𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐄𝐑𝐒 squeeze his like she is afraid he might actually let go, and her gaze drops for a second, watching their hands tangled together. There is dirt on her knuckles and the edge of a scratch she doesn't remember getting. She's tired, they both are. Always running. Always looking over their shoulders. But it doesn't matter that they're breathless or that they still got mud on their shoes from the marsh. She would take this a hundred times over if it means she isn't under her grandfather's thumb again. If it means she gets to be with John B. Her friends. She lifts her eyes when he says that one day that'll be a real thing. Her chest tightens, but not in a bad way. More like her ribs can't quite hold how full her heart feels right now. She doesn't care about rings or dresses, never been the type to care about fancy things or saying vows in front of God. Not when she already knows. He is her real thing. She smiles, soft and crooked, the way it gets when she is trying not to cry. Not because she's sad▬▬because she's full. Full of something so good it hurts. Then he says that thing about the French being stubborn and that makes her laugh. Really laugh, even if it's just for a second.

❝ Of course we are. We invented being difficult, ❞ she teases, even as she leans into his kiss. She doesn't pull away right after, though. Just presses her forehead to his, rises up on her toes, and lets herself breathe, even though she knows they are still not out of danger. Those men are still out there▬▬still looking for them. And the rest of the group is probably waiting on them, too.
