The Basics to Direct Action

This is an abridged version of the Direct Action Guide from CrimeThinc. Hand-typing the entire thing because the text on the PDF version of the pamphlet is so small like holy crap

1) Security Culture. Be intentional about how you share information.

Security culture is a way to avoid unhealthy paranoia by minimizing risks. If you act wisely, you’ll have little fear about surveillance. All information should be on a need to know basis. In some cases, everyone you know must be informed in order for an action to work, and other times plans must remain a secret between only you and only those you wish to include in this activity: and everyone who is involved must swear to never discuss any activity with anyone on the outside of the action. A silver tongue has its drawbacks but a golden tongue is just fine. Always make your security needs explicit to your group. The more paranoid you are now, the safer you’ll be tomorrow.

2) Legal Support. Prepare an infrastructure to provide support during and after the action. . .

Everyone should be aware of the risks that they are willing to take and what potential criminal charges they will be faced with. If something goes happens and the team wasn’t aware of the potential consequences of an action, the result would be emotionally debilitating. Start slow and steady. Have hundreds of smaller victories, and in due time, they add up into something larger. Legal help could include a legal aid number for arrestees to call, legal observers to monitor and document the actions of police, money for bail, lawyers to provide immediate support to arrestees and to represent them in court, and a circle of people prepared to offer emotional, financial, and logistical support.

3) Media. Establish what coverage you want and get it.

Work out exactly how much media coverage you want, from which sources, and how you are going to obtain or avoid it. This could mean composing it and sending out a press release (The five W’s and one H), or a communique, electing a spokesperson to represent your protect to the press, or making press calls or offering interviews. If you are communicating to the media, compose “talking points,” sound bites that your spokesperson repeats to be sure that they get into the media; to give represnetatives of the press as little material to work with as possible so you can control what they use. You can also provide information or coverage yourselves to the public via podcasting, radio, posters, the power of the internet, etc.

4) Planning. Study the context, chart a strategy, and plan for different scenarios.

Keep record of any and all ideas or strategies. Always have a contingency plan if possible. Weigh out the booms and busts and try to pick the most safest route to your objective while keeping in mind the current skill level of the group. The most effective tactics you can think of, the better. Coordinate the approrpiate timing to pull off an event and keep aware as to what image you wish to dress yourselves as to the public. Think of every obstacle imaginable and how you can counteract them. Underestimate nothing. And for god’s sake, always have a coherent exit strategy.

5) Preparation. Gather equipment and dress accordingly.

Make a timeline until your planned action to have set dates to establish the deadline to which pieces need to be in place. Work out everything you need and how you will obtain them (in a secure way of course).Always dress accordingly. If you all dress the same, make sure no one has anything identifiable on them. If you all dress in civilian clothes, be sure not to wear anything that will drastically make you stand out. Practice runs can be useful of course.

6) Scouting. Study the site of action and keep up with changes.

Recon is a must–I cannot stress that enough. Chart safe routes to go in and out. Look for hiding places, obstacles, potential targets, cameras, ETA on how to get from A to B, what the local authority look like and their shifts, etc. There is literally no such thing as too much information. And of course don’t cause attention to yourself, you silly.

7) Roles. Divide up responsibilities and set up decision-making structures.

Establish all the roles necessary to carry out a plan. It might be a good idea to have understudies for a position just in case someone is absent.

8) Diplomacy. Consider the way the action will affect others.

Whether you’re acting in the midst of thousands of other activists or far away form anyone, take into account what effect your actions will have on other people and how you will be able to bear the responsibilities.

9) Awareness. Stay alert through the action.

Awarenss is the key to success for any action. Keep up with what is going on around you and how you will respond to a situation that relates to current events. When informing others, announce the raw information.

10) Communication. Keep each other informed.

Cell phones, texts, radios, twitter, any type of medium to report real-time activity during an action is useful. The faster information can flow to the group’s operatives, the better.

11) Dispersal. Quitting while you’re ahead.

ALWAYS HAVE A SAFE ESCAPE PLAN MADE IN ADVANCED. Know when to press your advance and know when to quit. When to run fast and when to walk without a care.

12) Debriefing. Regroup to discuss what went well and what lessons can be learned.

This is the part where you destroy any evidence that links you or your group to anything. Follow up on ongoing matters. Celebrate your victories, offer each other constructive criticism, learn from your mistakes, and choose your next target.

it’s disheartening to me that people truly believe that veterans died so that we could live in freedom. no war that the united states has ever engaged in in the past 50 years (if not more) was to protect ourselves from a threat to our safety, but rather to advance our agenda as a global power. it’s really that simple.

Liberalism kinda sucks, though.

A Different Kind of Direct Action

I'm as guilty as anyone. I get that people are angry. We should be angry. The world is fucked up and things are not what they should be. At the same time, it's counter productive to take that anger out on other people. There are so many more deserving targets/outlets for that pent up rage. We know that, we should actively think about that. Instead of preaching unity and then being assholes to other people, we should just do it... unify. Help those that can be helped. For those that can't change or don't want to... that's too bad for them. We're all in this together
