Marian’s character arc in the Double Dragon expanded universe is both awesome and extremely funny.
For the first few games in the series her entire purpose is to repeatedly get kidnapped, possessed, and/or straight up murdered (she gets better) in order to motivate the male leads.

To be 100% clear, Marian is not actually playable in River City Girls – she just cameos as an NPC shopkeeper.
She is, however, playable in the forthcoming River City Girls 2, though all we know about her gameplay at the time of this posting is this one five-second clip:
Wow, I really haven't done too much on this blog in a good long while. But, to be fair to me, you guys don't really give a shit about what I have to say so I guess it all evens out.
Anyway
I love River City Girls and want to support it anyway I can so I bought River City Girls Zero on the Switch. And yes, I already saw the explanation video that WayForward put up. I know it's a port of Shin Nekketsu Kōha: Kunio-tachi no Banka (say that three times fast). It was originally released in 1994 but this version has new cut scenes some added music and
what she said. Well, I played it and...I played it. So here's my review of the game.
The game starts off with a weird intro cutscene a a motorcycle and a little girl or something? It's supposed to be a hit and run and Kunio and Riki (for some reason) get sent to jail. So Kunio and Riki have to break out of jail and clear their names and take down whoever framed them. One their way the reunite with Misako and Kyoko and they join the party (or crew in this game).
The game itself...I thought was kind hard for me. At least playing by myself. I started in normal mode but died at the first boss and then switched it to easy. I still got my butt kicked a lot. There are no pick ups or power ups and the only thing that helps is that you can switch between characters so it's like having two (or four) health bars which you're gonna need.
The enemies can break your combos but it's almost impossible to break theirs. All the characters have a punch, kick, and back attack. I heard that there are also some special moves or something but I haven't been able to do them.
I actually do kinda like the graphics and sound and they're good for the time they came out.
The original game runs on a password system but you can save it properly by using the commands in the ZL menu. You can even reset the game there.
Overall, the game was a little too tough for me by myself, but not bad.
But I was surprised to hear that there was some controversy surrounding the game but it's pretty lame. Apparently some people got really butthurt over the fact that WayForward put two English translations in the game. One "literal" and the other "NEW."
The literal translation supposed to be as close to the original Kunio-kun script as they could get, since the game was never released in the west. Since the Kunio-kun series was based on Japanese delinquent culture expect a lot of swearing and shitty attitudes, which was the style at the time.
The NEW translation still has the same story but the tone is changed to more fit the River City Girls style of humor (as seen above).
Some people have a problem with this for...some reason. I don't know. Like I've said before, I'm a fan of River City Girls, not Kunio-kun so I just went with the NEW translation and didn't give a shit.
Speaking of liking River City Girls over Kunio-kun, I love all the new River City Girls stuff they put in. The cutscenes, intro, art, manga framing device, the amazing music that Megan McDuffee does. Loved all of that.
Final Score: 3/5, but only because I love all the River City Girls stuff in there. And it seems to be setting up River City Girls 2. Plus I only spent $11 on it since I had like 400 Nintendo gold points.

Kyoko: But now it's coming back and it's focused on astronauts!

Kyoko: I know what's happening. The government has implanted a chip in me.
Misako: Nope, the government didn't do that.
Kyoko: And that chip is making me kill astronauts!
Misako: Nope, I guarantee there's no chip in you.
Kyoko: But why? Think rationally, Kyoko!
Misako: Stop saying "rationally", because you don't know what it means.
