I love your writing! (Especially the killing floor chronicles) do you have any good thg fic recommendations?
Thank you so much!!!
I've not been reading as much fanfic as I would like at the moment because life is crazyyy, but here are some fics that have stuck with me (all on ao3):
The Weight Of Guilt by TeaSleuth (Effie/Haymitch)
with my memory restricted to a polaroid in evidence by nonalovesyou (Sejanus/Coriolanus)
a tapestry, unravelling by wildcard (character study of Tigris).
Me crying at the shitty life my character has (i wrote it)
hate when im reading and theres a word i dont know so i search it in the dictionary and its like: beuperer. noun. a person who beupers. i'll fucking kill you
the best thing a man can be is gay and suicidal and miserable and utterly unlikable and unpleasant to be around and prone to addiction and abused and traumatized and not breaking the cycle and
Pre-Arena portraits of Katniss and Peeta for the 74th Hunger games.
how do you reconcile with liking morally imprehensible content and problematic media?
i dont reconcile w anything bc i dont give a shit thanks for sending me this batshit ask tho
"who do you self insert as when you read?"
This is me when I read:
“Imperial core” this isn’t the hunger games, grow up
is this rage bait
hi, i love datm!! you mentioned that it was coming to a close, will any potential upcoming fics be centred around the same world/characters?
Yes ofc!! It's the first instalment in a trilogy (currently going by the working title The Birdsong Trilogy). So while DATM itself only has less than 10 chapters less, it will be followed by a sequel fic (The Burning Bird) which should cover The Hunger Games & Catching Fire from primarily Effie & Haymitch's POVs. Then the final instalment (Day Of Judgment) should cover Mockingjay and its aftermath. The whole series is planned out, but my slow schedule has just been to do with my job & education irl. Not opposed to doing one-shots and stuff after :)
I don't love that every time a famous artist turns out to be a fucking disgusting piece of trash loser evil shitstain that everyone always scrambles to say WELL THEIR ART WAS ALWAYS MID AND BAD ANYWAY. like dude just reckon with the fact you can't judge someone's moral fiber based on the art they make or the clothes they wear or the way they speak or fucking anything anything at all
50th Hunger Games Plutarch arranging a birthday cake for Haymitch on the train ride in to the Capitol for his all but guaranteed brutal demise in the Hunger Games 🤝 Post War Plutarch dropping a severely traumatized PTSD ridden Katniss back in Twelve but only after offering her a spot on his new singing show
I know there's symbolism with Plutarch and simple clothes but after the flannel shirt I'm just going to assume he likes cosplaying as an indie movie director struggling with a tight budget
everything that gets "revised" about the games in sunrise on the reaping is less interesting than what we can infer from the original series. which is a big issue if your book is about propaganda. haymitch's story as we inferred from the trilogy is as follows: a sixteen year old kid randomly gets chosen for a nightmare death match, is lucky enough to find an arena loophole and gets punished ruthlessly for it, and then goes into substance abuse and retreats from society as he has to watch two kids from his home die every year for 23 years.
all of that is so much more interesting than a 16 year old who is chosen to go into the arena after an act of rebellion, who gets chosen to be an agent of the rebellion before entering the arena for no reason, who personally stands up to and defies the fascist leader, who somehow does not die a brutal death in the arena as soon as possible because of said defiance (so that snow can kill his girlfriend in front of him? each collaborator dies brutally but for some reason haymitch lives and it makes no sense). and then descending into madness and alcoholism explicitly and immediately because your puppy love girlfriend dies and you can't handle it.
also collins took one of the most interesting and multifaceted characters of the trilogy and was so afraid of exploring negative qualities. haymitch is known for his mean streak, his intelligence, and his deep-rooted care. none of that is seen here. in fact, he reads (and reads himself) as dumb, his intelligence eclipsed by his rebellious girlfriend, who teaches him big words and that maybe the world could be better. he's never mean - the haymitch of sunrise on the reaping would never tell 17 year-old katniss "you could live a hundred lifetimes and not deserve that boy." in the arena, everything he does is out of kindness for the weakest tributes. every alliance and action pure, when it could have been really interesting to navigate what being placed in a "47 other kids or me" death trap does to your psyche in the moment.
Thoughts on the SOTR trailer? My issues with the film continuity in general aside (which they obviously can't fix), hopefully it has some interesting changes to the book.
I think as far as the films go, I actually quite like it. I have a lot of mixed feelings about the book itself...there were certain aspects I did not like (contradictions to the OG series; Haymitch not immediately getting eaten by mutts despite blowing up a tank (while Maysilee immediately got executed for killing Gamemakers); plot significance of Lenore Dove; Haymitch's ending, etc.). But while I had the reader's equivalent of post-nut clarity about the book, I think that the film is about as good as it gets for an adaptation. Here's some thoughts:
•The arena looks amazing!!! I am so glad they didn't try to make it look dark to make it 'grittier' because the whole point was that it's meant to be gorgeous.
•While I've always stood by the theory that the Seam are indigenous, that ship has long since sailed with the film adaptations, and I have to say that they did a good job of finding an actress for Louella who looks like a child version of Jennifer Lawrence.
•The casting of the victors was brilliant - Maya Hawke, in particular, looks so much like a younger version of Amanda Plummer.
•I'm disappointed that we haven't seen Wellie yet - I personally think that they're going to cut out a lot of her role simply because of time constraints.
•Mckenna Grace perfectly incapsulated Maysilee's attitude and I find it very sweet that she's paying tribute to the fan film with the bangs + hair braid.
•I did heard that they were going to do Appalachian accents for District 12, which I didn't really hear in the trailer?? If anything, Joseph Zada is fighting that Australian accent of his harder than any Career lol. So that was a shame.
•Can't go wrong with Elle Fanning as THEEE Effie Trinket.
•They found the tiniest child to play Ampert and I am worried about seeing That Scene.
•Kieran Culkin looks way too normal for THG (where's the green hair + lipstick gone???) but he did the Stanley Tucci Caesar Flickerman laugh brilliantly. He gives me more Lucky Flickerman vibes
•I suspect that the gore + blood will be toned down significantly, which kind of defeats the horror of the books, but they always seem to aim for a PG-13 rating with the films. I kind of wish they wouldn't...while the books are officially YA, they're not children's literature at all.
•One of the main issues I had with the TBOSAS film is that so much of the TBOSAS book is filled with Snow's batshit sociopathic inner monologue, which obviously Tom Blyth could not convey. So Snow ended up looking like a Nice Young Man who went through (1) breakup and then became a dictator, instead of the racist, misogynistic narcissist he was in the novel. Haymitch is far more consistent in terms of personality & actions in SOTR, so that won't be an issue here.
I might be disappointed with where Collins chose to go with the book, but I'm still going to watch the film. I think it'll be good for adaptation standards.
