"The Vampire Lestat" is a wild read about the penniless youngest son of land-rich bankrupt aristocracy struggling to make his own way under the oppressive thumb of his abusive father and brothers. After being enchanted by the return of a childhood friend with tales of the bright lights big city, he runs away from home to become an actor.

AND THEN the genre changes from a historical fiction to a gothic horror. Rapidly and without warning. Slaps you in the face. Local man having the wildest six months that it is possible to have in France. The revolution happens during the time frame of the plot but so much wild shit is happening that it barely gets a sentence. Highly recommend.
