be picked up and glued back together. he had learned that some fragments were so microscopic that even tweezers couldn’t pick them up and place them back properly. the hairline FRACTURES of a lost love wasn’t something that could ever return back to normal, even if you did your best to repair this. he knew this from olivia, whose dynamic was similar ENOUGH to transfer the message across and wear it shamefully across his chest. he was alone, and even with jackie there in person, something told him that the same principals applied.
❝ people change, i guess, ❞ david replied cautiously. her tone conveyed a certain emotion that he was UNFAMILIAR with, but he could only assume it was something mixed with scorn. what did he do to her ? the question beckoned him, URGED him to look back on the past and pick apart each and every action. he was willing to take the blame for something he didn’t do, so he took on her anger, accepting it as something he probably DESERVED. after all, he had lived through enough years to be labeled a sinner, so it wasn’t too far off to ASSUME that he had been in the wrong.
❝ nice, ❞ his gaze followed to the car, a simple nod following. it seemed like such a JACKIE car, something that she would obviously be drawn to. it reminded him of the days he used to spend with her in the passenger seat as they sang stupid songs and LAUGHED. if he had known that there would be so much pain down the road, he would have stopped the car and stayed in it longer, learned to take mental pictures of the moment so he could remember it BETTER. still, his memory served enough, and while it wasn’t as detailed as he would have liked, it was there—a surprising feat once one realized how many concussions he had suffered from playing football.
david gave a smile to her offer—genuine, yet somehow FAKE. it’s gentle and hardly there, but it exists. despite the catastrophe caused by the loss of time spent with jackie, he’s willing to let it slide for now and PRETEND like nothing ever happened. ❝ yeah, alright. i’ll go with you. ❞ it almost feels silly doing this, like children acting as if the world never ended in the first place, all of the heartbreak gone, but the awkwardness that sat heavy between them remaining the same. ❝ you got a camp or somethin’ ? ❞ he questioned with a tilt of his head as he slowly began to take a few steps over to the tacoma before he stopped. was it WRONG to feel jealous of her ? based on this interaction alone, it already felt like she was better off without him, HAPPIER, even.

@inardescos — closed starter.
she remembers her first kiss with such UNPLEASANT clarity — fourteen years old at a high school party playing spin the bottle with a senior boy who slammed his sloppy mouth into hers. it seemed exciting, at first, but the boy pushed harder than what felt comfortable, and she’d shoved him aside, saying i’m not into this anymore, but he grabbed her wrist and under his breath whispered come on don’t be such a tease babe —
her fist collided with his throat.
later, she comes to the conclusion that boys do not deserve tenderness. boys are mere playthings to be toyed with and discarded as she pleased. after all, did they not treat women the same way? who gave a shit what men felt? jackie turns the tables and uses their carnal desires against them, taking more than she could ever give, drawing satisfaction from knowing that control belongs to her.
( somewhere along the way, something changes. )
boys do not deserve tenderness, but david adeyemi is not like any boy.
the memory remains vivid: skin touches skin and her breathing halts; a rush of adrenaline fades, and this foreign sense of CURIOSITY rises to her throat — a longing so soft and tender yet so heavy to bear: she wants to kiss him. she wants to kiss him, but she doesnt, because she doesn’t know if he wants it, because it’s wrong, because she’s just seventeen and he’s twenty-one, because they could ruin this, because she could ruin him, and above all because david was kind, and kind boys did not belong to girls with teeth for hearts.
the memory slaps her in the face. it’s been years since their last encounter, but somehow the regret comes back as strong as it had been before she mastered SUPPRESSING it. now, the situation demands words, a greeting or acknowledgement, at least, but in a rare moment of vulnerability, jackie finds words FAILING her.
still, she refuses to break. taking a breath, she forces a nonchalant smile on her face and lets a CUTTING gaze fall on david. an attempt at eloquence follows. “yo, loser,” she says. “long time no see.”
CONFUSION—it’s a word that could easily sum up just about everything having to do with david. looking back on his life, he felt as though he had done his best to be the man his biological parents had wanted him to be. he was kind, loving, and caring for everyone he met, but the more he reflected upon his past, the more he REMEMBERED—and the funny thing about remembering ? it was always painful.
he could remember the FIRST time he saw a flicker of red hair in cheyenne. it had been some girl on the playground, someone BIGGER than him, and someone who would make sure he knew that. it was the principle of it all that set him back—the notion that a girl could hit a boy but a boy couldn’t hit back. he remembered that day as it was: a girl, a fist, a boy, and a black eye. that was all it had been, NOTHING MORE.
flash forward a few years, and red hair slowly began to mean SOMETHING more to him. it wasn’t that girl that hit him—she had moved away—but it was a girl who had come to cheyenne. red hair, freckles, and a BRILLIANT smile that somehow made everything alright. with jackie brosnan, david found peace. between their stupid, immature bets and competitive streak, the young boy found a FRIEND.
she had come to him when he needed her MOST—shortly after he had been kicked out of college for never going to class. he had been labeled a FAILURE, and he was shipped back to the city that he had come to love. they had coddled him back from grief after his parents had died, but this somehow felt DIFFERENT. his glory had faded away with time, and he was no longer that popular guy. he was merely living in the SHADOW of his own success, and the darkness of a past in which there was no escape from.
