(CW: Mentions of (fictional) Rape, Incest, Pedophilia, Grooming in yaoi comics.)
----
I'm aware that this is a very unusual post for me to make, but I needed to rant about it because it's been bugging me for years.
I dislike the reoccurring pattern of old protagonists in yaoi either having "getting raped" as their plot, or having a young man/teenager as their love interest instead of someone that's their age or close to it. Sometimes both of these tropes pop up in one comic and it's really aggravating. Obviously not all comics do this, but a lot of them are guilty of it.
Note that I am specifically talking about original (non-bara) yaoi comics, not the fandom ones or other gay media.
I know the phrase "don't like, don't read" exists-- but when the only options you're given is rape for dinner and incest for dessert, can you really blame the readers for getting mad about it?
Do you know how small the number of comics are with old yaoi protagonists who actually look and act their age?
Very few.
Can you imagine how irritating it is to search for comic recommendations about old yaoi protagonists only to be met with a character who doesn't even look like he's above the age of 25? Or when they act so childish and immature, it takes you out of the story? How about times when you see a really handsome looking older man in a comic cover, only to witness him getting assaulted not even a few panels in to the 1st chapter with zero content warnings? How about times when you've anxiously wondered if the young man the old protagonist raised and treated like a son would turn out to be his love interest?
As someone who has experience digging through dirt and mud just to find older men in yaoi, it's already hard enough trying to find ones with my type of old men in it, but it's borderline impossible to find comics that don't feature these cursed tropes one way or another.
You might be asking, "Kat, why not just draw it?" Well here's the thing. I have been doing that for years already. And also, wanting to be an artist and wanting to be a consumer are two separate things.
Do you have any idea how exhausting it is to constantly have to draw for yourself just because you can't find a specific niche that you like? For years?
I'm not even asking for much. All I want is a middle-aged gay love story with no rape & both partners being age appropriate for each other & consenting without being forced to.
That's it.
And it's outrageous that most of these comics can't even do that!
Please note that I know there's this whole other conversation in the community regarding dark-shipping and all that, but that's not my topic for today. I'm here to talk about how there's genuinely almost no comics about gay older men that's not about them getting assaulted or being (forced) into non-con/pedophilia/grooming/incest. THAT'S what I'm really upset about.
The number one big reason why I like being in fandoms so much is because these are the only spaces that exist who don't treat their gay older men like trash. And the canon media doesn't even have any confirmed gay characters most of the time! The fans just headcanon them as gay and ship them, and it works!
... Maybe I'm just looking for what I want in the wrong places⦠Maybe I'm the silly one for trying to look for something normal in the yaoi market considering (not all but) a lot of them are really into dark-shipping...
(Remember, these are my personal thoughts regarding this topic, and they should not be treated as objective fact.)
Idk if someone asked this before so my bad if they have, but what are the creeps personalityās and way of speaking, like do they stutter or anythingā¦also, I love your auš£ļø
I LOVE THIS ASK! I've been planning to do voice claims but idk I gave myself the ick so instead I shall be describing them with words šāāļøšāāļø (also, thank you very much x)
Kate: Kate has a pretty rough voice due to lack of use (and a lot of screaming) but before she entered the forest she had a naturally deep voice, it was very soothing, her father used to tell her she should go into doing voiceovers for advertisements.
Hoody: He sounds like he'd got a perpetually sore throat, this has only gotten worse over the years, which is weird given that he actually doesn't talk as much as he used to. Yeehaw, give him a Werther's original.
Masky: When talking, Tim sounds perfectly normal, a perfectly average dude. However, when shouting he sounds like he's gargled gravel and washed it down with eight packs of fags a day... And that's honestly not that far from the truth.
Toby: Ever heard a southern guy with a stammer? Yeah. He used to get stuck on the start of words when he was younger (w-w-w-what), but as he's gotten older he finds himself repeating entire words/ phrases multiple times in a row instead (What's- what's- what's up).
Liu: Liu often rethinks his sentences as he says them. He's also got a slight slur due to the scarring to the left side of his mouth, it makes speaking quickly pretty difficult.
Clockwork: She has a very casual way of speaking, likes to throw in the occasional nickname towards people she's talking to, and sometimes slips more into the Boston accent she developed when she was little.
