Linda K. Johnson & Linda M. Wysong:  Double Difference

For our August 2016 exhibit, Indivisible warmly welcomes Linda K. Johnson and Linda M. Wysong. With Double Difference, Johnson and Wysong continue their 25-year collaborative dialogue centered around Portland’s layered and ever changing landscape.

May Exhibit: Dowsing

For its May exhibition, Indivisible presents Dowsing, featuring work by Martha Schlitt, Mark Takiguchi and Lou Watson, whose investigations of “home” range from domestic setting observations and shared space interactions, to the role of home in a social and historical context. With an emphasis on localization, the artists work in conjunction with Christine Toth to discuss the work of “place” in place, and around the kitchen table. The May 7th opening reception features dowsing lessons by Lou Watson.

Indivisible

An interdisciplinary artist and activist, Christine Toth is a long-time resident of the Division Street neighborhood and has documented its ongoing transformation. In 2015, she received a Neighborhood Gallery Grant from Surplus Space to convert 500 square feet of her home into a gallery/viewing area. 

About Indivisible:

The home was built in 1884, a year after Portland connected to the national railroad network, and three years before the first bridge (the Morrison) was built across the Willamette River. Located on SE 26th Avenue between Clinton and Division Streets, the structure was among the first developments in the city, and is witness to the most recent wave of building and construction in the neighborhood. As such, it is uniquely situated in both location and time to connect the art community and the neighborhood community, as an intervention on a neighborhood that is becoming unrecognizable.

Indivisible's first year of programming: 

Using a home as a cultural palette, the “Hidden Histories” project offers a space that prompts different considerations than that of a traditional gallery. It is a process, we hope, in which artists will consider how to talk about their work with neighbors as well as with other artists, where the risk of widening our community inspires work that is transformative, and where the experience builds common ground.
