Psst. You know Gideon Nav has brown skin, right?
Hi anon, I’m taking this in good faith and as a kind note to me to work on my art and colour tone which is more than fair considering I’m pretty new to digital. I do want to say some things regarding my interpretation of Gideon and her skin tone that I hope you also take as good faith discussion.
I live in NZ, and am exposed to a lot of Maori art, people, and skin tone diversity just through living. Australia and NZ both have a pretty disturbing history regarding skin tone of native people, it’s commonly referred to as the stolen generation. There were a lot of goals and messaging around ‘mixing’ bloodlines and assimilating with the goal of producing people with lighter skin tones. As a result Aboriginal and Maori people tend to have pretty massive skin tone diversity while still fully recognising their cultural history. I’m aware that’s a pretty deep cut for a comment on an art piece of a mixed Maori character written in a time over 10,000 years after these events took place, but it’s worth saying.
In my early reads, guided by the cover art, I noted references to her looking kinda golden more than anything. I haven’t read Nona yet, and I’m sure my perception will shift and grow as I get into that (I think I’ve seen a quote of her having nut brown skin). While I mulled over how to appropriately respond to this ask, I did see Tamsyn’s post from 2019 where she explicitly stated that she pictures Gideon as darker than Harrow, I wasn’t aware before, I appreciate you asking and leading me to ask better questions and learning, and I’ll likely adjust from here on out.
In my brain, I was drawing her and Harrow very early on (see the line reference in the piece from the early chapters of book one) where to my knowledge, they’re living on a planet that is almost consistently sunless. My knowledge at this point was that Gideon is also mixed and her mother is ginger.
tldr: didn’t do my research, went off the book cover am thankful for the correction, and will probably draw something new with more accurate skin tones.
Thank you!
tf when the tomb is locked
doctor will fix me they'll do a scan and find a terrible darkness seated in my stomach and be like "oh my god we're so sorry we were supposed to remove this at birth like everyone else, i don't know how this was missed, we're so sorry you've been living like this your whole life" and it'll fix my brain too and all clouds will part
i think people should be required to read up on fandom history of censorship and why ao3 was founded in order to use ao3. too many people going "ao3 shouldn't allow certain things!" nowadays.

there’s a rumour going around that you really shouldn’t mess with those Wayne boys…
Bruce picking up a gun and shooting at Jason in Batman #158 is actually him being a good father and engaging in Jason's interests with him (shooting people). smh fandom asks for good dad bruce but then can't stand how it manifests in comics....
do you know what your hands have done?
did you even bond with your estranged brothers if no one ended up injured?
tfw none of your idiot family wears helmets so you have to go rescue them whenever someone aims for their heads, AND Batman ends up panicking at you through the comms over it.