& perhaps that was why it hurt so much. he had seen flashes of that same red hair since, only it wasn’t HER, and some part of him knew that. he could single her out in a crowd of millions just by the way she made him feel—confused, sad, angry, lonely. yet at the same time, her presence alone did raise the GOOD parts of him. the parts of him that felt safe enough to be genuinely happy, courageous, and gentle. but now, none of that felt RIGHT. she was the light in a dark room, the beacon of hope he DESPERATELY clung to.
❝ YO, ❞ he mirrored back slowly, eyes narrowing. it hurt being approached with that NONCHALANCE—confirmation in the belief that he meant NOTHING to her, or, at least, that he had significantly less value than he had previously thought. ❝ yeah, long time no see. where you been ? ❞ david had always been relatively good with small talk. working at the mall, he got used to approaching people all the time. but jackie ? she wasn’t the person he WANTED to have small talk with. she was the person he wanted to know and the girl that he, at one point, wanted to be with.

Kiss + 9 ( for david ! )
kiss on their forehead. ft. { @inardescos }
SEEING HIM AGAIN was not what she planned on doing after that first shaky encounter. the one where her limbs shook and shivered until she felt hollow and SPINELESS. until her breath was caught between clenched teeth and nerves sharpened to a deadly point. the one where she ALMOST lost herself – again.
if olivia is honest; she doesn’t want to see him – re-experience the joy that is known as DAVID ADEYEMI. she doesn’t want to feel the normality and WARMTH of unadulterated friendship. ( how can she? everything she touches turns to ash and tastes like REGRET. ) but the sensation comes easy. and so does comfort. and so does something akin to adoration.
pain, however, outweighs the other flourishing emotions. he’s a splinter on her side that chases her down every other week. a habit she can’t shake – LIKE SMOKING. she knows he’s not as bad as the nicotine in her lungs, she knows this PROXIMITY they are re-establishing signifies some form of HEALING; or a close cousin of that, anyways. she knows that, in the long run, this is good – this is HEALTHY ( she hasn’t seen something, had something, wholly healthy in a scarily long time ). what she doesn’t know is how to take him in without watching her walls crumble, and walls are followed by strength. she doesn’t know how to be strong without being lonely; as if by some unknown reason SOLITUDE and FORTITUDE are synonymous. he tells her they’re not.
but loneliness is a suit olivia doesn’t look flattering in. loneliness is too big, too wide, too long. loneliness smells like the suitcase in her grandmother’s closet that’s been collecting dust and mold since the 70s. like cold mornings and misty evenings. like humidity between her toes. UGLY. uncomfortable. she’s often envious of those who have mastered the art of sowing that suit; stitching it so beautifully that it hugs their every curve. the SLOPE of her own body, however, morphs into something far less feminine, far less HUMAN. loneliness makes her nebulous.
– and david’s hands are a pair artisans. they structure her limbs and align the broken, JAGGED edges that have made a home against her skin. they smooth rough patches. they construct a dress of fine silk and vibrant colors. that fits her frame perfectly. they make her feel…beautiful. or TOLERABLE at the very least. ( tolerable is more than she ever hoped for. )
when he asks about the kids – a WOUND that refuses to close – she flinches. the HISS that would normally sprout from her lips is pushed away by the honey in his voice. david never aims to harm, he aims to help. he sits beside her on the floor of her living room like they used to in college – cool beers of young adulthood replaced by lukewarm water that once made her CRINGE.
she wants to spit at him – tell him all the reasons why HE SHOULD MIND HIS OWN FUCKING BUSINESS AND KEEP HIS NOSE OUT OF HER LIFE. she wants to push and shove and put d i s t a n c e. she also wants to be BETTER. she can’t do it all. her lips clamp closed; a thin line of negation. her head shakes. finally, a croak, a hoarse whisper in the dim light. “ i can’t talk about that. “
he stares. he licks his chapped lips. he nods. he adjusts his position, places tucks loose hair behind her ear and moves to press his lips against her forehead. HE UNDERSTANDS. olivia sighs; terrified of the closeness but braving it, assimilating it, just the same. there are things not ready to see the light of day and despite their long process of re-acquainting ( has it been four – maybe five – months already? ), some secrets she rather keep under her tongue. she PROMISES herself she’ll tell him. someday. that day is just not today.

( apex-reiner. )
Reiner’s dangerous eyes cut into the boy, the cold metal pressing more into the other’s jaw as he tried to decide if the boy was telling the truth….but then again did it really matter? Reiner didnt really care who was a raider or not, he just wanted to make blood spill and if he looked like the good guy while doing it, then props.
