dear fiction writers: 

as far as I know, there is no large carnivore who would abandon actively eating a killed meal to chase live prey. chasing and hunting live prey is a risk, as a healthy live creature has the capability to injure a carnivore, or tire it out through the chase. If there is, say, a giant pile of dead bodies to eat, which abandoning would allow other carnivores or scavengers to steal and eat instead, it makes no sense at all.

The sole exception I can think of is if the large carnivore thought the live prey was another carnivore or scavenger, and was chasing them as a threat display to ensure they didn’t steal the dead bodies. Even in that case, though, it would only be a short, mock charge followed by returning to the pile if the opponent fled. With possibly whatever the animal’s equivalent of “and stay out” would be.

Another thing: most carnivores don’t like to fight. They have to mug something to death for every single meal, they have to stay in top shape while conserving their energy. Meanwhile, herbivores have plenty of extra energy because they eat stuff that comes out of the ground and doesn’t fight back, and they often live in big social groups, so they’re better at handling stress and more used to having to actually come to blows with other animals to get their way. 

So like, a zebra will try kick your ass just to see what’s up. A tiger won’t do shit unless it’s damn sure it can take you. I’d rather come face to face with a cougar than a stag— have you seen videos of what happens to hunters when a stag catches a dude on the ground? the stag tears the dude apart. Not even to eat him. Just because the stag didn’t like what was going on and decided it was time to curb stomp a motherfucker. 

So if you’re deciding what kind of Big Scary Animals to have be a threat, like, forget wolves and lions and eagles and velociraptors. Go drop in a moose.

How come Ryan Reynolds can go around pretty much pretending he’s Deadpool all the time and Marvel come out with the movie and no one makes fun of it, and thinks it’s great but Jared Leto does some crazy stuff to try and get in character for a role he’s super excited about and having fun and it becomes a meme and he’s trying to be “edgy”?

And where Reynolds is playing it for comedy, Leto (or at least the marketing around Suicide Squad) very much is trying to be ‘edgy’.

I do feel like it should be said that Ledger wasn’t even working on Batman when he died. It was a different project entirely, and his overdose was likely accidental carelessness owing to multiple doctors in different cities or areas prescribing him different medications that shouldn’t have been taken together, because if you’re rich enough you can wander into a doctor’s office and go “I have X issue, nothing I’m doing is managing it properly, give me something for it”, and they’ll just take your word for it. So Health Ledger’s death probably has only a little bit to do with Dark Knight (or not at all) and a LOT more to do with his well-known issues with anxiety and depression, which he’d admittedly struggled with long before Batman. The people who worked with him on Batman have never said much about him seeming “disturbed” or otherwise bothered by the role out of character, and was even one of the nicer and more upbeat people on set. The only people who have implied that the Joker pushed him toward a mental breakdown were people writing speculative articles, fans who wanted a satisfying reason for his death, and… Jack Nicholson, who was already bitter before Ledger died that he didn’t call Nicholson for advice on how to play the character, because Nicholson owns the Joker, apparently.

So Leto is capitalizing on this “it’ll make you KUH-RAZY” thing that isn’t actually a thing (because, like storywonker said, Hamill’s been doing it forever and a day with a much more manic persona for the character and is fine) and is passively perpetuating a lie about a man who, in life, was an intensely private person. Leto is trying to out-Joker Ledger by being an unprofessional dipshit who harasses his coworkers when his competition isn’t even alive. Assnugget.

Also, Ryan Reynolds understands how humor works. How he plays up Deadpool is entirely comedic. It’s good-natured and laugh-with-me (and laugh-AT-me) rather than inviting an audience to laugh at other people once he’s purposely made them uncomfortable. Leto sent someone a dead rat; Reynolds told some jokes with a few kids dressed as X-Men who were in on it. Leto is trying to ~comment on society~ with his ~edginess~ in one of those “isn’t it hilarious that people have POSITIVE FEELINGS ABOUT ANYTHING ahahaha”; Reynolds shitposts on Twitter. 

People DO make fun of Ryan Reynolds. The difference is that Reynolds is in on YOUR JOKE because he started it, so it’s in good fun even if you genuinely dislike him. Leto is mistaking unfunny miscondect for quirk and edge. People are making fun of Leto because Leto isn’t in on the joke that is his behavior, so he won’t – and can’t – roll with it and make it genuinely entertaining like Reynolds does.

Hello Again

When I left the band 3 years ago, I was very open about the state of my mental health. I really wasn’t in a good place. Leaving was absolutely what was necessary for me at the time and I 100% stand by my decision. I am very happy to report the last 3 years have done me well. I am in a much better place these days. Therapy and medication can go a long ways. So, now that MCS is calling it a day, I couldn’t imagine not being a part of the final tour. 

Like I said, some of you kept up with me. But for those of you that haven’t, let me catch you up. I’ve been trying to keep busy with all kinds of projects. I started a year-round Christmas themed podcast with my dog called Feliz Navipod. It’s full of silly songs I write, bad jokes, and wonderful special guests who drop by for a chat. I’ve been on a bit of a break with the show for a while, but new episodes will be starting back up again soon!

I even recorded an EP full of Christmas songs. I wrote the songs(minus two covers) and played all of the instruments. It even includes special guests Allison Weiss, Mike Phirman, Sara Watkins, Matt Taylor, Todd Cooper, and Chris Farren. Sure, it’s not anywhere near Christmas time, but you can still check out or download the EP on Bandcamp. 

I’ve been writing more music than I ever have in my life. I enjoy it quite a bit. You can even buy custom written songs from me. It’s true. I am always delighted to get requests. Go ahead and make a song request, I dare you. CLICK HERE.

All of the songwriting even got me a dream job. I did some music for a Henson tv show!!! I got to do the music for a bit on No You Shut Up with Paul F. Tompkins. It combined possibly my three favorite things: puppets, comedy, and music. 

Speaking of puppets, I also made a music video with my friend Kate Micucci and a bunch of puppets for nerdist.com!

That’s just a few of the things. I’ve also been dipping my toes into writing. I’ve done some writing for sites such as The Yearbook Office, The Runout, Property of Zack, and Eat/Geek/Play.  I also teach drum lessons.  I also do a SECOND podcast. It’s about another podcast. It’s called U Two Talkin’ U2 2 Me Too? Yes. I co-host it with my friend Todd Cooper and it is VERY stupid. 

I also play in another band just for fun around Los Angeles. It’s called The Pride of Erie PA.  We have some music available and even a few music videos. 

After not doing a ton of it for a bit, I am really starting to play drums quite a bit more again these days. I’ve been doing some sessions and am actively looking to play more and more. I had the realization, now that I am happy, of how much I actually do like playing drums. It’s weird how I almost forgot. So, this final MCS tour came along at just the right time. Now I’m back in Motion City Soundtrack for the final go ‘round. It’s weird and totally not weird at all. I am really looking forward to doing this one more time. I’m ready to have an amazing time and cry like a baby.