Jane: Jane speaks quite formally, she blames it on the amount of speech therapy she was put through as a child. She had a lisp when she was small but her parents sought out specialists and caught it fairly early. It's now barely noticeable, but Jane thinks that when it flares it makes her sound unintelligent, so clear enunciation is always her go to.
Jeff: He's been squeaky since he was 12. Voice cracks haunt this man so severely that he'll frequently make his voice deeper on purpose just to avoid them.
EJ: Doesn't talk. But his clicks are lovely, very rhythmic.
Candy Pop: Giggly bugger, he rhymes sometimes when he's bored. There's not really any reason for it, and it's actually kind of terrifying given that his voice is very spikey (Idk how to explain it other than that. Spikey voices make sense to me and that's what matters).
LJ: He speaks almost exclusively in Cockney rhyming slang. (If you don't know what that sounds like, I suggest you google it, it's great.) His actual voice is decently high pitched, but it has a bite to it that isn't entirely natural. He's always laughing and has a habit of squeaking like a spray bottle when he gets excited, but it never sounds genuine, more so like it's being forced out of his throat.
Jason: Posho. This guy uses perfect grammar and occasionally drops in some French and Italian for the simple reason that he thinks it makes him sound more intelligent. He has a very smarmy quality to his voice which really doesn't help with his myriad of other issues.
Ann: She has a transatlantic accent. Sometimes it goes a little slurred when her jaw dislocates in her feral state, then she's stuck doing the traditional groaning and snarling that every zombie does, but most of the time she sounds like an old fashioned actress.
Dina: Dina has a habit of mumbling and cutting herself off mid thought, she also uses words that aren't the most common in the modern day. This is due to her main source of socialisation growing up being old books (and the bible, mostly the bible). She'll be talking and randomly bust out with a 'thou hast been forsaken'. Everyone just nods and pretends there's nothing odd about it.
Helen: Naturally their voice is very flat and surprisingly soft, and it can easily be mistaken for sarcasm. They use formal language to hide their insecurity surrounding their weakness in reading, and they excel at switching between accents, tones, and personalities to get what they want.
Puppeteer: Jonathan's voice is layered, like two audios being played at the same time. One of them is a raw, croaky whisper that occasionally moves into a death rattle, and the other is his usual voice, which is fairly deep and has an audible vibration to it.
Kagekao: The only way I can describe it is scratchy, like the end of an animal's yowl drawn out and mixed with a vaguely human voice. He laughs like a hyena.
Slenderman: Communicates via frequencies most humans cannot hear. His 'whispering' is literally a psychic frequency that he pushes into his Proxies brains.
Zalgo: Yet again, frequencies. But Zalgo also roars on occasion, like a lion and a dragon has a very warbly baby.
BEN: He sounds like a twelve year old who has way too much access to voice filters, or like he's in a COD lobby and is talking down a very, very bad quality mic. He's been known to be less decipherable when upset, his voice taking on a waterlogged quality.
Nina: Valley girl. And that's really all I have to say. (If you have a valley girl accent, I love you. It's such a fun one.)
Vine: A little Russian, a little flat, and a little stilted. He didn't talk for a good few years, so as an adult Vine struggles to keep his sentences cohesive. He had a period of very bad voice cracks as a young man, but he grew out of them. His voice is quite velvety, and deceptively confident in tone.
Sally: Sally's voice is echoey, like she's stood down a hallway. She sounds like a normal little girl, one who often squeaks in excitement and giggles in the middle of her sentences, but there's a second layer that sounds more slurred. It's like someone talking with a mouth full of saliva, like someone choking on their own breath. It gets worse when she's upset.
When i have hear me outs, nobody wants to hear me out (or thinks im crazy), so i have to say the most vanilla hear me out in the entire world. They still find that insane.
Like the reason it's a hear me out is because... get this.... it's not a conventionally attractive character!
For example:
Ryan Gosling is not a hear me out. He's a handsome guy
Shego (correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is her name) from Kim possible isn't a hear me out, she's genuinely pretty
Bro my most vanilla hear me out is Gyokko from demon slayer, and people still think I'm like the scum of the earth and a degenerate for thinking that....
like if you didn't want weird, you shouldnt ask for weird
Idk guys what do you think
Edit: when I ask for someone's hear me outs, I don't wanna see an anthro animal or like... a normal guy.
