He hates where he is, and why heās hereāin a hospital room with Shane in the bed.Ā He stands up, stretching his back, and stands at the window.Ā He needs to look at anything besides his best friend in the same precarious state he found him in hours ago: delirious with fever, barely conscious, rapid, ineffectual breaths announced with wheezing and crackling deep in his chest.
Shane had been sick for weeks and struggling mentally for even longer.Ā And Hayden hadnāt clocked how serious it had become.Ā Itās an easy urge to rationalize it: he has four kids; Shane hadnāt fucking said anything; his play had never suffered.Ā But the excuses resonate like the shifting of blame, selfishly escaping guilt.Ā