The older man’s eyes flickered to see the boy watching some raiders moving by, making his hold ease up on the other’s clothing and pull his gun away. Eyes on his proper prey, Reiner slowly stepped away and reached in his pocket, pulling out a silencer. His steps were careful and quiet, eyes never leaving the raiders that were laughing amongst each other. When Reiner finally lifted his gun, they didnt know what hit them. Soft pops of air escaped the gun, sounding more like an air soft gun then one of deadly force. Two raiders dropped dead, crumpled like puppets without strings while the other yelped out and held his bleeding knee.
He wasnt going anywhere.
Snorting, Reiner flicked the safety on his gun, looking back at the boy. “You going to continue hiding or you going to help, boy?” He asked calmly as the raider hissed and cursed, trying to crawl away as he held his leg.
A deep sigh of relief passed his lips once he was released from the other’s hold. Of course, the panic was still there, but with the gun no longer held tight against his skin, David was able to let himself relax, if only for a BRIEF moment. Careful eyes watched the man as he proceeded to pull out a silencer, the familiar CRACK of gunshots being lulled to a dull pop. No matter how familiar or silent it was, nothing could ever erase the pure TERROR that accompanied witnessing a life being taken away.
David was no KILLER, nor was he a murderer. He did, however, have a past of VIOLENCE. A natural taste for vengeance had the tendency to run wild in his veins, and he’d be a liar if he said that those urges had dissipated long ago. In a world where violence was ENCOURAGED and necessary to survive, David found the fight to remain virtuous and well-intentioned was a difficult task to manage. But under certain circumstances—specifically, a scenario in which his home was nearly torn to SHREDS—David was willing to make an exception.
A hand pulled out his own gun from his pocket—a simple Glock 41. He hadn’t used it all that much, leaving a lot of the original bullets still there. After so many years in the outbreak, he couldn’t quite shake the familiar preference of a good old-fashioned fistfight. Hell, one could even argue that he ENJOYED it still—bruised, cracked, and bloodied knuckles with black eyes and broken ribs. Truly, there was nothing like it. But this needed to be QUICK enough for him to escape successfully.
The younger man emerged from his hiding place, gun aimed at a raider who had spotted him. There should have been a BANG as soon as he pulled the trigger, but there was NOTHING. Just the soft click of a jammed gun and nothing more. ❝ Fuck, ❞ he muttered to himself before he wound his arm back and successfully used the grip of his gun to hit the man on the side of his head with EXCESSIVE force. What he lacked in gun knowledge, David made up for in pure, unexpected brutality.
To top it off, David grabbed the piece of metal pipe that he had previously dropped by his side when he was spying on the group, grip tightening over as if he could SOMEHOW maintain his sanity by doing so. He hit the man once more over the head, screams of pain escaping the raider. No GUILT was felt by David, not until it was too late. Blood and gore splattered as he continuously took his rage out on this single man, head bashed in and completely DESTROYED.
( apex-reiner. )
After all this time…he finally found one of the large camps the few he traveled with had talked about. But it seemed he had come at a hell of a time. Chaos was heavy in the air, just as the smoke from the burning building. If Reiner listened carefully he could hear screaming, and amongst the shadows he saw the flickers of fast movement.
It didnt take a genius to know it was raiders.
The man was trailing behind some of the masked raiders, a silent predator stalking those who already thought themselves untouchable. Reiner had a hand gun drawn, but was still trying to decide how he should go about picking off the few in front of him when there was a sound to the left of him in an ally. Quick and dangerous, Reiner dipped low to avoid any weapons or attacks to press the barrel of his gun right up under the other’s jaw, his dark dangerous eyes cutting as his finger threatened to pull the trigger.
David was not a predator in the night, stalking his prey. No, he was just a simple man, HIDING in the depths of the shadows, eyes FIXATED on the men who had just recently TRASHED his home. An unfamiliar feeling of vengeance was clear in his mind, but intentions remained unclear, leaving him to remain in his corner, desperately searching for a plan. He was not a killer, so that just didn’t feel RIGHT; at the same time, the home was his true home, the place he lived in as a child and the place he had scrubbed clean of his family’s blood for months before it could be restored to its formal glory.
The young man hadn’t heard or even seen the stranger—truly, his presence almost went completely undetected. It was the overall feeling of not being ALONE that had alerted him to the man’s presence, a few seconds too late ❝ I’M NOT ONE OF THEM, ❞ he whispers with urgency. Luckily for him, the sounds of screams and chaos could mask his words enough, allowing them to go undetected by the raiders. ❝ I swear, ❞ he assured the man with a nod. His gaze slowly moved back to the group, eyes narrowing with distaste and his neck beginning to ache with FRUSTRATION.
happy halloween, @revenios !
And I’m trying to learn brave doesn’t always mean building walls and burning people with fire as protection. I’m trying to learn the kind of brave you taught me - pulling down the gates, letting go of control…
